Budapest in October Is the Calmest Month of the Year. Then the Clocks Go Back.

Most autumn guides to this city start with rain. The Hungarian weather service disagrees: 45 mm falls in an average October, and no month from May through November is drier. What October actually takes from you is light, and it takes a full hour of it in one night.

The month runs on a calendar rather than a mood. Nine fixtures with published dates, one national holiday, one clock change, and a single long weekend that swallows three of them at once.

Two of those need a note before you plan around them.

The Book Festival has moved to Hungexpo. Anyone who remembers it at Millenáris will go to the wrong place. It runs Thursday to Sunday, the guest countries are Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the literary focus is Ireland and the guest of honour is Colm Tóibín.

Háry János is a hundred years old this month, staged by the house that premiered it. Kodály’s work had its premiere in 1926 and the Opera House is running it from 17 to 25 October, in Hungarian with Hungarian and English surtitles. It is a daljáték, a Singspiel, so if you arrive expecting an opera or a ballet you have booked the wrong shape of evening. There are seven public performances: the premiere on Saturday 17 October at 18:30, Sunday 18 October at 17:00, then Tuesday 20, Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October at 18:30, Saturday 24 October at 18:30, and Sunday 25 October at 11:00. Friday 16 October is a dress rehearsal for the Opera’s OperaKaland youth programme, with no public tickets.

That last one is a Sunday morning matinee on the day the clocks went back. Set two alarms.

Liszt’s Birthday Week

Liszt was born on 22 October, and the fortnight before it carries a festival in his name, an art fair inside that festival and three concerts in the chamber hall next to his flat.

Liszt Fest runs from 8 to 22 October. It is Müpa’s autumn festival, Liszt Ünnep in Hungarian, and it reaches well past Liszt: Autechre plays on 8 October, Franz Welser-Möst brings The Cleveland Orchestra on 13 October, and Alan Gilbert, Leif Ove Andsnes and the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester play on 21 October. Liszt’s oratorio Christus closes it at Müpa on the 22nd, his birthday.

Art Market Budapest runs from 15 to 18 October at MTK Sportpark, Kerepesi út 17, and Liszt Fest lists it in its own programme. Doors open at 11:00 every day and close at 19:00, except on Friday the 16th, when the fair stays open until 21:00. Tickets are sold online and at the door. The organiser sends you by tram 1 from Keleti station or Puskás Ferenc Stadion, by trolleybus 13 or 80, or by metro lines M2 and M4.

The Liszt Birthday Festival puts three concerts in his own house. The Liszt Museum is the flat that was Liszt’s own at the Old Music Academy, the institution he was founding president of, and its chamber hall has held Saturday morning concerts since the museum opened in 1986.

Each concert costs 4,000 Ft (about $13), or 2,000 Ft (about $6) for students and pensioners. The museum’s address is Vörösmarty utca 35.

Prices are in HUF, which is what the ticket costs when you buy it online. Converted at 1 USD = 320 HUF, the ECB rate on 25 September 2026. Rates move, so treat the converted figures as indicative.

October Without Spending a Forint

Three good days out this month cost nothing at all.

• Watch the marathon on Sunday 11 October. The race starts at 9:00 from Pázmány Péter sétány, and the roadside is free.
• Go inside a power plant on Friday 16 October. On the Night of the Power Plants (Erőművek Éjszakája), more than 80 energy and utility sites across Hungary open their gates for guided visits. In Budapest, the Csepel combined-cycle gas turbine plant opens its turbine hall, boiler houses and central control room. Entry is free with registration, which opened on 1 October at eromuvekejszakaja.hu.

23 to 25 October Is the Weekend Everything Collides In

October’s pinch is sharper than September’s, and it is worth laying out because five unrelated things land on the same 72 hours.

The school break is the mechanism, and it is a decree rather than a feeling. The ministerial order setting the 2026/2027 school year fixes the last teaching day before the autumn break as Thursday 22 October 2026 and the first day back as Monday 2 November 2026. That is ten consecutive days when every Hungarian family with school-age children is free, starting on a national holiday. It is the same lever that empties Budapest on 1 September, running in reverse.

If you want that weekend, book it before you book anything else. If you want a quiet city, the last week of October is the quietest stretch on the published calendar.

What 23 October Actually Does to Your Day

Less than you would guess, with one difference this year: 2026 is the 70th anniversary of the revolution. The date marks the start of the 1956 uprising against Soviet rule, which Soviet forces crushed in November, and the day in 1989 when Hungary was proclaimed a republic. The state commemoration is at Kossuth tér, in front of Parliament, from 16:00. Heads of state and government from abroad have been invited, so plan for a wider security perimeter around the square than in an ordinary year. By custom the day opens with a military flag raising on the same square in the morning. The detailed timetable for both comes with the official programme in the final days before the holiday, so check it before you plan a walk past Parliament that day.

Getting around: trust the metro. On the 23rd, BKK runs its public-holiday timetable, so most lines, the metro included, run less often than on an ordinary Friday. BKK publishes the road closures and diversions in the days before, in the traffic news (Forgalmi hírek) on bkk.hu. In past years the lines cut short have usually been the surface ones near the ceremonies, above all the 2 tram, which runs along the Pest embankment right past Parliament. The metro keeps running underneath all of it.

Shops close, restaurants don’t have to. The general rule on a national holiday is that shops are shut, supermarket chains and mall shops included, and post offices close too. Restaurants, cafés and cinemas are allowed to open, and petrol-station shops and small convenience stores are the fallback for anything you forgot. Saturday the 24th is an ordinary Saturday. Museums: the National Museum is open and free. The Hungarian National Museum lists 23 October as an opening day, and its permanent exhibitions are free on all three national holidays; the free tickets are collected at the museum desk, not online. The House of Terror on Andrássy út, just reopened, charges admission again from Tuesday 29 September: 4,000 Ft full price, paid at the desk. It also has two new temporary exhibitions: Világtörténelmet írtunk 1956-2026 (We Made World History), a photo exhibition inside the museum, and Embervadászat 2006 (Manhunt 2006), an outdoor panel exhibition on the events of autumn 2006. Its holiday list marks 23 October as an open day, and its hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00.

Széchenyi opens at 08:00 on all three days. The operator lists 23 to 25 October as peak days with an 08:00 opening, and every holiday runs to its weekend hours, 08:00 to 20:00. On the Friday that means an hour later than usual and no late opening to 22:00. Treat the weekend as high season there, not as a closure. One part does close early: the Palm House, the bath’s premium lounge, shuts at 14:00 on the Friday.

Rudas runs on its Sunday schedule that Friday, and the Sunday schedule has no night bathing. The operator’s opening-hours page says it plainly: on 23 October the bath operates with Sunday opening hours. The bath closes at 20:00, with pools and saunas to be left by 19:40 and the cash desk shut at 19:00, and the Sunday column lists no night bathing, which normally runs on Friday and Saturday nights. So do not plan on night bathing that Friday. Saturday night is still on the schedule. The Turkish bath changes too: on a normal Friday it is men only until 10:45, on the holiday it is mixed all day from 06:00. Night bathing tickets are sold only online, so check the online ticket shop before you go.

A Long-Weekend Option: the Csaba Sausage Festival

The long weekend also has a good reason to head south-east. The 29th Csabai Kolbászfesztivál runs from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October at CsabaPark in Békéscsaba, four days of sausage-stuffing contests (children on Thursday, students on Friday, the international contest on Saturday, company teams on Sunday), cauldron cooking competitions, pig-killing breakfast traditions from several regions, and big-name Hungarian concerts every evening.

Tickets cannot be refunded or changed, so pick the day before you pay. It works as a long day trip and better with a night, but rooms in a small city on a festival weekend that is also a national holiday go first. The Hour That Disappears Overnight

Every month page tells you the evenings get shorter. October is the one where a specific night does most of the work.

Saturday the sun sets at 17:39. Sunday it sets at 16:38. Nothing astronomical happened in between: Hungarian decree 39/1996 ends summer time on the last Sunday in October, and clocks go from 03:00 back to 02:00. In 2026 that Sunday is the 25th, because the 31st is a Saturday.

Across the whole month sunset moves 1 hour 55 minutes earlier and total daylight drops 1 hour 39 minutes. Roughly half of the sunset shift happens in that one night.

Two things move with it. The Danube sightseeing boats change band on the same date: ten daytime departures a day through 24 October, four from the 25th, with the evening cruise holding at 19:00 throughout. And a Danube walk that worked as an after-dinner plan in the first week is a before-dinner plan in the last one.

Two Different Halves of One Month

The averages are real and they hide a slide, the same way September’s do.

October sits between the two steepest cooling steps in the Budapest year. On the daily maximum, September to October is a fall of 6.1 °C and October to November is 7.0 °C, the two largest month-on-month drops in the table. The month enters 6.1 °C below September and leaves 7.0 °C above November, which means a trip on the 3rd and a trip on the 29th are different holidays.

Two numbers in that table are the reason to come. 45 mm is the driest month in the whole warm half of the year, below May, June, July, August, September and November. And 2.12 m/s is the lowest mean wind speed of any month, against 2.72 in March. Still air is what makes 16 °C pleasant instead of raw, and it is what makes the walk between two outdoor thermal pools survivable in a wet swimsuit.

One number is the reason to think twice. Global radiation falls from 405.7 MJ/m² in September to 258.6 in October, down 36 percent, and October runs at 38 percent of July. Temperature is not what makes October feel like autumn here. Light is, and there is no jacket for that.

October and April are the same nights

Every guide compares October to September, which flatters it. The fairer comparison is the other side of the year.

The nights are indistinguishable. April takes the afternoon by 1.5 °C and is 9 mm drier, so on weather alone April wins and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What October has instead is on the calendar above, plus the calmest air of the year, plus water that has started to feel like the point rather than a novelty. Which Pools Are Actually Open

This is the October question nobody answers with a table, and both operators publish the answer.

Széchenyi rotates its three outdoor pools through maintenance and the windows never overlap, which is a better piece of scheduling than it gets credit for.

So, week by week: on 1 and 2 October you have the leisure and swimming pools, from 3 to 7 October all three, from 8 to 23 October the leisure and thermal pools, and from 24 October all three again. Two of three at worst, three of three on 13 of the month’s 31 days. The twenty indoor, thermal-area and steam-area pools and the ten saunas carry no closure at all. The Palm House (DaysPalm), the premium lounge, is shut all day on Tuesday 6 October; the rest of the bath keeps its normal hours. Palatinus is where the reputation is wrong. Margaret Island’s lido closes its outdoor half in three waves: the wave pool, strand pool, slide pool and both outdoor thermal pools on 30 August, the outdoor children’s and adventure pools on 13 September, and the Margaréta pool, which the operator expects to close on 11 October. Three outdoor pools carry no closing date at all, and the operator states the bath is open every day of the year, from 09:00 to 19:00 until 18 October and closing at 16:00 from 19 October, with four indoor pools and two of its three saunas running. October at Palatinus is not a shut lido. It is a working bath with a shrunken outdoor half, which is a different thing and a much cheaper crowd.

Two closures are simply permanent for now. Gellért has been shut since 1 October 2025, with the operator naming 2028 as the expected reopening. Király is closed indefinitely, with no reopening date published. Both are in our thermal baths guide, and if step-free access matters, the accessibility guide is blunter than the operators are.

October is also where our winter argument starts working. Cold air is what makes a 38 °C outdoor pool feel like the reason you came rather than a warm bath you queued for, and 7.2 °C nights are cold enough. The winter baths guide makes the full case; October is the month it becomes true.

Who Should Not Come in October

• Anyone who wants an outdoor swim as the point of the trip. The big lido pools close before October starts. Palatinus loses its wave pool, slide pool, strand pool and both outdoor thermal pools on 30 August.
• Anyone who books the last week expecting the first. Sunset moves from 18:23 to 16:28 and the daily maximum is on the steepest part of the year’s curve.
• Anyone arriving 23 to 25 October without a booking. National holiday, the first weekend of a ten-day school break, and the clocks going back, all at once.
• Anyone who wants long evenings outdoors. By 31 October it is fully dark before 17:30. This is the single largest thing April has that October does not.
• Anyone chasing the cheapest possible trip. January and February are the floor, and our cost guide says so with numbers.

The Month Either Side

Behind you: the Budapest Wine Festival, the Szabadság tér beer festival and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship are all September fixtures, and Budapest Park’s published season ends on 3 October, three days into the month. Our September guide has that calendar in full.

Ahead of you: All Saints on 1 November closes the school break, and the Christmas markets open later in November. Neither is an October trip, and stretching one into the other means a very different city. Some October regulars are not running this year, so check before you plan around them. Budapest Design Week has published no 2026 dates. CAFe Budapest, for years the autumn festival here, is no longer programmed by Müpa, whose autumn slot Liszt Ünnep has held since 2021. The Museums’ Autumn Festival is going ahead, but its organiser has said publicly that the ministry funding was not signed and it cannot contract institutions for programmes, so the Budapest listings are thin. Do not build a trip on it.

The Verdict

October is the month to come for thermal water, concert halls and walking, and it is the wrong month to come for daylight.

The case is three numbers. It is the driest month of the warm half of the year, the calmest month of the whole year, and the nights are April’s nights. Against that, the light collapses by a third and the last week is dark before 17:30.

Two decisions matter. Decide which side of the 25th you want, because the clock change splits the month into a version with usable evenings and a version without. And book 23 to 25 October early or skip it entirely, because a national holiday, a ten-day school break and a centenary weekend at the Opera all landing together is not a coincidence you can talk your way past at the front desk.
