Budapest Museums Worth Visiting, Ranked by Time Cost

Three museums earn their hours on a first trip to Budapest: the House of Terror, Hospital in the Rock, and the Museum of Fine Arts. Everything else on this page is a trade against your afternoon, and some trades suit a short trip better than others.

Start with the one that is no trade at all, because it is shut, and the one that has just come back.

One closed, one open again

The Museum of Illusions is closed. In August 2026 its own site announced a temporary closure for renovation, with no reopening date; check museumofillusions.hu before you go. The Light Art Museum on Hold utca is open again. Its fifth immersive exhibition, EGO, runs from October 2026 to the end of February 2027, in a former market hall a few minutes’ walk from Parliament. Details are in its own section below.

Not by quality. By hours, door to door, including the travel where the location makes travel unavoidable. That is the number that decides whether a museum fits your trip, and it is the number nobody publishes.

Worth a half day

Museum of Fine Arts

What is it? The big classical collection at Hősök tere, at the top of Andrássy út, in a building that takes a while to cross even when you are not stopping. The permanent displays run from Egypt and classical antiquity to European and Hungarian art up to the end of the eighteenth century.

Why it’s worth it Because it is the one museum here where four hours is a reasonable plan rather than an endurance test. Two temporary shows bracket the autumn: the Egyptian exhibition on how ancient artists worked runs to 25 October 2026, and from 30 October to 28 February 2027 the ground floor hosts Bonjour Monsieur Gauguin!, on the circles of the Post-Impressionists and Symbolists. The trade-off is planning: big temporary shows sell hourly entry slots, so book ahead.

Insider tip On the second Friday of each month the museum stays open from 12:00 to 20:00, with entry until 19:00, which turns it into an evening plan. The second Saturday of each month is its family and youth day, with free entry to the permanent exhibitions; the conditions are on the museum’s discount page.

The facts 1146 Budapest, Dózsa György út 41. Closed Monday, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, ticket desk and last entry 17:00. Permanent exhibitions 5,800 Ft, 2,900 Ft discounted; a permanent ticket is good for the whole day. The Gauguin ticket is 7,800 Ft, 3,900 Ft discounted, or 6,800 Ft and 3,400 Ft on weekdays, and big temporary shows sell hourly entry slots. Hungarian National Gallery

What is it? The Hungarian collection inside Buda Castle, from Gothic art and late Gothic winged altarpieces through the nineteenth century to art after 1945, plus an international collection from Courbet to Baselitz.

Why it’s worth it The museum itself suggests 1.5 to 3 hours for the permanent collection, and that is about right. The dome is included with any exhibition ticket, so the city view from the top costs nothing extra. Then add the walk up to the Castle, and the afternoon is gone.

Insider tip The dome can be visited until 17:00, weather permitting: its balconies close in bad weather, so go up first if the sky looks uncertain.

The facts 1014 Budapest, Szent György tér 2. Closed Monday, open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00, ticket desk and last entry 17:00. Permanent collection 5,800 Ft, 2,900 Ft discounted, which also admits you to the cabinet exhibitions. Budapest Card holders get one free entry to the permanent exhibitions. Tickets bought on Jegymester can be moved to another date before the day; tickets from the Ligetplusz webshop cannot. Details at mng.hu.

Aquincum

What is it? The Roman town under Óbuda, a proper archaeological park with two museums on the site and large covered areas of worked stone.

Why it’s worth it There is more ground here than a two-hour plan allows for, so treat two hours as the floor rather than the whole visit.

Insider tip Winter turns it into a different product. From 1 November to 31 March the site runs 10:00 to 16:00, and the 15:30 last entry limits when you may arrive, not how long you may stay, with closing beginning at 15:40. What shrinks is everything else. The daylight is short, the archaeological park opens only when the ground is dry and not slippery, and the House of the Painter and the Symphorus mithraeum drop to three ten-minute openings a day each. Go between April and October or leave it for the next trip.

The facts Adult 3,000 HUF. The reduced 1,500 HUF rate follows the card, not the passport: a valid student card issued in an EEA member state buys it whatever nationality you hold and with no age limit, so someone from outside the EEA who studies in the EEA qualifies. What is restricted to EEA citizens is the 6 to 26 age band, the 62 to 70 pensioner band and the family rate. The combined BHM+ ticket is 5,500 HUF and is valid for a month across Aquincum, the Kiscell Museum, the Budapest Gallery and the Castle Museum. Summer hours are Tue to Sun 10:00 to 18:00 for the exhibitions and 09:00 to 18:00 for the park. Closed Mondays, and shut on 1 November, on 24, 25, 26, 28 and 31 December and on 1 January 2027, so the winter timetable first runs on Tuesday 3 November. One date sits outside all of it: 31 October 2026 is its own day, 16:00 to 23:00, for Samhain. Pinball Museum, but only after dark

What is it? A basement on Radnóti Miklós utca in Újlipótváros full of playable machines, all of them set to free play for one flat fee.

Why it’s worth it The time question is the wrong one here. You pay once and can play every working machine in the collection until closing, and almost nobody leaves in under two hours. The scheduling is what actually matters: it does not open until 16:00 from Wednesday to Friday, 13:00 on Saturday and 11:00 on Sunday, and it runs to midnight from Wednesday to Saturday. It cannot compete with a daytime sight because it is not open when the daytime sights are.

Insider tip This is what you do when the light has gone and the museums have shut, which in Budapest in November is around four in the afternoon. The machines take no coins or tokens, so there is nothing to change at the door.

Worth about two hours

House of Music Hungary

What is it? The Sou Fujimoto building in City Park, with the Dimensions of Sound permanent exhibition underneath a perforated golden canopy that is worth a look on its own.

Why it’s worth it The museum’s own estimate is that the exhibition takes about two hours, and it recommends planning two to three. It is interactive and self-paced, built around the milestones of European and Hungarian music history.

Insider tip Admission runs in 30-minute slots, with visits starting every half hour, and weekend slots sell out fast: at weekends the museum asks you to come only with a ticket bought in advance. Bags and backpacks of any size go in the free cloakroom, and an online ticket gets you two hours of free parking in the Museum Underground Garage.

The facts Dimensions of Sound 5,500 Ft; students aged 6 to 26 with a student card and pensioners with ID 3,300 Ft; children aged 4 to 6 1,750 Ft. The building and box office close on Mondays; Tue, Wed, Thu and Sun run 10:00 to 18:00, Fri and Sat to 20:00. The permanent exhibition itself runs 10:15 to 17:50 with last admission at 16:15, and on Fridays to 19:50 with last admission at 17:45. Memento Park

What is it? The communist statues, evicted from the city’s squares in 1993 and parked in a field on the far side of Buda, together with the Barrack Cinema, a photo exhibition and the Stalin tribune.

Why it’s worth it The park itself is about an hour of genuine looking and maybe two hours of wandering. The other hour is transit, and there is no way around that: it is the M4 to Kelenföld station and then a bus, either BKK’s 101B, 101E or 150, or a Volánbusz on the 710, 720 or 722, which takes about 15 minutes. Budget three hours of your day for two hours of museum.

Insider tip Most of the park is open air, so this is a fair-weather booking; on a wet day the Barrack Cinema and the photo exhibition are the parts under cover. Dogs on a lead are welcome, the car park is free during opening hours, and the grounds are not wheelchair accessible.

House of Terror

What is it? Andrássy út 60, the former headquarters of both the Arrow Cross and the communist secret police, now a museum of the twentieth century’s two dictatorships.

Why it’s worth it Two hours is the real figure. You can move through faster, but the rooms are built as installations, and they reward slowing down.

Insider tip There is no online ticket purchase. Tickets are sold only at the museum, and because the number of visitors inside at one time is limited, the museum asks you to allow extra time at the entrance on busy days. Arriving at 10:00 on a weekday is the whole strategy.

Hungarian National Museum

What is it? The national collection on Múzeum körút, in the neoclassical building where the 1848 revolution got its opening speech.

Why it’s worth it Two to three hours covers the permanent exhibitions properly, and ninety minutes gets the highlights. The current temporary show, American Dream, on Hungarians in the United States, is included in the permanent ticket.

Insider tip Kálvin tér is two minutes away on the M3 and M4, so the travel cost is close to zero. That makes it the easiest museum here to slot into a half-empty afternoon.

The facts Múzeum körút 14-16, 1088 Budapest. Permanent exhibitions 3,500 HUF; 1,750 HUF for Hungarian and EEA citizens aged 6 to 26 or 62 to 70; family ticket for two adults and one to three children 7,200 HUF; group rate 3,000 HUF for more than ten. Free for Hungarian and EEA citizens under 6 and over 70 and for teachers, free for everyone on 15 March, 20 August and 23 October, and free on the third Saturday of every month for Hungarian and EEA citizens under 26 and for under-18s together with up to two close relatives. Ludwig Museum

What is it? Hungary’s museum of contemporary art, in the west wing of the Müpa building on the Pest bank in District IX, holding Hungarian, central European and international work from the 1960s onwards.

Why it’s worth it Two hours covers both exhibition floors at a walking pace, and the building gives you what the collection cannot: the halls, the balcony and the terrace all look out over the Danube, so the river view is inside the ticket. What pushes the visit past two hours is the travel, not the art.

Insider tip The floors keep different hours. Until 11 October 2026 the second-floor show, Black Mirror, runs to 20:00 while the third-floor collection display, BING BANG, closes at 18:00, and the ticket office stays open until 19:30. After the Black Mirror show closes, check which floor runs late before planning an evening visit.

The facts 1095 Budapest, Komor Marcell utca 1, inside the Müpa building. Tram 1 or the H7 suburban railway to Közvágóhíd, or trams 2 and 24 and buses 23, 54 and 55 to the Müpa stop. A single exhibition is 3,300 HUF and the combined ticket is 5,000 HUF; family tickets start at 5,100 HUF for one parent and one child. Closed Mondays. Worth an hour or so

Light Art Museum

What is it? Light and new-media art in a listed former market hall on Hold utca, about 2,000 square metres over two levels. Its fifth immersive exhibition, EGO, explores how memory, relationships, society and our digital images shape who we think we are.

Why it’s worth it The museum plans 70 to 100 minutes, the route is free-flowing, and the evening hours make it an easy fit after a day of sightseeing. It suits all ages, and children under 4 go free.

Insider tip Online and on-site ticket prices can differ, so compare before you buy. The museum is wheelchair accessible with a lift, and it is five minutes on foot from Parliament.

The facts Hold utca 13, 1054 Budapest, two minutes from Arany János utca on the M3; bus 15 stops at the entrance. EGO runs from October 2026 to the end of February 2027. Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 20:00 (last entry 19:00), Friday to Sunday 10:00 to 21:00 (last entry 20:00). Hospital in the Rock

What is it? A wartime emergency hospital and nuclear bunker inside the cave system under Buda Castle, visitable by guided tour only.

Why it’s worth it The duration is not your decision, and that is the selling point. The guided tour is 60 minutes, and you can put it in a calendar and trust the number. Nothing else on this list behaves like that.

Insider tip Children under 6 cannot visit, and the museum does not recommend it for under-12s without a parent’s consent. One adult and one child aged 6 to 18 visit on a single family ticket, so the child goes free. Capacity is limited, so buy a timed ticket online in peak season.

The facts The English-language tour is €30 for adults 18-65, €22 for seniors over 65 and students 19-26 with ISIC, €15 for children 6-18, charged in forint at the National Bank’s daily mid rate (about 11,000 Ft for the adult ticket). The Hungarian-language tour is cheaper: 9,500, 7,000 and 4,800 Ft for the same tiers. Free audio guides in nine languages are available during the tours. Cinema Mystica

What is it? Ten rooms of immersive light, sound and projection art inside the Párisi Udvar at Ferenciek tere, explored at your own pace rather than along a labelled route.

Why it’s worth it The operator plans 60 to 90 minutes, and the free-flow format lets you set the pace: budget an hour and a half and it never feels rushed. It needs no shared language and stays open until 22:00 every day. The one caveat: some rooms are dark and the effects strong, which can be too much for small children.

Insider tip Book a time slot online. Capacity is limited, it often sells out, and the slot spares you the queue. The operator says the exhibition is wheelchair accessible and asks visitors with specific needs to get in touch beforehand. Our Cinema Mystica guide has the full visit plan.

Full price 6,900 HUF at the desk or online, students and pensioners 5,800 HUF, children aged 3 to 10 4,400 HUF, groups of ten or more 5,800 HUF each. Szamos Chocolate Museum

What is it? Six rooms on the history of cocoa and chocolate on the upper floor of the Szamos café on Kossuth tér, with a 1920s sweet shop, a century-old chocolate workshop and marzipan models that include a miniature Parliament.

Why it’s worth it Location, not size. It is right by Parliament, so it fills the hour before or after a Parliament tour at no extra travel cost. You can walk through on your own any day, or join a guided Chocolate Tour with tastings of dark, milk, white and ruby chocolate, marzipan and cocoa beans, and a chocolate bar you decorate and take home.

Insider tip The guided tours run only on the dates published on the museum’s booking calendar and must be booked online in advance; groups of more than ten must register at least 24 hours ahead.

Pesti Vigadó

What is it? The 1865 concert hall on the Pest embankment, with exhibitions inside and a panorama terrace looking straight across at the Castle.

Why it’s worth it An hour to ninety minutes buys you the foyer, the Grand Staircase, the Grand Hall, the current exhibitions and that terrace, for 3,500 HUF. A Danube view at that price is roughly one rooftop cocktail, and nobody up there is trying to sell you a second one.

Insider tip It is open every day, 10:00 to 19:00, which quietly makes it one of the best Monday buildings in central Pest. The house closes on some days and individual floors shut for events, so check the opening-hours changes on vigado.hu for the day you want.

The facts Vigadó tér 2, 1051 Budapest. General admission (Házjegy) 3,500 HUF covers the foyer, Grand Staircase, Grand Hall, panorama terrace and every current exhibition. Vigadó Gallery ticket 3,000 HUF, a single exhibition 2,000 HUF, and an annual exhibition pass is sold at the ticket office (current price on vigado.hu). Family ticket for two adults and two children 7,000 HUF; Budapest Card 20% off; free for under-6s, over-70s and large families. Better saved for a longer trip

Bartók Béla Memorial House is the one we would save for a longer visit. The exhibition, Bartók’s Silence, reopened in a trial phase in June 2026 and takes under an hour. The house is up in the Buda Hills, which is an hour of your day in transit, and it is not wheelchair accessible. On a three-day trip, that time is better spent elsewhere.

The concert is a different proposition entirely. A recital in that room is two to three hours end to end and it is one of the better small-hall experiences in the city, so if the programme lines up with your dates, go for the music and treat the exhibition as the thing you see in the interval. The Museum of Illusions is off the list for the simple reason that it is shut, as above.

What to do with a Monday

Half the city’s museums close on Mondays, which sends a lot of people to a bath by default. It does not have to.

Six options is a full day. Hospital in the Rock at 10:00 puts you in the Castle District by 11:00, the Szamos Chocolate Museum by Parliament and the Light Art Museum on Hold utca are a short walk apart in the afternoon, and Pesti Vigadó and its terrace sit on the embankment. Cinema Mystica at Ferenciek tere runs until 22:00 if the evening needs filling. Memento Park swaps in for any of them if the weather holds and you want the trip out. Where the Budapest Card actually pays

Only worth buying if you are doing three or more of these, and the coverage is uneven.

The National Gallery (5,800 Ft), the National Museum (3,500 Ft) and Memento Park (3,000 Ft) add up to 12,300 Ft of admissions before you have touched public transport, which is where the card earns the rest of its keep.

How to fit these into three days

One museum a day. That is the whole recommendation, and it is the one most itineraries get wrong.

Museums are dense, and two in a day means you remember neither. Put the House of Terror on a morning with nothing heavy after it. Put Hospital in the Rock inside a Castle day, where its fixed hour is a feature rather than a cost. Give the Museum of Fine Arts a whole afternoon, or save it for a trip when you can give it four hours.

Then keep an evening in reserve. Cinema Mystica until 22:00, the Light Art Museum until 20:00 or 21:00, or the Pinball Museum until midnight, and the two hours between dinner and bed stop being wasted. That is the part of the museum day nobody plans, and it is free time you already have.
