This is a guide, not a recommendation. Budapest has licensed casinos, people ask about them, and the practical facts are harder to find than they should be, so here they are, with no venue being pushed at you. Gambling in Hungary is 18+ by law. The operator’s own version of the rule is the clearest one going: you may walk in from 00:01 on your eighteenth birthday, and not a minute earlier.
Start with the count, because it is the thing most pages get wrong. If you have read a list of ten casinos in Budapest, most of those entries are not casinos. Hungarian law caps Budapest and Pest county at five casinos combined, the regulator’s public register carries exactly five permits for the city, and every one of them belongs to the same company.

Five Permits, One Company, and a Legal Ceiling of Five
The Regulated Activities Supervisory Authority, SZTFH, publishes a public register of every gambling permit in Hungary. Its casino tab lists nine rows nationally. Five of them are in Budapest, and all five sit with LVC Diamond Játékkaszinó Üzemeltető Kft., registered at Rákóczi út 1-3 in District VIII.
That is not an accident of the market. The regulator’s own casino page states the rule: one casino per 500,000 residents, with a maximum of five for the capital and Pest county together. The ceiling is five, and the five slots are full.
Which means the usual question, which Budapest casino is best, has an unsatisfying answer. They are five rooms run by one company under one set of house rules, one game menu and one registration system. Choose on location and on floor size, not on some imagined difference in the odds.
The Four Rooms You Can Walk Into
All four trade under the Las Vegas Casino name and all four sit on the same permit family, valid to 2056.

Corvin Sétány is the biggest floor at 1,200 m² and the most slots. EuroCenter has the most live tables despite being the smallest room at 635 m², which tells you where its priorities are, and its first two hours of parking on level 1 are free. Tropicana is the central one, a few minutes from Vörösmarty tér, and the door is on Vigadó utca rather than the Dorottya utca address, which trips people up on a first visit. Atlantis is out in District XIV, 890 m², and is the one venue that publishes no live-table window.
Corvin Sétány is named after the quarter, not after a street called Corvin sétány, and it is a good ten minutes’ walk from the Palace Quarter’s nicer end. The game menu is identical across all four: American roulette, blackjack, punto banco and Ultimate Texas Hold’em. EuroCenter adds plain poker to that list. There is no craps at any Budapest venue, and punto banco is the baccarat. Slot cabinets come from Novomatic, EGT, Amatic, Merkur, Ainsworth Ambassador, APEX and IGT.
The Door Is the Hard Part
This is the section worth reading twice. Getting into a Budapest casino is not the Vegas routine of flashing an ID and being waved through. You are entered into a system before you see a table.
Which Document Works, and Which One Will Not

Three things catch foreign visitors, and all three come straight off the operator’s own list. A driving licence is not identification here unless you are Hungarian and carrying an address card alongside it, so a US, UK, Canadian or Australian licence will not get you in. Non-EEA means the passport itself, not a photo of it on your phone and not a residence card issued by some third country. And the rule is applied at the entrance, on the night, by someone who is not going to make an exception: reviewers describe being turned away on a first attempt and coming back the next day with the right document.
Registration, and the Photograph
On a first visit, registration is compulsory and takes a few minutes. You give your personal details, then a photograph is taken of you and of your documents, and you are issued your own entry card. Reviews describe the form being completed on a tablet and the questions going further than expected, into home address and mother’s maiden name territory. Once the card exists, later visits are quick.
Security is airport-shaped, and that surprises people more than the paperwork does. Bags are checked, jackets get opened, and food or drink brought in from outside does not come in with you. Whether that reads as unfriendly or as a properly run room seems to depend entirely on what you walked in expecting.
Cloakroom, Dress and the Camera Ban
The cloakroom is free and using it is compulsory. Large bags and backpacks have to be left there before you go in, so plan for that if you are arriving with luggage.
On clothing, the operator’s position is that there is no strict dress code and that no great fortune, dinner jacket or cocktail dress is required. What it does refuse is swimwear, vest tops and work clothes. In a city where a perfectly normal day ends with walking out of a thermal bath, that is the realistic risk, not being under-dressed for some imagined black-tie room.
Photography and audio recording are banned across the whole premises. Phones are not allowed at the live tables, though the slot floor is more relaxed about them. The casino photo that a Vegas-trained instinct assumes is available is not available here.
The Building Is Open All Night. The Tables Are Not.
All four venues are open 365 days a year, around the clock. The dealers are not.
Live play at Corvin Sétány, Tropicana and EuroCenter runs 12:00 to 04:00. Outside that window the room is still open and the slots are still running, but the tables are dark. Arrive at nine in the morning expecting roulette and you have found a very quiet slot hall.
That is also the real shape of these rooms on any night. The floors are dominated by regular slot players rather than by visitors, the live tables are a minority of the space, and nobody who has been describes it as a Budapest thing to do. It is a working local gambling room that tourists occasionally walk into.
What You Can Pay With
Entry costs nothing, and the operator publishes no minimum bets, saying only that they vary by venue and by table. Anyone quoting you a figure for that is guessing.

Two of those rows are worth more than they look. A card transaction at a casino cashier here is booked as a purchase, not a cash advance, so your own bank should not hit you with a cash-advance fee. And the cashier is not an ATM: it sells chips and tickets for play, and it does not hand cash across the counter.
The phone-wallet rule is the one that will actually ruin an evening. Apple Pay, Google Pay and any card that lives only inside your handset are refused. Bring the physical card, in your own name.
You can also play in euros at some venues. Tropicana and Corvin Sétány both publish that all live games run in forint and in euro, with selected Amatic and EGT machines taking both. That is unusual for Hungary and it means you may not need to change money at all, though the currency exchange guide is still the right read before you hand cash to anyone in this city.

The first row explains something a returning visitor notices immediately. The neon játékterem storefronts that filled Budapest side streets in the 2000s are not there any more, and they did not quietly go out of business. The 2012 amendment to the gambling act moved slot machines inside licensed casinos only, and the arcade permits lapsed. A small street-level room advertising itself as a casino today is either a licensed poker room or it is not licensed for slots at all. Poker Rooms Are a Different Licence
The register has a second tab, kártyaterem, and four of its Budapest entries are poker rooms rather than casinos, on an entirely separate permit series.

These are card rooms. They are not casinos, they are not part of the five, and they cannot legally run slot machines. If a list of Budapest casinos runs past five entries, this is usually where the extra names come from.
How to Check a Venue Yourself
This takes about ninety seconds and it is the only verification that counts. SZTFH publishes its permits at sztfh.hu, under the public register of authorisations. Open the Játékkaszinó tab for casinos or Kártyaterem for poker rooms, and look for the venue name, the operating company, the licence number and the expiry date. If a place is not on that list, it is not licensed, whatever the sign outside says.
No affiliate site will ever tell you to do this, because it costs them the click. It is still the right first move.
Playing Safely, and the 18 Rule
Gambling in Hungary is restricted to adults by statute, and the operator’s phrasing is the one to remember: from 00:01 on your eighteenth birthday, and not before. The document check at the door is how that gets enforced, which is another reason the passport rule is not negotiable.
If you want limits, they exist and they are run by the regulator rather than by the venue:

- The player-protection helpline is +36 80 205 352, published by the regulator as free and available around the clock.
- ezcsakjatek.hu is the self-exclusion route the operator itself links from its own footer.
- Formal self-exclusion has existed since 1 January 2016. You can file a self-restriction declaration with the authority, which maintains a player-protection register, and every licensed operator has to refuse entry to a registered person for the declared period.
The operator’s own required warning is worth repeating in plain English: gambling taken to excess is harmful and can cause addiction.
The Verdict
An evening in a Budapest casino is a specific, narrow thing, and it is not the city’s headline act. Four rooms, one company, a fixed game menu, a serious door and a floor that belongs to regulars. If that appeals, go with your passport, go after midday if you want a dealer, wear something you would wear to dinner, and leave the phone in your pocket.
If it does not appeal, the good news is that Budapest’s night is enormous everywhere else. Start with the ruin bars and work outwards.
