The simplest places to leave luggage in Budapest are the staffed baggage desk at the airport, open 06:00 to 22:00 at 2,750 HUF per bag for up to four hours, and the MÁV lockers at Keleti, Nyugati and Déli stations, which follow station hours and close for a few hours each night. Kelenföld station has no lockers, so there the cloakroom in Etele Plaza next door is the answer; in the center, a staffed counter near Váci utca or the airportHUB at Kálvin tér covers a late flight.

Which one suits you depends on where your day ends. Store the bags on the route you take anyway: at the airport for a layover, at your departure station for an evening train, and near the 100E bus stop for an evening flight. Our airport to city center guide covers the bus itself.

At the airport: the baggage desk in Terminal 2

Budapest Airport’s baggage storage is a staffed desk run by the Excess Baggage Company, open 06:00 to 22:00 every day. Outside those hours, storage and lost property move to the bag-wrapping unit on the departure level of Terminal 2B, so a late arrival or a dawn flight is covered too. You hand the bags over, pay when you collect, and can also pre-book through Bounce, which bud.hu names as the online route.

Storage time Price per item
Up to 4 hours 2,750 HUF (about $8.50)
Up to 24 hours 5,500 HUF (about $17)
Up to 48 hours 8,000 HUF
Up to 72 hours 10,500 HUF
Each day after 72 hours plus 2,500 HUF

Every started period counts, and the price is per item, so a backpack and a suitcase are two items. Two cases for a full day come to 11,000 HUF, which is where a station locker or a city counter starts to look better if you are heading into town anyway. For layover timings, see our Budapest layover guide, and for the terminal itself, the Budapest Airport guide.

Keleti, Nyugati and Déli: the MÁV lockers

All three main stations have automatic luggage lockers (csomagmegőrző), in the same two sizes: 35 x 50 x 75 cm and 50 x 60 x 75 cm inside. A cabin case goes in the small one; a big checked case needs the large one.

  • Keleti: at underpass level, opposite the Utascentrum passenger center. The lockers follow station hours, 03:45 to 01:00 Monday to Friday and 03:45 to 02:00 at weekends. MÁV installed 111 compartments of different sizes when the Utascentrum opened in May 2023.
  • Nyugati: at the end of track 6, next to the ticket machines, outside the main station building, 02:30 to 00:50 daily.
  • Déli: in the main hall, on the left as you come in by the entrance nearest the international ticket office, 03:00 to 00:30 daily.

MÁV’s station pages give no fee and no payment details for the lockers, so check the price and the accepted payment on the machine before you load it. The nightly gap matters: a train that reaches Keleti after 01:00 on a weekday leaves you without locker access until 03:45. For which trains use which station, see our Keleti, Nyugati and Déli station guide.

Staffed counters beside Keleti and Nyugati

If the bag is too big for a locker, or you want someone to hand it to, the Budapest Luggage Storage company runs counters in the malls beside both stations. At Westend, next to Nyugati (Váci út 1-3, underground level, in the middle near McDonald’s), it is open 09:00 to 20:00 and charges 400 HUF per bag per hour, by cash or card. Its Arena Mall counter, a short walk from Keleti (Kerepesi út 9, first floor), is open 10:00 to 19:00.

Per-bag hourly pricing adds up with two or three cases over a long day, and Westend’s terms charge €10 to open the counter after hours, so plan to be back well before closing.

Kelenföld and Etele: no station lockers, but a cloakroom next door

Kelenföld is a busy rail, bus and metro hub, but MÁV’s list of services for the station includes no luggage lockers. Its waiting room is open 04:00 to 24:00, which helps with a wait, not with bags.

The fix is Etele Plaza (Hadak útja 1), the mall beside the station. Its cloakroom (ruhatár) takes bags for 400 HUF per bag per hour (coats 400 HUF per day). The mall is open 06:00 to 22:00; the cloakroom counter is on level -1 in the service center and is listed as open 10:00 to 20:00, so for an early train drop the bags elsewhere.

Váci utca and the center: for a late flight or the last day

The airportHUB at Kálvin tér 4 is Budapest Airport’s own city-center outpost, a few steps from the Kálvin tér stop of the 100E airport bus. It is open 08:00 to 20:00 daily and stores bags by the hour:

Storage time Price
Up to 1 hour 1,000 HUF
1 to 3 hours 2,500 HUF
3 to 6 hours 3,900 HUF
6 to 9 hours 4,900 HUF
From the 10th started hour 6,000 HUF (about $18.50) per day

Ask whether the rate is per bag when you drop off, since the tariff does not say. The bigger trick is the city bag drop: if you fly Wizz Air on a flight leaving between 12:00 and 24:00 (Baku and Tel Aviv excepted), you can check your bag in at Kálvin tér at least four hours before departure, after online check-in, for 3,500 HUF (about $10.50). The bag travels to the airport in a sealed vehicle, and you walk straight to security.

Near Váci utca, Budapest Luggage Storage has a counter in the courtyard of Régiposta utca 7-9, a short walk from Deák Ferenc tér, open 09:00 to 19:00, and another at Klauzál utca 11 near Blaha Lujza tér, open 09:00 to 19:00. Its own site prices those at €1 per bag per hour or €10 per bag for 24 hours, with 10% off for booking online.

Lion’s Locker (Vasvári Pál utca 11, District VI) is the self-service option: code-locked lockers in a café, 40 x 60 x 80 cm and 50 x 90 x 90 cm, at €5 per bag per day with free access during the day, card payment accepted. It is open 08:00 to 19:00 Saturday to Monday and 08:00 to 18:00 Tuesday to Friday. Spending the evening in town before a night train or flight? Lockers or a staffed counter, and what it costs

The booking networks work the same way: you pick a partner shop, café or hotel on the website or app, book a drop-off and pick-up window, and show the booking when you hand the bags over. Prices are quoted in euros.

Network Price on its Budapest page Cover per booking Notes
Bounce From €1.95 per day; most listings €3.50 Up to €10,000 Free cancellation; a location on the airport arrivals floor
Radical Storage From €1.90 per day; most listings €3.90 €10,000 No standard size or weight limit
Nannybag From €2.50 small bag, €4.90 suitcase, €6.90 large item, per day €10,000 Paid in advance
LuggageHero €1.49 per hour or €4.90 per day, plus €1.99 per bag once €500 Book now, pay later
Stasher From €1.49 per day €12,000 Some listings open 24/7

The choice comes down to three things. Lockers are cheapest in effort when you leave from that station, but they have fixed sizes and a nightly gap. Staffed counters take any shape, but most charge by the hour per bag and close in the evening. Booking networks win on hours and spread, since some partners are open around the clock, but the place is someone’s shop: read the listing’s opening hours and recent notes, and keep a second option for an evening pickup.

One cheap option is easy to forget: your hotel. Ask at check-in whether they keep bags on departure day, especially when the hotel sits on your way to the station.

Good to know

Is there luggage storage at Budapest Airport?

Yes. The Excess Baggage Company runs a staffed baggage storage desk, open 06:00 to 22:00 every day. Outside those hours the service is at the bag-wrapping unit on the departure level of Terminal 2B. It costs 2,750 HUF per item for up to 4 hours, 5,500 HUF for 24 hours, 8,000 HUF for 48 hours and 10,500 HUF for 72 hours, paid when you collect.

Are there lockers at Keleti station?

Yes. MÁV's automatic lockers stand at underpass level, opposite the Utascentrum passenger center. They are available while the station is open, 03:45 to 01:00 Monday to Friday and 03:45 to 02:00 at weekends. The small size measures 35 x 50 x 75 cm inside and the large one 50 x 60 x 75 cm.

Will a big suitcase fit in a Budapest station locker?

A cabin case fits the small locker. The large one is 50 x 60 x 75 cm inside, which takes most checked-size cases up to about 75 cm tall. For anything bigger, use a staffed counter or a booking network, which do not use fixed compartments.

Can I leave luggage at Kelenföld or Etele?

Not at the station itself: MÁV lists no luggage lockers at Kelenföld. Etele Plaza, next to the station at Hadak útja 1, has a cloakroom on level -1 that takes bags for 400 HUF per bag per hour; the counter is listed as open 10:00 to 20:00.

Can I leave my bags at the hotel after checkout?

Ask at reception when you check in. Hotels and many hostels keep bags for guests on arrival or departure day, and it is the cheapest option when the hotel is on your way to the airport or station.
