EventsAutumn MondoCon brings anime, cosplay and a Who-ya concert to Hungexpo, October 17-18
Autumn MondoCon, the anime, manga, gaming and cosplay convention, takes over Hungexpo on Saturday and Sunday, October 17-18, and the program starts at 09:30 on both days. On Saturday at 19:00 Who-ya Extended, the band behind the second Jujutsu Kaisen opening, plays a full concert on the main stage, included in the regular ticket. On Sunday the main stage screens the anime feature To You in the Beyond from 11:30 to 13:30, nine days after its Japanese cinema release. Two of its makers are at the convention: character designer Hechima and chief producer Motoki Mukaichi talk about the film on the main stage on Saturday from 15:30 to 16:30, and on Sunday from 13:30 to 15:00 Hechima draws live, with a short Q&A, on the Nissin stage. Tickets cost 11,000 Ft online and at the door, and the door price drops to 9,000 Ft on Sunday. Children aged 6 to 14 with an adult pay 5,500 Ft (bring ID), and under-6s go free. Door tickets are limited, and the box offices close at 18:00 on Saturday and 17:00 on Sunday. A free convention shuttle runs between Örs vezér tere and the Expo all weekend, and from the Stadionok stop on the M2 metro it is about a 13-minute walk to the entrance. Most talks and panels are in Hungarian, while the concert, cosplay shows and workshops need no language at all.

Track work cuts the H8-H9 suburban line to Gödöllő, October 17 to November 6
MÁV says the H8 and H9 suburban railways run only between Cinkota and Gödöllő, and between Cinkota and Csömör, from October 17 through November 6, while around 750 meters of track near Mátyásföld gets rebuilt. Replacement buses cover the Örs vezér tere to Cinkota stretch instead. If you're visiting Gödöllő's Royal Palace by train from Budapest, plan for the bus connection at Örs vezér tere and allow extra time.
Getting aroundends tomorrow
The H6 line to Ráckeve runs a shortened weekend service, October 17-18
BKK and MÁV say the H6 suburban railway between Budapest and Ráckeve runs only between Közvágóhíd and Szigetszentmiklós on October 17 and 18. Two replacement bus lines cover the rest: the H6 bus between Szigetszentmiklós and Ráckeve via Szigetszentmiklós-Gyártelep, and the H6A bus between Szigetszentmiklós and Tököl. If you're heading to Ráckeve's Savoyai Castle or the Aqualand thermal bath this weekend, build in extra time for the bus leg and check BKK's site for the exact stops.

Rail works disrupt Budapest trains to Lake Balaton's north shore, October 17 to 22
From Saturday October 17 to Thursday October 22, MÁV track maintenance disrupts trains between Budapest and Lake Balaton's north shore, in two stages. On October 17 and 18, weekend works near Martonvásár mean the Tapolca fast trains run only between Székesfehérvár and Tapolca; MÁV recommends taking a Bakony or Göcsej InterCity on the Veszprém line from Budapest to Székesfehérvár and changing there to the Tapolca fast train. The last fast trains of the day keep their full route (Budapest-Déli 19:05 to Tapolca, Tapolca 17:34 to Budapest-Déli), and between 8:00 and 19:00 the Bakony and Göcsej InterCitys reach Budapest 20 minutes later than usual. From October 19 to 22, the works move to the north-shore line itself and fast trains run only between Balatonfüred and Tapolca: travelers from Budapest take a Balaton or Tópart InterCity on the south-shore line to Lepsény, leaving Budapest-Déli 30 minutes earlier than the usual fast train, at 35 minutes past the hour, then a MÁVBUSZ replacement bus to Balatonfüred that stops only at Balatonakarattya, Balatonkenese, Balatonfűzfő, Balatonalmádi, Alsóörs and Csopak. Local trains between Székesfehérvár and Balatonfüred are replaced by buses stopping at every station. Check exact departures in the MÁVPlusz app before traveling.

Fő a kávé, Budapest's coffee history exhibition, is open until October 31
Fő a kávé, the temporary exhibition on coffee culture at the Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport's Electrotechnical Collection, is open until October 31. It follows coffee from the 1683 siege of Vienna through the great Pest coffee houses such as the New York, the Centrál and the Hadik to today's specialty scene, with coffee makers and espresso machines from every era and a café inside the show. You'll find it at Kazinczy utca 21 in the 7th district, open Wednesday to Friday and Sunday 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 19:00, closed Monday and Tuesday. An adult ticket is 4,200 HUF, a family ticket for two adults and two children 7,200 HUF, and guided tours start every Saturday at 10:30 and 11:45, at 1,300 HUF per person on top of the ticket.

Bereg Embassy Bar closes for good after its last evening on October 22
Bereg Embassy Bar, the garden bar tucked into the Hattyú Ház building on the Buda side, is closing for good. The owners say on their own Facebook page that the bar's 11-year story ends on the evening of October 22, when they close the garden gate for the last time. If you've been meaning to see this one, you have until that last evening.

Gyermekvasút's family day returns October 17, with extra trains and a model railway show
On Saturday, October 17, the Gyermekvasút (Children's Railway) turns its Hűvösvölgy terminus into a family day, 10:00 to 16:00, with a fair-games street, craft stalls (felting, basket weaving, pottery, bead stringing, henna), folk costumes visitors can dress up in, and a stage program of folk dance and a puppet show. Regular trains keep running every 40 to 50 minutes between Hűvösvölgy and Széchenyihegy, with extra trains on the lower Hűvösvölgy-Szépjuhászné section every 20 to 30 minutes, where a vintage steam locomotive, historic railcar and diesel locomotive also run that day (the steam train covers the full line on Sunday instead). Alongside it, the Hűvösvölgy gym hosts a model railway exhibition that weekend. Parking near the line is very limited, so the railway recommends arriving by train or BKK bus, with a P+R lot at Hűvösvölgy for anyone who has to drive.

Chimney cake weekend at the Citadella on Gellért Hill, October 23 to 25, free entry
The Citadella on Gellért Hill hands its café terrace over to kürtőskalács (chimney cake) for the October 23 national holiday weekend, Friday to Sunday. Next to the classic cinnamon, walnut, cocoa and vanilla versions there are pistachio, hazelnut, raspberry and orange ones, plus a chimney cake fondue with a chocolate, vanilla or white chocolate dip, and mulled wine or hot chocolate to go with it. A kids' craft corner runs 11:00 to 13:00 every day, acoustic acts play in the afternoon, and on Friday and Saturday a DJ set covers sunset from 16:30 to 18:30. On Saturday at 13:00 ten people race to finish a chimney cake first: entry is free but places are limited, so sign up on the venue's page beforehand. The whole event is free on all three days, at Citadella sétány 1.

Budapest's two main Christmas markets confirm November 13 opening
The Advent Bazilika market at St. Stephen's Basilica and the Vörösmarty tér Christmas market both confirm on their own pages that the 2026 season opens November 13. The Basilica market runs until January 1, 2027. Vörösmarty tér stays open until the early hours of January 1, from 11:00 to 3:00 on New Year's Eve and with shorter hours on December 24-26, but its craft stalls and little railway are there for the last time on December 28, when the square switches to New Year's Eve party preparations. If you're planning a Budapest trip around the markets, November 13 is the confirmed start for both of the city's two main squares.
Getting aroundends tomorrow
The Danube Bend boats stay off until at least October 18
MAHART's extraordinary information page now dates its low water schedule change from July 13 to October 18, so the Danube Bend boats stay off until at least then. Nothing on the Bend moves inside that window: Budapest to Szentendre, Budapest to Visegrád, the Visegrád hop on, Visegrád to Esztergom, the Esztergom cruise and the hydrofoil, while the daytime Budapest hop on does not call at Margaret Island. The end date has moved several times this summer and the notice names no restart date, so check MAHART's page before you build a Danube Bend day around a boat, and count on the train in the meantime. The H5 HÉV from Batthyány tér is the land route to Szentendre, the Vác pier is still under repair so nothing calls there either, and the Budapest sightseeing sailings run throughout.

Ryanair moves its airport check-in and bag drop cut-off to 60 minutes before departure from 10 November
From Tuesday 10 November, Ryanair closes airport check-in and bag drop 60 minutes before scheduled departure at all its airports, Budapest included, instead of the current 40 minutes. Passengers who check in online and fly with cabin bags only are not affected. If you are checking a bag on a Ryanair flight out of Budapest, get to the bag drop well before it closes, 60 minutes before departure.
