Budapest at night comes down to five kinds of evening: a free walk past the floodlit bridges and up Gellért Hill, a late soak in a thermal bath, an hour on the Danube, a round of ruin bars, or a quieter night with no bar at all. The metro runs until about midnight (about 1:00 on Friday and Saturday nights), and after that tram 6 and the 9xx night buses get you home on an ordinary 500 HUF ticket.

This page picks the night with you and then hands you to the guide that has the detail.

Free night: the bridges and the hill

Start on the Pest bank and walk across the Chain Bridge with the floodlit Castle District straight ahead. That walk is the city’s best free half-hour after dark, and our Chain Bridge at night guide has the viewpoints on both banks.

From the Buda end, climb Gellért Hill for the view that takes in both halves of the city. The park inside the Citadella walls is open 8:00 to 22:00 from November to March and 6:00 to midnight from April to October, and it costs nothing. The climb is steep, so wear proper shoes; routes are in our Gellért Hill guide.

The Fisherman’s Bastion is open day and night, and only the upper turrets charge a fee, so its lower terraces are another free night view, of Pest and the Parliament across the river. If you want to time it with the last light first, our sunset spots guide lists the best places to wait.

A hot soak after dark

A thermal pool steaming in cold night air is the Budapest evening people remember longest. Three choices cover most nights:

  • Friday: Széchenyi. The big yellow bath in City Park stays open until 22:00 on Fridays. The cash desk at the steam entrance closes at 21:00 and the pools empty at 21:40, so arrive by 20:00 for a proper soak.
  • Friday and Saturday after 22:00: Rudas. Night bathing runs from 22:00 to 3:00, with the rooftop pool over the Danube, for 15,000 HUF. Tickets are sold only online, and nobody under 14 is admitted. The night session is social rather than serene: the rooftop pool fills first, and if you want quiet, a weekday morning suits you better. Pack a towel and flip-flops. Night buses 907 and 973 stop near the bath for the ride home. Our Rudas night bathing guide walks you through the evening.
  • Sunday: Paskál. On Sundays the late bath is Paskál in Zugló, open until 22:00. It is a neighborhood bath rather than a landmark, and it is the one to know when the rest close at 20:00.

Our baths at night guide has the late bath for every night of the week and the cheaper evening tickets.

Sparty is a party, not a bath. It runs every Saturday from February to December at Széchenyi, from 21:30 to 2:00, entry closes at 1:00, and you must be 18. Book it as a club night with warm water, and read our Sparty guide before you choose a ticket.

On the water

An hour on a sightseeing boat after dark shows you both lit banks at once, the Parliament included, and it is the easiest night out to fit around dinner. Legenda’s Danube Legend, for example, is a one-hour evening cruise with a drink included. If you want the meal on board, a dinner cruise turns the boat into the whole evening, so choose it only when the cruise is the plan, not an add-on.

Our Danube cruise guide compares the operators and the piers, and the dinner cruise guide compares the menus and the boats.

Ruin bars, rooftops and a late drink

The ruin bars fill the courtyards of old apartment houses in District VII, around Kazinczy utca. Go in the early evening if you want to see the rooms and the junk-shop decor; go late if you want the crowd, the queue and the dance floor. Our ruin bars guide ranks them, starting with Szimpla Kert.

For a drink with the river and the Castle in view, a rooftop bar is the better choice than a ruin bar. Our rooftop bars guide covers which terraces are worth the climb, and from November the heated rooftop terraces guide has the ones that stay warm.

Live music, clubs and LGBTQ+ nights

When the night is about the band, start with our live music guide, which sorts the jazz clubs, the rock and indie venues and the bars with a stage. The LGBTQ+ nightlife guide covers the bars, the clubs and the monthly party circuit.

A night without drinking

Budapest after dark works fine without a bar. The baths and the boats above are the obvious picks; these three are the others.

  • The Budapest Eye. The wheel on Erzsébet tér turns until 23:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays; a standard ride is 4,900 HUF. The ride is short and the buildings around the square hide part of the river, so treat it as a quick lift over the lit center rather than the city’s best view. Our Budapest Eye guide weighs it up.
  • A táncház. A folk dance house is a social dance night with a live band and a teacher, and the point is dancing. Our folk dance guide has the beginner nights.
  • The opera or a concert. An evening at the Hungarian State Opera or an organ concert in a church fills a night with no drink involved.

November to New Year: the Christmas markets after dark

From 13 November the two big Christmas markets make the evening their busiest time. Advent Bazilika on Szent István tér runs until 1 January 2027, open 11:00 to 22:00 from Sunday to Thursday and until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and every afternoon from 17:30 a light show plays on the Basilica facade. Vörösmarty Classic Xmas on Vörösmarty tér opens 11:00 to 21:00, until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The two are a short walk apart, so one evening covers both.

Our Christmas markets guide has the holiday hours and the smaller markets, and the Christmas lights guide maps the best lit streets for the walk between them.

Sunday night

Sunday is the quietest night, but it is not empty. The Budapest Eye turns until 23:00, Paskál bath stays open until 22:00, and in season Advent Bazilika runs until 22:00 and Vörösmarty tér until 21:00. A walk over the Chain Bridge and up Gellért Hill works on any night. Plan the ride back for the weekday timetable: on Sunday night the last metro trains leave the center around midnight.

Getting home after the metro

Way home When it runs Ticket
Metro M2, M3, M4 Last trains from the center around midnight Sun-Thu, around 1:00 Fri and Sat 500 HUF single, or tap a bank card at the gate
Tram 6 Around the clock on the Grand Boulevard 500 HUF single
9xx night buses When the metro stops, across the city 500 HUF bought in advance, 700 HUF from the driver

The exact last departures from Sunday night to Thursday night: the M2 leaves Deák Ferenc tér at 0:00 in both directions, the M3 leaves at 0:03 toward Újpest-Központ and 23:56 toward Kőbánya-Kispest, and the M4 leaves Kálvin tér for Kelenföld at 0:04. On Friday and Saturday nights each runs an hour later.

A bank card tap buys a ticket only on the metro and the 100E airport bus, not on night buses, so buy a ticket in the BudapestGO app or at a machine before the bars close. Our night bus guide has the lines from the party district and the front-door boarding rules, and the taxi guide covers the licensed companies and the fares.

The center stays busy late and is generally calm. What repeats is small: pickpockets in packed bars and on the crowded tram 6, and the friendly stranger who leads you to a bar where the bill is absurd. Keep your bag in front of you and choose your own bars; the Budapest safety guide has the rest.

Keep your bag in front of you, pick your own bars, and look at the prices before you order.

What can I do in Budapest at night if I don't drink?

Plenty. Soak in a thermal bath (Széchenyi until 22:00 on Fridays, Rudas night bathing on Fridays and Saturdays), take an evening boat on the Danube, ride the Budapest Eye until 23:00, walk up Gellért Hill for the view, or join a táncház folk dance night, where the point is dancing, not drinking.

Is there a thermal bath open late at night in Budapest?

Yes. Rudas runs night bathing from 22:00 to 3:00 on Fridays and Saturdays for 15,000 HUF, with tickets sold only online. Széchenyi is open until 22:00 on Fridays, and on Sundays Paskál in Zugló stays open until 22:00. Cash desks close an hour before closing time.

What is open on a Sunday night in Budapest?

The Budapest Eye runs until 23:00, Paskál bath until 22:00, and in season the Advent Bazilika market until 22:00 and the Vörösmarty tér market until 21:00. The metro follows the weekday pattern on Sunday night, so the last M2, M3 and M4 trains leave the center around midnight.
