Renaissance Restaurant Visegrád: King Matthias's Roast Platter and a Saturday Knights' Feast
On this page
King Matthias, Hungary’s Renaissance king, kept a palace in Visegrád. It is a museum now, but along the same Fő utca the Renaissance restaurant serves a roast platter built on the king’s favorite dishes, with venison ragout soup on the menu to start and a Throne Room to eat it in.
That is the reason to book it. You spend the day on the Danube Bend, climbing to the Citadel or walking the palace courtyards, and you end it at a long table in a themed hall, or on a terrace looking across the river to Nagymaros. On Saturdays the restaurant goes further and runs its own knights’ tournament before lunch. It suits families, groups and anyone who wants the medieval theme with a real castle above it rather than a set in the city. Skip it if you want modern cooking: this is a roast-and-game kitchen, and that is the point.
The King Matthias platter for two costs 21,900 HUF (about $67), and the doors open at noon every day.

Why go: a feast in King Matthias’s town
Visegrád was a royal seat in the 14th century, and the palace that Matthias later lived in was one of medieval Europe’s great royal residences. The restaurant leans into that history completely. Its five rooms each carry a theme: the Throne Room, the Panorama Room, the Tractatorium, an old listed cellar, and the Danube Room upstairs, which opens onto a terrace in good weather. From there you look straight down at the river, across to Nagymaros and the Börzsöny hills behind it, with the Salamon Tower and Castle Hill above you and the Görgei steps next door.

It is a family business, founded “in the last millennium” as the operator puts it, and it seats 460, so it handles coach groups, weddings and company days as well as couples who walk in after the Citadel.

What you eat and what it costs
The menu is short and built around meat and game. The star is King Matthias’s Favorite Roasts, served on a platter for two, three or four. The kitchen also does a Chef’s Favorites platter for two at a lower price. If you would rather order your own plate, the mains run from whole roast trout and wild boar ragout to venison loin, goose leg, goose liver and a buffalo sirloin. For the table, start with the venison ragout soup or the pheasant broth.

| Dish | Price |
|---|---|
| King Matthias’s Favorite Roasts, for 2 | 21,900 HUF (about $67) |
| King Matthias’s Favorite Roasts, for 3 | 32,600 HUF (about $99) |
| King Matthias’s Favorite Roasts, for 4 | 43,500 HUF (about $133) |
| Chef’s Favorites platter, for 2 | 17,190 HUF (about $52) |
| Venison loin | 9,390 HUF (about $29) |
| Goose liver | 11,190 HUF (about $34) |
| Beef tenderloin | 11,990 HUF (about $37) |
| Pork knuckle | 6,850 HUF (about $21) |
| Vegan millet with vegetables, or leek risotto | 6,490 HUF (about $20) |
| Venison ragout soup | 3,190 HUF (about $10) |
| Pheasant soup | 3,290 HUF (about $10) |
| Beef goulash soup | 2,900 HUF (about $9) |
| Ice cream sundae, cheesecake or chestnut cream | 2,350-2,420 HUF (about $7) |
The platters bring the price down: the platter for four works out at under 11,000 HUF a head. The millet with vegetables is the main marked vegan, there is a leek risotto at the same price, and dessert includes a lactose- and gluten-free forest fruit slice.
The website does not mention a service charge, so look at the bill before you add a tip. Our guide to tipping in Hungary explains how it works.
Prices are in HUF, which is what you pay on the bill. Converted at 1 USD = 328 HUF, the ECB rate on 23 October 2026. Rates move, so treat the dollar figures as indicative.

The Saturday knights’ tournament and royal feast
If you can be in Visegrád on a Saturday, this is the version to book. The restaurant organizes a half-day program around lunch, performed by the knights of the Order of Saint George:
- 12:00: a history talk, with the meeting point at the entrance to the Salamon Tower.
- 12:30: a knights’ tournament show, showing how knights fought for the favor of the king and queen in 14th-century Visegrád, with a glass of white wine or apple juice.
- 13:30: the royal feast in the restaurant: creamy venison ragout soup with tarragon and onion potato dumplings; then whole-roasted turkey leg, honey pork ribs and panko chicken breast with roast potato slices, chive mayonnaise, a honey-smoky sauce and braised cabbage with apple; then an ice cream sundae.

It costs 14,500 HUF (about $44) from age 14, 7,250 HUF (about $22) for children aged 3 to 14, and under-3s go free. Drinks with the feast are not included: you order and pay for them at the table. Tickets are sold on the restaurant’s website, and the booking calendar lists Saturdays up to 19 December 2026.
One thing to check when you book: the Salamon Tower itself has been closed since 1 September 2026, with reopening expected in spring 2027, and in winter the operator moves the tournament indoors to the Palotaház attraction house, by the big car park opposite the MOL petrol station. Confirm the meeting point before you set off.
Bigger groups can book the tournament as a private program, and the restaurant also offers set feast menus for groups, such as King Matthias’s or King Sigismund’s feast platter, with an optional drinks package of unlimited wine and soft drinks, an aperitif and coffee. Group prices are given on request.

What else is in Visegrád
Make a day of it before you eat. The Royal Palace, King Matthias’s residence, has a restored ceremonial courtyard, exhibition halls and a loggia; it is open Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry 16:45), closed on Mondays, and a ticket is 2,200 HUF (about $7) for ages 26 to 62 and 1,100 HUF for ages 6 to 26. High above town, the Citadel gives you the classic view of the Danube Bend; our castles of Hungary guide has its hours and ticket price. For a hot soak after the climb, Lepence Spa is just south of town. To pair Visegrád with Szentendre or Esztergom, see our Danube Bend day trip guide.

Getting there from Budapest
- Bus: Volánbusz runs the 880-889 Budapest-Szentendre-Visegrád-Esztergom lines along the river road. Our Danube Bend guide has the departure stop, journey time and fare.
- Train and ferry: take the train from Nyugati to Nagymaros-Visegrád on the opposite bank, then the small ferry across the river. The ferry is run by Atlantis Visegrád Club Kft. (+36 26 398 344); check its timetable before you build an evening around it, because missing the last crossing back is the classic way to strand yourself in Nagymaros.
- Boat: MAHART boats from Budapest to Visegrád are a warm-season option: in 2026 the regular boat was timetabled Thursday to Sunday from 22 June to 30 August, and the hydrofoil on a few weekends between May and September. Low water on the Danube stopped all Danube Bend sailings from 13 July to 31 October 2026, and the timetables list no sailings after that.
If you come by car, parking is free by the palace, at the big car park next to the Palotaház, on Fő utca and at the Salamon Tower.

Staying in Budapest instead?
If you cannot make it up the river, Budapest has two medieval dinners of its own. Sir Lancelot, near Nyugati station, is the knights’ restaurant where the house rule is no forks. Apostolok on Kígyó utca runs a King Matthias dinner show with fire-breathers and jesters every night. Our medieval dinner guide puts them side by side.
The verdict
Book the Renaissance restaurant as the last stop of a Danube Bend day: palace or Citadel in the morning, a platter of roasts in the afternoon, and the river outside the window. Order the King Matthias platter for the table, ask for the terrace if the weather is good, and if you can come on a Saturday, take the tournament and feast package, which gives you the show and lunch for 14,500 HUF a head.
