Who we are
Hungary Unlocked (hungaryunlocked.com) is an independent Budapest travel guide. For anything privacy-related, write tohello@hungaryunlocked.com.
What we collect
- Newsletter: your email address, the language and page you signed up from, the time, and a one-way cryptographic fingerprint (a salted hash of your IP and browser) kept only as proof of consent. We never store your raw IP address. Legal basis: your consent (GDPR art. 6(1)(a)), which you can withdraw any time with the unsubscribe link in every email or by writing to us.
- Analytics: Google Analytics 4 helps us understand visits and use of our guides. Where European privacy rules such as the GDPR apply, it loads only after you allow analytics; elsewhere it loads by default. You can switch it off at any time under Cookie settings in the footer. Analytics may process page views, interactions, device information and cookie identifiers; reports do not make the underlying data anonymous.
- Affiliate links: some links (for example to Booking.com, Viator, or GetYourGuide) earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Those sites have their own privacy policies once you land on them. Details onhow our affiliate links work.
Microsoft Clarity
We use Microsoft Clarity to understand how readers use our pages. It records clicks, scrolling, mouse movement and session recordings, together with device and browser data and an approximate location derived from your IP address. It also records the addresses of the pages you view, including search terms typed into our site search. Clarity masks all text on our pages, so what you type, including your email address, is not recorded. We do not use Clarity for visitors in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland: there it is never loaded. Elsewhere it runs by default and sets two cookies on our domain: _clck, which keeps a pseudonymous user ID for one year, and _clsk, which links the pages of one visit into a single recording. Microsoft may also set its own cookies on Microsoft domains, such as CLID and MUID, which we cannot delete. If you refuse analytics under Cookie settings in the footer, Clarity switches to its cookieless mode, with a separate ID for each page view, and its cookies are removed from our domain. To switch Clarity off, turn off Microsoft Clarity under Cookie settings: we stop Clarity, remove its cookies from our domain and no longer load it in this browser. You can switch it back on there at any time. According to Microsoft, recordings are kept for 30 days, recordings marked as favourites and a random sample for up to 9 months, and heatmaps are available for up to 9 months.
Microsoft is an independent controller of the data Clarity collects. Microsoft collects or receives this data through Clarity, also in order to provide Microsoft Advertising, and may use it in line with the Microsoft privacy statement, including to create user profiles, also for advertising. Microsoft is a US company, so the data may be transferred to and processed in the United States.
Advertising, analytics and your choices
We use Google AdSense to fund the site. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies, identifiers and device information to deliver and measure ads, and to personalize them when permitted. The consent message lists the partners and purposes. Advertising availability depends on Google approval and your privacy choices.
Use Cookie settings in the footer to manage or withdraw your choices. Where available, this opens Google’s consent controls; otherwise it opens our analytics settings. Closing our fallback panel does not grant consent. Earlier analytics refusals remain effective until you make a new choice. What we do not do
- No selling or renting your data. Ever.
- No spam. The newsletter is occasional and every email has an unsubscribe link.
- No storing raw IP addresses with your email.
Where your data lives
Newsletter data is stored in our own database on Cloudflare's infrastructure (EU-capable processing under their data processing addendum). Google Analytics data is processed by Google.
Your rights (GDPR)
You can ask for a copy of your data, correct it, or have it deleted entirely. Emailhello@hungaryunlocked.com and we handle it within 30 days. Unsubscribing from the newsletter is instant via the link in any email. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.
Retention
Newsletter data is kept while you are subscribed. Unsubscribed addresses are kept on a suppression list (so we never email you again by accident) unless you ask for full deletion.
