The best matcha in Budapest right now is whisked at Miyu Matcha on Veres Pálné utca, where the powder comes from a hand-harvested farm near Kagoshima and the blend is built by an actual Japanese tea master. If you just want the quick answer: Miyu for ceremonial-grade, CAPHE by Hai Nam for the cheapest properly made iced latte (1,810 HUF, about $5, checked July 2026), Cécha when you want the pretty drink to also taste of something.

Budapest went from “matcha is that green Instagram thing” to a full-blown matcha city somewhere between 2025 and now, and the SERP for it is still mostly Instagram posts and five-item listicles. So here is the longer version: nine spots, every address and price verified this month, sorted by the only question that matters. Do they take the tea seriously, or do they take the photo seriously?

📋 At a Glance

Best ForCeremonial matcha, fruit matcha lattes, matcha desserts, plant-milk drinks
Cost1,710 HUF (matcha tonic at CAPHE) to 3,690 HUF (ube matcha at Tokyo Matcha), prices from the venues' current menus, checked July 2026
Time Needed15 minutes for a takeaway latte, an hour if you sit down for the whisking ritual
Getting ThereEverything below is inner-city except CAPHE (tram 19/41 or 47/49 to Gárdonyi tér) and Matchy35° (M3 to Corvin-negyed)
Skip IfYou think 3,000 forints for whipped tea powder is absurd. Not an unreasonable position, and Budapest's coffee is cheaper and world-class anyway

The Serious Ones: Where the Grade Actually Matters

Miyu Matcha

📍 Map and directions

Location: Veres Pálné utca 8, District V · Style: ceremonial matcha bar

The founder sold her car to open this place, spent a year finding a farm near Kagoshima that still harvests by hand, then partnered with a Japanese tea master who blends the powder to her spec. That is a level of obsession you can taste: the plain matcha here is grassy, sweet-edged, and completely free of the bitterness that makes people think they hate matcha. It gets whisked with a bamboo chasen in front of you, no machine shortcut, and the house syrups (cherry-cinnamon, strawberry-elderberry, maple-sea salt) are made in-house.

Order: the plain matcha latte first. Judge every other cup in this guide against it. If you fall in love, the shop sells their ceremonial powder at 15,000 HUF for a tin (site price, July 2026), which is not cheap, and is also exactly what this grade costs.

Tokyo Matcha

📍 Map and directions

Location: Westend, Váci út 1-3, ground floor next to the waterfall, District VI · Style: Japanese tea bar in a shopping mall

Yes, a mall. Get over it, because this is one of the few places in the city whisking ceremonial-grade, 100% Japanese-origin matcha to order, and they sell two grades of powder (ceremonial at 10,900 HUF, an everyday grade at 8,900 HUF) with zero pretense about which is which. That transparency alone puts them above half the scene. A pure iced matcha tea is 1,990 HUF, the fruit lattes run 3,290 HUF, and the ube and nitro honey specials top out at 3,690 HUF (menu checked July 2026).

Order: the pure iced matcha tea if you want to taste the powder, the pistachio or ube if you have already accepted that you are in a mall and joy is allowed.

Léon Café × Jade Matcha

📍 Map and directions

Location: Lánchíd utca 19, District I · Style: design-forward hotel café with a dedicated matcha program

The ground floor of the Leon Hotel, a few steps from the Chain Bridge on the Buda side, runs its matcha in collaboration with Jade Matcha, and it is the only place in Budapest pouring that particular Madrid-born label. Matcha Spritz, a raspberry iced version, and matcha soft serve in summer. It is the most “elevated” room on this list, which cuts both ways: beautiful space, hotel-lobby energy, and prices they do not print online, so budget accordingly.

Order: the Matcha Spritz on the terrace. This is also the correct matcha stop if you are already doing the Chain Bridge and Castle side and refuse to cross back to Pest undercaffeinated.

The Pretty Ones That Still Deliver

Cécha

📍 Map and directions

Location: Paulay Ede utca 37, District VI · Style: minimalist Vietnamese-run matcha café

Cécha’s drinks look engineered for a phone camera, pastel layers, cloud foams, the lot, and then they go and taste balanced too, which is the whole trick. Founded by Vietnamese tea people, mostly plant-milk based, open every day (10:00-19:00, Sundays to 18:00, site hours July 2026). A plain matcha latte is 2,790 HUF, fruit versions 3,190 HUF, the taro cloud 3,390 HUF, and the honey-yuzu matcha soda 3,090 HUF (menu checked July 2026). They also sell their own ceremonial powder at 12,500 HUF per 30 g.

Order: the lavender matcha latte, their quiet signature, or the matcha tiramisu if you got a seat.

Nolita Matcha & Coffee

📍 Map and directions

Location: Irányi utca 18, District V · Style: New York-styled matcha and toastie bar

The newest opening on this list (July 2026) and already the one locals argue about most. The pitch: premium Uji matcha, 100% fruit purées, no added sugar anywhere, so the Whipped Strawberry Matcha and the Pineapple-Yuzu-Cardamom actually taste of fruit rather than syrup. Warm tramezzini toasties, a kimchi version included, make it a legitimate light lunch. Dog-friendly, tiny, expect a line at peak hours.

Order: the Pineapple-Yuzu-Cardamom Matcha, the most interesting glass of the city’s whole fruit-matcha wave.

Matchy35°

📍 Map and directions

Location: Nagy Templom utca 17, District VIII · Style: matcha dessert bar inside a sushi spot

Tucked inside Little Geisha Can Cook II near Corvin-negyed since March 2026, and worth leaving the tourist grid for. Everything sweet is made on-site: matcha cheesecake, matcha roll cake, fresh mochi. Drinks run from proper classics to butterfly-pea rainbows, yuzu matcha soda, and a Biscoff cookie matcha, and the neighborhood means you are drinking it next to university students, not tour groups. If you are building a whole dessert afternoon, our Budapest dessert guide pairs well with this stop.

Order: anything plus a mochi. The mochi is the point.

Matcha Island

📍 Map and directions

Location: Dohány utca 37, District VII · Style: organic matcha café in the party district

A green refuge in the middle of ruin-bar land, pouring 100% organic Japanese matcha. The menu is huge for a place this size: matcha tea at 2,299 HUF hot or iced, lattes from 2,299 HUF, jasmine and coconut-water versions, cloud drinks at 2,899 HUF, a matcha spritz, plus matcha cheesecake and crepe cake at 3,299 HUF and mochi at 1,399 HUF (menu checked July 2026). Mid-range prices, wide range, solid execution: the utility player of the list.

Order: the jasmine matcha latte, an actually clever combination, and the crepe cake if you skipped lunch.

The Coffee Shops That Do Matcha Right

CAPHE by Hai Nam

📍 Map and directions

Location: Bartók Béla út 35, District XI · Style: Vietnamese specialty café, Buda side

The value pick of the entire list and the one where you will hear the most Hungarian spoken. The iced matcha latte is 1,810 HUF and the matcha tonic 1,710 HUF (menu checked July 2026), which undercuts the downtown matcha bars by a solid thousand forints, and it comes from the same crew behind some of the city’s best Vietnamese food. Get the matcha cookie (840 HUF) and thank us later. Bartók Béla út is what Váci utca thinks it is: galleries, cafés, locals.

Order: iced matcha latte plus a bánh mì. Lunch, caffeine, and a better neighborhood, all under 4,500 HUF.

Madal Cafe

📍 Map and directions

Location: four spots, most central at Ferenciek tere 3, District V · Style: specialty coffee chain that respects the green stuff

Madal is Budapest specialty-coffee royalty, and their matcha lattes are what you order when half your group wants world-class espresso and the other half wants matcha without anyone settling. Seasonal specials rotate; this summer’s Matchango Cloud (mango plus matcha foam) is the current one. Four locations mean you are rarely more than a ten-minute walk from one in central Pest.

Order: the iced matcha latte, or the seasonal special if the board mentions mango.

What to Skip, Lightly

The matcha corners inside Váci utca boutiques, NINI Matcha Club being the best-known, are pleasant places to hold a pastel cup in front of a bag display. Nothing wrong with that; it is simply a different sport from what Miyu is doing, and at Váci utca rents you are paying for the postcode. Same rule as everywhere in this city: if a menu will not tell you the grade or the origin of the powder, the powder is not the point of the business.

One useful word before you go: elvitelre (pronounced roughly “EL-vee-tel-reh”) means takeaway. Say it at the counter and you have just outed yourself as someone who did their reading. For everything else the city pours, steams, and whisks, our food and restaurant guides go deeper.

Good to know

Is matcha popular in Budapest?

Very, and recently. Since 2025 the city has opened dedicated matcha bars at a rate of roughly one every few weeks, from ceremonial tea counters to fashion boutiques serving strawberry clouds. The scene now splits cleanly into serious-grade spots (Miyu, Tokyo Matcha, Léon's Jade Matcha bar) and aesthetic-first cafés, and this guide tells you which is which.

Where can I get ceremonial-grade matcha in Budapest?

Miyu Matcha (Veres Pálné utca 8) sources ceremonial-grade powder from a hand-harvesting farm near Kagoshima and works with its own Japanese tea master. Tokyo Matcha in Westend whisks ceremonial-grade to order, and Léon Café at Lánchíd utca 19 runs its matcha program with Jade Matcha. Cécha and Nolita also use high-grade Japanese powder (Nolita is Uji-sourced) in their signature drinks.

Do Budapest matcha cafés have vegan and plant-milk options?

Yes, almost universally. Oat is the default alternative nearly everywhere; Cécha builds most of its menu on plant milks, Matcha Island runs coconut-milk and coconut-water versions, and CAPHE by Hai Nam swaps milks on request. Asking for oat milk in a Budapest specialty café is about as exotic as asking for a napkin.

How much does matcha cost in Budapest?

As of July 2026: a plain matcha latte runs 1,800-2,800 HUF ($5-7.50) depending on the venue, signature fruit or cloud drinks 2,900-3,700 HUF ($8-10), and a pure whisked matcha tea 2,000-2,300 HUF. Cheapest solid option: CAPHE by Hai Nam at 1,810 HUF. Most expensive regulars: the ube and nitro drinks at Tokyo Matcha at 3,690 HUF.
