Indoor days
Palace of Wonders (Csodák Palotája)
What is it? Budapest’s hands-on science centre, now at its new home on Mátyás király út in Óbuda, with interactive exhibits, science shows and lab sessions.
Why it’s worth it Children push, pull and test things rather than read panels, which suits the five-to-twelve range best. Under-3s go free, but they will mostly enjoy the buttons.
Insider tip The centre keeps longer hours at weekends and in school holidays (10:00 to 19:00) than on school days, when it opens at 9:00 and closes at 18:00, so on a school day plan around the earlier 18:00 close.
The facts 1039 Budapest, Mátyás király út 24. School days Monday to Friday 9:00 to 18:00, ticket desk closes 17:00; weekends and school holidays 10:00 to 19:00, ticket desk closes 18:00. Adult 5,900 HUF; child aged 3 to 18, student and pensioner 4,900 HUF; under 3 free. Tickets at csopa.hu.
Tropicarium
What is it? An aquarium and small tropical zoo inside the Campona shopping centre in District XXII, built around a 12-metre shark tunnel with sand tiger sharks and reef sharks.
Why it’s worth it There is a lot packed into one building: rays you can touch, alligators under a tropical rain shower that falls every 15 minutes, and meerkats. The weakness is the trip out, since it is a long way south of the centre.
Insider tip Weekday visits after 17:00 are the cheapest tickets, and the ticket also gets you 20% off at KockaPark in the same mall.
The facts 1222 Budapest, Nagytétényi út 37-43. Open daily 10:00 to 20:00, ticket office closes 19:00. Adults aged 18 to 65: 3,900 HUF on weekdays after 17:00, 4,700 HUF on weekdays, 5,500 HUF at weekends. Children aged 2 to 18 and seniors: 2,900, 3,500 and 4,000 HUF. Insider tip Show your Tropicarium ticket for 20% off. The park is wheelchair accessible and parking at the mall is free.
The facts 1222 Budapest, Nagytétényi út 37-43, inside Campona. Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 19:00, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 20:00, Sunday 10:00 to 19:00. Adult 2,690 HUF, child, student and pensioner 2,290 HUF, family ticket 8,490 HUF, under 3 free. Details at kockapark.com.

Why it’s worth it Children run the show here and parents mostly watch, which is the point. It suits younger school-age children best; teenagers will be bored.
Insider tip You cannot book ahead except for birthdays and groups. Tickets are sold on site for a three-hour stay, so arrive early on a rainy weekend, and check the opening calendar on the website first because it is not open every day.
The facts 1061 Budapest, Király utca 8-10. Weekends and holidays: child 5,000 HUF, accompanying adult 2,500 HUF, family of two adults and two children 12,500 HUF, two adults and three children 15,000 HUF. Why it’s worth it For an animal-mad child of eight or over, it is a warm, short stop near Parliament. The catch is the age limit: entry starts at 8, so it does not work with younger siblings.

Insider tip From Zugliget, the Libegő chairlift climbs to János-hegy, a 20 to 30 minute forest walk from Normafa. It is closed for planned maintenance from 5 to 16 October 2026; after that it runs 10:00 to 17:00 until 25 October and 10:00 to 16:00 from 26 to 31 October. Getting around with children
BKK, the city transport company, lets children under 6 travel free with an adult, regardless of nationality, and no document is needed for this age group. From age 6, free travel depends on documents rather than age: a child who has not yet started school needs a kindergarten certificate, and a schoolchild needs a Hungarian student card, which covers free travel until the end of the school year in which they turn 14. A child without one of these documents needs a ticket. A single ticket is 500 HUF, a 24-hour pass 2,750 HUF and a 72-hour pass 5,750 HUF. The Budapest Card costs 17,990 HUF for 24 hours, 23,990 HUF for 48 hours and 29,990 HUF for 72 hours and includes public transport.

Do children travel free on Budapest public transport?
Children under 6 travel free with an adult, regardless of nationality, and need no document. A child aged 6 or over without one of these documents needs a ticket; a single is 500 HUF and a 24-hour pass 2,750 HUF.
