Siófok: Beaches, Nightlife and the Boat to Tihany
On this page
Hungary’s Summer Party Town, and a Quiet Lake the Rest of the Year
From May to August 2026, Siófok counted 959,000 guest nights, more than any other town on Lake Balaton, well ahead of Balatonfüred and Hévíz. In July and August it is the lake’s beach and party capital: long shallow beaches, a promenade that stays loud until sunrise, and boats leaving the port for Tihany all day. In October the same promenade is lined with shuttered kiosks, and the town feels like a different place.
That split is the key to planning a trip. Come in June to August for the beaches, the nightlife and the boat to Tihany. Come out of season for a calm lakeside walk, the view from the Water Tower and a long soak at the Galerius bath, and skip it if you were hoping for summer in October. This guide tells you what works when.

The Beaches
Siófok’s beaches line a long stretch of shore, and the main ones are run by Balaton-parti Kft., a company owned by the town. The big choice is free or paid, and the second one is party or quiet. The Nagystrand (Grand Beach) and Petőfi sétány behind it are where the young crowd and the noise are. Ezüstpart to the east and the beaches toward Zamárdi in the west are calmer and more residential. The water on this side of the lake stays shallow and warm a long way out, which is perfect for small children and less fun if you want to swim proper lengths.
| Beach | Free or paid | Season (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nagystrand (Grand Beach), Petőfi sétány | Paid | Late May to mid-September, 08:00 to 19:00 | The main beach: more than 8 hectares, 670 m of shore, a children’s pool, pedalo, SUP and kayak rental |
| Sóstó beach | Paid, 1,700 Ft adult | 19 June to 30 August, 08:00 to 18:00 | Smaller paid beach |
| Aranypart (Gold Coast) | Free | Lifeguards 12 June to 31 August | Long, grassy and shaded, with free showers and toilets, playgrounds, volleyball and teqball courts, pedalo and SUP rental |
| Ezüstpart (Silver Coast) | Free | Lifeguards 12 June to 31 August | Flat and easy to reach, the family pick, with an accessible water hoist and boat rental; local bus line 1 |
| Orgona utca beach | Free | Lifeguards 12 June to 31 August | Siófok’s westernmost beach, on the Zamárdi border, with a playground and outdoor gym |
| Újhelyi beach | Free | Summer | Smaller free beach |
| Bimbó utca beach | Free | Summer | Smaller free beach |
Nagystrand prices (summer 2026). The beach has three price periods: a cheaper pre-season from late May to mid-June, the main season from mid-June to the end of August, and a cheaper post-season into mid-September.
| Day ticket | Pre- and post-season | Main season |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | 1,800 Ft (about $5.60) | 2,800 Ft (about $8.60) |
| Child 4 to 14 | 900 Ft | 1,100 Ft |
| Student or pensioner | 1,200 Ft | 1,700 Ft |
| Adult after 17:00 | 1,100 Ft | 1,600 Ft |
Under-4s go free, and a three-day adult pass (main season only) costs 7,500 Ft. You can pay in forint cash, by bank card or with a SZÉP card. SUP rental was 4,500 Ft an hour and kayaks 2,500 to 3,500 Ft an hour. Dogs are not allowed on any of the town’s beaches. Prices can change from year to year, so treat these as a guide.
Free beaches. Aranypart and Ezüstpart both have changing rooms with lockers, Aranypart has free showers and toilets, and there is free parking at Darnay K. tér (the streets along the water are paid). In July and August the Nagystrand fills up fast on Saturdays, so come early, or pick a free beach on a weekday.

Nightlife
Siófok’s party reputation is earned on one street: Petőfi sétány, the promenade behind the Nagystrand. On summer nights it is packed with bars, food stands and groups of friends moving between them, and it is the classic Hungarian stop for stag and hen weekends. Expect it to be loud late into the night; if you are not there to party, sleep further east or west.
- Plázs Siófok (Petőfi sétány 3) is the anchor. By day it is a sandy beach club with a 500 m² sun deck and a pool; by night it bills itself as Balaton’s largest open-air venue, with concerts and parties from sunset to sunrise. VIP terrace and skybox packages are sold on its website.
- Renegade Pub, at the same address, is a pub-club with stag and hen packages and an unlimited-drinks night for 5,000 Ft. Its 2026 season ended with a closing party on 29 August.
- On the water, BAHART ran the Plázs party boat again in 2026, plus a calmer sunset cruise from Siófok.
What the season looks like. Treat Siófok nightlife as a June to August thing. It usually gets going around the Pentecost weekend and winds down at the end of August, when the big venues hold their closing parties. In September and October the strip is quiet, and in winter it is closed.
The festivals are next door. STRAND Fesztivál takes place in Zamárdi, the next town west, not in Siófok, and Zamárdi is also the home of Balaton Sound. STRAND drew more than 94,000 people over four days in 2026, and its next edition is announced for 19 to 21 August 2027. Siófok is the obvious base for either, with far more places to stay. For the biggest night on the lake, see our August 20 Lake Balaton fireworks guide.

Siófok to Tihany
Tihany sits on its peninsula almost directly across the water from Siófok, and getting there is part of the fun. There are two ways, and which one you use depends on the date.
By boat (spring to 1 November). BAHART boats leave from Siófok port for Tihany, some direct, some calling at Balatonfüred first. The trip takes 60 to 90 minutes, and an adult one-way ticket is 2,400 Ft (about $7.40). Children aged 4 to 14 pay 1,200 Ft, students and pensioners 1,800 Ft, under-4s go free, and a family ticket for two adults and their children is 5,000 Ft. A bike costs 1,000 Ft extra. Tickets are valid only for the date and sailing printed on them.
- Summer (4 July to 30 August 2026): Siófok to Tihany at 9:30, 11:30 and 14:15, with more boats to Balatonfüred.
- Autumn: boats at 10:00, 11:30, 15:00 and 17:00, daily from 7 to 27 September and then only at weekends in October, plus extra autumn-break sailings on 23 to 25 October.
- Last sailings of 2026: on 31 October and 1 November, boats leave Siófok at 10:00 and 14:00 and Tihany at 11:50 and 15:50. Sunday 1 November is the last scheduled sailing of the year. Note the weekday gap at the end of October: there are no scheduled Tihany boats on weekdays such as 28 October, only sightseeing cruises from Siófok.

By car ferry (all year). Outside the boat season, the way across is the Szántód–Tihany car ferry, which runs every day of the year and only stops for extreme weather or ice. Szántódrév is 13 km west of Siófok, so you need a car, a bike or a taxi to reach it. The crossing takes about 8 minutes. Until 1 November the ferry runs every 30 minutes, 7:00 to 19:00 from Szántódrév; from 2 to 22 November it runs 7:00 to 18:00, hourly on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends, and from 23 November to 20 December it stops at 17:00.
| Ferry ticket | Fare (from 1 June 2026) |
|---|---|
| Passenger | 1,000 Ft (about $3.10) |
| Ages 14 to 25 | 500 Ft |
| Under 14, and EU citizens over 65 | Free |
| Car up to 2 t, driver not included | 3,100 Ft (about $9.60) |
| Bicycle | 400 Ft |
| Motorbike | 1,600 Ft |
Without a car, train and bus get you from Siófok to Tihany in a little over two hours with two changes, from 1,390 Ft.

Beyond the Beach
The Water Tower (Víztorony), Fő tér. Siófok’s landmark was built in 1912 and is 41.3 m tall. Its old tank is now a 360° lookout, reached by a panoramic lift, and the tower also holds an exhibition on the sculptor Imre Varga, who was born in Siófok, and one on local history. It is open all year: from 20 October to 28 February daily 10:00 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 16:00, until 18:00 in spring and autumn, and until 18:00 or 19:00 from 15 June to 20 August. An adult ticket is 2,500 Ft (about $7.70), concessions 1,500 Ft, and under-6s and over-70s go free. Tourinform is in the same building, open Monday to Friday 8:00 to 16:30.

Kálmán Imre Memorial House. The operetta composer Imre Kálmán was born in this house on 24 October 1882, and it has been a museum since 1987. From September to mid-June it opens Tuesday to Friday 10:00 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 16:00 and Saturday 10:00 to 14:00; in summer it stays open until 17:00 on weekdays and also opens on Sundays. Tickets are 1,400 Ft, concessions 700 Ft. Entry is free for everyone on his birthday, 24 October, and on 30 October, the anniversary of his death, when those fall on opening days. In 2026 the Kálmán Imre Memorial Days run from 24 to 26 October, with operetta evenings at the town’s cultural center (tickets 3,500 to 6,500 Ft) and a free concert at the Memorial House on 24 October at 16:00.
The Lutheran church by Imre Makovecz. In Oulu park on Fő utca stands one of Hungary’s most striking modern churches, a timber building by the architect Imre Makovecz, consecrated in 1990. The Finnish twin congregation of Oulu supplied the wood, the pews and the altar furnishings. No visiting hours are set, so plan to see it from the outside.
The pier and port. Scheduled boats and sightseeing cruises leave from the port, and the long eastern pier is the town’s favorite walk, with anglers along its length. At its end stands a gilded angel holding a dove, by Pyotr Stronsky, unveiled in 2012. In winter most of Balaton’s passenger fleet is laid up in the harbor, which makes the port worth a stroll even when nothing sails.
Galerius Fürdő. Siófok’s thermal and wellness bath reopened after a 900 million Ft renovation and is open daily 9:00 to 21:00, all year. It is the best rainy-day and off-season plan in town; check prices on its website before you go.

Getting There
By train. Direct InterCity trains leave Budapest-Déli every hour at :35 and reach Siófok at :55, 1 hour 20 minutes later. A full-fare second-class ticket is 2,200 Ft, and the IC seat reservation of 650 Ft is compulsory, so plan on 2,850 Ft (about $8.80) each way. The first train of the day leaves at 05:30. Coming back, ICs leave Siófok every hour at :03 and take about 1 hour 20 minutes. The last direct IC to Budapest leaves at 22:03 and arrives at 23:24; a slower train at 22:05 gets in at 23:54, and after that there is nothing until 04:28. That works for a beach day, but not for a night out, so stay over if you are coming for the clubs. These are autumn timetable times; check the MÁV journey planner for your date.
Train times and fares from the MÁV journey planner, checked 21 October 2026 for 24 and 26 October.
Getting around. The town is long and thin along the shore. Local bus line 1 serves Ezüstpart, and the local buses switch to a reduced timetable from the end of August.
Off-Season: What’s Open
Outside summer, Siófok is a working town by the lake, not a resort. In the town’s own survey of local businesses in April 2026, 28 of 60 said they operate only in the summer high season, and much of Petőfi sétány shuts after August.
Open all year:
- The Water Tower lookout, daily (until 16:00 in winter)
- The Galerius bath, daily 9:00 to 21:00
- The Kálmán Imre Memorial House, Tuesday to Saturday
- The Szántód–Tihany car ferry, daily with shorter winter hours
- Hourly IC trains to and from Budapest
- The theater season at the cultural center, October to April
Closed or finished:
- The paid beaches (the Nagystrand closed on 13 September 2026, Sóstó on 30 August)
- Lifeguards on the free beaches (until 31 August)
- Plázs and Renegade, until next summer
- BAHART’s scheduled boats, after 1 November 2026
A quiet October or November day still works well: ride up the Water Tower, walk the pier and the promenade, take the ferry across to Tihany if you have a car, and end the day at Galerius.
The Verdict
Go to Siófok in June to August if you want a big, easy beach town on Lake Balaton: free beaches for families, the Nagystrand for a full day out, Petőfi sétány for the nights, and the boat to Tihany for a day off. Pick your beach by mood, east or west for calm, the Nagystrand for the crowd. Off-season, it is a pleasant half day rather than a destination: the Water Tower, the pier and the bath. If you want Balaton without the party, Balatonfüred and Tihany across the water are the calmer choices.

Good to know
Is Siófok good for nightlife?
Yes, in summer. Siófok is the party town of Lake Balaton, and the action is on Petőfi sétány, the strip behind the Nagystrand, with Plázs Siófok as the biggest open-air venue. The season runs roughly June to August: by the end of August the venues hold their closing parties, and from September to May the strip is mostly shut. The big summer festivals, STRAND and Balaton Sound, are Zamárdi events, in the next town west, not in Siófok itself.
Which beach in Siófok is free?
Aranypart (Gold Coast), Ezüstpart (Silver Coast), the Orgona utca beach, the Újhelyi beach and the Bimbó utca beach are all free. In 2026 the free beaches had lifeguards from 12 June to 31 August. The Nagystrand and Sóstó beaches are paid. Ezüstpart, east of the center, is flat and calm and the best pick for small children.
How much is the Siófok Nagystrand?
In summer 2026 an adult day ticket was 2,800 Ft in the main season (mid-June to the end of August) and 1,800 Ft in the weeks before and after. Children aged 4 to 14 paid 900 to 1,100 Ft, under-4s went free, and after 17:00 an adult paid 1,100 to 1,600 Ft. The beach runs from late May to mid-September, 08:00 to 19:00.
How do I get from Siófok to Tihany?
In season, take the BAHART boat from Siófok port: 60 to 90 minutes depending on whether it calls at Balatonfüred first, 2,400 Ft one way for an adult. The last scheduled sailing of 2026 is Sunday 1 November. Out of season, drive or cycle 13 km to Szántódrév and take the car ferry to Tihanyrév, which runs every day of the year and takes about 8 minutes: 1,000 Ft per person and 3,100 Ft per car.
How long is the train from Budapest to Siófok?
1 hour 20 minutes on the direct InterCity from Budapest-Déli, which leaves every hour at :35. A ticket costs 2,200 Ft plus a compulsory 650 Ft seat reservation, so 2,850 Ft in total. The last direct IC back leaves Siófok at 22:03 and reaches Déli at 23:24; a slower train at 22:05 arrives at 23:54. These are autumn timetable times.
Is Siófok worth visiting in autumn or winter?
For a quiet day, yes, as long as you expect a calm lakeside town rather than a resort. The beaches and clubs are closed, and many promenade businesses only open in high summer. What stays open: the Water Tower lookout (daily), the Galerius thermal and wellness bath (daily 9:00 to 21:00), the Kálmán Imre Memorial House, the pier and promenade, and the Szántód–Tihany car ferry for a hop across to Tihany.
Is Siófok good for families?
Yes, if you pick the right stretch of shore. The south-shore water stays shallow a long way out, which suits small children. Ezüstpart and the beaches west of the center are calmer than the Nagystrand and Petőfi sétány, where the young crowd and the late-night noise are. Book a place to stay away from the promenade if sleep matters.
