Budapest Beer Festival 2026: Four Events Share That Name, and Only One Is at Szabadság tér

Four events answer to “Budapest beer festival,” spread over three months of the year. Find your row first:

The fourth row explains why the name is so confusing. The Budavári Sörfesztivál started in the Castle District in 2011 and ran there every year through 2016. In 2017 the festival moved down to Szabadság tér under a new name and with free entry. So the Buda Castle beer festival and the Belvárosi Sörfesztivál are not rivals: they are the same festival in two locations.

The Belvárosi Sörfesztivál in numbers

The tenth edition on the square ran from Tuesday 1 September to Sunday 6 September 2026. The organizer marks it as the tenth time it has filled Szabadság tér with beer.

What the 2026 edition offered:

• Entry: free. No ticket, no wristband, no box office.
• More than 250 kinds of beer, from Hungarian craft breweries and importers of international beers.
• Sixty exhibitors on the organizer’s list, breweries, bars and food stalls together.
• Hours: Tuesday and Wednesday 12:00 to 00:00, Thursday through Saturday 12:00 to 02:00, Sunday 12:00 to 00:00.

The 2027 edition: dates not yet announced.

What you drink, eat and see

The 2026 exhibitor list gives a good picture of what a visit is like. On the beer side, Hungarian craft breweries such as Szent András, Rizmajer, Horizont, Mad Scientist, Monyo, Fóti and Kapucinus stood next to big names like Pilsner Urquell, Pécsi Sör and Csíki Sör, plus stands pouring Czech, Bavarian and Belgian beers. If someone in your group does not drink beer, there was cider (Somersby, Bright Cider) and NVMEN pálinka.

For food, the list had burgers, BBQ, fish and chips, Mexican and pizza trucks, churros and Hungarian cheeses and sausages. Exhibitors change each year, so treat these as examples of the mix, not a promise for 2027.

The setting is the other draw. The stalls line Szabadság tér, a large square in the middle of District V with a park of lawns and trees at its center, so the festival spreads around a green space rather than across bare paving.

The glass is the ticket

Entry costs nothing, but you cannot be served beer without buying a festival glass first, and the glass is the biggest fixed cost of the day.

The organizer does not say the glass is refundable. Two practical tips:

1. Share a glass if you are a pair drinking at a similar pace. Nothing requires one glass per person, and it takes the fixed cost from roughly $31 to $15.

Getting there, and where to go after

Szabadság tér sits in Lipótváros, the government quarter of District V, ringed by ministries, the American embassy and the old Hungarian Television building.

• M3 metro, Arany János utca: about five minutes on foot to the southeast corner.
• M2 metro, Kossuth Lajos tér: about five minutes from the north, past the Parliament.
• Tram 2: get off at Széchenyi István tér and walk two blocks inland.

Full route logic is in the Budapest metro guide. The organizer mentions street parking and a paid underground garage, but public transport is simpler, especially if you stay until 02:00.

Around the square:

• Several of the Kolodkó mini statues are on and around Szabadság tér, a nice thirty minutes before the festival opens at noon.

Who will enjoy it

It suits most visitors who like beer, with one caveat.

What makes it worth a visit: entry is free, the 250-plus beers mix established Hungarian brands with small breweries and importers, so you can taste your way across the country’s beer scene in one afternoon, and the setting is a leafy downtown square rather than a fairground. Your money goes on the glass and the beer, not on a ticket.

The caveat: this is a big public festival in the middle of the city, open to anyone walking past. If you would rather have a smaller event built around craft breweries and live music, KRAFT at Dürer Kert is the better fit. Skip it if: you are only in Budapest for two days, or you were hoping for the old castle setting with the view. In September the castle hosts the Budapest Wine Festival, the one with the panorama.
