How we review

The short version

We live in Budapest, we pay our own entry fees, and we tell you which famous places to skip. No venue has ever paid to be recommended here, and none ever will.

What a review is based on

• First-hand visits. We write about places we've actually been, usually more than once and at different times of day.
• Real prices, dated. Forint figures carry the date we checked them. Perishable details (hours, menus) are verified against a source no older than six months, or written without the specific.
• The local test. We weigh who is actually in the room: a place full of residents earns different words than a place surviving on one-time tourists.
• Both sides of the till. Tourist price vs local price gets named when there's a gap. That gap is half the reason this site exists.

What we never do

• No pay-for-coverage, no free-entry-for-praise deals, no sponsored reviews dressed up as editorial.
• No fabricated facts: if we haven't verified a price or an opening time recently, we say so or leave the number out.
• No using other people's photos. Images are our own, licensed, or Creative Commons with attribution.
• No trashing competitors or venues for sport. If a place isn't worth your time, we say it plainly and move on.

Affiliate links and independence

Some booking links earn us a commission at no extra cost to you (details in theaffiliate disclosure). The wall between that and our opinions is simple: we recommend the same places with or without a link, and we link skip-warnings just as readily as favourites.

Spot something wrong or outdated? Every guide has a correction link, or write tohello@hungaryunlocked.com. Legitimate corrections ship in days, not months, and material fixes get noted on the page.
