Candles on the tables, ornaments on the walls, and a menu that warns you up front: your squire will not bring you a fork. Sir Lancelot, a few minutes from Nyugati station, has built its whole evening around a knight’s feast, where a platter of pork knuckle, goose legs and ribs lands in the middle of the table and everyone digs in by hand.

It is a loud, messy, shared kind of night, and that is the point. It suits groups of friends, birthdays and families who want dinner to be the entertainment, and since October 2026 it opens at noon every day, so you can turn it into a long medieval lunch instead. A platter for two costs 20,900 HUF (about $64), and the restaurant promises generous portions.

What the evening is like

The restaurant writes its own pitch in mock-medieval Hungarian verse: candles on the tables, ornaments on the walls, “the mood of times bygone.” The menu keeps it up line by line. Dishes carry names like Sword in the Leg, the Red Knight’s Lance and Merlin’s Basket, and each description is a little rhyme from the cook. Even the service fee is announced as the wage of “my page and cook”, with an invitation to call for the lord of the castle if you think they did not earn it.

The no-fork rule is the part to plan for. Order a platter, roll up your sleeves, and treat it as finger food on a grand scale. If you are the kind of diner who wants a knife and fork for a steak, this is not your restaurant.

The operator says it pours from a list of 100 Hungarian wines, and the drinks list adds a long run of pálinka, the Hungarian fruit brandy, from plum and sour cherry to quince and apricot. Our pálinka guide explains the styles before you order.

What about knights and belly dancers? Sir Lancelot’s website publishes no show program and no show times, so we can’t tell you which nights have entertainment. Ask when you phone to book, especially if a show is the reason you are going. If it is, Apostolok runs fire-breathers, belly dancers and jesters every night from 18:00 to 23:00, free with dinner.

What you eat: the platters

The shared platter is the heart of the menu, and every standard platter works out at about 10,000 to 10,600 HUF a head.

Platter Price Per head
Plate for 2 20,900 HUF (about $64) 10,450 HUF (about $32)
Plate for 3 31,900 HUF (about $97) 10,633 HUF (about $32)
Plate for 4 41,900 HUF (about $128) 10,475 HUF (about $32)
Plate for 6 59,900 HUF (about $183) 9,983 HUF (about $30)
Extra plate for 4 (adds duck liver) 55,900 HUF (about $170) 13,975 HUF (about $43)
Vegetarian plate (1 person) 8,900 HUF (about $27)

The plate for two holds a chicken leg skewer with zucchini, mushrooms and a cheese sauce, two roast goose legs with red cabbage, a 1.3 kg roast pork knuckle, a roast pork fillet with lecsó potatoes, glazed pork ribs and spicy chicken wings, plus sides. The bigger platters swap the pork fillet for a grilled chicken, chicken legs skewered with apple and pineapple and spicy beef strips, and from four people up a pork and sausage skewer and grilled pike-perch; the plate for six also brings roast duck and braised lamb shank. The extra platter for four adds the Queen’s Dream, roast duck liver with potatoes.

The “főúri” set menus wrap a starter, pogácsa (a small savory scone) and tarragon ragout soup served in a bread loaf around the same platter, with a dessert of your choice from the menu. They cost 29,900 HUF (about $91) for two, 43,900 HUF (about $134) for three, 58,900 HUF (about $180) for four and 85,900 HUF (about $262) for six. Pick these if you want the full three-act feast rather than just the meat.

Feasts for one, named after knights and King Arthur, give each diner their own plate: an appetizer, pogácsa, a soup, a main, a side and often a dessert. The Sir Lancelot and Red Knight feasts are 10,990 HUF (about $34), Lady Melany 11,990 HUF, the Blue Knight 12,990 HUF, King Arthur 13,990 HUF, and Lancelot’s Challenge, built around 60 dkg of Angus beef, 20,990 HUF (about $64).

À la carte and drinks

If you would rather order your own main, the list runs from poultry through pork, beef, lamb, fish and venison.

  • Soups: 2,590-2,790 HUF (about $8-$9), including goulash, a venison ragout soup and onion soup in a bread loaf.
  • Mains: most poultry dishes are 5,990 HUF (about $18). The 1.3 kg pork knuckle is 6,990 HUF (about $21), two roast goose legs 10,990 HUF, venison with chocolate-blueberry sauce 12,990 HUF, and the tomahawk steak tops the list at 23,990 HUF (about $73). The menu says mains come with their sides and pickles.
  • Desserts: 1,990 HUF (about $6), among them strudel, túrógombóc (curd dumpling) and mákos guba, a poppy seed bread pudding.
  • Drinks: a 0.5 l Dreher on tap is 1,790 HUF (about $5) and a liter 3,550 HUF; Pilsner Urquell 0.5 l is 1,890 HUF. Pálinka runs 2,490-2,790 HUF (about $8-$9) a shot, and soft drinks and juices 1,650 HUF for 0.5 l.

Add the service fee to every figure: 15% on the food menu, 14% on the drinks list. The plate for two comes to 24,035 HUF (about $73) before drinks. Check the bill before you add anything more; our guide to tipping in Hungary explains how service charges work.

Prices are in HUF, which is what you pay on the bill. Converted at 1 USD = 328 HUF, the ECB rate on 23 October 2026.

Rates move, so treat the dollar figures as indicative.

Vegetarians, allergies and children

Vegetarians have one dedicated dish, the vegetarian plate of grilled cheese and grilled vegetable skewers with sides, at 8,900 HUF. Pescatarians have more choice: catfish, pike-perch, salmon and shrimp dishes, plus the Lady Melany feast with fruit soup and grilled pike-perch. The menu marks allergens with letter codes (G for gluten, L for lactose, T for egg, D for nuts and so on), and the key is printed at the end of the menu; tell the staff about any allergy when you order.

The website says nothing specific about children’s menus or high chairs. The platters are easy to share across ages, but ask when you call if you need either.

Birthdays, groups and cakes

The restaurant runs a standing birthday offer: hold your birthday dinner there with at least three friends, each ordering a main, and you get a 5,000 HUF voucher to use on a later visit. It is valid on the day or within five days either side, with proof of the date.

For a celebration cake, the “Royal Court” cakes come in six flavors, cut into 12 slices, at 22,900 or 24,900 HUF. Order them five days ahead on +36 20 923 6538. Company events and team-building dinners are handled through the contact details on the website.

For a big group, remember the one-bill rule: no split bills, no separate payments. Agree who pays before the platters arrive.

Getting there and what is nearby

Sir Lancelot is at Podmaniczky utca 14 in District VI, a short walk from Nyugati railway station, where metro M3 and trams 4 and 6 stop. From the station side it is a few minutes on foot.

That puts it in the same district as Andrássy Avenue and the Hungarian State Opera House, so an afternoon walk along the boulevard ends neatly at the table.

Sir Lancelot Compared With Apostolok

Sir Lancelot and Apostolok are Budapest’s two dedicated medieval dinner restaurants in our guides, and they are different nights. Sir Lancelot is about the platter: cheaper (20,900 HUF for two against 33,900 HUF at Apostolok), open from noon, and strict about the forks. Apostolok is about the show, with fire acts and jesters every evening on Kígyó utca in the inner city. Our side-by-side medieval dinner guide compares prices, booking and a Saturday knights’ feast in Visegrád.

The verdict

Book Sir Lancelot when you want to eat like a knight rather than watch one: bring a group, order a platter for the table, and come hungry. Call ahead, ask about the show if it matters, and remember the bill is one bill.
