To watch Hungarian folk dance in Budapest, book the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble at its own stage, the Hungarian Heritage House on Corvin tér, where November seats run from 3,900 to 6,900 HUF; the quicker tourist-format option is the Rajkó Folk Ensemble’s 19:00 show on Király utca from 9 euros. To dance it yourself, go to a táncház (dance house): the Heritage House runs one every Saturday from 19:00 with a beginners’ course for 2,800 HUF, and Fonó runs a Wednesday night with its own beginner group.

The two are different evenings. A show is seventy-odd minutes in a seat watching professionals. A táncház is a social dance night with a live band, where someone teaches the steps of one village or region, and then the floor is yours until the small hours.

Prices are in HUF, which is what you pay at the box office or in the webshop. Converted at 1 USD = 322 HUF, the ECB rate on 4 November 2026. Rates move, so treat the dollar figures as indicative. The Rajkó show is priced in euros by its seller, so no conversion is given for it.

Hungarian State Folk Ensemble at the Heritage House

What it is: The country’s flagship folk company, the Magyar Állami Népi Együttes, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this season. Its home is the Budai Vigadó, the building of the Hungarian Heritage House (Hagyományok Háza), and its shows are full theater productions with the ensemble’s own dancers and orchestra rather than a medley of greatest hits.

Why it is worth it: This is the closest a visitor gets to the real professional standard of Hungarian folk dance, at local prices. The weakness, for a traveler, is that each production has a theme (wine, the peasant year, a folk-song collector), so pick by date rather than by title.

Insider tip: Arrive a quarter of an hour early to find your hall and use the buffet before the show.

Date Production Time Seats
6 and 7 November A bor dicsérete (In Praise of Wine) 19:00 3,900 / 5,300 / 6,900 HUF (about $12 / $16 / $21)
19, 20 and 21 November Gyökerek és szárnyak (Roots and Wings), about 75 minutes in one part 19:00 5,300 / 6,900 HUF (about $16 / $21)
28 November Közös ég alatt (Under a Shared Sky), a joint show of the ensemble and the Örökség children’s and youth folk art association, about 90 minutes in one part 18:00, Színházterem No price on the show page
5 December “Szállj el, madár…” Kallós Zoltán öröksége (a tribute to the folk-song collector Zoltán Kallós) 15:00 and 19:00 3,400 / 4,900 / 6,400 HUF (about $11 / $15 / $20)

If you are up at Fisherman’s Bastion in the afternoon, Corvin tér is downhill from there on the same Buda side. For the ensemble’s Christmas family show at Müpa, see our Christmas concerts guide.

Rajkó Folk Ensemble: the 19:00 show on Király utca

What it is: A one-hour folklore performance by the Rajkó Folk Ensemble, a professional company founded in 1950, sold by Hungária Group, which has run folklore evenings for foreign guests since 1995. The program starts with arrival and a welcome drink from 18:30, then two 30-minute halves at 19:00 and 19:50 with a 20-minute break.

Why it is worth it: It is built for visitors: a fixed start, a short running time, music and costumes from several regions, and the option to make it dinner. It is a show for an audience, not a theater premiere, so if you want the State Folk Ensemble’s level of production, book Corvin tér instead.

The packages: show with welcome drink 9 to 19 euros; with goulash soup and bread 14 to 28 euros; with a three-course dinner 34 to 57 euros. Prices vary by ticket type (adult, student, child, senior). The webshop also lists a goulash soup and show option that is free for Budapest Card holders, who must enter their card number when booking. Under the seller’s terms there is no right of withdrawal: you can cancel only if you bought the optional cancellation insurance, up to 12 hours before the start, and that surcharge is not refunded.

Danube Folk Ensemble: an Advent evening at Várkert Bazár

The Danube Folk Ensemble (Duna Művészegyüttes) spends most of this season touring Hungarian towns and schools. The date for visitors on the company’s own calendar before the new year is its Advent show, Angyalok szárnyán (On Angels’ Wings), at Várkert Bazár on Sunday 29 November at 19:00. The calendar names no price, so check ticketing on the ensemble’s site before you plan around it.

Táncház: how a dance house works

A bronze relief of a man and a woman dancing in folk dress, dated 6 May 1972 and inscribed Az első budapesti táncház

The táncház movement began in Budapest in the early 1970s, when young city people started learning village dances from village musicians, and it never stopped. A night has a rhythm: the early part is teaching, usually one region’s dances over several weeks, then the band plays for open dancing until late, with a short break or two for singing.

Heritage House Saturday táncház

What it is: The Heritage House’s own weekly dance house in its Átrium, every Saturday from 19:00 to 1:00. It calls itself an introductory dance house, meaning anyone who walks in should leave having danced, and each cycle teaches one region for several weeks, closing with a ball. The November cycle (7, 14, 21 and 28 November) teaches the dances of Gyimes.

Why it is worth it: It has a separate course for complete beginners and returners. The drawback is that a Gyimes cycle is a cycle: in week three the regulars will be ahead of you, which is a reason to come in week one.

Insider tip: The box office is open from 18:00 to 22:00. If you arrive later, you can only buy online, so buy ahead. Only food and drink from the Átrium buffet may be consumed in the building during the dance house.

  • Course and dance house: 2,800 HUF (about $9)
  • Dance house only, from 21:00: 2,000 HUF (about $6)

Fonó: Wednesday dance nights and Friday bands

What it is: Fonó Budai Zeneház in Újbuda, a private music house that opened in 1995 and is home to several regular dance houses. Its Wednesday series, Fonó Szerda, runs from 19:00 to 23:59; the current cycle teaches the dances of Magyarpéterlaka, in Transylvania, with a beginner group and an advanced group taught by different instructors, plus song teaching. The next listed Wednesday is 11 November.

Why it is worth it: Partners swap continuously during teaching, so you do not need to bring a partner. Fonó is farther out than Corvin tér, and its calendar is listed one event at a time, so check the program page for the next Wednesday before you go.

Friday nights: Fonó also runs band-led dance houses on listed Fridays, such as the Berka Együttes Moldavian dance house on 13 November and the Kaptza Zenekar string band dance house on 27 November, both from 20:30. Tickets for those are 2,500 HUF in advance and 3,000 HUF on the day.

  • Fonó Szerda: 2,300 HUF in advance (about $7), 2,900 HUF on the day (about $9)

With children: Aprók tánca on Fridays

The Heritage House’s children’s dance house, Aprók tánca, runs on Fridays from 17:00 to 18:30 in the Átrium: dancing, games, singing and a craft activity tied to the season’s folk customs, with a different instrument each week. Entry is 1,400 HUF per person over age 2 (about $4), adults included, and no booking is needed. The listed dates are 6, 13, 20 and 27 November and 4 and 11 December. For more ideas with children, see our family activities guide.

In summer: free táncház on the Várkert Bazár terraces

In summer the dance house moves outdoors. In 2026 Várkert Bazár held free folk dance evenings on its terraces on five Friday evenings from 19:00 between 26 June and 28 August, three hours each, with instructors for beginners and live bands. For next summer, check the venue’s event page.

Your first táncház: what to expect

  • Come for the teaching. Arriving at the start time is what turns a night of watching into a night of dancing. The later hours belong to people who already know the steps.
  • No partner, no problem. Rotation during teaching is normal, and asking someone to dance is normal too. A “no thanks” is not personal.
  • Clothes: what you would wear to walk around town, shoes that turn on a smooth floor, a layer you can shed.
  • Getting home: the Saturday dance house ends at 1:00, so look at our night bus guide before you set out.
  • Still want more music? Our live music guide covers the folk and world-music bars, and the Festival of Folk Arts fills Buda Castle with folk crafts every August.

Good to know

Do I need a partner for a táncház in Budapest?

No. At Fonó's Wednesday dance house partners change throughout the teaching, and the organizer says you can arrive alone or as a couple. The Heritage House describes its Saturday táncház as an introductory one for anyone who walks in off the street, with a course for complete beginners.

How much is a Hungarian folk dance show in Budapest?

The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble's November and December performances at the Heritage House cost 3,400 to 6,900 HUF depending on the seat and the show. The Rajkó Folk Ensemble's 19:00 show on Király utca starts at 9 euros with a welcome drink, 14 to 28 euros with goulash soup and 34 to 57 euros with a three-course dinner.

What should I wear to a táncház?

Everyday clothes you can move in, and shoes with a smooth sole that let you turn. Costume is for the stage, not for the dance house. Bring a layer you can take off.

Can children go to a táncház in Budapest?

Yes, at the sessions made for them. The Heritage House runs Aprók tánca on Fridays from 17:00 to 18:30, with dancing, singing and a craft activity for 1,400 HUF per person over age 2, and no booking needed. Fonó runs a separate teenage dance house, the Kamasz Táncház.

Is the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble the same as the Danube Folk Ensemble?

No. The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble (Magyar Állami Népi Együttes) belongs to the Hungarian Heritage House and performs on Corvin tér. The Danube Folk Ensemble (Duna Művészegyüttes) is a separate company; in Budapest its next listed date is its Advent show at Várkert Bazár on 29 November at 19:00.
