The Budapest dinner cruise to book for a long, seated meal is Legenda’s Candlelit Dinner Cruise: 2 hours 30 minutes from Dock 7 on Jane Haining rakpart, live music and a four-course à la carte menu for 110 euros, leaving at 19:00 through 31 December. For less money, Silverline’s four-course cruise from Dock 11 starts at 77 euros, and the Gróf Széchenyi’s 90-minute folk dinner cruise from the Akadémia dock costs 45 to 79 euros.

This page covers only the boats that serve a full dinner. For one-hour sightseeing cruises, drinks-only boats and day sailings, see our Danube river cruise guide.

Legenda: the long candlelit dinner

Candlelit Dinner Cruise

What it is: two and a half hours on Legenda’s panorama “bubble boat”, with a welcome drink, live music and an à la carte dinner: you pick each of four courses from the menu rather than eating a set one.

Why book it: this is the cruise for people who care about the meal. The menu runs from scallops, goose liver or beef tartare to trout, rosemary duck breast, beef confit or a cauliflower steak, with panna cotta, cheesecake or a chocolate cake to finish, and it marks the gluten-free and lactose-free dishes. The weakness is the price: 110 euros before a single drink beyond the welcome glass.

Insider tip: the dinner menu suggests a Hungarian wine for each main course, from 15 euros for a Dúzsi rosé to 39 euros for St. Andrea’s Áldás Bikavér. Legenda’s separate on-board drink list shows higher prices for the same wines (18 euros for the Dúzsi rosé, 45 euros for the Oremus Tokaji Mandolás), so confirm the price when you order.

The facts: the Exclusive Dinner Package is 110 EUR; the Kid’s Dinner Package with a three-course children’s menu for ages 3 to 12 is 84 EUR. All other drinks are paid on board. The boat leaves at 19:00, at 19:45 from 20 April to 23 August. On 24 December Legenda’s timetable lists only daytime departures, from 11:00 to 15:30; check the booking calendar before planning a Christmas Eve dinner. Legenda’s pier is Dock 7 on Jane Haining rakpart: from the Vörösmarty tér stop of the yellow M1 metro, walk down to Vigadó tér, cross at the lights and turn left for about 50 meters. Tickets bought in advance can be moved to another date only in person at the pier, not online or by phone.

Early Evening Dinner Cruise

What it is: the shorter version on the same panorama boat: 1 hour 45 minutes, a welcome drink and a three-course set menu: consommé, then beef confit, a mushroom risotto or rosemary duck breast, then panna cotta.

Why book it: it gives you dinner and the lit-up river in under two hours for 65 euros, which suits families and anyone who wants the rest of the evening free. There is no live music listed for this one and no à la carte choice beyond the main course.

The facts: adults 65 EUR, children aged 3 to 12 51 EUR for a three-course kids’ menu. Drinks beyond the welcome drink are paid on board. This cruise does not appear on Legenda’s public timetable, so check the departure time in the booking calendar.

Silverline: four courses at sunset

Dinner & Lights, the four-course cruise

What it is: a sit-down four-course dinner of European-style cooking on a cruise of just over two hours, timed to leave at sunset so you see the city go from daylight to floodlights. Background music plays through dinner; there is no show.

Why book it: it is the cheaper of the two-hour, four-course dinners here, and the route is published. From Dock 11 the boat first heads south to Lágymányosi Bridge, then turns and runs north to Margaret Bridge, so you pass the Parliament, the Chain Bridge, Buda Castle and Matthias Church after dark. The weakness: the starting price moves with the day of the week, so the figure you see on a Saturday may be higher than the headline.

Insider tip: pay the 12 euros for a window seat. On a two-hour dinner you are seated the whole time, and the window is the view.

The facts: from 77 EUR a person, with prices varying by weekday; window seat +12 EUR. Boarding opens 45 minutes before departure, and Silverline asks you to arrive at least 30 minutes early. The menu caters for gluten and lactose intolerance and has vegetarian dishes. Pick the date and time in the booking calendar.

Dinner with Folklore and Operetta Show

What it is: about two hours with a four-course candlelit dinner, a main course of meat, fish or vegetarian, a welcome drink and a live show: a band with violin, double bass and cimbalom, folk dancers in costume and operetta singers. The dancers also teach guests a few steps.

Why book it: for a first night in Hungary it packs the music, the food and the view into one booking, and you get your own table. The weakness is that it is a show, not a quiet dinner for two.

Insider tip: the show runs in a larger room with tables in the middle, and Silverline itself says the view from those is weaker than from the windows. Here the window table costs 25 euros more, and it is the upgrade worth paying for.

The facts: from 91 EUR, with prices varying by time of day and weekday; window table +25 EUR. Bringing your own food and drinks on board is not allowed.

For both Silverline cruises: the pier is Dock 11 on Jane Haining rakpart, next to Elisabeth Bridge on the Pest side; tram 2 stops at Március 15. tér, and Ferenciek tere on the M3 metro is a five-minute walk. Cancellations or changes made more than 24 hours before departure are refunded in full, and within 24 hours nothing is refunded. If you miss the boat, Silverline rebooks you, subject to availability, for 50% of the original price paid on the spot. The boats are not wheelchair accessible.

The Gróf Széchenyi: dinner with the Rajkó Folk Ensemble

Dinner & Cruise with folklore live music and dance show

What it is: a 90-minute cruise on the Gróf Széchenyi, a two-deck paddle-wheel ship run by the Hungária Group, with a four-course served dinner, a welcome glass of Prosecco or juice, and dancers and musicians of the Rajkó Folk Ensemble, cimbalom included.

Why book it: it has the most traditionally Hungarian menu in this guide and the lowest starting price. Every menu opens with eggplant, paprika and pink hummus dips and ends with Somlói sponge cake; in between you choose pork tenderloin after beef goulash soup, chicken paprikash after a tarragon chicken ragout soup, or a vegetarian menu with seasonal vegetable cream soup and pasta marinara. The weakness: at 90 minutes, dinner and show share a short evening, and this cruise has no guide on board.

The facts: tickets from 45 to 79 EUR depending on the ticket type (adult, student, child). Start times 19:00 and 21:30, boarding from 18:30 and 21:00; check in the booking calendar which of the two runs on your date. The ship starts and ends at Akadémia Dock 2, Id. Antall József rakpart, on the Pest bank near the Chain Bridge.

Wine & Dine Cruise

The same ship also runs a tasting version: five Hungarian wines from five regions, each with a matching small dish, a talk on the wines and the Rajkó Orchestra playing, for 119 to 125 EUR. It sails at 19:00 for 90 minutes, boarding from 18:30, in groups of 15. Choose it if you would rather taste than eat a full meal.

What you see from the table

The Széchenyi Chain Bridge lit up at night over the Danube, with the Parliament glowing on the far bank The Chain Bridge and the Parliament lit up after dark, the two sights every dinner route here passes. Photo by Wilfredor, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons.

All three companies sail the city-center stretch between the Pest piers and the bridges, so on every boat you pass the Parliament, the Chain Bridge, Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion. The lights are the reason to book an evening slot: from November to February it is dark well before any dinner boat leaves, while in summer Legenda’s 19:45 start and Silverline’s sunset timing give you daylight on the way out and the floodlit riverfront on the way back.

The seat matters more than the side. Most routes run up and down the river, so both banks pass your table at some point, but a table away from the windows sees the view past other diners. That is why a window seat is the one upgrade worth paying for.

Timing, dress and the evening itself

  • Arrive early. The piers along Jane Haining rakpart are busy in the evening, and lines form at boarding. Silverline opens boarding 45 minutes before departure and asks for 30 minutes; the Gróf Széchenyi boards 30 minutes before. On Silverline, a missed boat means rebooking at a 50% surcharge.
  • Pick the right kind of evening. A folk show with a band is lively, and on a full boat the room gets loud. If you want to talk, book Legenda’s candlelit cruise or Silverline’s four-course cruise with background music, not a show night.
  • Dress: smart casual is fine on every boat; Silverline accepts anything from smart casual to dressed up. Take a layer for a few minutes on deck.
  • Drinks: budget for them. One welcome drink is included everywhere, and wine, beer and soft drinks are ordered and paid on board.
  • Special occasions: Silverline asks you to mention a birthday or anniversary when you book.
  • On land afterwards: the 19:00 sailings are back at 20:30 on the Gróf Széchenyi and at 21:30 on Legenda’s candlelit cruise, early enough for a drink in town. Our riverside restaurants guide covers the places along the river if you would rather eat on land and keep the cruise short.

Which dinner cruise to book

  • A couple, and the food matters: Legenda’s Candlelit Dinner Cruise.
  • A couple on a budget: Silverline’s four-course cruise, with the window seat.
  • A first night with friends or family who want Hungarian music: the Gróf Széchenyi at 45 to 79 euros, or Silverline’s folk and operetta show for a longer evening.
  • Children under 12: Legenda’s Early Evening Dinner Cruise, 1 hour 45 minutes and 51 euros for the kids’ menu.
  • Wine first, food second: the Gróf Széchenyi’s Wine & Dine Cruise.
