Budapest Beer Festival 2026: Four Events Share That Name, and Only One Is at Szabadság tér

First, work out which festival you actually found

Four events answer to “Budapest beer festival,” they happen in three different months, and the search results do a spectacularly bad job of telling them apart. Before anything else, find your row:

The fourth row is the interesting one, and it is why the search results are such a mess. The Budavári Sörfesztivál started up in the Castle in 2011 and ran there every year through 2016. Then the Castle’s renovation program took the space, the organisers went looking for somewhere “more central, larger and greener,” and in 2017 the festival reopened down on Szabadság tér with a new name and no entry fee. So the Buda Castle beer festival and the Belvárosi Sörfesztivál are not rivals. They are the same festival, ten years apart, and half the pages still ranking for the Castle version are advertising an event that moved out before the current Hungarian craft scene really existed.

One more, for completeness, because it will also turn up: the first Budai-Hídfő Sörfesztivál launched this year at the Buda end of Petőfi Bridge, 10-14 June 2026. That one has already been and gone.

The Belvárosi Sörfesztivál, in plain numbers

The tenth edition takes over Szabadság tér from Tuesday 1 September to Sunday 6 September 2026. The organiser’s line is that they are filling the square with beer for the tenth time, which puts the first Szabadság tér edition in 2017 and confirms an unbroken run since.

What is confirmed on sorfesztival.hu as of 2 August 2026:

• Entry: free. No ticket, no wristband, no queue at a box office.
• More than 250 kinds of beer, from Hungarian craft breweries, importers bringing in international lines, and the food truck operators who follow this circuit around the country.
• Around 60 exhibitors across breweries, bars and food.
• Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday 12:00 to 00:00, Thursday through Saturday 12:00 to 02:00, Sunday 12:00 to 00:00.

What the organiser has not published yet: the exhibitor list, the concert program, and per-beer prices. There is a downloadable program booklet and site map on their site that fills in closer to the date. If a guide is quoting you a 2026 lineup right now, ask where it came from.

The glass is the ticket

This is the part that trips up visitors who read “free entry” and assumed free meant free. You cannot be served beer at Szabadság tér without buying a festival glass first, and the glass is the single largest fixed cost of the day.

Both prices are from the organiser’s own site, checked 2 August 2026. If you find 4,250 Ft quoted somewhere, that figure is from an older edition and has been sitting on that page for a while.

Prices are in HUF, which is what you pay at the counter. Converted at 1 USD = 317 HUF, the ECB rate on 31 July 2026. Rates move, so treat the converted figures as indicative.

The organiser does not say the glass is refundable, and past editions sold it as an object you take home rather than as a deposit. Budget accordingly. Two practical consequences:

1. Share a glass if you are a pair drinking at a similar pace. Nothing about the setup requires one glass per person, and it takes the fixed cost from roughly $32 to $16.
2. The cheaper glass is not the worse glass. The 1,000 Ft gap buys a different shape, not more beer. Buy the premium unless you specifically want the limited one on your shelf afterward.

Per-beer prices are not published ahead of time. Festival pours have historically sat inside that band rather than above it, which is genuinely unusual for a festival in a capital city.

Which day to go

The hours tell you more than any program will.

• Tuesday and Wednesday close at midnight and are the calm days. Come now if you want to actually talk to the brewers, which is the whole reason to go to a beer festival rather than a beer bar. Exhibitors have time on a Tuesday afternoon. They have none on Saturday.
• Thursday and Friday run to 02:00 and are the sweet spot: full lineup, full atmosphere, still possible to reach a tap.
• Saturday also runs to 02:00 and is the busiest day of the six by a distance. Szabadság tér is large, but 60 exhibitors and a Saturday night in early September will fill it.
• Sunday closes at midnight and empties early. Good if you want a lazy afternoon of it, less good if you want the last-day-of-the-festival energy, because there is not much.

Early September in Budapest is usually still warm enough to drink outdoors comfortably into the evening, though the nights have started to turn by then. Bring a layer for the 02:00 walk home.

Getting there, and where to go after

Szabadság tér sits in Lipótváros, the government quarter of District V, ringed by ministries, the American embassy, the old Hungarian Television building and a fair amount of very serious architecture. It is a strange and excellent place to put a beer festival.

• M3 metro, Arany János utca: about five minutes on foot to the southeast corner.
• M2 metro, Kossuth Lajos tér: about five minutes from the north, past the Parliament.
• Tram 2: get off at Széchenyi István tér and walk two blocks inland.

Because you are in District V, you are also surrounded by the most tourist-priced square kilometer in Hungary. Two things worth knowing:

• The Kolodkó mini statues cluster around Szabadság tér itself, which makes for a decent thirty minutes before the festival opens at noon.

Is it any good, or is it a tourist trap?

It is genuinely good, with one caveat.

The argument for it: free entry is rare for an event this size, 250 beers is not a marketing number, and the mix of established Hungarian brands with small breweries and importers means you can drink your way across the country’s beer scene in an afternoon without leaving one square. The setting is better than a fairground. Free entry is the part that changes the maths: at a gated beer festival the ticket is spent before you taste anything, and here your whole budget goes into the glass.

The caveat: this is a big public festival in the middle of a capital city, and by Friday night it is a crowd, not a tasting. If your idea of a beer festival involves a conversation with someone who brewed the thing in your hand, go on Tuesday or Wednesday, or go to KRAFT at Dürer Kert the following weekend instead, where the whole format is built around that. Skip it entirely if: you are only in Budapest for two days, you do not drink beer, or you were hoping for the Buda Castle version with the view. That last one is not coming back.
