Budapest Walking Tour: Free vs Paid, Times, Tips and a Self-Guided Route

At 10:30 every morning a guide with a blue FREE TOUR flag waits by the fountain on Erzsébet tér, and the two hours that follow cost whatever you decide at the end. Absolute Tours’ paid small-group walks start at 61 €, and the gap between the two buys less than most people expect: a smaller group, sometimes a drink, and on the Castle walk, a door that opens.

This page sets out where each free Budapest walking tour meets and when, now that the autumn timetable has moved the afternoon departures to 14:30. It covers what a fair tip looks like in forint, which paid tours are worth it and why, the two walking tours the Budapest Card gives you for nothing, and a self-guided route with distances you can follow on a phone map. If you only read one thing: book the 10:30, tip at the operator’s suggested band, and buy synagogue and church tickets separately.

TripToBudapest is on its autumn timetable. Go Zeppelin offers morning and afternoon slots that you pick when you book, without publishing exact times. The Budapest Card tours run on fixed days.

There is no free evening walk on any of these timetables. The last scheduled free departure of the day is 15:30 on Mondays and Fridays and 14:30 on the other days.

TripToBudapest: Five Free Tours, Three Meeting Points

TripToBudapest, run by Walking Tours Kft., has been going since 2007 and says its guides are local and licensed. Its guides wait with a blue FREE TOUR flag or blue umbrellas. The regular free tours are in English; Spanish, Italian, French, Russian and Bulgarian are available as private tours at set prices.

The Erzsébet tér spot is in the park by the Danubius fountain, 10 to 15 m from the Ferris wheel; the operator warns that Google Maps does not always pin it exactly, so aim for the wheel. The Castle tour is the one it does not recommend for wheelchairs and calls difficult with a stroller, because of the climb at the start. The others are mostly flat, with some cobbles and curbs.

The Communism tour is two departures a week, and the operator itself describes it as more of a street lecture than a monument trail, since most communist-era statues left the center after 1989. For the statues themselves, Memento Park is where many of them ended up.

Go Zeppelin: The SANDEMANs Partner

Go Zeppelin Tours calls itself the official partner of SANDEMANs Tours in Budapest. Its main site is in Spanish, and each free tour also runs in English.

Two things to know. First, the Jewish Quarter tour meets on the same corner of Erzsébet tér as TripToBudapest, also under a blue flag, so check the name on your booking before you fall in behind someone. Second, Spanish-language bookings of the general tour can meet at Kossuth Lajos tér 10, in front of Café Szamos by the M2 entrance, so go where your confirmation says.

Every Go Zeppelin tour needs at least 10 people to run and caps the group at 40. Cancellation is free, and the walk enters no buildings or museums.

What to Tip, in Forint

Guides on these tours are paid by the tip, so the number matters to them. As guidance, here is TripToBudapest’s own scale, converted at the ECB reference rate.

Its FAQ puts the common range at about 10 to 20 € a head and says tipping is voluntary. Go Zeppelin sets no floor and no ceiling and says some people leave 5 € and others 50 €. Most guests pay in cash, in forint or euro; some guides can take a payment link or QR code, depending on the guide and the day.

The Small Print That Decides Whether Your Tour Runs

Free does not mean unconditional. These are the operators’ own rules.

• TripToBudapest needs 5 people. If fewer than 5 are there at the start, the tour becomes private at a flat 80 €, split between those present: 40 € each for two, 27 € each for three, 20 € each for four, paid in cash before you set off. In a quiet November week that is the line to know.
• Go Zeppelin needs 10 people and caps the group at 40.
• Groups pay a floor. TripToBudapest asks groups of 8 or more to get in touch at least 24 hours ahead and charges at least 8 € each (about 2,940 Ft). Go Zeppelin applies its floor from 6 people: 8 € or 3,500 Ft each, paid at the start, even if you booked under separate names.
• Booking. Go Zeppelin requires an online reservation. At TripToBudapest booked guests have priority when a group is full, so book either way; it costs nothing.
• Group size. TripToBudapest aims for about 20 on the Budapest Tour and splits into two groups with two guides at 36. Its Jewish District groups do not go above 20.
• Lateness. Go Zeppelin gives your spot away at five minutes late without notice. TripToBudapest suggests a later departure if you are more than 15 minutes late.
• No recording. TripToBudapest does not allow audio or video recording of the guide’s commentary. Photos are fine.

Paid Walking Tours, and What They Add

The established English small-group operator is Absolute Tours. Its prices have gone up since summer, and the Castle walk now includes an entry ticket.

What the extra money gets you depends on the tour:

• The Castle walk is the one that takes you inside: the guide goes into Matthias Church with you, including the upper gallery. On your own, the Matthias Church adult ticket is 3,400 Ft. So the free Castle tour, tipped at 15 €, plus your own church ticket comes to about 8,900 Ft, against 22,380 Ft for the paid walk.
• Hammer & Sickle includes a refreshment stop with a drink and public transport tickets during the tour, and covers everyday life under communism and the 1956 uprising in one walk. It does not go inside churches or buildings.
• The Alternative tour includes a visit to a contemporary artist’s studio and gallery, and ends at a small cultural venue or café.
• The All in One includes coffee and strudel and a ride on the Millennium Underground to Heroes’ Square, and peeks into a spa.

The rest of what you pay for is a smaller group with a licensed guide you can hear. Booking runs through FareHarbor, so read the cancellation terms before you pay.

The Budapest Card Tours

If you already hold a Budapest Card, two guided walks cost you nothing, not even a tip line in the budget. BKK’s 2026/2027 partner list shows both as free.

No registration: go to the meeting point and show the card. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays you can do both. On the 72-hour FLEXI card, a walking tour in Pest or Buda is one of the seven programs you choose five from, so it uses up a slot.

The Jewish Quarter Tour Stops at the Door

Both free Jewish Quarter tours stay outside the synagogues. TripToBudapest states that entry to synagogues or museums is not included, and Go Zeppelin enters no buildings at all. The fix is to buy the Dohány ticket as a second, separate stop, which also gets you a guided tour inside at no extra cost.

Last entry is an hour before closing. Men cover their heads (a kippah is handed out), and sleeveless tops, shorts and short skirts are refused at the door. Tickets bought online get faster admission. A Self-Guided Pest Walk, Stop by Stop

No group, no tip, no start time. This loop follows roughly the same ground as the free Budapest Tour, in an order you can drop straight into a phone map. Distances and times are walking routes measured on OpenStreetMap at an even pace; add your own stops.

That is about 3.2 km and 43 minutes of walking. With time to look around, two hours is comfortable. The Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial is the stop to slow down for, and the Parliament tour is a separate ticket that sells out, so book it if you want the inside.

To add Buda, cross the Chain Bridge from stop 6 to Clark Ádám tér (about 640 m, 9 minutes), then walk up to Matthias Church on Szentháromság tér (about 720 m on the map, uphill, so allow more than the 10 minutes routing gives). The Castle Funicular from Clark Ádám tér also goes up.

For a shorter river walk, our Danube Promenade route is 1.5 km with five stops; the Jewish Quarter walk is 2 km and ten stops; and the tiny statues hunt is a 3 km scavenger route across the city. Andrássy Avenue makes a good straight-line walk on a different day.

Which Tour Suits Whom

• First day in the city: the TripToBudapest Free Budapest Tour at 10:30. It ends at the Parliament with recommendations for the rest of your stay, which is the point of doing it early.
• Budapest Card holders: the free Pest walk at 10:00 and the Buda walk at 14:00, both on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
• Families with young children: TripToBudapest says its tours work best for children over about 12. The self-guided loop lets you stop for ice cream when you need to.
• Wheelchair or stroller: the Pest-side tours are mostly flat. Skip the free Castle tour, which starts with a stair climb, and take the funicular or the Castle Bus up instead.
• Communism and 1956: the free tour on Tuesday or Saturday at 14:30; any other day, Hammer & Sickle at 66 €. For the same era underground, the Csepel bunker actually takes you inside.
• Architecture fans: the free Art Nouveau tour, Mondays and Fridays at 15:30, March to December.
• Want to go inside Matthias Church with a guide: Absolute’s Castle walk at 61 €. Want the inside of Dohány with a guide: buy the synagogue ticket, the guided tour comes with it.
• Groups of six or more: expect a per-person floor or a private tour. Ask for a private quote first.
• Spanish speakers: Go Zeppelin, which runs every free tour in Spanish.

Licensed Guides and the 22:00 Rule

Walking a group around Budapest is a regulated job. The license, the idegenvezetői igazolvány, is mandatory. It requires a tour-guide qualification plus a language certificate for the language guided in, costs 10,000 Ft in procedure fees, and Budapest Főváros Kormányhivatala enters the guide in the register, which MKEH publishes. So “our guides are licensed” is something you can check.

In Erzsébetváros, the Jewish Quarter and Gozsdu, the municipal decree on public space use, 6/2017 (II. 17.) § 10 (1) r), exempts guiding from needing a permit only when all three conditions hold:

Miss any one and the tour needs a permit, so a guided walk of the ruin-bar streets after 22:00 needs one. If you are staying in the district, the District VII accommodation guide covers which streets are loud at 2am, and the kosher and Jewish food guide handles lunch.

Free Is a Pricing Model

On marketplace platforms the platform takes a cut before the guide is paid. GuruWalk publishes its own arithmetic: it recommends at least 15 € per person, and its commission is about 2 to 4 € per traveler. TripToBudapest and Go Zeppelin take bookings on their own sites, so that cut does not describe them. Either way, “free” means the price is set at the end, by you.

The Walks Hungarians Book

Hosszúlépés. Járunk?, run by Városi Séta Kft., sells themed urban walks to locals at 8,390 Ft (about $25). Recent dates have included the former Lipótmező asylum, the 150-year-old Grand Hotel on Margaret Island, the Astoria hotel, Terminal 1 at the old Ferihegy airport and Gerbeaud. They are in Hungarian. If you speak it, or travel with someone who does, these are the walks that go behind doors the tourist tours walk past.

The Verdict

The 10:30 on Erzsébet tér is still the best free Budapest walking tour to start with: two hours, a licensed guide, and a tip of around 15 € that you set yourself. Book it, check that the group will reach the minimum, and dress for standing still in November.

Pay when the paid tour gives you something specific: Absolute’s Castle walk if you want Matthias Church explained from the inside, Hammer & Sickle if you cannot make a Tuesday or Saturday. Hold a Budapest Card and the Pest and Buda walks are already paid for. And for the Jewish Quarter, the best guided hour is the free one that comes with the 14,500 Ft Dohány ticket, any day but Saturday.
