15 March is the day Hungary remembers the revolution of 1848, and in Budapest it means a state ceremony, free museums and the big shops shut. In 2027 it falls on a Monday, which turns it into a three-day weekend.
For a visitor that is mostly good news. The museums that matter open, entry to their exhibitions is free for everyone, and the center is busy with ceremonies and family programs. What follows is how the day usually runs, what happened last year, and how to plan around the parts that close. Outside the capital, our guide to 15 March across Hungary covers the towns where 1848 played out.

What 15 March Celebrates
On 15 March 1848, a group of young radicals in Pest, the “March Youth” around the poet Sándor Petőfi, decided not to wait for the assembly planned for 19 March. They took two texts to a printing press and printed them without the censor’s approval: the Twelve Points, the reformers’ list of demands, and Petőfi’s Nemzeti dal (National Song). By evening the Pest city council had backed the demands, the Governor’s Council in Buda had abolished censorship, and a crowd had freed the jailed radical Mihály Táncsics. The revolution turned into a war of independence that lasted into 1849.
That is why the day is also the Day of the Hungarian Press, celebrated since 1990, and why Hungary’s Fundamental Law names 15 March first among its three national holidays.
The kokárda. The symbol of the day is the kokárda, a small rosette of ribbon in the national tricolor, red, white and green, which Hungarians pin to their coats for the day.

2027: A Monday Holiday and a Long Weekend
Because 15 March 2027 is a Monday, the holiday weekend runs from Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March. The pattern a visitor feels:
- Saturday 13 March: an ordinary Saturday. Shops, markets and museums keep their usual weekend hours.
- Sunday 14 March: the eve. In 2026 the National Museum’s façade light show already ran on the 14th.
- Monday 15 March: the holiday. Chains and malls closed, ceremonies in the center, free museum exhibitions, holiday transport.
- Tuesday 16 March: back to normal.
The 2027 program is not out yet. The government publishes the Budapest state program a few days before the holiday, typically around 10 to 13 March. This page will carry the confirmed times then. Until that, plan around the pattern below rather than around last year’s clock.

The Usual Program, Year by Year
The core is the same every year: the national flag raised with military honors in front of Parliament in the morning, a state ceremony with the Prime Minister’s speech, an open day in Parliament, and free family programs at the National Museum and in the Buda Castle Palace District. What changes is where the ceremony is held and when.
| 2025 (Saturday) | 2026, last year (Sunday) | 2027 (Monday) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flag raising, Kossuth Lajos tér | 09:00 | 07:30 | To be confirmed |
| Hussar procession | 09:30, Kossuth tér to the National Museum | Not in the program | To be confirmed |
| State ceremony | 10:30, Museum Garden (Múzeumkert) | 13:00, Kossuth Lajos tér | Venue to be confirmed |
| Open Parliament | 10:00 to 18:00 | 15:00 to 18:00 | To be confirmed |
| National Museum family program | 14:00 to 18:00 | 10:00 to 16:00 | To be confirmed |
| Façade light show, National Museum | 17:30 to 23:00 | 17:30 to 23:00, on 14 and 15 March | To be confirmed |
The 2025 hussar procession was open for anyone to join, along Alkotmány utca, Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út, Károly körút, Astoria and Múzeum körút. Open Parliament in 2025 covered the ceremonial staircase, the Dome Hall and the Holy Crown; in 2026 it ran in the afternoon, after the ceremony on the square.
The Palace District in Buda Castle holds its own free family day. In 2025 it ran 10:00 to 17:00. In past years the program, run by the Várkert Bazár, has included crafts in the Riding Hall (Lovarda), including making a kokárda, a hussar obstacle course on hobby horses for children, weapons demonstrations and living-history scenes in the Csikós Courtyard, and mounted hussars patrolling the district. Some of the family events need registration in advance. Our Buda Castle guide covers the district itself.

Museums on the Holiday: Free, and Open on a Monday
Free entry is the law, not a promotion. A government decree (194/2000) says that on the national holidays named in the Fundamental Law, museum exhibitions can be visited free of charge regardless of citizenship. You do not need a Hungarian or EU passport.
Monday does not close the big museums. The museums below close on ordinary Mondays, but a holiday Monday follows the holiday schedule. In 2026 the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery both opened 10:00 to 18:00 on Easter Monday (6 April) and Whit Monday (25 May). Their 2027 lists, which will show 15 March, are not published yet. This table will carry them when they are.
| Museum | 15 March 2026 (last year) | Monday holidays in 2026 | Getting in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hungarian National Museum | Open, exhibitions free, family programs 10:00 to 16:00 | Closed on ordinary Mondays | Programs without registration, except the garden walk |
| Hungarian National Gallery, Buda Castle | Open 10:00 to 18:00, free, entry until 17:00 | Open 10:00 to 18:00 | In order of arrival |
| Museum of Fine Arts, Heroes’ Square | Open 10:00 to 14:00, free | Open 10:00 to 18:00 | No booking possible; tickets in limited numbers |
| Museum of Ethnography, City Park | Open, free | Closed on ordinary Mondays | Free under the national-holiday rule |
One pattern worth knowing at the National Museum. When the state ceremony is held in the Museum Garden, the museum opens late: in 2024 it opened only at 14:00 on 15 March, and in 2025 its free family program ran 14:00 to 18:00. In 2026, with the ceremony at Kossuth tér, the programs started at 10:00. So the 2027 venue tells you when to go.
More on each in our guides to the Hungarian National Museum, the National Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Ethnography.

Open or Closed on 15 March
| On the holiday | |
|---|---|
| Supermarket chains, mall stores | Closed |
| Restaurants, cafés, bars | Can open |
| Petrol-station shops | Can open |
| Small shops run by their owners | Can open |
| Great Market Hall (Nagycsarnok) | Closed on public holidays |
| Pharmacies | Duty pharmacies, listed on the OGYÉI pharmacy finder |
| Széchenyi Bath | Weekend hours, 08:00 to 20:00, pools until 19:40 |
| BKK public transport | Sunday and holiday timetable |
Why the big shops close. Hungary’s Labor Code lets employers roster staff on a public holiday only for a narrow list of work, such as jobs the day itself requires or services that meet a need arising from social custom, which covers catering and tourism. Ordinary retail is not on that list, so the chains cannot staff their tills. A shop where the owner stands behind the counter is not bound by the rostering rule. Do your grocery shopping on Saturday.
Pharmacies. For a duty pharmacy use the official finder at ogyei.gov.hu/gyogyszertarkereso, which lists the pharmacies serving on rest days and public holidays.
Baths. Our Széchenyi guide has the prices, and Budapest in March covers Rudas and Lukács on the month’s three holidays. The public holidays guide has the same open and closed pattern for every holiday of the year.

Getting Around on the Day
Public transport runs, on BKK’s Sunday and holiday timetable, but the ceremonies move lines around. The 2027 changes are published by BKK a few days before the day at bkk.hu and in the BudapestGO app. Here is what a ceremony at the National Museum looked like in 2025:
- Airport bus 100E ran only between Kálvin tér and Liszt Ferenc Airport Terminal 2 from 04:30 to 16:30, skipping Deák Ferenc tér and Astoria. Between 10:00 and 13:00 it boarded on the far side of Üllői út, in front of Szabó Ervin tér. BKK pointed travelers to the M3 between Deák Ferenc tér and Kálvin tér.
- Trams 2, 2B and 23 did not run between Jászai Mari tér and Kossuth Lajos tér until 10:30.
- Trams 47 and 49 turned back at Batthyány tér instead of Deák Ferenc tér until 20:00, skipping Fővám tér, Kálvin tér, Astoria and Deák Ferenc tér.
- M1: if police closed the stops, trains ran through Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út and Opera without stopping between 13:00 and 19:00.
- Roads: Múzeum körút was closed 00:30 to 16:00, Kossuth Lajos tér until 10:30, Rákóczi út between Blaha Lujza tér and Ferenciek tere 08:00 to 14:00, and Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd) 12:00 to 20:00.
Last year (2026), with the ceremony at Kossuth tér, the police closures moved north and east: streets around Kossuth Lajos tér 08:00 to 17:00, an access route from Árpád fejedelem útja over Margaret Bridge to Kossuth tér in stages 10:00 to 14:00, and Liberty Bridge 12:00 to 20:00 again. Cars parked in the no-stopping zones were towed; owners can call 06-80/180-780.
Our metro guide covers tickets and lines.

Crowds and Rallies, Calmly
15 March is also a day for political gatherings in the city center. For a visitor, the practical side is simple: the crowds are where the streets are closed, and the closures are published in advance.
Last year (2026) that meant Kossuth Lajos tér in the morning and at midday, and in the afternoon the stretch from Deák Ferenc tér along Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út and Andrássy út to Heroes’ Square, closed in stages 13:00 to 16:30, with Heroes’ Square and the Kodály körönd shut 14:00 to 22:00. Pilvax köz in the Inner City was a no-stopping zone 10:00 to 19:00.
If you would rather avoid the crowds, check the police and BKK lists for 2027 when they appear, take the metro under the closed streets instead of walking along them, and keep the museums and the baths for the afternoon. If you want to see the day, the family programs at the museum and in the castle are the part built for visitors.

A Self-Guided 1848 Walk
The revolution happened on foot, and the Pest half of it fits into a short walk; the last stop is across the river.
- Pilvax köz. The Pilvax café, where the March Youth met and where Petőfi first read the Nemzeti dal aloud, stood on today’s Petőfi Sándor utca, by the lane now called Pilvax köz.
- The Landerer and Heckenast press, corner of Kossuth Lajos utca and Szép utca. Around ten in the morning the young men and a growing crowd reached the printing house, then on Hatvani utca, and seized a press “in the name of the people”. The Twelve Points and the National Song came off it uncensored. The building still stands on the corner.
- The Hungarian National Museum. At 15:00 a mass meeting gathered in front of the museum, with Petőfi’s own estimate at about ten thousand people. The famous picture of Petőfi reciting the poem on the museum steps is a legend: no contemporary source records a recitation there that day. The Museum Garden in front of them is where the 2025 state ceremony was held.
- Március 15. tér. Walk down to the Danube by Elisabeth Bridge to the square named after the day. The crowd went from the museum to the Pest city council, which adopted the Twelve Points and sent a committee to Buda.
- Buda Castle. Across the river, the Governor’s Council gave in within minutes and abolished censorship; the news was announced from a window at about 17:30. The crowd then freed Táncsics from the Buda prison and pulled his carriage back to Pest themselves.

Hungary’s Other National Days
15 March has two counterparts. 23 October marks the 1956 revolution, and 20 August is St. Stephen’s Day, the third national holiday in the Fundamental Law. For the rest of March, the weather, Easter and the clock change, see Budapest in March.

Good to know
Is 15 March a public holiday in Hungary?
Yes. Hungary's Fundamental Law names 15 March as a national holiday for the 1848 to 1849 revolution and war of independence, and the Labor Code lists it among the public holidays. In 2027 it falls on a Monday, which gives a three-day weekend from Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March.
Are museums open on Monday 15 March 2027?
The big ones do open on Monday holidays. In 2026 the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery were open 10:00 to 18:00 on Easter Monday and on Whit Monday, against their usual Monday closure. Their 2027 holiday hours are not published yet; this page lists them once they are. Entry to museum exhibitions is free on 15 March for everyone, whatever their citizenship, under a government decree.
What time is the 15 March ceremony in Budapest?
The 2027 times are usually announced around 10 to 13 March. Last year (2026) the flag was raised at Kossuth Lajos tér, in front of Parliament, at 07:30, and the state ceremony followed there at 13:00. In 2025 the flag went up at 09:00, a hussar procession left for the National Museum at 09:30 and the ceremony began in the Museum Garden at 10:30.
Are shops open in Budapest on 15 March?
The big ones are not. The Labor Code lets retailers roster staff on a Sunday but not on a public holiday, so supermarket chains and mall stores close. Restaurants, cafés, petrol-station shops and small shops run by their owners can open, and duty pharmacies are listed on the official OGYÉI pharmacy finder. The Great Market Hall is closed on public holidays.
Does public transport run on 15 March in Budapest?
Yes, on BKK's Sunday and holiday timetable, with diversions around the ceremonies. In 2025 the 100E airport bus ran only between Kálvin tér and the airport from 04:30 to 16:30, trams 2, 2B and 23 skipped Jászai Mari tér to Kossuth Lajos tér until 10:30, and Liberty Bridge was closed 12:00 to 20:00. BKK publishes each year's changes a few days before the holiday.
Are the thermal baths open on 15 March?
Yes. Széchenyi runs on weekend hours on every public holiday, so the bath is open 08:00 to 20:00 and the pools must be left by 19:40.
