Most autumn guides to this city start with rain. The Hungarian weather service disagrees: 45 mm falls in an average October, and no month from May through November is drier. What October actually takes from you is light, and it takes a full hour of it in one night.
The month runs on a calendar rather than a mood. Eight fixtures with published dates, one national holiday, one clock change, and a single long weekend that swallows three of them at once.

Two of those need a note before you plan around them.
The Book Festival has moved to Hungexpo. Anyone who remembers it at Millenáris will go to the wrong place. It runs Thursday to Sunday, the guest countries are Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the literary focus is Ireland and the guest of honour is Colm Tóibín.
Háry János is a hundred years old this month, staged by the house that premiered it. Kodály’s work had its premiere in 1926 and the Opera House is running it from 16 to 25 October, in Hungarian with Hungarian and English surtitles. It is a daljáték, a Singspiel, so if you arrive expecting an opera or a ballet you have booked the wrong shape of evening. The performances that are individually published are Friday 16 October at 18:00, Saturday 17 October at 18:30 for the premiere, Saturday 24 October at 18:30, and Sunday 25 October at 11:00.
That last one is a Sunday morning matinee on the day the clocks went back. Set two alarms.
23 to 25 October Is the Weekend Everything Collides In
October’s pinch is sharper than September’s, and it is worth laying out because four unrelated systems land on the same 72 hours.

The school break is the mechanism, and it is a decree rather than a feeling. The ministerial order setting the 2026/2027 school year fixes the last teaching day before the autumn break as Thursday 22 October 2026 and the first day back as Monday 2 November 2026. That is ten consecutive days when every Hungarian family with school-age children is free, starting on a national holiday. It is the same lever that empties Budapest on 1 September, running in reverse.
If you want that weekend, book it before you book anything else. If you want a quiet city, the last week of October is the quietest stretch on the published calendar.
What 23 October Actually Does to Your Day
Less than you would guess, and the baths are the useful case.
Széchenyi does not close, and it opens early. The operator lists 23 to 25 October in its peak and holiday block, the same category it gives the late-May weekend and the 20 August holiday, and on those days the bath opens at 08:00 instead of its usual hour. Treat the holiday weekend as high season there, not as a closure.
Rudas switches to its weekend schedule, and this one catches people. The operator’s rule is that the bath runs weekend hours on every public holiday and non-working day. 23 October is a public holiday falling on a Friday, so the long Friday timetable, the one that carries night bathing, is not what you get. You get Saturday. Anyone building a Friday evening around Rudas should build it around a different Friday.
For the ceremonies themselves, the shape repeats year to year: a flag raising at Kossuth tér in the morning, a commemoration around midday, and marches that close off parts of the centre for a few hours. Our public holidays guide carries the background.
The Hour That Disappears Overnight
Every month page tells you the evenings get shorter. October is the one where a specific night does most of the work.

Saturday the sun sets at 17:41. Sunday it sets at 16:40. Nothing astronomical happened in between: Hungarian decree 39/1996 ends summer time on the last Sunday in October, and clocks go from 03:00 back to 02:00. In 2026 that Sunday is the 25th, because the 31st is a Saturday.
Across the whole month sunset moves 1 hour 55 minutes earlier and total daylight drops 1 hour 39 minutes. Roughly half of the sunset shift happens in that one night.
Two things move with it. The Danube sightseeing boats change band on the same date: ten daytime departures a day through 24 October, four from the 25th, with the evening cruise holding at 19:00 throughout. And a Danube walk that worked as an after-dinner plan in the first week is a before-dinner plan in the last one.

Two Different Halves of One Month
The averages are real and they hide a slide, the same way September’s do.

October sits between the two steepest cooling steps in the Budapest year. On the daily maximum, September to October is a fall of 6.1 °C and October to November is 7.0 °C, the two largest month-on-month drops in the table. The month enters 6.1 °C below September and leaves 7.0 °C above November, which means a trip on the 3rd and a trip on the 29th are different holidays.
Two numbers in that table are the reason to come. 45 mm is the driest month in the whole warm half of the year, below May, June, July, August, September and November. And 2.12 m/s is the lowest mean wind speed of any month, against 2.72 in March. Still air is what makes 16 °C pleasant instead of raw, and it is what makes the walk between two outdoor thermal pools survivable in a wet swimsuit.
One number is the reason to think twice. Global radiation falls from 405.7 MJ/m² in September to 258.6 in October, down 36 percent, and October runs at 38 percent of July. Temperature is not what makes October feel like autumn here. Light is, and there is no jacket for that.
October and April are the same nights
Every guide compares October to September, which flatters it. The fairer comparison is the other side of the year.

The nights are indistinguishable. April takes the afternoon by 1.5 °C and is 9 mm drier, so on weather alone April wins and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What October has instead is on the calendar above, plus the calmest air of the year, plus water that has started to feel like the point rather than a novelty. Which Pools Are Actually Open
This is the October question nobody answers with a table, and both operators publish the answer.
Széchenyi rotates its three outdoor pools through maintenance and the windows never overlap, which is a better piece of scheduling than it gets credit for.

So, week by week: on 1 and 2 October you have the leisure and swimming pools, from 3 to 4 October all three, from 5 to 16 October the leisure and thermal pools, and from 17 October all three again. Two of three at worst, three of three for exactly half the month. The twenty indoor, thermal-area and steam-area pools and the ten saunas carry no closure at all. Palatinus is where the reputation is wrong. Margaret Island’s lido closes its outdoor half in three waves: the wave pool, strand pool, slide pool and both outdoor thermal pools on 30 August, the outdoor children’s and adventure pools on 13 September, the Margaréta pool on 27 September. Three outdoor pools carry no closing date at all, and the operator states the bath is open every day of the year from 09:00 to 19:00, with four indoor pools and three saunas running. October at Palatinus is not a shut lido. It is a working bath with a shrunken outdoor half, which is a different thing and a much cheaper crowd.
Two closures are simply permanent for now. Gellért has been shut since 1 October 2025, with the operator naming 2028 as the expected reopening. October is also where our winter argument starts working. Cold air is what makes a 38 °C outdoor pool feel like the reason you came rather than a warm bath you queued for, and 7.2 °C nights are cold enough. The winter baths guide makes the full case; October is the month it becomes true.
Who Should Not Come in October
- Anyone who wants an outdoor swim as the point of the trip. The lido season ends before October starts. Palatinus loses its wave pool, slide pool, strand pool and both outdoor thermal pools on 30 August.
- Anyone who books the last week expecting the first. Sunset moves from 18:25 to 16:30 and the daily maximum is on the steepest part of the year’s curve.
- Anyone arriving 23 to 25 October without a booking. National holiday, the first weekend of a ten-day school break, and the clocks going back, all at once.
- Anyone who wants long evenings outdoors. By 31 October it is fully dark before 17:30. This is the single largest thing April has that October does not.
- Anyone chasing the cheapest possible trip. January and February are the floor, and our cost guide says so with numbers.
The Month Either Side
Behind you: the Budapest Wine Festival, the Szabadság tér beer festival and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship are all September fixtures, and Budapest Park’s published season ends on 3 October, three days into the month. Our September guide has that calendar in full.
Ahead of you: All Saints on 1 November closes the school break, and the Christmas markets open later in November. Neither is an October trip, and stretching one into the other means a very different city.
Some October regulars are not running this year, so check before you plan around them. Budapest Design Week has published no 2026 dates. CAFe Budapest, for years the autumn festival here, is no longer programmed by Müpa, whose autumn slot Liszt Ünnep has held since 2021. The Museums’ Autumn Festival is going ahead, but its organiser has said publicly that the ministry funding was not signed and it cannot contract institutions for programmes, so the Budapest listings are thin. Do not build a trip on it.
The Verdict
October is the month to come for thermal water, concert halls and walking, and it is the wrong month to come for daylight.
The case is three numbers. It is the driest month of the warm half of the year, the calmest month of the whole year, and the nights are April’s nights. Against that, the light collapses by a third and the last week is dark before 17:30.
Two decisions matter. Decide which side of the 25th you want, because the clock change splits the month into a version with usable evenings and a version without. And book 23 to 25 October early or skip it entirely, because a national holiday, a ten-day school break and a centenary weekend at the Opera all landing together is not a coincidence you can talk your way past at the front desk.

What is the weather like in Budapest in October?
Cool days, cold nights, and less rain than most people expect. The long-term averages from the Hungarian national weather service, measured at Budapest Pestszentlőrinc over 1991 to 2020, are a mean of 11.3 °C, a mean daily maximum of 16.4 °C, a mean daily minimum of 7.2 °C and 45 mm of rain. That 45 mm is the lowest figure of any month from May through November, so the reputation October has for being wet is not supported by the measurements. What does change sharply is the light: global radiation falls 36 percent from September to October, and that is what makes the month feel like autumn rather than the temperature.
What should you pack for Budapest in October?
A proper jacket, layers underneath it, and shoes you can walk wet pavement in. Afternoons average 16.4 °C and dawn averages 7.2 °C, so the spread inside a single day is wider than the month-to-month change. The wind works in your favour here more than in any other month, which means a mid-weight coat does the job a windproof shell would need elsewhere. Bring a light rain layer for 45 mm spread across the month. If a thermal bath is on the list, pack something warm to wear between pools, because walking from one outdoor basin to the next in 7 °C air is the part people underestimate.
Is 23 October a problem for visitors to Budapest?
It is a national holiday and it changes what your day looks like, though not in the way most people assume. The baths stay open: Széchenyi treats 23 to 25 October as peak season and opens an hour early, at 08:00. Rudas is the one to watch, because it runs its weekend schedule on every public holiday, so a Friday visit planned around its long Friday timetable gets the Saturday one instead. The bigger effect is domestic demand. The Hungarian school autumn break begins that day and runs ten days, so the city fills with Hungarian families and rooms tighten. Book the 23 to 25 October weekend well ahead or plan around it.
Are the thermal baths open in Budapest in October?
Yes, and October is closer to the start of bath season than the end of it. Is October better than April in Budapest?
On weather alone April wins, narrowly, and it is worth knowing that before you book. The nights are effectively identical, 7.2 °C in October against 7.1 °C in April. April takes the afternoon by 1.5 °C and is 9 mm drier across the month. What October has that April does not is the calendar and the wind. October is the calmest month of the year here, and it carries the Liszt Ünnep festival, a centenary staging at the Opera House, an international art fair, a book fair and the city marathon inside 31 days. If the trip is built around culture and thermal water, take October. If it is built around long light evenings, take April.
