Is Budapest Crowded? What the Tourism Numbers Mean for Your Trip
On this page
On an average August night in 2025, about 61,200 guests slept in Budapest’s hotels, guesthouses, hostels and rental apartments. On an average January night, about 34,500. Those two figures from KSH, Hungary’s statistics office, answer most of what people mean when they ask whether Budapest is crowded: the city never empties, and even its fullest month is well short of double its quietest.
What changes across the year is how much room you get. Below is what the official counts say about when to come, who you share the city with, how you will arrive, what a day costs other visitors, and how busy the baths are. The full tables, each with its source, are on our Budapest tourism statistics page.
How Full the City Is, Month by Month
The number that matters for a visitor is not the yearly total but how many people are sleeping in the city on a given night. Across 2025 that averaged about 50,000. Here is each month against that average.
| Month | Guest nights, 2025 | Guests on an average night | Against the year’s average |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 1,071,000 | 34,500 | -31% |
| February | 1,078,000 | 38,500 | -23% |
| March | 1,293,000 | 41,700 | -17% |
| April | 1,561,000 | 52,000 | +4% |
| May | 1,600,000 | 51,600 | +3% |
| June | 1,490,000 | 49,700 | -1% |
| July | 1,621,000 | 52,300 | +5% |
| August | 1,897,000 | 61,200 | +22% |
| September | 1,601,000 | 53,400 | +7% |
| October | 1,691,000 | 54,500 | +9% |
| November | 1,527,000 | 50,900 | +2% |
| December | 1,822,000 | 58,800 | +18% |
Guests on an average night is the month’s guest nights divided by its days. KSH counts all tourist accommodation, private rentals included. Day visitors who do not stay overnight are not in these figures, and a full city is not the same as a long line at one sight.
August is the peak, and December is right behind it. August averaged about 61,200 guests a night, 22% above the year’s average. December came second at about 58,800, ahead of every summer month except August. If you are coming for the Christmas markets, book your bed as early as you would for summer.
October is busier than its reputation. It was the third-fullest month of 2025, ahead of July and September, at about 54,500 guests a night. Plan an October trip like a high-season one and book ahead.
June is the warm month with the most room. It had about 49,700 guests a night, fewer than any other month from April to December and just under the year’s average. If you want summer weather without the August peak, look at June.
January to March is the quiet stretch. January averaged about 34,500 guests a night, 31% below the average, February about 38,500 and March about 41,700. This is when you get the most space, and cold air is exactly when the outdoor pools of the thermal baths are at their best.

Who You Share the City With
Budapest’s beds are filled mostly from abroad: foreign guests accounted for 87% of the city’s guest nights in 2025. The average foreign guest stayed 2.4 nights, about the length of a long weekend, so the city turns over quickly. Stay four or five nights and you will be here longer than the average visitor.
KSH publishes country of origin only for Hungary as a whole, but Budapest takes 65% of all foreign guest nights in the country, so the capital shapes that picture. Germans spent the most nights in Hungary in 2025, 2.91 million, and stayed the longest of the ten countries in our table, 2.9 nights on average. The United Kingdom and Poland followed with 1.61 million nights each, then Czechia, Romania and Italy. Visitors from Asia, counted together, spent 3.12 million nights in Hungary, more than any single European country.
Getting Here: The Airport in Numbers
Budapest Airport handled a record 19.6 million passengers in 2025, 11.7% more than in 2024, on 138,710 flights. That is about 380 takeoffs and landings a day. Of the countries KSH lists separately, the most passengers flew to and from Italy (2.48 million), the United Kingdom (2.34 million), Spain (1.96 million) and Germany (1.91 million).
What a Day Costs Other Visitors
Foreign visitors spent an average of 28,000 Ft per person per day in Hungary in 2025 (about $85), according to KSH’s survey of visitors at the border, which includes day trips. Among visitors from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany, Americans spent the most per day: 41,700 Ft (about $127). French visitors spent 40,400 Ft ($123), British visitors 36,100 Ft ($110), Italians 35,000 Ft ($107) and Germans 31,100 Ft ($95).
These are averages of what visitors reported spending, so read them as a sense of scale, not as a budget. For what a coffee, a beer or a tram ticket costs right now, see our Budapest price index.

The Baths in Numbers
Budapest has 52 baths and pools on KSH’s count, 46 of them open all year and 9 classified as medicinal baths. Together they logged 7.70 million visits in 2025, about 21,100 a day. KSH counts every visit, so the regulars who swim laps every morning are in that number alongside visitors. Our thermal baths guide helps you choose one.
The Latest Month
We update this section when KSH publishes a new month. The newest figures cover August 2026: 1.77 million guest nights in Budapest, 6.5% fewer than in August 2025, or about 57,200 guests a night. From January to August 2026 the city recorded 11.45 million guest nights, 1.4% fewer than in the same months of 2025. July 2026 was up 4.5% on July 2025.
A slightly softer 2026 means a little more room, not an empty city: August 2026 was still the fullest month of the year so far.
