On 15 March Hungary remembers the revolution of 1848, and the countryside celebrates it at least as seriously as Budapest. Every town raises the flag, lays wreaths at its Petőfi or Kossuth statue and pins a red, white and green cockade on its coat. Some go much further: torch processions the evening before, mounted hussars, folk dance on the main square and free entry to open-air museums.
This page is the countryside guide, grouped by region, with what each town did last year and how to get there from Budapest. Our public holidays guide covers what the holiday means for shops and transport. For the capital itself, see 15 March in Budapest.
For the rest of the Hungarian year, from carnival to Christmas, see our calendar of Hungarian holidays and traditions.

What 15 March Is About
On 15 March 1848 a group of young radicals in Pest, the “March Youth”, printed their Twelve Points and Petőfi’s National Song without the censor’s permission, and the city rose with them. That evening the crowd poured into the National Theatre, where Katona’s Bánk bán was playing; the audience voted for patriotic songs and recitations instead of the play, and Petőfi, Jókai and Vasvári spoke from the boxes. The revolution became a war of independence that was crushed in 1849, and the day became the national holiday.
Outside Budapest the holiday is less about crowds and politics and more about the towns’ own 1848 stories: the church in Debrecen where the Declaration of Independence was read, the house in Kiskőrös where Petőfi was born, the balcony in Szeged where Kossuth spoke. That is the reason to leave the capital for the day.

15 March 2027 Falls on a Monday
Monday 15 March 2027 is a public holiday, so the weekend before turns it into three days off: Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March. The Labor Code does not let retailers roster staff on a public holiday, so chain supermarkets and mall shops close on the Monday, while restaurants, cafés and petrol-station shops can open. Saturday is an ordinary shopping day.
Watch the Monday closures. Many museums close every Monday. The Petőfi birth house in Kiskőrös, the Sóstó Museum Village in Nyíregyháza and the Skanzen in Szentendre all do, so whether they open on the holiday in 2027 depends on their 2027 announcements. In 2026, when the 15th was a Sunday, the open-air museums spread their programs across the weekend.
When the programs come out. Towns publish their 15 March programs in the first days of March: in 2026 the Sóstó Museum Village announced on 1 March, the Skanzen on 4 March, Székesfehérvár on 6 March and Kiskunfélegyháza its road closures on 12 March. Until the 2027 programs are out, the times below are last year’s, and we will update this page as the towns publish.
Sources: the public holidays and the rostering rule from §101(1) and §102 of the Labor Code (Act I of 2012) at njt.jog.gov.hu; the announcement dates from the pages linked in each town section below. Read on 29 October 2026.
The Great Plain
Debrecen
Why it matters. On 14 April 1849 Lajos Kossuth read the Declaration of Independence in the Reformed Great Church on Kossuth tér. The wing chair he used that day is kept in the church as one of its treasures. The city’s ceremonial march on 15 March recreates the Debrecen events of 1849.
What happened last year (2026). Debrecen runs one of the fullest 15 March programs outside Budapest, over two days:
- Saturday 14 March, 18:00: torch procession from the Town Hall via Kossuth tér to the Emlékkert memorial garden, with folk musicians and dancers. At 20:00, a free “revolutionary ball” at the Debrecen Hajdú Dance Ensemble’s house, Hatvan utca 32.
- Sunday 15 March: open-air music on Kossuth tér at 8:30, the flag raised with military honours at 9:00, a commemoration on Petőfi tér at 10:00, and at 10:30 a ceremonial march from Petőfi tér down Piac utca to Kossuth tér. The city ceremony, with the mayor’s speech, followed at 11:00 on Kossuth tér.
- In the afternoon: family and craft programs at the Town Hall (Piac utca 20) from 12:00 to 16:00, with a display of 1848 to 1849 hussar uniforms and weapons and guided tours of the building at 13:00 and 15:00; a literary program in the Great Church at 15:00; folk dance on Kossuth tér at 16:00; and the flag lowered at 17:00.
Getting there. Direct InterCity trains leave Budapest-Nyugati every hour and take about 2 hours 35 minutes, so the 11:00 ceremony is reachable on an early train. For the torch procession you need a night. Our Debrecen day-trip guide has the trains and the rest of the city.

Kecskemét
Why it matters. Kecskemét keeps the memorial house of József Katona, whose Bánk bán was on stage at the National Theatre in Pest on the night of 15 March 1848, when the crowd stopped the play for patriotic songs. On the holiday the house turns into a theatre day.
What happened last year (2026).
- Saturday 14 March: a family heritage day with a battle display and horse parade in Guba Park from 13:00, then at 18:48 a candlelit commemoration on the square of the Reformed Old College, Kálvin tér 1 (gathering from 18:30, bring a candle).
- Sunday 15 March: a cockade hunt and craft corner at the Cifrapalota, 10:00 to 14:00; a family playhouse with a hussar demonstration at the Hírös Agóra, Kossuth tér 4, at 11:00; and a drama day at the Katona József Memorial House, Katona József utca 5, at 11:15, free with email registration.
- The evening: an exhibition opening on Rákóczi út at 16:00, followed by a torch procession to Kossuth tér, where the city ceremony began at 17:00 and closed with wreaths at the Kossuth statue. At 18:00 the Hírös Agóra cinema screened Most vagy soha!, a film about Petőfi and the March Youth.
Getting there. Coaches from Népliget take 1 hour 10 minutes, and InterCity trains from Nyugati 1 hour 20 minutes. Kecskemét is the easiest 15 March day trip on this list, and the evening ceremony still leaves time for a train home. See our Kecskemét day-trip guide.

Kiskunfélegyháza
Why it matters. The town keeps a Petőfi Memorial House at Petőfi utca 7, with the Petőfi family’s documents and relics of his life as a student, poet and revolutionary.
What usually happens. The town ceremony is held on Petőfi tér. In 2025 it began at 10:00 with the mayor’s address, a performance by the Kiskun Museum’s staff, the town brass band and wreaths at the Petőfi statue. Last year (2026) the town held a series of events over the weekend of 13 to 15 March, closing Kossuth Lajos utca between the railway station and the Town Hall on the Friday morning and from the Town Hall onward between 16:30 and 18:00 on the 15th.
Getting there. Trains from Budapest toward Szeged call at Kiskunfélegyháza; plan the journey in MÁV’s planner. It pairs well with Kecskemét, the stop before it on the same line.
Sources: the 2025 program and the 2026 road closures at kiskunfelegyhaza.hu (closures); the Memorial House at museum.hu. Read on 29 October 2026.
Kiskőrös
Why it matters. Petőfi was born in Kiskőrös. His birth house on Petőfi tér, built in the late 18th century, became a place of pilgrimage as early as the 1880s, and its street-facing room still has the family’s furniture. Next to it, the Memorial Museum tells his life, and the courtyard holds a sculpture park of busts of 14 of his translators.
What usually happens. The town ceremony takes place around Petőfi tér. Last year (2026) the town calendar listed it at the City Hall’s ceremonial hall, Petőfi tér and the Petőfi Sándor Cultural Centre, without a time. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, and closed on Mondays, which matters in 2027.
Getting there. There are no trains: the Budapest to Kelebia railway has been closed for rebuilding since 1 May 2022, and VOLÁN buses replace the trains, including a route via Kiskőrös. Check MÁV’s page on the line before you go.

Szeged
Why it matters. On Klauzál tér stands the Kárász House, from whose balcony Lajos Kossuth gave his last speech in Hungary. A full-length bronze statue of Kossuth stands on the square, and that is where the city commemorates the revolution.
What usually happens. The city ceremony is held at the Kossuth statue on Klauzál tér, after a ceremonial flag raising on Széchenyi tér, with a speech by the mayor.
Getting there. The Napfény InterCity runs direct from Budapest-Nyugati every hour in about two and a half hours. Our Szeged day-trip guide covers the cathedral, the synagogue and the fish soup.

Nyíregyháza: the Sóstó Museum Village
Why go. The open-air village museum at Sóstó opens its season on the holiday weekend with a revolutionary program, which makes it the best hussar day in the east of the country.
What happened last year (2026). On 15 March entry was free, with the gates open from 9:00 and the program running until 17:00. Hussar re-enactors from Kisvárda rode in on a mounted parade at 9:30 and kept a camp with cannons and wagons all day, with a battle re-enactment the audience could join at 11:00, a talk on hussar life at 12:30, a mounted skills display at 14:00 and a uniform parade at 15:00. Folk theatre, folk dance with verbunk steps, a village fair and a recreated Pilvax Café filled the rest of the day. On the 14th the scouts held a war game in the museum, with a walking ticket.
Getting there. Direct InterCity trains take about three hours from Budapest-Nyugati, and city bus 8 runs from the station to Sóstó; the Museum Village is a short walk from the zoo. It is closed on Mondays in a normal week. See our Nyíregyháza and Sóstó guide.

Northern Hungary
Eger
Why go. Eger’s ceremony is short and traditional, and the castle, the Basilica and the wine cellars of the Valley of the Beautiful Woman make up the rest of the day.
What happened last year (2026). The city’s commemoration began with a festive Mass in the Basilica at 10:00. At 11:20 came the wreath-laying at the Petőfi statue on Petőfi Sándor tér, with a performance by students of the Cistercian grammar school and a speech by the mayor.
Getting there. The direct Agria train leaves Budapest-Keleti every hour and takes 1 hour 52 minutes. Our Eger day-trip guide covers the castle and the cellars.

Transdanubia
Székesfehérvár
Why go. Székesfehérvár runs a full family day on the main square and a hussar camp in the park, close enough to Budapest for a relaxed day trip.
What happened last year (2026).
- Városház tér, 10:00 to 16:00: hussar training for children, lead casting, crafts, a folk playhouse and the József Day market. At 10:00, students staged the street play Vasvári 200, named after Pál Vasvári of the March Youth, followed by speeches and a wreath-laying in the City Hall courtyard. A second performance followed at 16:00.
- Zichy liget, 10:00 to 16:00: a hussar camp with displays at 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00, period weapons demonstrations and a folk playhouse.
- “Talpra, magyar!” flashmob: actors of the Vörösmarty Theatre recited the National Song at Alba Plaza at 14:00, at the theatre at 14:30 and on Városház tér at 15:30.
Getting there. Székesfehérvár is about an hour from Budapest by train. Bory Castle, in our castles of Hungary guide, is in the same town.

Sopron
Why it matters. Petőfi served as a soldier in Sopron in 1839 and 1840; his barracks on Halász utca is now the Petőfi Sándor Primary School. His statue, by István Lisztes, has stood on Petőfi tér since 1974, now in front of the Petőfi Theatre, and that is where the city ceremony is held.
What usually happens. In 2025 the city celebration ran from 9:00 to 12:00, with Petőfi tér and Ógabona tér closed to traffic and the buses diverted. Last year (2026) the evening brought a wine dinner, Március idusán, from 18:00 to 20:00 in the Petőfi-Károlyi cellar beneath Petőfi tér, with an actor of the Petőfi Theatre playing Petőfi, Jókai and Liszt; tickets were 12,000 Ft (about $37).
Getting there. A direct InterCity takes a little over two hours from Budapest-Kelenföld, and the last direct train back leaves early, so Sopron works best with a night. Our Sopron day-trip guide has the details.

Pécs
Why go. Pécs has a square named after the year itself, 48-as tér, and its holiday is an afternoon procession from there to Kossuth tér with mounted hussars in front.
What usually happens. In 2025 the crowd gathered on 48-as tér at 16:15, set off at 16:45 with marching music and a mounted hussar escort, and reached Kossuth tér at 17:00 for the city commemoration, the wreath-laying at 17:30 and a concert at 18:30. Last year (2026) the city listed the commemoration at the same two squares.
Getting there. The direct Mecsek InterCity takes around two and a half hours. It is a long day; our Pécs day-trip guide explains the trains.

Near Budapest: the Skanzen in Szentendre
Why go. The Hungarian Open Air Museum turns the holiday into a hussar weekend for families, the closest real day out from Budapest.
What happened last year (2026). The museum ran its Hussar Days on 14 and 15 March: hussar riders in period uniform showing their weapons and training, skill games where children become “little hussars”, soldiers’ songs and verbunk dancing, cockade and ribbon workshops, and a wreath-laying at the museum’s replica of the 1848 to 1849 honvéd memorial of Sepsiszentgyörgy. The museum’s Korzó café became the Pilvax Café for the weekend, and the old print shop printed the Twelve Points.
Getting there. Take the H5 HÉV from Batthyány tér to Szentendre, 39 minutes, then the local bus to the Skanzen. Our Szentendre guide covers the tickets and the town.

Beyond the Border
The Hungarian communities of Slovakia and Romania mark 15 March too, and for a visitor already in Bratislava or Transylvania it is a chance to see the holiday from the other side of the border.
- Bratislava (Pozsony), Slovakia: last year (2026) the commemoration at the Petőfi memorial began at 15:30. Bratislava is about 2 hours 23 minutes from Budapest-Nyugati by direct train; see our Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest itinerary.
- Komárno (Révkomárom), Slovakia: in 2026 the town held wreath-layings at the Jókai statue at 16:30 and on Klapka tér at 17:00. György Klapka held the Komárom fortress for the revolution until 27 September 1849, when he surrendered on honourable terms.
- Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár), Romania: in 2026 the march gathered at the Protestant Theological Institute at 13:00, an ecumenical service followed at St Michael’s Church at 14:00, and the central ceremony began on the main square at 15:00, organized by the local RMDSZ with the Hungarian Consulate General. In 2025 the program started on 11 March, with a children’s dance house, a cockade-making Pilvax evening and a revolutionary dance house on the night of the 15th.
- Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely), Romania: in 2024 the commemoration was held at 16:00 at the Memorial of the Székely Martyrs on the Postarét.

Planning Your 15 March Outside Budapest
- Pick by time of day. The morning towns are Debrecen (flag at 9:00, ceremony at 11:00) and Eger (wreaths at 11:20); the evening towns are Kecskemét (17:00) and Pécs (procession from 16:15). Kecskemét lets you sleep in and still be home that night.
- Go the evening before for the torches. Debrecen held its torch procession on the evening of 14 March in 2026, which means a night in town.
- With children, choose a museum. The Skanzen and the Sóstó Museum Village run the day as a hussar festival; in 2026 Sóstó was free on the 15th.
- Shop on Saturday. Chain supermarkets close on the holiday itself, so buy what you need before the Monday in 2027.

Good to know
Is 15 March a public holiday all over Hungary?
Yes. The Labor Code lists 15 March among the public holidays, so it applies in every town, not only in Budapest. Big chain shops close because retailers may not roster staff on a public holiday. In 2027 the day is a Monday, which makes Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March a long weekend.
Where outside Budapest is the biggest 15 March celebration?
Going by the 2026 programs, Debrecen ran the fullest day: a torch procession on the evening of the 14th, a flag raising at 9:00 on the 15th, a march from Petőfi tér to Kossuth tér and the city ceremony at 11:00, then family programs and folk dance into the afternoon. Kecskemét and Székesfehérvár also ran full-day programs.
Where can children see hussars on 15 March?
In 2026 there were hussars at the Skanzen in Szentendre (hussar days on 14 and 15 March), at the Sóstó Museum Village in Nyíregyháza (a mounted parade at 9:30 and displays through the day, free on the 15th), in Zichy liget in Székesfehérvár (hussar camp 10:00 to 16:00) and in Kecskemét (a hussar demonstration at the Hírös Agóra at 11:00).
When are the 2027 programs announced?
Usually in the first days of March. In 2026 the Sóstó Museum Village announced its program on 1 March, the Skanzen on 4 March and Székesfehérvár on 6 March. This page will be updated with the 2027 programs as the towns publish them.
Where was Petőfi born?
In Kiskőrös, south of Budapest. His birth house on Petőfi tér is now the Petőfi Birth House and Memorial Museum, open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00. It is closed on Mondays, so check whether it opens on Monday 15 March 2027 once the program is out.
