Unveiling the Mysteries: My Night on Budapest’s Vampires and Myths Tour

Get to the stone a few minutes early, because the first stretch goes straight uphill and nobody enjoys starting it at a jog. Seats are sold only in advance with online payment, so book before you head out rather than turning up hoping for a spare place.

Setting Off on a Spooky Adventure

I met our guide, Joe, at the Zero Kilometre Stone, right at the foot of the Buda Castle hill. Dressed in full gothic attire, he immediately set the mood for the evening. His dramatic flair and infectious enthusiasm hinted that we were in for a treat.

As we began our ascent up the hill, Joe regaled us with tales of medieval battles and the folklore that has shaped Hungarian history. “Did you know that Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Dracula, was once imprisoned here?” he asked, his eyes gleaming. I had no idea!

Immersed in Legends and History

Walking through the dimly lit cobblestone streets, the guide led us to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion. Along the way, we were regaled with enthralling tales of medieval battles, local folklore, and the darker chapters of Hungarian history.

One particularly chilling story was about Elizabeth Báthory, the infamous “Blood Countess,” whose gruesome deeds have become the stuff of legend. I can’t stress enough how much the guide can make or break such an experience. In our case, Joe was phenomenal. His wit, humor, and deep knowledge made the tour exceptionally entertaining.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, there were a few things to note:

• Nighttime Beauty: Seeing Budapest at night is a must-do.

Cons:

• Large Group Size: Our group was quite large, making it sometimes difficult to hear Joe, especially when street noise was high. The operator caps a group at 40, so stay near the front at each stop.
• Physical Demands: There is quite a bit of uphill walking and some stairs. Comfortable shoes are a must, and it might not be suitable for those with mobility issues.
• Price Point: At around €20 per person when I went, some might find it a bit steep for a walking tour. The adult price is still 20 euros today, and students pay 17.

Getting Back Down

The walk finishes up in the Castle District, not where it started. The bus is the easy way back to the river or across to Pest, and the guide can walk you to the stop. If you would rather stroll, the paths back down to Clark Ádám tér come with the river lit up below you, which is a decent last act.
