Keszthely in a Day: The Short Answer
Yes, and comfortably by train. The 08:35 InterCity from Budapest-Déli is in Keszthely at 11:11, the 18:48 back is in Budapest at 21:24, and that leaves about seven and a half hours for a town built around one of Hungary’s great country houses. Give the middle of the day to the Festetics Palace and its library, add lunch, the palace park and the lake museum or the shore, and you have a full, unhurried day. The one thing to plan is the calendar: from September to May the palace is closed on Mondays.

Seven and a Half Hours, and Where They Go
In the timetable for Tuesday 20 October 2026, the direct InterCity trains to Keszthely leave Budapest-Déli at 35 minutes past every even hour and take 2 hours 36 minutes. Coming back, they leave Keszthely at 48 minutes past every even hour. In between there are trains with one change at Balatonszentgyörgy: from 07:35 to 17:35 they take 2 hours 37 minutes, the 05:30 takes 2 hours 42 and the 19:35 takes 2 hours 44.

The 08:35 out and the 18:48 back are the pair to build the day around. From September to May, when the palace closes at 17:00, the 16:48 is a good alternative if you prefer to be home by 19:24.
The railway station sits at the lake end of town, and the palace is at the northern end of Kastély utca, up through the main square. That makes the lake the near thing when you arrive and the palace the walk into town, a pleasant one along the main street.
Getting There
By train
The direct InterCity runs from Budapest-Déli to Keszthely without a change. For travel on 20 October 2026, the fare was 4,060 Ft (about $13) each way for a full-price adult in second class, the 650 Ft InterCity seat reservation included. By car
The drive follows the M7 towards Lake Balaton and the M76 spur to Keszthely. Both are toll motorways, so buy the e-vignette (e-matrica) before you drive onto them. At the palace, the operator provides free parking for 118 cars at the Hunting Exhibition car park, about 120 meters from the entrance. The Festetics Palace and the Library That Was Walled Up
What is it? The seat of the Festetics family, today officially called the Festetics-kastély, Keszthely. It was built as a Baroque mansion between 1745 and 1750 and given its present form between 1883 and 1887. The aristocratic interior exhibition takes you through more than twenty rooms, most of them with their original furnishings, from the oak staircase with the family portrait gallery to the mirror hall and the chapel.
Why it’s worth it: for the Helikon Library. György Festetics had the library wing built and furnished between 1799 and 1801, with Classicist shelves and a gallery in Slavonian oak. Today the collection holds more than 86,000 items in 30 languages, and the oldest book is Thuróczy’s Chronica Hungarorum of 1488. It is the only aristocratic private library in Hungary that survives with its original collection and furniture, and the reason is a story worth knowing before you walk in: after Soviet troops took Keszthely on 30 March 1945, the town commander, at the request of the family’s staff, had the library and the rooms beside it walled up, and the books came through untouched. The trade-off is the calendar, set out below: from September to May the palace is closed on Mondays.
Insider tip: the operator gives the interior exhibition about 50 minutes and the model railway about 40, so palace plus one exhibition fits easily into a morning or an afternoon. If you choose one exhibition, the historic model railway is a lovely pick for families: more than 2.7 km of track on a 503 m² layout, with 75 trains running at once, which the palace describes as one of the largest in Europe.

Prices change through the year and are higher on event days, so check the current ones on the palace’s official ticket page before you go. Reduced tickets for young and older visitors and the family discount are listed there as well. The exhibitions you can pick are the carriage exhibition, the hunting exhibition, the historic model railway, the aristocratic travels and adventures exhibition, and the bird park.

The ticket office currently closes at 16:30. Special days: 23 October 10:00 to 17:00, 31 December 10:00 to 14:00, 1 January 12:00 to 17:00, and on 20 August 10:00 to 18:00, handy if you are planning around the fireworks and festivals at Balaton on the national holiday.
Before You Go In
The palace’s visitor rules shape the visit more than the clock does, so they are worth knowing at home.
- Bags: backpacks of any size, umbrellas, bags larger than 30 × 30 × 30 cm, food and drinks go into the cloakroom or a locker before the exhibitions. A closed bottle of water up to 0.5 liters may stay with you. The cloakroom and lockers are included in the ticket.
- Children: prams are welcome in the park but not inside the buildings, not even folded. Children under two go in carried in arms or in a front baby carrier.
- Exhibits: objects and painted walls are viewed from at least 30 cm away.
- Guided tours: tours of the palace in English, German or Italian are for groups; book in advance at csoportbejelentes.keszthely@nof.hu.
The Palace Park
The park is one of Hungary’s few historic gardens of international importance, and it is a pleasure in any season. Look for the restored parterre and the small square French garden in front of the south wing, the lake and bridge from Milner’s design, the 1887 Prince of Wales fountain, and a pedunculate oak close to 500 years old. From 1 October to 31 March the park is open 05:00 to 18:00, and from 1 April to 30 September 05:00 to 20:00. It is also the natural plan B on a Monday, when the palace itself is closed.

Winter Evenings: the Festetics Fénypark
The palace closes at 17:00, and at 18:00 its park lights up. From 23 October 2026 to 10 January 2027 the grounds become the Festetics Fénypark: light sculptures and gates, glowing tunnels, scenes from the Festetics family’s story set to music, an illuminated carriage ride, and stalls with hot drinks, food and handmade sweets. The walk takes 40 to 50 minutes at an easy pace, longer if you stop for photos.

The concession covers ages 3 to 17, students with a card, and anyone over 62 or retired, with proof. You don’t book a time slot, the route is step-free, prams and dogs are welcome, and it goes ahead in any weather. The carriage ride and the food are paid for on site.
Getting back to Budapest. Walk in at 18:00 and you can catch the 20:48 direct train, which reaches Budapest-Déli at 23:24, or the 19:48 with one change at Balatonszentgyörgy, in at 22:24. The Balatoni Múzeum
What is it? The lake’s own museum, in a purpose-built building at Múzeum utca 2, with the entrance from Kossuth utca. From the main square it is about a ten-minute walk along Kossuth utca, in the opposite direction from the palace.
Why it’s worth it: it tells the story of Lake Balaton, and it is the right answer to a wet afternoon. The trade-off: it is closed on Sundays as well as Mondays.
The facts: adult 3,000 Ft (about $9), students aged 6 to 26 and visitors aged 62 to 70 1,500 Ft, a 500 Ft service fee included. It opens Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 17:00, all year, and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Tickets are sold until half an hour before closing, and the desk takes cards, cash and SZÉP cards. On 23 October, a national holiday, the exhibitions are free and visitors pay only the 500 Ft service fee.

Hévíz Nearby
Hévíz, with its thermal lake, is close. Buses from Keszthely bus station, a few minutes’ walk from the railway station, reach Hévíz bus station in 10 to 20 minutes, and because many regional routes stop there, a weekday in the 20 October 2026 timetable has several departures most hours of the day. The Beaches in Summer
Keszthely has three beaches run by the town. The Városi strand charges between 8:30 and 19:00, with the cash desk closing at 18:30, and outside those hours you can visit for free; its Balaton-shaped pool is free too. The Libás strand charges between 8:30 and 19:00, with the desk closing at 18:00, and has plenty of free parking nearby. The Helikon strand is free for the 2026 season, with free parking for 140 cars about 10 meters away. Day Trip or Overnight
A day trip fits Keszthely well: the palace with one exhibition, lunch, the park, and the lake museum or a walk to the shore, then the 18:48 home.
Stay the night if you want the five-exhibition ticket or Hévíz as well. Five exhibitions and the bird park make a full day on their own, and the biggest combined ticket includes the Fenékpuszta Manor, which is outside town.
Pick your day with care from September to May: Tuesday to Saturday has both the palace and the Balatoni Múzeum open, and Sunday has the palace only.

Keszthely is an easy, well-connected day trip with a palace that rewards the journey. Take the 08:35 from Déli, buy palace plus one exhibition, give the Helikon Library the time it deserves, and walk the park before the train home. From 1 September to 31 May the Festetics Palace is closed on Mondays, and the Balatoni Múzeum is closed on Sundays and Mondays all year. In June, July and August the palace opens every day. The palace park is open daily either way.
