Christmas Eve, Not Christmas Day
If you arrive in Hungary on the morning of 25 December expecting the big day, you missed it. Hungary does Christmas on the evening of the 24th: the tree goes up that afternoon, presents come out after dark, and by the 25th the main event is already over.
The other thing visitors miss is how good the Christmas markets are outside Budapest. Debrecen, Szeged, Eger, Győr and Sopron each turn their main square into a small winter town of wooden huts, lights and mulled wine, with a cathedral, a castle or a wine cellar a few minutes’ walk away. This guide covers how Hungarians celebrate, what 24 December means in 2026, and every countryside market with its 2026 dates and the train time from Budapest.

How Hungary Celebrates
The Christmas season in Hungary runs from the first Sunday of Advent to Epiphany in January, and the four weeks of Advent used to be a quiet, fasting time with no weddings or dances. These are the dates that matter in 2026.
| Date (2026) | What happens |
|---|---|
| Sun 29 November | First Sunday of Advent; the first candle is lit on the Advent wreath |
| Sat 5 to Sun 6 December | Mikulás: children put polished boots in the window overnight |
| Sun 13 December | Luca day: the Luca chair is started and Luca wheat is sown |
| Sun 20 December | Fourth Sunday of Advent |
| Thu 24 December | Szenteste: the tree, the presents and the Christmas Eve supper |
| Night of 24 to 25 December | Midnight Mass |
| Fri 25 and Sat 26 December | Public holidays; 26 December was the main day for regölés |
The Advent wreath itself is younger than it looks. A Lutheran pastor in Germany came up with a wheel of candles in the mid-19th century, it was later wound with fir, and only began to spread in Catholic circles, Hungary’s included, in the 1930s and 1940s. Today almost every market in this guide has a giant one, with a candle lit on each Advent Sunday.
Who brings the presents
Hungarian children get two visits. Mikulás, St Nicholas, comes on the night of 5 December and fills the cleaned boots in the window with sweets and fruit. The krampusz who tags along carries a bundle of twigs for anyone who misbehaved. The custom of gifts in the window is partly an urban one, with Austrian roots, and the name Mikulás came from Czech in the 19th century. In the Soviet-influenced decades after the war he was also called Télapó, Father Winter, and you still hear both names.
The main presents come on 24 December from Jézuska, the Christ Child, who also brings the tree. Centuries ago St Nicholas did the job in the German lands, until Protestant reformers handed it to the Christ Child, and that is the tradition Hungary kept. In some Transylvanian Hungarian families it is the angels who come. Big family gift-giving in the villages is newer than you might think: it became general only after 1945. The decorated tree took a similar route, from aristocratic homes in the first half of the 19th century to middle-class ones and then, in the 20th century, to everyone.
Luca day, 13 December
St Lucy’s day came with a list of folk bans: no spinning, weaving, washing or baking. Two customs survive. The Luca chair was started on the 13th and worked on a little each day until Christmas Eve, traditionally from 13 kinds of wood. Its maker took it to midnight Mass, stood on it and was supposed to see who the village witches were, then ran home scattering poppy seed behind him and burned the chair. Luca wheat is the gentler one: wheat grains set to sprout in a dish on 13 December. The greener it grew by Christmas, the better next year’s harvest and the family’s health, and many Hungarian homes still put a dish on the Christmas table.
The 24th: fast, supper and midnight Mass
24 December was the vigil of Christmas and a fast day, and in the countryside it went on cleaning, baking and cooking rather than work in the fields. Catholic families ate nothing until the evening bells rang, and the supper that followed mixed lean fasting dishes with a long run of courses: thin wafers, garlic, apples, walnuts and poppy seed noodles, plus beans or lentils for plenty in the coming year. A widespread rule said you must not lean on the table, and the women of the house were not to get up during the meal. In many homes the family then played cards for walnuts until it was time for midnight Mass, the night when animals were said to talk and girls looked into the well for a glimpse of a future husband.
The modern table is fish soup or stuffed cabbage, then bejgli, the walnut or poppy seed roll, with szaloncukor, the wrapped fondant sweets, hanging on the tree. Our Hungarian Christmas food guide has all of it, with prices and where to buy.
Regölés
On 26 December, St Stephen the Martyr’s day, groups of young men called regösök used to go from house to house, especially where there were daughters of marrying age, dressed in fur coats turned inside out and carrying a chain-hung stick and a friction drum. They sang a song wishing the household luck and fertility, and were given gifts in return. The custom is recorded in print as early as 1552, and it survives today in a handful of villages in Transdanubia, west of the Danube.
Is 24 December a holiday?
Not legally. Hungary’s Labour Code lists 25 and 26 December as public holidays but not the 24th. In 2026 the working-day decree turns Thursday 24 December into a rest day for most employees on a standard schedule, and they make it up by working Saturday 12 December. In practice offices are shut on the 24th and shops close early. That may still change: a bill to make the 24th a public holiday from 2026, with no make-up Saturday, was tabled on 23 September and debated in Parliament on 13 October, and the final vote had not taken place on 25 October. If it passes, most shops would close for the whole day. For what is open in the capital over the three days, see our Christmas opening hours guide, and for the whole year our Hungarian public holidays guide.

Debrecen
Why go. Debrecen starts its Advent a week before every other big town. The whole car-free center, from the Great Church down Piac utca, is strung with lights, and the organizers point out that it came fifth in European Best Destinations’ vote for Europe’s best Christmas markets of 2025 to 2026. The ice rink on Kossuth tér, under the twin towers of the Great Church, was named Europe’s most beautiful Christmas rink in 2025. The opening night is a show of its own: the Jégvirágkarnevál, the Ice Flower Carnival, the winter twin of the city’s summer Flower Carnival, sends floats and dancers along Piac utca from Kossuth tér on Saturday 21 November 2026 at 17:00, and the Advent lights go on that evening.
What else to do that day. The Great Church is the Calvinist heart of the country; behind it the Reformed College keeps the Great Library, and the Déri Museum hangs Munkácsy’s three huge paintings of the Passion side by side. Tram 1 runs on to the Great Forest for the Aquaticum baths. Plan around the winter hours: from 1 November the Great Church closes at 15:00 on weekdays and the Reformed College is open Monday to Friday only, and the Déri Museum and MODEM close on Mondays. Tuesday to Friday is the clean choice.
Getting there. InterCity trains leave Budapest-Nyugati every hour and take 2 hours 35 minutes; the last direct train back leaves at 21:04. It is a long day for an evening market, and a far better overnight.
Dates and details, 2026.
- Market: 20 November to 23 December, Kossuth tér and the Piac utca area. Open Monday to Thursday and Sunday 11:00 to 20:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 21:00, and 23 December 11:00 to 19:00.
- Ice rink: Kossuth tér, 20 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, including over Christmas (24 December 9:00 to 16:00). Skate hire is 2,500 Ft a session, plus a deposit or photo ID. The ticket price was not out yet in late October.
- Also on the square: a baroque carousel, a Christmas mini-train, a live nativity at the Town Hall and a craft corner for children.
- Pay by card: the food and drink stalls are cashless (bank card or the FestiPay card); the craft stalls take cash too.
Dates, hours and features from debreceniadvent.hu, read 25 October 2026.
Szeged
Why go. Szeged puts its market on Dóm tér, a huge square enclosed by arcades, with the twin towers of the Votive Church at one end. Over Advent it fills with a straw maze lit by thousands of LEDs, a storytelling corner, craft workshops and a 50 m Ferris wheel with closed cabins, while Klauzál tér and Dugonics tér pour the mulled wine. The event is free to walk.
What else to do that day. Climb the cathedral tower, see the New Synagogue, one of the largest in Europe, and the rippling Art Nouveau Reök Palace, then have a bowl of Szeged fish soup; our Szeged guide covers them all. Most sights close on Mondays, and the synagogue is also shut on Saturdays and from 24 December 2026 to 5 January 2027. The Móra Museum opens only from 10:00 to 12:00 on 27 November and 3, 4 and 18 December.
Getting there. The Napfény InterCity runs direct from Budapest-Nyugati every hour in about two and a half hours, arriving at 16 past the hour. Opening day falls in a track-works window: from 23 to 27 November and on 30 November and 1 December trains leave Nyugati at 42 past and take about 2 hours 34; on the opening weekend itself and from 2 December they leave at 50 past. On weekdays the last direct train back leaves at 20:44.
Dates and details, 2026.
- Market: Friday 27 November from 18:00 to Thursday 24 December at noon. Daily hours were not out yet in late October.
- Advent Sundays: a candle on the giant wreath is lit each Sunday from 29 November.
- Evening extras the organizers list: fire-juggling on Fridays and light projections on the last two weekends.
Dates and features from szegedtourism.hu, read 25 October 2026.
Eger
Why go. Eger is the easiest market day trip in Hungary and the most complete one. The market sits on Dobó István tér, the main square, with the castle on the hill above it, and the organizers promise close to 80 program items for 2026, with festive concerts; in 2025 that meant choirs around town and an Ice Palace for children. Then there is the wine. On Saturday 12 December 2026 the town runs an Advent Cellar Tour in the Szépasszony-völgy, the Valley of the Beautiful Women, a horseshoe of cellars cut into the soft rock just outside the center.
What else to do that day. Start with the castle in the morning, walk down to the free Basilica and the minaret, and spend the afternoon in the cellar valley or soaking in the working Turkish bath. Our Eger guide has the tasting prices and a timed plan for the day.
Getting there. The Agria train leaves Budapest-Keleti every hour on the hour, goes direct and takes 1 hour 52 minutes, with no compulsory seat reservation. The 20:08 back reaches Keleti at 22:05, late enough to see the square lit up.
Dates and details, 2026.
- Market: 27 November to 24 December 2026, Dobó István tér. Hours and the program had not been published in late October.
- 2025 for reference: entry was free, candles on the Advent wreath were lit on Sundays at 16:00, and the Ice Palace in the Town Hall opened Friday 15:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 18:00.

Győr
Why go. Győr is a baroque river town an hour and a bit from Budapest, and in Advent its whole old town becomes the market. In 2025 the stalls ran from Baross út across Széchenyi tér to Dunakapu tér on the Danube arm, with a Ferris wheel and an ice rink on Dunakapu tér by the river, a light show projected several times each evening on Széchenyi tér, and a trail of tiny elf doors for children to find. The city has not named the 2026 squares yet, only the city center.

What else to do that day. Climb the Bishop’s Castle tower on Káptalandomb for the view over the rivers and see the cathedral below it. On Széchenyi tér, the Esterházy Palace shows Picasso prints until 20 December 2026. The RQ water park and thermal bath is there for a warm-up. Pannonhalma Archabbey, a bus ride away, is open Tuesday to Saturday in December but closed on 24 to 26 December. Our Győr and Pannonhalma guide has the hours.
Getting there. Until 12 December 2026 the InterCity leaves Budapest-Kelenföld every hour at 25 past and takes 1 hour 12 minutes. Trains back leave at 21 past, the last at 20:21 (21:21 on Sundays), and later railjets run to Keleti.
Dates and details, 2026.
- Market: Friday 27 November from 16:00 to Wednesday 23 December at 18:00, in the city center. The city had not named the squares or hours in late October.
- 2025 for reference: the Széchenyi tér craft market opened Monday to Thursday 14:00 to 20:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 20:00. The light projection ran on the hour from 17:00, and the Dunakapu tér rink stayed open over Christmas.
2026 dates from hellogyor.hu, the city’s program site; 2025 layout and hours from gyor.hu. Read 25 October 2026.
Sopron
Why go. Sopron’s medieval old town, built on Roman foundations, is small and largely car-free, and at Christmas it is the coziest market setting in the country. In 2025 the stalls stood on Várkerület every day and on Fő tér from Friday to Sunday, a giant Advent wreath on Fő tér got a new candle each Sunday evening, and free sightseeing trains took visitors on a 20-minute loop through the lit streets. Then you walk into a wine bar for a glass of Kékfrankos, the red the town is proudest of.
What else to do that day. Climb the Firewatch Tower first for the view over the old town (it opens every day and is floodlit after dark), then the Museum Quarter on Fő tér, the Goat Church and the medieval synagogue. With a second day, the Esterházy Palace at Fertőd has its own light park, Fantasy Garden, from 21 October 2026 to 10 January 2027, closed on 24 and 25 December and 1 January. Our Sopron guide has the details. The museums close on Mondays.
Getting there. Until 12 December 2026 a direct InterCity leaves Budapest-Kelenföld every two hours at 25 past and takes 2 hours 13 minutes. The catch for a market visit: the last direct train back leaves at 18:21 (20:21 on Sundays), before the lights are at their best. Stay the night.
Dates and details, 2026.
- Market: 27 November to 23 December 2026. The city had not published venues or hours in late October. Note that the 2025 market ran to the 24th, but 2026 ends on the 23rd.
- 2025 for reference: the stalls generally opened 15:00 to 21:00, and the Advent candles on Fő tér were lit on Sundays at 18:00.
2026 dates from soproniadvent.hu; 2025 details from visitsopron.com. Read 25 October 2026.
Pécs
Why go. Pécs has the most unusual main square in Hungary: Széchenyi tér is topped by an Ottoman-era mosque that now serves as a Catholic church. The Advent craft and fairy tale market sets up on that square, with music, children’s programs, a food courtyard and light painting in 2025. By day you have the mosque of Pasha Qasim, the UNESCO-listed Early Christian burial chambers and the Csontváry Museum, all within a few minutes’ walk; see our Pécs guide. The burial chambers and the Csontváry close on Mondays, and from 4 November the chambers close at 17:00.
Getting there. The direct Mecsek InterCity takes about two and a half hours and runs roughly every two hours. The Budapest departure station has changed more than once this year, so check it in the MÁVPlusz app.
Dates. 2026 dates not yet published. In 2025 the market ran 28 November to 24 December on Széchenyi tér.
2025 dates from visithungary.com, the national tourism agency’s guide, read 25 October 2026.
Veszprém
Why go. Veszprém, the City of Queens, sits on a narrow ridge just north of Lake Balaton. The castle quarter is a single street you can walk at any hour, the Fire Tower plays a tune every hour, and Herend’s porcelain workshop is 20 to 30 minutes away by bus. The Advent market in 2025 ran along Kossuth Lajos utca, with concerts, food and crafts. Most sights close on Mondays, the Fire Tower asks you to phone ahead between November and mid-March, and Herend’s shop is closed 24 to 26 December. Our Veszprém and Herend guide has the details.
Getting there. The InterCity leaves Budapest-Déli every hour on the hour and takes 1 hour 28 minutes; the last one back leaves at 21:32.
Dates. 2026 dates not yet published. In 2025 the market ran 28 November to 23 December.
2025 dates from veszpreminfo.hu, read 25 October 2026.
Székesfehérvár
Székesfehérvár keeps its Advent family-sized. In 2025 it ran from 30 November to 21 December, with programs on all four Advent weekends, school and kindergarten children on a weekday stage, a small Advent-calendar surprise (a poem, a story or a song) each afternoon, storybook installations around the market and a small train circling the city Christmas tree. 2026 dates not yet published.
2025 details from turizmus.szekesfehervar.hu, read 25 October 2026.
Gödöllő: Story of Lights
Not a market but the closest Christmas outing to Budapest. The Story of Lights light garden fills the grounds of the Gödöllő Royal Palace, the Baroque palace where Empress Elisabeth, Sisi, liked best to stay in Hungary, and its installations walk you through the palace’s story from the Baroque, through the royal years, to today. The H8 HÉV from Örs vezér tere takes 41 to 43 minutes and stops across the road from the palace; our Gödöllő guide covers the palace itself.

Planning a Market Day Trip
- Come for the evening. The markets run from the afternoon into the evening, and the good parts happen after dark: Győr’s light show ran on the hour from 17:00 in 2025, Szeged keeps its projections for the last two weekends, and the Advent candle lightings are late-afternoon or evening events. Spend the day on the sights and reach the square at dusk.
- Know your last train. The direct trains back leave Debrecen at 21:04, Veszprém at 21:32, Szeged at 20:44 on weekdays, Győr at 20:21 (21:21 on Sundays) and Eger at 20:08 for a sensible arrival. Sopron’s last direct train is the 18:21, which is why it needs a night.
- Check trains after 12 December. The national timetable changes after 12 December, so the Kelenföld departures for Győr and Sopron may move. Look up your exact date in the MÁV planner.
- Pick the weekend for the full program. Some parts run only at weekends: Sopron’s Fő tér stalls were Friday to Sunday in 2025, and Eger’s Ice Palace opened only Friday afternoons and weekends.
- Do not leave it to the 24th. Debrecen, Győr and Sopron close on 23 December, Szeged at noon on the 24th, and Eger on the 24th. Debrecen’s ice rink stays open through the holidays, but the stalls are gone.
The Verdict
For one Christmas trip outside Budapest, go to Eger: an hourly direct train, a castle in the morning, the cellar valley in the afternoon and Dobó tér lit up before the 20:08 home, with the Advent Cellar Tour on 12 December as the best date of all. Győr is the other easy day, and Debrecen is the one to stay overnight for, ideally from Saturday 21 November for the Ice Flower Carnival. And then do Christmas the Hungarian way: be home by the evening of the 24th, because that is when it happens.

Good to know
When is Christmas celebrated in Hungary?
On the evening of 24 December. Hungarians call it Szenteste, Holy Evening: families decorate the tree that day, open presents after dark and sit down to the Christmas Eve supper, and many go on to midnight Mass. 25 and 26 December are both public holidays. In 2026 Christmas Eve falls on a Thursday.
Is December 24 a holiday in Hungary?
Not as a public holiday. The Labour Code lists 25 and 26 December but not the 24th. In 2026, though, a ministry decree on the working-day calendar makes Thursday 24 December a rest day for most employees on a standard schedule, and they work Saturday 12 December in exchange. So most offices are shut on the 24th, and shops close early. A bill to make the 24th a public holiday from this year was still awaiting its final vote on 25 October 2026. Our guide to what is open over Christmas in Budapest has the details.
Who brings presents in Hungary?
Two different figures. Mikulás, St Nicholas, comes on the night of 5 to 6 December and leaves small treats in children's boots set out in the window. The real presents arrive on 24 December from Jézuska, the Christ Child, who also brings the tree; in some Transylvanian Hungarian families it is the angels. You may also hear Mikulás called Télapó, a name that spread under Soviet influence after the war.
What are the best Christmas markets in Hungary outside Budapest?
Debrecen, Szeged, Eger, Győr and Sopron are the big five with confirmed 2026 dates. Debrecen's Advent fills the city center and has a large ice rink on Kossuth tér. Szeged's sits on Dóm tér below the twin-towered cathedral. Eger's is on Dobó tér under the castle, with an Advent cellar tour in the wine valley on 12 December. Győr's spreads through its baroque old town, and Sopron's lights up the medieval streets on the Austrian border.
When do the Christmas markets in Hungary open in 2026?
Debrecen opens first, on 20 November, and runs to 23 December; its ice rink stays until 10 January 2027. Szeged, Eger, Győr and Sopron all open on 27 November. Győr and Sopron close on 23 December, Eger on 24 December and Szeged at noon on 24 December. Pécs, Veszprém and Székesfehérvár had not published 2026 dates by late October.
Is Gödöllő's Story of Lights worth it?
Yes, if you want an easy evening out of Budapest. The H8 HÉV gets you to Gödöllő in 41 to 43 minutes, and the light garden in the grounds of Empress Elisabeth's favorite palace tells the palace's story from the Baroque to today. It runs 17:00 to 21:00 every day from 24 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, except 1 November and 24 and 25 December. Go Monday to Thursday and buy online: an adult ticket is 4,300 Ft, against 4,800 Ft at the desk and on weekends.
Can I do a Hungarian Christmas market as a day trip from Budapest?
Yes, best in Eger or Győr. Eger is 1 hour 52 from Keleti on an hourly train, and the 20:08 back still gives you the evening lights. Győr is 1 hour 12 from Kelenföld, with InterCity trains back until 20:21. Debrecen and Szeged are about two and a half hours each way, so you lose most of the evening unless you stay. In Sopron the last direct train back leaves at 18:21 (20:21 on Sundays), so book a room there.
