Tipping Guide for Hungary

Navigate Hungarian tipping customs with confidence!

General Tipping Info

  • Customary, but not always obligatory: Tipping in Hungary is customary and appreciated, but generally not obligatory, especially if service was subpar.
  • 10-15% guideline: If you were satisfied with the service AND the bill does NOT include a service charge, a 10-15% tip is generally accepted and appreciated.
  • Always in Forints (HUF): This is key! Always tip in the local currency, Hungarian Forints. While some touristy places might accept Euros, it can be inconvenient for staff.
  • Cash is often preferred: While you can add tips to card payments in many places, cash tips are often preferred by locals and staff. This way, it's more certain the tip goes directly to whom you intend.
  • Check Your Bill!: Before tipping, always check your bill thoroughly for a "Szervizdíj" (Service Charge). If it's included, additional tipping is usually not necessary.

Tipping in Different Scenarios

Service Charge (Szervizdíj) vs. Tip (Borravaló)

This is one of the most common points of confusion. It's important to understand the difference!

What is a Service Charge? The service charge is a fee (usually 10-15%, sometimes exactly 12.5%) that many restaurants and some other service providers automatically add to your bill. It must be listed as a separate item on the bill and is usually indicated on the menu.

Does it replace a tip? YES, in most cases. If your bill includes a service charge, you are generally NOT expected to leave an additional tip. This helps avoid "double tipping."

Many Hungarians feel that if a service charge has been paid, no further gratuity is needed. Revenue from the service charge is legally required to be used for employee wages.

Tipping Etiquette: Dos and Don'ts

✓ Do:

  • Always check your bill for a "Szervizdíj" (Service Charge) first!
  • If paying with cash, hand the tip directly to your server.
  • If paying by card and you want to tip (and no service charge is included), tell them the total amount you want to pay (e.g., "Bill is 8800 Ft, make it 9500 Ft.").
  • Always tip in Hungarian Forints (HUF).
  • Be polite; a smile goes a long way!

✗ Don't:

  • Feel pressured by payment terminals with pre-set tip options. It's okay to choose 0%, especially if a service charge is included or you weren't satisfied.
  • Generally, don't leave tips on the table (less secure/customary than direct hand-off).
  • Don't tip if the service was genuinely poor.
  • Don't assume everyone everywhere expects a tip (e.g., retail clerks, public transport inspectors).
