Budapest celebrates Christmas on the evening of the 24th, and that one fact shapes the whole season. The markets and the lights run for weeks before it, the city goes home on Christmas Eve afternoon, and on the 25th and 26th, both public holidays, the shops stay shut while the baths and the two big markets carry on.
The 2026 calendar is kind to a visitor. Christmas Eve is a Thursday and the two holidays fall on Friday and Saturday, so the shutdown runs straight into the weekend and the city restarts on Monday 28 December. This page gives you the dates with their sources, the three holiday days, the lights, concerts, food and the trips out of town, with a link to the detailed guide for each.

Budavári Advent, Városháza Park, Ferenc tér and the light tram had not published their 2026 dates on 25 October 2026. Opening hours on ordinary days: Advent Bazilika 11:00 to 22:00, and to 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays; Vörösmarty 11:00 to 21:00, and to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Our Christmas markets guide covers each market in detail, with the smaller ones, the stalls and the 2025 food prices.
The Markets: What to See, Eat and When to Go
Advent Bazilika is the market to see after dark. A giant tree stands under a canopy of lights on Szent István tér, with a nativity scene and an Advent wreath in front of the church, and from 17:30 the facade becomes the screen for the light show. Nearly a hundred Hungarian craft exhibitors sell beside the food stalls. For more room to browse, come on a weekday morning soon after the 11:00 opening, then come back before 17:30 for the show.
Vörösmarty Classic Xmas is the market for gifts and small children: Hungarian crafts fill the stalls (our Christmas markets guide introduces the exhibitors), and the children’s train is free, weekdays 14:00 to 20:00, weekends from 11:00. Café Gerbeaud is on the same square when you need to warm up. The craft stalls and the train stay until 28 December, so come before then.
Advent Óbudán is the neighborhood option: a smaller square outside the center, with an ice rink, an easy pick with small children. Go for the rink and the atmosphere. It runs daily from 27 November; take the M2 metro to Batthyány tér, then the H5 HÉV suburban train to Árpád híd.
Gozsdu Christmas Market is the one to fold into a night out. It fills the chain of courtyards between Király utca and Dob utca in the Jewish Quarter, with the district’s restaurants and bars all around, from 4 to 23 December, daily until 19:00.
What it costs. The markets price in forints: in November 2025 a mug of mulled wine (forralt bor) was around 1,500 HUF and a plain kürtőskalács, the chimney cake, around 2,800 HUF. Our Christmas markets guide has the full 2025 price list, from lángos to kolbász.
For bejgli, the walnut or poppy-seed roll, go to a bakery or supermarket in the weeks before Christmas; it travels well as a gift.
When to go. For more room, go on a weekday morning soon after the 11:00 opening. It gets dark around 16:00, and Vörösmarty tér is about a nine-minute walk from the Basilica, so one evening covers both: Vörösmarty first while there is light, then the Basilica for the 17:30 show. To sleep within that walk, see our guide to where to stay for the Christmas markets.

| BKK, 2025 pattern | Saturday timetable by day, last daytime buses and trams 15:00 to 16:00 | Public holiday timetable | Public holiday timetable |
The 24th. Treat the morning as your window. In 2025 Aldi, Auchan, Penny, Spar and Tesco closed at noon on Christmas Eve, Lidl stayed shut, and each CBA shop set its own hours; the chains publish their 2026 times in December. Christmas Eve is the main family evening in Hungary, so book a table for the evening well ahead.
The legal status of the 24th. In 2026 Christmas Eve is a rest day, also called a bridge day, and it is worked off on Saturday 12 December. A bill to make it a permanent public holiday, starting this year, was tabled on 23 September 2026 and debated in Parliament on 13 October, and the final vote had not taken place on 25 October. Under the bill most shops would close for the whole day, except restaurants, hotels, florists, confectioners, petrol stations and shops at stations and the airport. So treat the 24th’s shop hours as open to change, and do the grocery run on the 23rd.
Transport. BKK publishes its Christmas timetable in mid-December; the 2025 notice came out on 17 December. In 2025 the metro ran until about 18:00 on the 24th, the night buses took over after that, and the 100E and 200E airport buses and tram 6 ran day and night. See the Budapest metro guide for lines and tickets.
The baths. Széchenyi opens at 08:00 every day from 18 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 and closes at 20:00 on the 25th. Its closing times for the 24th and 26th were not yet published on 25 October, so check the bath’s opening hours before you go. Rudas runs its weekend hours on every holiday, rest day and public holiday, the 24th included; our guide to what is open on 24, 25 and 26 December covers the other baths. Gellért has been closed since 1 October 2025, and the operator expects to reopen in 2028. Our winter thermal baths guide covers bathing in the cold.
The Lights: Free Streets, Paid Light Parks
Free. The free lights are the reason to be out at dusk: no ticket, no queue, and the walk between the markets becomes the evening itself. The Christmas street lighting is a city program, separate from the markets, and the city’s lighting rules keep it up from Advent to Epiphany on 6 January (see our Christmas lights guide). Andrássy út, Fashion Street, Deák tér and Vörösmarty tér carry the main displays, and the Basilica facade projection starts at 17:30 every afternoon during the market. The fényvillamos, the light tram, has run every season since 2009 on regular lines for the price of a normal ticket; its 2026 dates are not yet published. It gets dark around four in December, so you have time to walk from Vörösmarty tér to the Basilica, about nine minutes, before the projection starts.
Paid. The light parks are walk-through installations with a ticket, worth it if you want a set route of light art rather than a city stroll. Story of Lights is the one to pair with a day in Gödöllő: it fills the park of the royal palace, a HÉV ride from the city, so a day trip can run on into the evening. It runs from 24 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, daily from 17:00 to 21:00 in winter, last entry 20:30, and closes on 24 and 25 December; an online standard ticket is 4,300 HUF Monday to Thursday and 4,800 HUF Friday to Sunday, so a weekday visit costs less. Lumina Park is the one for a light walk without leaving town: it is on Margaret Island, reached by bus 26, and it is one of the ticketed light parks in the city itself.
Our Christmas lights guide has the walking route and the light parks in detail.
Concerts and the Nutcracker
A concert is the warm, seated alternative to an evening on the squares, with music the markets do not have. The Opera’s Nutcracker is the classic family pick and keeps playing through the holidays: it runs from 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, with 11:00 performances from 24 to 27 December; check the Opera’s calendar for seats. For Bach at Christmas, Müpa plays the first two cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio on 17 December, and Matthias Church hosts Bach and Charpentier’s Midnight Mass on 19 December; with children aged 4 and up, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble’s folk Nativity plays at Müpa from 19 to 23 December. Our Christmas concerts guide lists the 2026 program in date order, with prices. Book as soon as your dates are fixed: Müpa and Concerto Budapest price dynamically, so early tickets cost less.
Food and Family Traditions
The Christmas Eve table centers on halászlé, paprika-red fish soup, and töltött káposzta, stuffed cabbage, followed by bejgli, the rolled walnut or poppy-seed pastry. Szaloncukor, fondant sweets in shiny foil, hang on the tree and get eaten off it through the holidays. By tradition the tree is decorated on the 24th, and small children are told that Jézuska, the infant Jesus, brought it and the presents. Catholic families traditionally fasted on the 24th until the evening meal.
At the markets the winter classics are kürtőskalács (chimney cake), lángos, rétes (strudel) and forralt bor, mulled wine. Bejgli and szaloncukor are sold in bakeries and supermarkets in the weeks before Christmas, which makes them an easy gift to take home. Our Hungarian Christmas food guide has what each dish costs in Budapest and where to eat halászlé if no one is cooking for you.
Christmas Day Trips from Budapest
Gödöllő. The palace where Empress Elisabeth spent her Hungarian summers is about 42 minutes away on the H8 HÉV from Örs vezér tere, and in winter its park hosts Story of Lights, which opens at 17:00. Pair a palace visit in the afternoon with the light park after dark. Our Gödöllő palace guide has the train and the tickets.
Szentendre. The baroque town on the Danube is a short HÉV ride north, and its lanes suit a winter afternoon. Its 2026 advent program is not yet published. Our Szentendre guide covers the trip.
Further afield. Customs and Christmas markets vary from region to region across Hungary, from the fish soups of the Danube and Tisza towns to village nativity plays. Our Christmas in Hungary guide covers how the country celebrates and the town markets worth a train ride, from Debrecen and Szeged to Eger, Győr and Sopron. If you are weighing Budapest against a neighboring capital, we have compared its markets with Prague’s and Vienna’s.
Christmas with Kids
- The free children’s train at Vörösmarty runs weekdays 14:00 to 20:00 and weekends 11:00 to 20:00, 10:00 to 14:00 on the 24th and from 14:00 on the 26th, until 28 December.
- Ice skating. The City Park rink opens on 20 November 2026. Advent Óbudán has an ice rink every day from 27 November, and the Csepel ice park is another option. Our City Park ice rink guide covers skates, lockers and getting there.
- The Basilica light show starts at 17:30 and is free.
- Story of Lights gives a reduced ticket to children aged 2 to 14, and under-2s go free.
- The baths, with a catch. Under the operator’s bathing rules, nobody under 14 can use Széchenyi, Rudas, Lukács or Dandár. Our thermal baths with kids guide lists the pools and water parks that take younger children.
From Christmas into New Year
From Monday 28 December the city runs normally again. That is also the last day for Vörösmarty’s craft stalls and children’s train, while the Basilica market keeps its ordinary hours. On New Year’s Eve both big markets open 11:00 to 3:00. Our New Year’s Eve guide has the program, the rules and the transport.
The Trade-offs
In favor. Seven weeks of markets, lights to Epiphany, baths open every day of the holidays and a full concert season. Against. Shops close for two and a half days, the big museums close on the 24th and 25th, Christmas Eve evening needs a booked table, and the days are short and cold: afternoons hover a few degrees above freezing and it is dark before five. For winter as a whole see Budapest in winter, and if you are still choosing the month, the best time to visit Budapest.

Good to know
When do the Budapest Christmas markets open and close in 2026?
Advent Bazilika on Szent István tér and Vörösmarty Classic Xmas on Vörösmarty tér both open on Friday 13 November 2026. The Basilica market closes on 1 January 2027. Vörösmarty runs until the early hours after New Year's Eve, but its craft stalls and children's train stay only until 28 December, and the square then turns into a New Year's Eve venue. Advent Óbudán on Fő tér opens on 27 November, and Gozsdu Udvar's market runs 4 to 23 December.
Are the Christmas markets open on 24 December?
Yes, for the morning and early afternoon. Advent Bazilika opens 11:00 to 15:00 and Vörösmarty Classic Xmas 10:00 to 14:00 on 24 December 2026. On the 25th and 26th the Basilica market opens 11:00 to 20:00 and Vörösmarty 12:00 to 18:00.
Are the Budapest Christmas markets open in January?
Only the Basilica market, and only on 1 January 2027, from 11:00 to 18:00. Vörösmarty closes after New Year's Eve, which it runs from 11:00 to 3:00. Under the city's lighting rules the street lighting stays up until Epiphany on 6 January, and Story of Lights in Gödöllő runs to 31 January.
Is Budapest open on Christmas Day?
Partly. On Friday 25 December 2026 shops and the big museums are closed. The two big markets open, the thermal baths open on holiday hours (Széchenyi opens 08:00 to 20:00), and public transport runs a holiday timetable. On Saturday 26 December the shops stay closed, while the National Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts reopen from 10:00 to 18:00.
Is 24 December a public holiday in Hungary in 2026?
Not under the rules in force on 25 October 2026. The 2026 work calendar makes Thursday 24 December a rest day, worked off on Saturday 12 December. A bill to make the 24th a permanent public holiday from this year was tabled on 23 September and debated in Parliament on 13 October, and the final vote had not taken place. If it passes, most shops would close on the 24th for the whole day.
Is Budapest worth visiting at Christmas?
Yes, if you want markets, lights, baths and concerts and can live without shops on the 25th and 26th. The markets run for seven weeks, the baths open every day of the holidays and December is concert season. Plan for the closures: book the evening of the 24th ahead, shop on the 23rd, and keep museum visits for the 26th or later.
Does it snow in Budapest at Christmas?
It snows most winters and rarely stays on the ground. December nights are below freezing and afternoons a few degrees above, and it is dark before five. Our December guide has the weather service's numbers.
