Public Toilets in Budapest: Where They Are, What They Cost, Which Are Free
On this page
Budapest’s public toilets are mostly run by FCSM, the city’s sewage company, and in the city’s list (May 2024) nearly all of them charge 250 HUF (about $0.77) a visit. You find them in metro underpasses, on the big squares, in parks and on Margaret Island, with hours that range from round the clock to 7:00 to 19:00 in winter, and the handful of free ones are in parks and in District VIII.
The short version for a sightseeing day: keep a 200 and a 50 HUF coin in your pocket, use the toilet at every museum, bath and café you are already paying for, and know the street toilets below that sit right on the tourist trail.

Deák tér closes at 19:00 and has no step-free access. After dark, or with a wheelchair or pushchair, walk over to St Stephen’s Basilica: the automatic toilet on Szent István tér is listed as open around the clock and accessible. Our Basilica guide covers the rest of the square.
Up on Castle Hill, the toilet on Tárnok utca, a short walk from Fisherman’s Bastion, is open until 22:00 and has an accessible cubicle, which makes it the one to remember up there.
Heroes’ Square has nothing on the square itself. The nearest city toilet is behind the Műcsarnok on Olof Palme sétány, open 6:00 to 18:00, and the City Park toilets are a few minutes further in.
Central Market Hall keeps toilets on several levels, and they follow the market’s hours: Monday 6:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Friday 6:00 to 18:00, Saturday 6:00 to 15:00, closed on Sunday. More on the hall in our Great Market Hall guide.

Metro stops: the toilets are in the underpasses
On the Budapest metro, do not look for a toilet on the platforms: the city-run ones near metro stops sit in the underpasses and on the squares above them. From the city’s list (May 2024):
| Metro stop | Toilet | Hours | Accessible |
|---|---|---|---|
| Batthyány tér (M2) | In the underpass | 6:00 to 22:00 | No |
| Széll Kálmán tér (M2) | On the square | 6:00 to 18:00 | Yes |
| Lehel tér (M3) | In the underpass, Váci út | 6:00 to 18:00, then an automatic unit 18:00 to 6:00 | Yes |
| Nagyvárad tér (M3) | In the underpass | 7:00 to 19:00 | No |
| Corvin-negyed (M3) | József körút underpass | 6:00 to 18:00 | No |
| Göncz Árpád városközpont (M3) | Róbert Károly körút underpass | 6:00 to 18:00 | No |
| Újpest-városkapu (M3) | Above the station, Breda József utca | 6:00 to 22:00, then an automatic unit 18:00 to 6:00 | Yes |
| Örs vezér tere (M2) | By the Sugár shopping center | 6:00 to 18:00 | No |
| Déli pályaudvar (M2) | Krisztina körút underpass | 6:00 to 18:00, then an automatic unit 18:00 to 6:00 | Yes |
| Móricz Zsigmond körtér (M4) | In the underpass | 7:00 to 19:00 | No |
| Boráros tér (HÉV, trams) | In the underpass | 6:00 to 18:00 | No |
The fee at all of these is 250 HUF in the city’s list, and the staffed ones also take a 1 euro coin or 1.25 dollars, except Széll Kálmán tér, forint only. Arriving by train? Our Budapest railway stations guide covers the toilets at Keleti, Nyugati and Déli.
The free ones
Free public toilets are rare in Budapest, so these are worth knowing by name:
- Vérmező park, District I, at Attila út 91 near Déli station: free, accessible, open 8:00 to 20:00 from 15 March to 15 November and 10:00 to 16:00 in winter.
- Szent István park, District XIII, on the Pest riverside opposite Margaret Island: free, same hours as Vérmező, not accessible.
- II. János Pál pápa tér, District VIII: the toilet in the park guardhouse is free every day from 7:00 to 21:00 (district page, June 2023) and accessible; the automatic unit beside it charges 10 HUF in the city’s list.
- Kálvária tér and the Déri Miksa utca playground, District VIII: free, every day from 7:00 to 21:00 (district page, June 2023).
- Orczy Park, District VIII: free, every day from 6:00 to 20:00 (district page, June 2023).
- District VIII mobile toilets: free and open 24 hours at Koltói Anna tér (corner of Magdolna utca and Fiumei út), Teleki tér, Muzsikus Cigányok Parkja, the corner of Kálvária tér and Dankó utca, and the corner of Népszínház utca and Bacsó Béla utca (district page, June 2023).
- City Park: the park’s own toilets are free for members of Liget+, the park’s membership scheme; everyone else pays.
District VIII also runs automatic toilets on Horváth Mihály tér, Losonci tér, Mátyás tér and Déri Miksa utca that charge 10 HUF, open every day from 7:00 to 21:00 or 23:00 depending on the square (district page, June 2023).

Beyond that, the free toilet is the one you have already paid for. Museum and bath tickets include the toilets, so go before you leave; the free things to do in Budapest list is a good reminder of where you will not have that luxury. Cafés and restaurants generally let you use theirs if you buy something.
Margaret Island
Margaret Island is well served, which is welcome on a long walk or a run. According to the city’s list (May 2024), the toilets by the fountain, by the Casino and at the north car park are open 24 hours, cost 250 HUF and are accessible. The ones on the main promenade and by the water tower keep seasonal hours (7:00 to 19:00 in winter, 8:00 to 20:00 in summer), and two more open only from April to October. Our Margaret Island guide has the rest of the island.
Card or coins
Bring coins. A 250 HUF visit is one 200 coin and one 50, and that is the payment method that works everywhere. FCSM put out a tender in April 2026 to fit contactless bank card terminals to 21 of its automatic toilets, among them Astoria, Szent István tér, Lehel tér, Rákóczi út 29, Dob utca and the Margaret Island units, and the tender itself describes the existing paid toilets as mostly cash-based. FCSM’s privacy notice for card payments has applied since 24 June 2026, so you may meet a reader on the door; count it as a bonus.
Paying in euros works at many toilets, but it is the expensive way: the 1 euro coin they accept is worth about 365 HUF at the ECB rate of 2 November 2026, against a 250 HUF fee.

Hours, winter and night
Three patterns cover almost every city toilet:
- Around the clock: many automatic units, including Astoria, Szent István tér, Blaha Lujza tér, Rákóczi út 29, Dob utca 37 and Bethlen Gábor tér. Useful after a night in the ruin bar district, since Dob utca 37 is right in it.
- Daytime shifts: the underpass toilets mostly run 6:00 to 18:00 or 7:00 to 19:00, with automatic night units taking over at Déli, Lehel tér and Városkapu.
- Seasonal: the park and riverside toilets at Palota út, Clark Ádám tér, Petőfi tér, Széchenyi Bath and on Margaret Island switch to 7:00 to 19:00 from 1 November to 31 March and 8:00 to 20:00 from 1 April to 31 October.
Accessibility and families
FCSM has fully renovated a dozen of its toilets and fitted them with accessible cubicles and baby-changing tables, and most of its toilets have an attendant on duty. For wheelchair users, the city’s list is the document to trust: it marks every toilet as accessible or not, and some central ones, Deák tér among them, are not. FCSM also lists Astoria, Petőfi tér and Széchenyi Bath among its renovated step-free toilets. Our accessible thermal baths guide covers step-free bathing if that is part of your plan.
The art toilet on Dorottya utca
One toilet in Budapest is a sight in its own right: POP&ROLL at Dorottya utca 6, a few steps from Vörösmarty tér. The artist kissmiklos designed it as a public art project, with 20 individually designed toilets and nearly 100 artworks in a neo-pop interior, plus a shop and a small gallery. Go for the design rather than in an emergency, and check the entry terms at the door.

Finding the nearest one
The city publishes an interactive map of the toilets run by itself and its partners on its public toilets page, with hours, fees and the operator of each, marked in different colors. Screenshot the area you will spend the day in before you set off, so you are not hunting for signal in an underpass. Signs in Budapest say WC, mosdó or illemhely; férfi is men, női is women.
Good to know
How much does a public toilet cost in Budapest?
The standard fee at the toilets run by FCSM, the city's sewage company, is 250 HUF per visit in the city's list (May 2024), about $0.77. The staffed ones also accept a 1 euro coin or 1.25 US dollars, and the automatic cubicles 1 euro, but at today's rate a euro is worth roughly 365 HUF, so paying in forint is the better deal. Market hall toilets run by Budapest Vásárcsarnokai charge between 200 and 300 HUF, depending on the hall.
Are there free public toilets in Budapest?
A few. The city's list (May 2024) marks the toilets in Vérmező park in District I and Szent István park in District XIII as free, open 8:00 to 20:00 from 15 March to 15 November and 10:00 to 16:00 in winter. District VIII lists free toilets in the guardhouse on II. János Pál pápa tér, on Kálvária tér and at the Déri Miksa utca playground, every day from 7:00 to 21:00, and in Orczy Park from 6:00 to 20:00 (district page, June 2023). In City Park the public toilets are free for Liget+ members. Otherwise the realistic free option is the toilet of a museum, bath or café you are already paying to use.
Where is the public toilet at Deák Ferenc tér?
On the corner of Károly körút and Bárczy István utca, on the edge of Deák Ferenc tér. The city's list (May 2024) gives it as open 7:00 to 19:00, at 250 HUF, and not wheelchair accessible. Outside those hours, walk over to St Stephen's Basilica, where the automatic toilet on Szent István tér is listed as open around the clock and accessible.
Can I pay for public toilets in Budapest by card?
Sometimes. FCSM, which runs most of the city's public toilets, put out a tender in April 2026 to fit contactless bank card terminals to 21 of its automatic toilets, and its privacy notice for card payments has applied since 24 June 2026. The tender itself describes the paid toilets as mostly cash-based, so keep a 200 and a 50 HUF coin in your pocket and treat a card reader as a bonus.
Are Budapest's public toilets wheelchair accessible?
Many are, and the city's list (May 2024) marks each one. Accessible toilets close to the sights include St Stephen's Basilica, Astoria, Fisherman's Bastion on Tárnok utca, Blaha Lujza tér, Rákóczi út 29, Dob utca 37 and the one behind the Műcsarnok at Heroes' Square, plus the fountain, Casino and north car park toilets on Margaret Island. FCSM, the operator, also lists Petőfi tér and Széchenyi Bath among its renovated step-free toilets. The Deák tér toilet is listed as not accessible.
