For an organ concert in Budapest, go to St. Stephen’s Basilica: for most of the year its great organ plays on five days a week, and the Monday 16:30 concert is the only one included in the 2,600 HUF church ticket. For strings in a church, Matthias Church and St. Michael’s on Váci utca host evening concerts at 19:00, and Müpa runs a separate organ series in a modern concert hall.
The trick is that one church means four organizers. Each Basilica evening is sold by a different company at a different price, so match the night to your budget first, then buy from the seller the Basilica names for that night.

St. Stephen’s Basilica: Five Organ Days a Week

The Basilica holds regular concerts on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday for most of the year, and the Wednesday organ program fills the gap. The church warns that liturgy and other events can move the pattern, so check the night on its concerts page before you plan around it. Our St. Stephen’s Basilica guide covers the dome, the Holy Right and the opening hours.
Monday, 16:30: the one that comes with your ticket. The great organ plays with a singer or another instrument that changes week by week. A church hall ticket (2,600 HUF, about $8) or a combined ticket with the dome terrace and treasury (6,800 HUF, about $21) gets you in once, so this is the easiest concert to fold into a sightseeing day. Buy on the Basilica’s webshop or at the ticket office beside the church; enter through the main door.
Wednesday, 10:00 in English, 11:00 in Hungarian: Great Organ Face to Face. One of the Basilica’s organists takes you up to the gallery, explains how the Angster organ is built and plays it at close range. The ticket is valid for the gallery only, so the church hall, the terrace and the treasury need separate tickets. You meet at the main entrance, where staff check tickets before the organist leads the group up.
Tuesday and Sunday, 20:00: the crowd-pleasers. The program is the request list: Ave Maria, Bach’s Air, Mozart’s Alleluja, with a violinist, a trumpeter and singers on Tuesday, and the Duna String Orchestra joining on Sunday. Concerts in Budapest sells two categories, €55 and €60, priced in euros.
Thursday, 20:00: the organ night. Miklós Teleki plays a 70-minute program with a singer and a flutist, running from Vivaldi and Bach’s Concerto in D minor through Liszt’s Fantasy and Fugue on B-A-C-H to Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The Budapest Guide sells three seat categories by row, from €26 to €39, with student prices.
Friday, 20:00: two organs at once. Cathedral Organ Concerts uses both the great organ and the sanctuary organ, with trumpet and soprano: Charpentier’s Te Deum, Bach’s Toccata, Handel’s Water Music, Widor’s Toccata. It lasts 60 minutes and costs 7,500 to 12,000 HUF ($23 to $37) depending on category and date, with lower prices for students and pensioners. Tickets are sold online and at the main entrance from 10:00 on Thursday and Friday. The same organizer also runs gala nights in the Basilica, such as a New Year gala and Mozart’s Requiem, at 9,000 to 13,000 HUF ($28 to $40), where children under 6 are not admitted.
The Basilica’s etiquette rules apply at concerts too: shoulders covered, no miniskirts, shorts or tops, no hats for men, and no food, drinks or suitcases inside.

Matthias Church: Strings Under the Painted Vaults
The coronation church on Castle Hill hosts sacred music through the year, from its own choir to visiting choirs, orchestras and chamber groups, with programs from Gregorian chant through the Baroque to the twentieth century. Its steady visitor concerts are the Duna String Orchestra evenings with the violinist Gyula Gabora, on most Monday and Friday evenings in season at 19:00 (check the organizer’s calendar for the dates): Pachelbel’s Canon, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Four Seasons, Bach’s Air, Albinoni’s Adagio and Franck’s Panis Angelicus. Concerts in Budapest sells them in two categories, €55 and €60. If you want to see the players and not only hear them, take the front category: the orchestra sits at floor level, and from the back benches you get the full sound but little of the stage.
Dress for the church, not for the concert hall. The church’s visitor rules ask for a skirt or trousers to the knee and covered shoulders, with a shawl over a top that does not cover them, and staff can refuse entry in costume or wedding clothes. Coming specifically to take photos or film needs written permission in advance. For the tower climb, the ticket types and the stories in the stones, see our Matthias Church guide.

St. Michael’s on Váci utca: The Four Seasons Off the Shopping Street

The small eighteenth-century church in the middle of Váci utca is a few minutes’ walk from the river. Its evenings are string programs by the Duna String Orchestra with Gyula Gabora at 19:00: Haydn’s St. Anthony Chorale, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, Albinoni’s Adagio, Grieg’s Holberg Suite, a Dvořák Slavonic Dance and Vivaldi’s complete Four Seasons. Seats cost €50 or €55, and €55 or €60 on the dates around Christmas. It starts an hour earlier than the Basilica nights, which leaves time for dinner afterwards.

Müpa: The Organ Outside a Church
Müpa’s Béla Bartók National Concert Hall has an organ that the venue counts among the largest concert-hall organs in the world: 6,804 pipes, 92 stops and five manuals, built by Pécsi Orgonaépítő Manufaktúra with Mühleisen of Stuttgart and inaugurated in May 2006. The resident organist, László Fassang, curates the organ programs.
The series to look for:
- Gallery Concerts: about an hour long, with the audience seated only on the galleries. The acoustic canopy that normally hangs under the ceiling is lowered to the floor, so you sit level with the pipes. One strand plays film soundtracks on the organ.
- Organ Duels: organists competing in playful rounds.
- Organ Expedition: music with the story and the mechanics of the instrument explained.
- Concerts tied to the church year, alongside silent-film accompaniment and jazz evenings.
Prices are set per event, so check the event page. A paid ticket also gets you free parking on the day of the performance, and trams 1, 2 and 24, buses 15 and 54 and the H7 suburban railway stop nearby. Müpa sits outside the center, by the Rákóczi Bridge, so allow for the trip.

The Dohány Street Synagogue Organ: No Concert Series, but a Tour
The Dohány Street Synagogue has one of Hungary’s largest organs, with nearly 4,500 pipes, in use since the synagogue opened in 1859. The synagogue has no regular organ concert series, and its concerts are one-off festival or gala events. Its visitor operator, Jewish Tour Hungary, sells guided entry and tours, and shows the organ up close on its Secret Tour: a 90-minute private tour of ten extra places in the complex, arranged by email. Our Dohány Street Synagogue guide covers the tickets, the Saturday closure and the dress code.

Advent and Christmas in the Churches
From the first Sunday of Advent to Christmas, the regular nights get company. The churches add Christmas programs, such as Bach and Charpentier in Matthias Church, Müpa programs Christmas organ concerts, and Cathedral Organ Concerts runs a New Year gala in the Basilica. The dates change every year, so look at the venues’ program pages and our Christmas concerts in Budapest guide, which lists this season’s dates.

Are there Christmas organ concerts in Budapest churches?
Yes. Every Advent the churches and the concert halls add Christmas programs to their regular nights, from Bach in Matthias Church to Christmas organ concerts at Müpa. The dates change each year, so check our guide to Christmas concerts in Budapest and the venues' own program pages.
