Best Breakfast in Budapest: Start With the Opening Hours

If you want breakfast in Budapest tomorrow morning and you would rather not think about it, book Két Szerecsen on Nagymező utca. Its breakfast menu runs every day, 8:30 to 11:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 11:15 at weekends, and it is the most reliably bookable room on this list.
That is the whole difficulty with breakfast here. The cooking across the well-known places is good and fairly similar, so the thing that decides your morning is not which kitchen is best. It is which door is unlocked when you get there, whether you can sit down, and whether anyone will hold you a table. Sort by that and the list arranges itself. Two things in that table are worth saying out loud.
Szimply is closed on Sundays. It sits in the Röser udvar courtyard across from the Great Synagogue, it is a lovely room, and the Sunday closure is exactly the kind of detail that slips off a listings page. The kitchen also stops half an hour before the room does. If you have it pencilled in for a Sunday morning, move it.
Blueberry Brunch runs later at the weekend, not shorter. Weekdays it is 8:00 to 16:00; Saturday and Sunday it opens at 9:00 and stays until 17:00. That is the opposite of what almost everywhere else does, and it makes it the useful one for a slow Sunday start.
The queue, and whether you can book
Five of the rooms listed here will hold you a table, which is still more than the morning queues around town suggest. Sort the rooms by that and a morning stops being a gamble.
The ones that take a booking. Két Szerecsen confirms online bookings within 24 hours, and for a table within the next 24 hours you phone instead, which makes it the one to use when the morning has to run to a plan. Vintage Garden runs its own reservation page. Kelet books through a widget rather than a conversation. Rumpus books its daily tiki brunch through its reservation page, with slots from 9:00 to 14:30. Cafe Bakery Budapest on Hajós utca takes them by email. Four of the seven Cafe Brunch Budapest rooms book online, never for the same day, and a party of six or more pays a non-refundable EUR 10 deposit per head, taken off the final bill.
The ones that say no, in writing. Blueberry Brunch is the clearest: walk-ins only, groups by email. Behind the Basilica, it is small and it fills, and the room turns over briskly once it does. The Cafe Brunch branches that do not take bookings, the Opera room on Hajós utca among them, put it just as bluntly. Cookie Beacon is the second flat no, at both of its rooms, and one of those is a couple of doors along the same street at Hercegprímás u. 15, so a queue you do not fancy at number 17 has an alternative within sight of it.
The ones that publish nothing. Butter Brothers and Szimply. Turning up is the plan at both, so build the morning around their opening times rather than around a phone call.
The rooms, and the one thing that decides each
Cirkusz, Dob u. 25. A busy breakfast room in District VII, where many visitors stay. Expect to queue and expect to share a table, and check its current opening hours on its own channels before you go.
Butter Brothers, Lónyay u. 22 in District IX. The early one, open from 7:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, a start only the Cafe Bakery counter on Hajós utca matches. The catch is the weekend, when it opens at 8:00 and closes at 15:00.

Kelet, Bartók Béla út 29. The Buda-side answer, and open well into the evening, from 7:30 on a weekday and 9:00 at the weekend, running to 23:00 either way. Book-lined, doubles as a book exchange, and you order and pay at the counter before you sit down, which catches people out. It gets loud when it is full.
Két Szerecsen, Nagymező u. 14. A coffeehouse in the old sense on Budapest’s theater street: a Parisian-style bistro that has been serving the neighborhood from morning coffee to late dinner for a quarter of a century.
- Why it’s worth it: the breakfast menu covers every kind of morning, from bundáskenyér with chive sour cream (2,990 HUF) and eggs Benedict three ways (3,490 to 5,290 HUF) to a full English (5,390 HUF) or a smoked salmon breakfast (6,390 HUF), and it is the most reliably bookable room on this list. It also works when breakfast is really a late brunch before a matinee. The trade-off: the breakfast menu stops at 11:00 on weekdays and 11:15 at weekends, and a 13% service charge is added to the bill.

Szimply, Károly krt. 22. Light, health-forward cooking, and the portions are sized to match. If what you want is a big cooked plate, one of the other rooms suits you better. There is no queue problem here, which makes it a useful choice on a busy Saturday. Just not on a Sunday.
Cafe Brunch Budapest, seven brunch rooms across the city, every one of them 8:00 to 16:00 daily, plus a bakery counter. This is the “there will be one near wherever you are staying, on any day” option, and nobody else here offers that. Two Hajós utca addresses are easy to mix up: the Opera branch at 26/b is a sit-down room on the standard 8:00 to 16:00, while Cafe Bakery Budapest at number 31 is a separate bakery counter with seating, open 7:00 to 17:30 on weekdays and 8:00 to 16:00 at weekends. If you want the early end of that street, it is number 31 you want. Blueberry Brunch, Hercegprímás u. 17. Behind the Basilica, the highest-regarded room on this list, and the one that will not hold you a table.
Cookie Beacon, Hercegprímás u. 15 and Ferenciek tere 1. Two rooms, both in District V, both open 8:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 9:00 to 17:00 at weekends, and neither of them takes a booking. The first is a couple of doors from Blueberry Brunch behind the Basilica; the second sits at the Váci utca end of Ferenciek tere. Cookies are baked in house every day, there is a cheesecake line, and the menu carries vegan and vegetarian plates, some vegan as they come and some made that way on request. Eggs Benedict on cheddar scones is 4,600 Ft, an espresso 900 Ft in the first room and 790 Ft in the second. Vintage Garden: come for the courtyard
Vintage Garden on Dob utca is the flower-covered courtyard you have already seen in photographs, in District VII, and it opens at 8:00 every day. Timing is the thing to know: the breakfast menu runs 9:00 to 11:00, then a brunch card takes over until 16:00 and the Italian dinner menu after that. Arrive before 11:00 if it is breakfast you are after, and book through its own reservation page if the morning has to work to a plan.

Rumpus: brunch under the tiki lights
Rumpus Tiki Bar & Kitchen, Király u. 19 in District VII, a few minutes from Deák Ferenc tér. A tiki cocktail bar that now runs a themed brunch every day, 9:00 to 16:00, before the bar side takes over in the evening. The tropical interior stays as it is by day, and the house promises the same “theatrical service” from brunch to late night, so this is the room for a slow, late brunch rather than an early coffee. Brunch tables book through its reservation page, with slots from 9:00 to 14:30; brunch prices are not published online.

Before you follow an older list
Two rooms that still turn up on brunch roundups are gone for good. Zoska on Ferenczy István utca has closed permanently, though at least one listings site still publishes its opening hours as though you could walk in this morning. Fruccola has closed at both of its central addresses, Kristóf tér and Arany János utca. The lists have not caught up, so if a guide sends you to either, that is the age of the guide talking.
If it is coffee rather than a sit-down plate that you are after, the specialty roasters are a separate map, and so are the grand cafés. For bread to take away instead, start with the artisan bakeries. What to order once you are sitting down
None of the above tells you what a Hungarian actually eats in the morning, and the answer is mostly not what is on these menus. Cafe Brunch Budapest keeps identical hours every day of the week, so Sunday is the same as any other morning there. Kelet on the Buda side runs 9:00 to 23:00 on Sundays, Cookie Beacon runs 9:00 to 17:00 in both of its rooms, and Két Szerecsen and Vintage Garden are open too. The one to know about is Szimply, which is closed on Sundays, and Butter Brothers, which shuts at 15:00 at weekends rather than 21:00.

At weekends more of them push back than hold their time: Cafe Brunch Budapest, Szimply and Vintage Garden open exactly as they do midweek, while Butter Brothers, Blueberry Brunch, Cookie Beacon, Kelet and Két Szerecsen all start later. Blueberry Brunch is the one that also runs an hour longer to compensate.
Where can you get an all day breakfast in Budapest?
Several places serve breakfast until 16:00, which covers most of what people mean by all day. Cafe Brunch Budapest, Blueberry Brunch and Cookie Beacon all run to 16:00 or 17:00. The exception to watch is Vintage Garden, whose breakfast card runs 9:00 to 11:00 before a brunch menu takes over until 16:00, so the thing you saw in a photo may not be orderable by the time you arrive.
