Esztergom gives you a Christmas market with the largest church in Hungary standing over it. From Friday 27 November to Sunday 20 December 2026, the Esztergom Advent Fair (Esztergomi Adventi Vásár) fills Széchenyi tér, the main square of the old town, over four weekends, with a craft market, food stalls, outdoor concerts, children’s programs and an ice rink.

The square is a small one, and that is the appeal: you get a market at the scale of a town, not a city, and a short walk away the basilica and the Danube. Esztergom sits right on the Slovak border, so from Štúrovo on the far bank you can simply walk over the bridge.

For the other Advent towns around the country, see the guide to Christmas in Hungary.

Why Esztergom Is Worth an Advent Trip

Esztergom’s fair comes with a skyline: the basilica on Castle Hill, lit up over the rooftops, within walking distance of the stalls. Széchenyi tér itself is the old town’s main square, framed by the town hall and old townhouses, and in 2025 light projections played on the facades of the town hall, the post office and the district court building after dark.

The fair opens on weekends only, Friday to Sunday. Expect handmade gifts from local craftspeople, a wide choice of food and hot drinks, a stage with free concerts, and the ice rink on the square.

What Was on in 2025

The detailed 2026 program, the daily hours and the ice rink prices had not been published by 3 November. The town’s page for the 2025 fair gives a good idea of what to expect:

  • Hours: Fridays 16:00 to 22:00, Saturdays 12:00 to 22:00, Sundays 12:00 to 20:00.
  • Free programs: everything on the stage was free; only the ice rink and a guided Advent history walk were paid.
  • Candle lighting: the town lit the Advent candle on Széchenyi tér every Saturday at 17:00.
  • The stage: children’s choirs and bands in the afternoon, then well-known Hungarian pop and jazz acts in the evening, plus a Mikulás (Saint Nicholas) celebration on 6 December.
  • The history walk: on the last Sunday, a 60-minute walk from the Franciscan church, 4,500 Ft with a hot drink voucher, limited to 20 people per walk.
  • A stamp game: visitors collected four stamps from stalls and the Visit Esztergom hut for a weekly prize draw.

Treat 2025 as a guide, not a promise. Before you pick an evening for a specific concert, look for the 2026 program on visitesztergom.hu.

One dated 2026 event is already listed: an Advent musical gala with four well-known Hungarian musical singers on Sunday 6 December 2026 at 15:00 at the Szent Adalbert Center (Szent István tér 10), tickets 7,900 Ft.

2025 program, hours, prices and stamp game: Visit Esztergom, Esztergom Advent Fair 2025 and the 2025 game rules; the 2026 gala: Visit Esztergom calendar, all read on 3 November 2026.

The Ice Rink

The 2026 fair has an ice rink on Széchenyi tér again. The rink’s Facebook page gives the 2026 season as 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, so it again stays open after the fair closes; its 2026 hours and prices had not been published by 3 November. In 2025 it was more than a weekend attraction:

2025 ice rink Hours or price
Monday to Thursday 16:00 to 20:00
Friday 16:00 to 22:00
Saturday 10:00 to 15:30, 17:30 to 22:00
Sunday 10:00 to 14:30, 16:00 to 20:00
Entry, adults 2,500 Ft
Entry, children aged 6 to 14 1,500 Ft
Skate hire, adults / children 2,000 Ft / 1,500 Ft per session

A ticket was valid from entry until you left the ice, with no time slots. The rink also had holiday hours on 24 and 31 December and was closed on 1 January, so it stayed open after the fair ended. If skating is the plan for a midweek day, check the 2026 hours first.

Pair It With the Basilica

The best Esztergom Advent day starts on Castle Hill and ends on the square. Visit Esztergom describes the basilica as the largest church building in Hungary, 100 meters tall from the crypt to the orb on top of the dome. The church is free to enter and open from 8:00 to 17:00 until the end of the year. It is the dome you want: the view takes in the river, the bridge and Štúrovo on the far bank. The basilica’s hours page lists the dome until 16:30 for October to December 2026, with last tickets at 16:00, but a notice on the same page says that from 1 November 2026 the dome closes at 16:00 and the ticket office and ticket machine sell tickets until 15:00. Buy your dome ticket by 15:00 to be safe. Climb in the early afternoon, walk down through Víziváros, and you reach Széchenyi tér just as it gets dark and the lights take over.

On 24 December only the church opens, until 12:00, and the basilica holds a Midnight Mass that night. The fair has closed by then, on 20 December.

The Esztergom day trip guide covers basilica tickets, the castle museum and the Christian Museum in full.

When to Go

  • Saturday is the fullest day. In 2025 it had the longest hours, the candle lighting at 17:00 and the evening headliners. The four Saturdays in 2026 are 28 November and 5, 12 and 19 December.
  • Friday evening is the calmer choice, if you can get there after work: in 2025 the fair opened at 16:00.
  • Sunday closes earlier, at 20:00 in 2025, which suits a day trip with a train back.
  • Dress for the river. The square is outdoors and the Danube wind is cold in December.

Getting There

From Slovakia. The Mária Valéria Bridge crosses the Danube between Štúrovo and Esztergom, so from the Slovak bank the town is just over the river.

From Budapest by train. Direct trains run from Budapest-Nyugati to Esztergom, and the Esztergom guide lists the departure times and fares. The national timetable changes in mid-December, so for the last two fair weekends check your train in the MÁV journey planner.

Make It a Danube Bend Weekend

Esztergom is one of four Danube Bend towns, and an Advent weekend can take in two of them. Visegrád, with its royal palace and citadel, is the natural pairing; the Danube Bend guide compares the towns and the buses between them. Back in the capital, the big squares are covered in the Budapest Christmas markets guide.

If you are chasing Advent fairs with something extra, the spa town of Hévíz pairs its market with a thermal lake you can bathe in all winter; see the Hévíz Advent guide.

The Verdict

Go to Esztergom for Advent if you want a compact, friendly market with a real view, a free stage and a rink in the middle of the square, and you can come on a weekend. It is an easy add-on to a basilica visit from Budapest, and from southern Slovakia it is a walk over a bridge. Plan for a weekend: the fair itself runs on weekends only.
