Budapest’s best hostels sit in Pest, in districts V, VI, VII and IX, and the useful split is by type: social hostels such as Wombat’s and Maverick Central Market for meeting people, The Hive for nights out, and MEININGER, Pal’s or Maverick Downtown for sleep or a private room. Dorm beds start from 10 EUR a night at MEININGER Great Market Hall, most others price by date, and if you are arriving alone in winter or the off-season, the social hostels keep their programs going, so you will not eat dinner alone unless you want to.

How the scene splits

Budapest has two hostel economies sharing the same few streets. One sells nights out: pub crawls, boat parties, a bar that stays open late. The other sells a social life without the hangover: dinners, game nights, walking tours, and dorms where the lights go off at a sensible hour. A party hostel two streets from a quiet one is still a party hostel, so choose the type, then the address.

Older hostel lists still recommend Grandio and Retox. Budapest Party Hostels, which ran both, says neither made it through Covid.

Social hostels for solo travelers

Wombat’s City Hostel Budapest

What it is: A big, polished hostel in a residential building from 1840 on Király utca, which by its own description is the biggest hostel in town, set in a former 4-star hotel. Every room, dorms included, has its own shower, toilet and air conditioning.

Why it works alone: Wombat’s has two dorm types aimed squarely at solo travelers. The Social Dorms come with a free welcome drink and a crowd that wants to meet people; the Quiet Dorms come with free earplugs and roommates who want to sleep. Female-only dorms and en-suite private doubles complete the range. The trade-off: reservations are capped at 10 nights within any 30-day period, and breakfast costs extra.

Insider tip: Book the dorm type, not just a bed. The Social and Quiet Dorms are separate categories on the hostel’s own booking page, and both have a minimum age of 18.

The facts: Király utca 20, 1061 Budapest (District VI). Minimum age 18 (Wombat’s notes that age policies can vary by season, so check when you book); younger guests stay with a legal guardian in a private room. Guest kitchen, security lockers in every room, 24-hour reception, check-in from 14:00, check-out 10:00, late check-out to 13:00 on request. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Maverick Central Market

What it is: A boutique social hostel a few steps from the Great Market Hall, with its own pub, games and a calendar of events shared with Maverick’s other Budapest hostels.

Why it works alone: Dorm beds sit in custom-built sleeping compartments with a curtain, a reading light and their own sockets, so you can be sociable downstairs and private in bed. The events are the draw: fröccs nights, taco nights, beer pong, Thursday morning yoga and free walking tours. The weakness is distance from the bar district: the hostel puts Keleti station 20 minutes away.

Insider tip: Open the shared Maverick events calendar before you book your first night and land on an event evening.

The facts: Lónyay utca 31, 1093 Budapest (District IX). 4-, 6- and 8-bed mixed dorms, 6- and 8-bed female dorms, single and twin rooms with their own bathroom, en-suite doubles. Shared kitchen, free luggage storage, large built-in lockers in the dorms, 24-hour front desk, entire building non-smoking. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Source: Maverick Central Market, read on 1 November 2026.

Vitae Hostel

What it is: The calmer of Budapest Party Hostels’ two remaining properties: party infrastructure, family atmosphere.

Why it works alone: There is a family dinner every night, which solves the first-evening problem better than any common room. A party option runs every night of the week if you want it, and the large common areas host movie nights if you do not.

The facts: Erzsébet körút 50, 4th floor, on the Grand Boulevard (District VII). Non-smoking, secure dorms. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Source: Vitae Hostel and the address on its booking engine, read on 1 November 2026.

Maverick Athenaeum

What it is: Maverick’s biggest Budapest hostel to date, in a historic building on Rákóczi út crowned by a statue of Pallas Athene.

Why it works alone: Size means a busy lobby. Maverick holds Monday game nights here, and yoga in the lobby every Saturday at 12:30 through the autumn and winter season. Its weakness: every dorm shares bathrooms except the 6-bed female ensuite dorm, so if your own bathroom matters, book the 6-bed female ensuite dorm or a private room.

The facts: Rákóczi út 54, 1074 Budapest (District VII), about 5 minutes from Keleti station by the hostel’s estimate. Mixed dorms of 4 to 10 beds and female dorms of 4 to 9 beds, with sleeping pods and free large lockers; all private rooms (doubles, triples, quads) are en-suite. Shared kitchen. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Party hostels

The Hive Party Hostel

What it is: A 304-bed hostel on Dob utca that calls itself seriously dedicated to party, and means it.

Why it works: The program is the product. The guests-only rooftop bar on the third floor opens every day from 14:00, the hostel’s own pub crawl leaves on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 20:00, and the Danube boat party sails on Friday and Saturday, with a start time that moves by season, so check the program page. If you came to sleep, this is the wrong building, and the hostel says so itself: everyone here is here to party.

Insider tip: Female dorms (4 to 10 beds) and private dorms for groups of 4 to 8 come with their own bathroom, so a group of friends can join the party and still lock its own door.

The facts: Dob utca 19, 1074 Budapest (District VII). Strictly 18 and over. Mixed dorms of 6 to 16 beds, most with en-suite bathrooms, double private rooms, private lockers, shared kitchen, 24-hour reception. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Not staying at a party hostel but want the night out? Pub crawls are sold separately too:

Quiet hostels

Pal’s Hostel

What it is: Not one building but a set of apartments around St. Stephen’s Basilica, with a shared reception and lobby in the middle and a balcony facing the Basilica.

Why it works: The apartment layout keeps the noise of a big hostel out of your room. Every unit has free Wi-Fi and access to a fully equipped kitchen, and the range runs from 4-bed mixed dorms to private rooms for one to four people, en-suite rooms and whole apartments for up to 12. The weakness: there is no social program to speak of, and your room sits in one of the surrounding apartments rather than above reception. In Advent the Advent Bazilika Christmas market sets up on the same square.

The facts: Szent István tér 3, 1051 Budapest (District V). Group rates from 10 people. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Source: Pal’s Hostel, read on 1 November 2026; Advent Bazilika lists its 2026 market from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027.

MEININGER Budapest Great Market Hall

What it is: A hotel-hostel hybrid next to the Great Market Hall, with private rooms, family rooms and dorms under one roof.

Why it works: Dorms top out at six beds and every one is en-suite, with towels, linen and air conditioning included, which makes it the quiet pick for a solo traveler on a budget. There is a guest kitchen, a bar, a lounge and a game zone. It feels more hotel than hostel, which is the point and the weakness.

Insider tip: Private-room guests can keep the room until 14:00 for 15 EUR more.

The facts: Csarnok tér 2, 1093 Budapest (District IX). Female and mixed dorm beds from 10 EUR a night, minimum age 18. Twin room from 51 EUR a night. Check-in from 15:00, check-out 11:00. No hotel parking.

Source: MEININGER Budapest Great Market Hall, prices read on 1 November 2026.

Wombat’s Quiet Dorms, above, are the third quiet option: same building as the WomBAR, earplugs included.

Private rooms for couples

Maverick Downtown

What it is: Maverick’s “heritage hideout”, inside a grand Habsburg-era mansion on Ferenciek tere, a short walk from the river.

Why it works for two: There are no dorms, only private rooms: en-suite doubles, plus private 4- and 6-bed rooms for small groups. You still get hostel perks such as a shared kitchen and Maverick’s social events. The weakness: breakfast is served at the Noble restaurant a few minutes’ walk away, for 15 EUR a person, daily 7:00-11:00.

Insider tip: The Budget Double Room looks onto the less bright but calm inner courtyard. For a light sleeper, that beats a street view.

The facts: Ferenciek tere 2, 1053 Budapest (District V). Check-in from 15:00, check-out until 11:00, 24-hour reception, free luggage storage, entire building non-smoking. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Source: Maverick Downtown and its guest information, read on 1 November 2026.

JO&JOE Budapest

What it is: A design hostel with 91 rooms on Dohány utca, a bar on the first floor and another on the rooftop.

Why it works for two: The private rooms sleep up to two with an en-suite bathroom, and the themed “atypical” rooms (one inspired by a famous colorful cube from the 1980s, one by the thermal baths) make a stay feel less generic. Weekly events give you somewhere to be without leaving the building: open-mic comedy every Tuesday and live music on the rooftop every Friday, both 20:00-22:00. The weakness: dorms of 4 to 8 share bathrooms, and the cooking offer is a “Snack & chill corner” for light snacks.

Insider tip: Pets can stay for 20 EUR, private rooms only.

The facts: Dohány utca 35, 1074 Budapest (District VII). Staff on site 24/7, a secure locker for every guest. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Source: JO&JOE Budapest, read on 1 November 2026.

Maverick Budapest Soho

What it is: The Maverick group’s boutique hostel on Kazinczy utca.

Why it works: It splits the difference. Couples get en-suite doubles and twins on the second and third floors, and solo women get female dorms on a separate floor, all with sleeping pods and built-in lockers. Free walking tours and a pub crawl are on the facilities list. The weakness is the street: Kazinczy utca is the heart of the bar district, so a light sleeper should ask for a quieter room.

The facts: Kazinczy utca 24-26, 1075 Budapest (District VII). Shared kitchen, free tea and coffee, free luggage storage, 24-hour front desk, entire building non-smoking. Prices: check the hostel’s site.

Source: Maverick Budapest Soho, read on 1 November 2026.

a&o Budapest City

What it is: The Budapest house of the German budget chain, a modern hotel and hostel between Nyugati and Keleti stations, near Oktogon.

Why it works: Single, twin, three-bed and family rooms alongside dorms, a guest kitchen, a laundry room, a bar and table soccer. It is chain-standard rather than characterful, and the chain markets it to school classes as well as backpackers, so expect groups.

The facts: Csengery utca 11, 1074 Budapest (District VII). Dogs allowed in rooms, for a fee. Prices: check the hostel’s site; the headline “from” prices on the chain’s pages are the same for every city.

Alone in Budapest in winter or the off-season: are hostels still social?

Yes, as long as you pick one that runs a program rather than one that only rents beds. The social hostels keep a busy schedule outside the summer peak:

  • Maverick (Soho, Central Market, Athenaeum): its events calendar lists game nights, quiz nights, a Friday bingo night, Thursday yoga at Central Market and yoga at Athenaeum every Saturday in the autumn and winter season.
  • The Hive: programs run year-round: pub crawl on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 20:00, boat party on Friday and Saturday (the start time moves by season, so check the program page), rooftop bar daily from 14:00.
  • Vitae: a family dinner every night.
  • JO&JOE: open-mic comedy every Tuesday, live music every Friday.

Three moves make the first night easier. Book a small dorm (four to six beds) in a social hostel, not a 16-bed room in a party one, so the people you meet are the people you sleep near. Arrive on an evening with a fixed event, a family dinner or a game night, because a scheduled table is easier to join than a crowded bar. And plan your days around the season: in Advent the big Christmas markets are open, and a free walking tour is a ready-made group for the morning. Our solo travel guide covers budgets and safety for the rest of the trip.

Getting to your hostel

From the airport: the 100E Airport Express runs around the clock to Deák Ferenc tér via Kálvin tér, in about 40 minutes. It takes only its own 2,500 HUF ticket (about $7.60), which you can buy and validate on board with a bank card, or a 1,000 HUF add-on if you hold a valid Budapest pass (not the 15-day one). Kálvin tér is the nearest stop for the two Great Market Hall hostels; Deák Ferenc tér is the stop for Districts V, VI and VII. The full comparison with taxis and the 200E bus is in our airport to city center guide.

From the train stations: Maverick Athenaeum is the closest pick to Keleti. For every other route, our Budapest railway stations guide explains which metro line leaves from Keleti, Nyugati and Déli.

Getting around: a single ticket costs 500 HUF (about $1.50) and a 72-hour travelcard 5,750 HUF (about $17.50). If you stay three days and ride more than a handful of times, the travelcard wins.

Transport fares are in HUF, which is what you pay. Converted at 1 USD = 328 HUF, the ECB rate on 30 October 2026. Hostel prices are in euros as the hostels publish them; at the same day’s rate, 1 EUR = 1.12 USD, so 10 EUR is about $11 and 51 EUR about $57. Rates move, so treat the converted figures as indicative. When you compare hostels, check whether the rate shown includes the local tourist tax.

Good to know

Are Budapest hostels still social in winter?

Yes, at the hostels that run a program. Maverick runs game, quiz and bingo nights and holds yoga every Saturday in the autumn and winter season, The Hive runs its programs year-round, including the pub crawl four nights a week and a Friday and Saturday boat party whose start time moves by season, Vitae serves a family dinner every night, and JO&JOE hosts an open-mic comedy night every Tuesday and live music every Friday.

Which Budapest hostels have female-only dorms?

Wombat's, The Hive, MEININGER Great Market Hall, Maverick Central Market and Maverick Athenaeum all sell female-only dorm beds, and Maverick Budapest Soho puts its female dorms on a separate floor. Book the female dorm category directly; it is a separate room type on each hostel's booking page.

Do Budapest hostels have age limits?

The rules the hostels publish are minimum ages. The Hive takes guests aged 18 and over only, Wombat's sets a minimum age of 18 and notes that age policies can vary by season (younger guests stay with a legal guardian in a private room), and MEININGER's dorm beds are for guests aged 18 and over. Check the booking conditions of any other hostel before you pay.

How much does a hostel bed cost in Budapest?

MEININGER Great Market Hall publishes the clearest floor: dorm beds from 10 EUR and twin rooms from 51 EUR a night on its own site. Most other hostels price by date and occupancy, so the live rate on the hostel's own booking page is the figure to trust.

Which Budapest hostel is best for couples?

Maverick Downtown, because it has private rooms only, in a Habsburg-era mansion on Ferenciek tere. JO&JOE on Dohány utca has en-suite private rooms for two and a rooftop bar, and every Wombat's private room has its own bathroom.

Are Grandio and Retox party hostels still open?

No. Budapest Party Hostels, the group that ran them, states that neither Grandio nor Retox made it through Covid. The group now runs two hostels, Vitae among them.
