One City, Four Railway Stations, Thirty-Odd Day Trips
From Budapest you can reach a hilltop castle in under an hour, a lake you bathe in all winter in under three, and two other capitals before lunch. Trains and buses fan out from the capital in every direction, so you can sleep in one hotel and still see a lot of the country.
The catch is detail. Four stations serve different lines, the last good train back is often earlier than you expect, and from November a lot of what makes a place worth the trip closes for the season. This page sorts more than thirty day trips by what you want to see, with the station, the travel time, the last useful train home and a winter verdict for each, then links you to the full guide.

A Big City
| Place | What you get | From | Time | Last back | Nov to Mar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Győr and Pannonhalma | Baroque oriel windows, then a UNESCO abbey and its library | Kelenföld, IC; bus 7030 to the abbey | 1 h 12 min + 35 min | 22:56 | Works, abbey Tue to Sat in Nov and Dec, Tue to Sun from 2 Jan |

The eastern Hungary guide covers the Great Plain cities and their baths together.
Caves and Nature

The castle ruin hikes climb forest trails to six ruined castles, 20 to 40 minutes by train to the trailheads. Solymár castle is closed from 1 November, and Vitányvár, from Szárliget, is the best winter pick.
The great cave trip, Aggtelek’s Baradla Cave, is four hours each way by bus, so it needs a night.

Vienna and Bratislava together make a trip of several nights, not a day: the Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest itinerary plans it. Austria runs controls on its land border with Hungary until 15 March 2027, so carry your passport or ID card.

December extras. Hévíz has an Advent market by the lake, Tata has its wild geese, and our Christmas in Hungary guide covers what closes over the holidays.
Not a Day Trip
These are all worth the journey, just not as a return trip in one day.
- Aggtelek: the Baradla Cave runs under the border into Slovakia, but the bus takes about four hours each way, so a day trip is eight hours on the bus for one hour underground.
- Villány: Hungary’s red-wine village is 3 hours 28 minutes away with a change at Pécs, and the last useful train back leaves at 18:22.
- The Zemplén: Füzér Castle and the 723 m pedestrian bridge are 3 hours 15 minutes or more away, and in winter the college tours run on weekdays only.
- Kőszeg: a walled border town 3 hours 4 minutes away with a change, with the last practical train back at 18:32. Pair it with Sopron.
- Gyula: about six hours on trains for the round trip, and from November the castle and museums close at 16:00. One night fits the castle and the castle spa.
Station Cheat-Sheet
| Station | How to get there | Day trips from here |
|---|---|---|
| Keleti | M2, M4 | Eger, Miskolc and Lillafüred, Miskolctapolca, Tokaj, Hortobágy, Lake Tisza, the Zemplén, Gyula, Vienna |
| Nyugati | M3 | Vác, Esztergom, Szeged, Debrecen, Kecskemét (IC), Nyíregyháza, Bratislava, Nagymaros for Visegrád |
| Déli | M2 | Siófok, Balatonfüred, Keszthely, Badacsony, Veszprém, Martonvásár, Velence, Pécs (direct from Déli until 12 December), Villány |
| Kelenföld | M4 | Győr, Sopron and Tata (these times run until 12 December, with track works in Budapest), Kőszeg, Martonvásár, Pécs (the Déli train calls here at :12) and the Etyek bus; until 12 December, boarding a Vienna train here saves about 25 minutes |
| Batthyány tér | M2, HÉV H5 | Szentendre |
| Újpest-Városkapu | M3 | Bus 880 to Visegrád and Lepence |
| Örs vezér tere | M2, HÉV H8 | Gödöllő |
| Stadion coach station | M2 | Hollókő, Aggtelek, the Eger coach |
| Népliget coach station | M3 | Kecskemét coach |
The most common mistake is going to Keleti for an eastern city: Debrecen and Szeged leave from Nyugati. For tickets and seat reservations, see our guide to traveling Hungary by train.
The Verdict
For a first trip, take the HÉV to Szentendre or the train to Esztergom: no booking, no early alarm. For one big day, Eger gives you a castle and a wine valley on a single hourly train. In winter, lean on Esztergom, Vác, Visegrád, Győr and Hévíz, and save the Balaton boats for spring. And whatever you pick, note the last train back before you leave Budapest.

Good to know
What is the best day trip from Budapest in winter?
Esztergom or Vác for the easiest day: trains run every half hour or hourly from Nyugati, and the Basilica and the Memento Mori crypt are indoors. For something bigger, Eger and Győr with the Pannonhalma abbey both work all winter. Hévíz is the one to go for steam rising off a warm lake, but bathing ends at 16:00 until 14 February, so an overnight suits it better. Tata is best from 25 November to 24 December, when tens of thousands of wild geese roost on its lake.
Can you visit another country on a day trip from Budapest?
Yes. Vienna has a direct train from Keleti every hour at :30, from 05:30 to 20:30, about 2 hours 50 minutes, and the last direct train back from Wien Hauptbahnhof leaves at 21:40. Bratislava has a direct train from Nyugati every two hours at :30, 2 hours 25 minutes, and the last direct one back leaves at 20:05. The shortest border crossing of all is at Esztergom, where you walk over the Mária Valéria Bridge into Štúrovo, Slovakia, in about ten minutes.
What is the easiest day trip from Budapest without a car?
Szentendre. The H5 HÉV leaves Batthyány tér every 10 to 20 minutes and takes 39 minutes, so you can go without a timetable. Vác (24 minutes from Nyugati) and Martonvásár (19 to 28 minutes from Kelenföld or Déli) are just as easy, and Esztergom is 65 minutes with two trains an hour.
How far can you go on a day trip from Budapest?
About three hours each way is the limit. Szeged, Pécs, Debrecen, Keszthely, Tokaj and Vienna all sit between two and three hours and make a full, long day if you take a train before 8:00. Beyond three hours, such as Villány, the Zemplén or Kőszeg, you spend more time on the train than in town, so stay the night.
Do trains go from Keleti or Nyugati?
It depends on the line, not on the direction. Keleti serves Eger, Miskolc, Tokaj, Hortobágy, Gyula and Vienna. Nyugati serves Vác, Esztergom, Szeged, Debrecen, Kecskemét and Bratislava. Debrecen is east of Budapest and still leaves from Nyugati, and the station is printed on your ticket.
