Cafe Brunch Budapest: Ten Doors, One Menu, and Which One to Walk Through

Cafe Brunch Budapest is not a café. It is ten doors, eight in Budapest, one in Szentendre and one in Győr, sharing one menu, one bakery, one coffee roaster and one 15 percent service charge. Whether it is good is the wrong question, because the plate is the same in the Festetics Palace on Zrínyi utca and on the coach-stop embankment at Belgrád rakpart. What changes is the view, the queue, whether anyone will hold you a table, and whether there is a play corner to park a four-year-old in.

So this is a sorting guide, not a review. The breakfast roundup tells you the chain exists. This page tells you which of the ten to walk into, what the bill comes to with the service charge on it, and what to order.

Which branch, for which morning

• First visit, kids in tow, postcard required: Bazilika, Zrínyi utca. Basilica terrace, play corner, high chairs, walk-in only.
• River: Rakpart, the small, calmer room facing Gellért Hill, or Fővám tér, the bigger, busier terrace by the Liberty Bridge and the Market Hall.
• Early coffee to carry off: the Bakery at Hajós utca 31, from 7:30 on weekdays, before any restaurant in the group unlocks.
• A table with your name on it: Anker, next to Deák tér, books inside every day. Lánchíd does the same in Buda. Rakpart and Brunch Bistro book weekdays only.
• Leaving the city: Szentendre and Győr book inside and outside every day, both have play corners, and Győr is cheaper.
• The original, for the garden and the fountain: Opera, Hajós utca 26/b. Also the longest peak-time waits and the least even service in the group.

What the bill actually comes to

Every restaurant in the group adds 15 percent to the bill. It is mandatory, it goes to the staff, and it prints as two lines, one marked 5 percent and one 27 percent: Hungary’s two VAT brackets, not two charges. Then the card terminal asks for a tip on top, 5, 10, 15 or 0 percent. The 0 is a real button, and pressing it is arithmetic, not an insult. This is the most common source of friction at the big Pest branches, where a tip screen after a charge people did not know about reads as pushy. The wider rules are in the tipping guide.

So a bundás kenyér and a cappuccino, 5,240 HUF on the card, come to 6,026 HUF (about $19) on the bill. Two people on avocado toast, Eggs Benedict and a cappuccino each pay 13,547 HUF (about $43) at the terminal. Mid-to-upper for a Budapest breakfast. The plates are big, built on three eggs, and a pancake stack between two is planning, not meanness.

Győr prints its own list, 200 to 400 HUF below Budapest on most plates and about 100 HUF below on coffee. Szentendre matches Budapest and adds the one item nobody else has, a Brunch Lángos with tomato ragout, a poached egg and hollandaise at 4,250 HUF (about $14). Payment is cash in forints or euros, Mastercard, Visa and the SZÉP card. Oat, almond, coconut and lactose-free milk exist; gluten-free bread goes under any egg dish, sandwich, soup or salad. No children’s menu.

The two orders that define the place

Bundás kenyér is Hungary’s egg-fried bread, served here the way it is meant to be eaten: savoury, with garlic sour cream, no syrup in sight. The plain version at 3,950 HUF is the order if you have never had one. The stuffed version, töltött bundáskenyér, packs chicken ham, egg and Cheddar between the fried slices, adds a fried egg on top and a salad, and at 4,250 HUF is a lunch in a breakfast’s clothes. The pancake stack is the other reason there is a queue. Four American-style versions: Nutella with fruit, strawberries with white chocolate, or maple syrup at 3,950 HUF each, and the house Cafe Brunch Pancake with dark chocolate chips, maple syrup, butter and fruit at 4,150 HUF. The sweet French toasts, caramel, blueberry and apple-cinnamon, sit on the same dessert list at 3,950 HUF, made on the group’s own kalács: a different dish from the savoury bundás kenyér.

The plate looks like the picture on the menu, which is more than most picture-heavy menus can say. Lunch, from 11:30, is two soups and five salads; a hot main at one o’clock is the wrong plan for this door.

Booking: six say yes, three say no, one says email

Brunch Bistro, Rakpart, Anker, Lánchíd, Szentendre and Győr take online bookings. Opera, Bazilika and Fővám tér do not, full stop. The Bakery takes them by email.

The small print matters more. In Budapest the bookable table is always inside; no Budapest terrace can be reserved. Anker and Lánchíd book every day. Rakpart and Brunch Bistro book weekdays only, and Brunch Bistro says in the same breath that it seats guests first come, first served. Nobody in the group takes a same-day booking. Groups of six or more pay a non-refundable EUR 10 a head; at Rakpart every booking pays it, taken off the bill. A booked table is held 15 minutes.

At the walk-in branches there is no ticket, no app and no list: people stand outside and wait. On a weekend at Opera or Brunch Bistro that is a real wait; at Bazilika early on a weekday it is none.

The ten doors, one by one

Bazilika, Zrínyi utca, District V

The one to send a first-timer to. It sits in the Festetics Palace building on the pedestrian street between the Basilica and the Chain Bridge, up to 65 seats inside and 70 on a terrace facing the dome. Opened 2021. Play corner, high chairs in numbers, dogs welcome, misters over the terrace in hot weather. Walk-in only. Empty at 8:00 on a weekday, full by brunch time, and even full it turns tables fast enough that a family usually gets sat quickly. The staff are not always sure which dishes are vegan, so ask precisely. M3 Arany János utca is about five minutes on foot; tram 2 stops at Széchenyi István tér at the bridge end of the street.

Opera, Hajós utca 26/b, District VI

The original, open since 18 September 2017, refurbished in 2020, on the pedestrian stretch of Hajós utca with a terrace, a small garden and a fountain. Forty seats inside, about as many outside. Walk-in only, no play corner, blankets on the terrace in cold weather. The busiest and most uneven branch: food arrives fast one visit and slowly the next, the long waits cluster at peak and around tables of six or more, and service swings the same way. The toilets are few for the room.

The Bakery, Hajós utca 31, District VI

Across the street from Opera, and the group’s engine room: the bakery workshop opened in this basement in 2022, supplies every restaurant daily, and reopened with a seating area in 2025. Weekdays 7:30 to 18:00, weekends and holidays 8:00 to 16:00. Sourdough, croissants, New York rolls, sandwiches, túrós batyu, coffee, juice, and pastries to take away, which no restaurant in the group promises. High chairs and a changing table. Reservations by email.

Brunch Bistro, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út 19/b, District VI

The group’s second restaurant, spring 2019, opposite Arany János utca metro. About 60 to 65 seats inside and 50 on a street terrace with the Basilica in view. Play corner, high chairs, dogs. Weekday inside bookings online, otherwise first come, first served. The terrace is the reason to come; the interior is plain. This is the branch where the view and the bill argue most, and where sweet plates draw wasps in summer. Decaf is no trouble here.

Fővám tér, Fővám tér 2-3, District V

Opened 18 September 2020, a minute from the Great Market Hall, by the Liberty Bridge. Forty seats inside, a terrace over the Danube, the bridge and the market. Walk-in only. The only branch that lists a playground rather than a play corner.

Rakpart, Belgrád rakpart 18, District V

Opened 2025 on the Pest embankment between the Elisabeth and Liberty bridges, facing Gellért Hill and the Liberty Statue. Thirty-four seats inside, the smallest room in the Budapest set, plus a terrace. Weekday inside bookings online, deposit on every booking, deducted from the bill. No play corner. It seats people straight away mid-morning and is the quieter riverside option, with one caveat: the terrace faces a coach stop, and coaches idle there with engines running. Upstairs, the kitchen smell carries. Five minutes on foot from Fővám tér.

Anker, Anker köz, District VI

Opened 2025 in the pedestrian passage between Deák Ferenc tér and Király utca, a minute from the three-line metro interchange, large terrace facing the Budapest Eye. Books inside tables online every day, table held 15 minutes. No play corner. Dogs welcome. Mad Scientist craft beer on the list.

Lánchíd, Lánchíd utca 7, District I

The tenth door and the ninth restaurant, the first in Buda, opened 2026, steps from Clark Ádám tér and the Castle funicular, below the palace, terrace on the Chain Bridge. Books inside online every day, no same-day, group deposit applies. Play corner, dogs. Too new to have settled into a character. No metro: buses and trams at Clark Ádám tér, or tram 2 to Széchenyi István tér and a walk over the bridge.

Szentendre, Dumtsa Jenő utca 16

On the main pedestrian street of Szentendre, two minutes from the Danube promenade, opened 2025. Inner garden with tables under a tree, terrace, play corner, dogs, air conditioning inside. Books online for inside, garden and terrace, every day, limited outdoor slots, no same-day. The Brunch Lángos is only here. The H5 suburban railway from Batthyány tér takes about 40 minutes, then six on foot.

Győr, Baross Gábor út 11-13

Opened 1 March 2026 on the old town’s main pedestrian street, the biggest unit in the group: 90 seats inside, a 50-seat private room, a 48-seat terrace. Books inside and outside online, every day, limited terrace slots, no same-day. Play corner, dogs, Mad Scientist beer, afternoon cocktails, and the group’s cheapest list. Trains run from Budapest-Keleti.

Every restaurant: 8:00 to 16:00 daily, kitchen closes 15:30. Bakery: 7:30 to 18:00 weekdays, 8:00 to 16:00 weekends and holidays. No same-day bookings anywhere; groups of six or more pay EUR 10 a head to book, and at Rakpart every booking pays it, taken off the bill.

The short version

Bazilika for a first morning with children. Rakpart for the river without the crowd, Fővám tér for the river with the market. Anker if you would rather book than queue. The Bakery if it is 7:45 and you want a croissant in your hand rather than a chair. And the HÉV to Szentendre takes 40 minutes, and the lángos is only there.
