Winter nights in Budapest are cold and dark and long, which is exactly the condition Lumina Park Budapest is built for. Every winter it turns the grounds of the Palatinus Baths, Margaret Island’s big summer lido, into a lit-up trail that makes even the most jaded local reach for their phone camera.
The 2026/27 season theme is Alice in Wonderland: a 1.5 km walk past more than 200 light installations, sold by the organizers as a journey to the other side of the mirror.
What Exactly Is Lumina Park Budapest?
Lumina Park is an outdoor light installation exhibition that takes over the Palatinus Baths complex on Margaret Island every winter. Think of it as a cross between a Christmas market without the mulled-wine scrum, an outdoor art gallery, and the neighbor who goes gloriously overboard with the holiday lights.
The park has filled the Palatinus every winter since 2023, with a new theme each season: a journey through time in 2023/24, a fairy-tale film festival in 2024/25 and Magic World in 2025/26. Wonderland is the fourth.
Lumina counts more than 200 light installations along roughly 1.5 kilometers of path. That’s one every seven or eight meters, for those keeping score at home.
What Is the 2026/27 Theme?
This season follows Alice in Wonderland, with Lumina promising “magical encounters on the other side of the mirror”.
Lumina’s park map draws the route as one loop of about 1.5 km that starts and ends at a single entrance and exit gate, with more than 200 installations along it. Going around from the gate on the rabbit-hole side, the map marks the Rabbit Hole arches, the Closed Doors, Sad Alice, the Band, the food area, the carousel, the playground, the Garden of Wild Flowers, the Giant Slide light show, the Mad Hatter, the Mushroom Patch, the Santa Express (a mini train with its own 900 HUF ticket), the Queen of Hearts’ Castle, the Card Zone, Rain, the Labyrinth, the Ants, the Tea Party, the Clock, the Cats, the Laser Forest Masks and the Water Cinema, before the path comes back to the gate. The map labels are in Hungarian, so the rabbit hole is Nyúl ürege and the Mad Hatter is Őrült kalapos.
How Much Do Lumina Park Tickets Cost?
Lumina Park prices by day of the week: Monday to Thursday is cheaper than Friday to Sunday, and holidays count as weekend. Here’s the breakdown for 2026/27:

Reduced tickets are for schoolchildren, students up to 26, retirees, and disabled visitors and their companions. A family ticket covers two adults and two under-18s, or one adult and three. 💡 Pro Tip
Tickets are sold at the gate and online through the Tickets button on luminapark.hu, and at the ticket office you can also pay with an OTP or K&H SZÉP card. A ticket is valid only on the day it was bought for, so pick your date with the weather in mind. Weekend evenings get packed, especially over the Christmas fortnight, when the park stays open to 22:00.

The park runs from October 20, 2026 to March 7, 2027. Opening hours follow sunset, so they shift through the season.

The ticket office and last entry close one hour before closing time.
⚠️ CLOSED ON MONDAYS (except December 28 and January 4), and on November 1 and December 24. 16 and 17 February are not in Lumina’s timetable; check luminapark.hu before planning those two days.
How Do You Get to Lumina Park?
The park is located at the Palatinus Baths on Margaret Island, the same spot that’s a popular summer swimming complex. In winter, it transforms into Lumina Park.
⚠️ Don’t Drive!
Lumina itself advises against coming by car: the only place to park is a parking lot at the island’s northern tip, and it is small. Take public transport.
Best route: Take Bus 26 from either:
- Nyugati pályaudvar (Metro M3 blue line)
- Göncz Árpád városközpont (Metro M3 blue line)
Get off at “Palatinus Strand” stop. The entrance is right there.

Is Lumina Park Worth It?
If Christmas lights are not your thing, this is not your evening. But if you have kids, want a romantic winter date, or just need something to do on a cold Budapest evening that doesn’t involve another ruin bar, Lumina Park delivers.
The 5,000-5,300 HUF adult ticket buys an hour and a half to two hours outdoors, which is fair value for a Budapest evening, and Tuesday to Thursday is both cheaper and quieter than the weekend.

When Is the Best Time to Go?
The Margaret Island setting is a big part of the charm, and two pieces of advice hold every season: dress warmly, because you are outside for close to two hours to see the full route, and go on a weekday. Tuesday is a good pick; weekends get noticeably busier, especially once the season’s first photos start doing the rounds online.
Practical Tips for Visiting Lumina Park
- Dress warmly: You’ll be walking outdoors for 1.5-2 hours. Layers, hat, gloves, the works.
- Wear comfortable shoes: 1.5 km of walking on uneven ground.
- Go on a weekday: Tuesday-Thursday is noticeably less crowded, and cheaper.
- Arrive early: Get there when it opens to avoid peak crowds.
- Bring a card: The snack bars inside take bank cards and SZÉP cards only, no cash.
- No dogs allowed: Sorry, furry friends have to stay home.
- Check the weather: Rain makes the experience less magical. Snow? Actually pretty cool.
What Food Is Available at Lumina Park?
Several snack bars along the route sell hot drinks and snacks, so you do not need to eat before you go. Payment is card-only: bank cards and SZÉP cards, no cash. The park map puts the food area next to the carousel and the playground, with restrooms there and by the entrance.
Can You Combine Lumina Park with Other Activities?
Absolutely. Here’s a perfect winter day on Margaret Island:
- Afternoon: Explore Margaret Island during daylight: ruins, gardens, fountains
- Sunset: Grab dinner nearby (or eat at the food stalls)
- Evening: Lumina Park when it opens, at 16:30 for most of the season

How do you get to Lumina Park, and is there parking?
Take Bus 26 from the Nyugati pályaudvar or Göncz Árpád városközpont metro stations to the Palatinus Strand stop. You can park in the parking lot at the northern tip of Margaret Island, from where the park is a walk or a Bus 26 ride away, but Lumina advises against driving because that parking lot has limited space.
Can you take photos at Lumina Park?
Yes. Photos and videos are allowed for private use as long as they do not disturb other visitors, block the path or damage the installations. Drones are not allowed. Lumina also posts a photo gallery on luminapark.hu.
Is Lumina Park suitable for all ages?
Yes, it’s family-friendly and enjoyable for all ages. Under-2s go free, there is a family ticket, and an Alice in Wonderland theme is pitched squarely at kids. Under-14s must come with an adult. Bicycles, scooters and any other wheeled equipment are not allowed, so ask Lumina about strollers through its contact page (luminapark.hu/en/contact) before bringing one.
How long does it take to walk through Lumina Park?
The 1.5 km path takes most visitors 1.5-2 hours, depending on how many photos you stop to take (spoiler: many).
Do I need to book tickets in advance?
No. Tickets are sold at the gate and online through the Tickets button on luminapark.hu, and the ticket office closes an hour before the park does. Weekend and holiday evenings are the busiest, so Tuesday to Thursday is both calmer and cheaper.
Is there a cloak room or lockers?
No. You’ll carry everything with you. Pack light.
Is Lumina Park wheelchair accessible?

What happens if it rains?
The park stays open in light rain, but heavy rain can affect the experience, and as an outdoor venue it can close on a storm warning. Tickets are valid only for the day they were bought for and cannot be used on another day, so check the forecast before you buy.
