March is the month Budapest changes state. February warms by inches; March jumps. The mean daily maximum nearly doubles on the month before it, the average night finally stays above freezing, and the light that reaches the ground goes from 180.7 MJ/m² to 342.0. If February is when the city starts climbing out of winter, March is when it steps out.

The other thing that sets March 2027 apart is the calendar. Most months carry one public holiday or none. This one carries three: 15 March on a Monday, Good Friday on the 26th and Easter Monday on the 29th. Easter Sunday falls on the 28th, and so does the clock change. The school spring break starts the same week. One month, two long weekends, and a last week where almost everything that moves the city happens at once.

The Month the Frost Lets Go

Long-term normal Feb Mar Apr
Mean temperature 2.0 °C 6.6 °C 12.4 °C
Mean daily maximum 5.8 °C 11.3 °C 17.9 °C
Mean daily minimum -1.3 °C 2.3 °C 7.1 °C
Precipitation 33 mm 32 mm 36 mm
Global radiation 180.7 MJ/m² 342.0 MJ/m² 505.9 MJ/m²
Mean wind speed 2.52 m/s 2.72 m/s 2.62 m/s

Temperature and precipitation are the 1991 to 2020 normals; global radiation and wind are 2001 to 2020. All of it comes from the Hungarian weather service’s Budapest Pestszentlőrinc station, and every number is a long-term average rather than a promise about your week.

The night is the number that changes the trip. December, January and February all have a mean daily minimum below zero. March’s is 2.3 °C. On the averages, this is the first month since November where the night does not freeze, which is what lets a walk home after dinner stop being a logistics problem.

The afternoon nearly doubles. 5.8 °C to 11.3 °C is a jump of 5.5 °C in the mean daily maximum, against 2.8 °C from January to February. That is where the climb steepens. April adds another 6.6 °C on top, so March sits right in the middle of the fastest warming stretch of the year.

Close to double the light. Global radiation goes from 180.7 to 342.0 MJ/m², up 89 percent on the monthly total and about 71 percent per day once the extra three days are accounted for. Radiation is energy reaching the ground, not hours of sunshine, but this is the month the city stops looking gray at noon.

And it is the windiest month of the year. The weather service puts Budapest’s annual mean wind at 2.36 m/s and names March as the peak at 2.72 m/s. A day at 11 °C with that much moving air feels colder than 11 °C. The shell you brought for February still has a job. At 32 mm, March sits in the January to March window the weather service calls the least rainy part of the year, so the wind is the weather to plan around, not the rain.

An Hour and Three Quarters More Daylight, and Then the Clock Moves

Date Sunrise Sunset Civil twilight ends Daylight
Mon 1 Mar 06:25 17:28 17:59 11 h 03 m
Mon 15 Mar 05:58 17:49 18:19 11 h 51 m
Sat 27 Mar 05:33 18:06 18:37 12 h 33 m
Sun 28 Mar 06:31 19:07 19:38 12 h 36 m
Wed 31 Mar 06:25 19:12 19:43 12 h 47 m

March hands back 1 hour 44 minutes of daylight, from 11 h 03 m to 12 h 47 m. The day passes twelve hours on Thursday 18 March.

Then the clocks go forward on Easter Sunday. Hungarian government decree 39/1996 starts summer time on the last Sunday of March, and in 2027 that is the 28th, which is also Easter Sunday. At 02:00 the clocks jump to 03:00. Sunset goes from 18:06 on Saturday to 19:07 on Sunday, and sunrise from 05:33 to 06:31. Overnight, an hour of morning light becomes an hour of evening light.

Two practical results. Easter Sunday is an hour shorter, which matters if you have a train, a flight or the 11:00 Parsifal that morning. And from the 28th the evenings change character: light until after seven, civil twilight to 19:43 by the 31st, and a whole extra slot after the baths or the museums before dinner.

Three Holidays, Two Long Weekends

The Hungarian labor code lists 15 March, Good Friday and Easter Monday among the statutory public holidays. In 2027 they fall like this:

Date Day What it is
15 March 2027 Monday Nemzeti ünnep, the national holiday for the 1848 revolution
26 March 2027 Friday Nagypéntek, Good Friday
28 March 2027 Sunday Húsvét, Easter Sunday. Clocks forward
29 March 2027 Monday Húsvéthétfő, Easter Monday

That gives a three-day weekend from Saturday 13 to Monday 15 March, and a four-day one from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Hungarian schools add their own layer: the decree for the 2026/2027 school year puts the last school day before the spring break on Wednesday 24 March and the first day back on Monday 5 April. From the 25th, families are free for eleven days, and the Easter weekend sits inside that.

15 March is a Monday, and that doubles the closures. Mondays already shut a lot of culture here. The Hungarian National Museum keeps a standing rule of Monday closed, and its holiday-hours page has nothing for 2027 yet. The Opera has one event that day, the Ybl 213 aria recital at 19:00. The state commemoration program for 2027 is not published yet, so confirm times nearer the date. Our public holidays guide covers the usual pattern around Kossuth Lajos tér and what shops and transport do on a holiday.

Easter Monday repeats the pattern. 29 March is also a Monday: museums on their Monday rule, Opera dark. Good Friday is the opposite case, a Friday holiday with the Opera running Parsifal at 17:00.

The Baths on the Three Holidays

The hours below are each operator’s standing schedule, with no separate March timetable, and Széchenyi and Rudas both switch to weekend hours on public holidays.

Bath March, on the standing rules
Széchenyi Open every day of the year. 07:00 to 20:00 Monday to Thursday, to 22:00 on Friday, 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends. Public holidays run on weekend hours, so 08:00 to 20:00 on 15, 26 and 29 March. Pools and saunas clear 20 minutes before closing. Published exceptions stop at 6 January 2027
Rudas Wellness 06:00 to 22:00 on Monday, 06:00 to 20:00 Tuesday to Sunday. Public holidays run on weekend hours. Night bathing Friday and Saturday, 22:00 to 03:00, online tickets only. No entry under 14
Lukács 07:00 to 19:00 daily, Tuesday to 22:00. Sauna world from 14:00 on weekdays, full hours at weekends and on holidays
Gellért Closed since 1 October 2025, with reopening expected in 2028

The Rudas Monday trap. Monday is the one day Rudas keeps its wellness area open until 22:00. Its holiday rule switches to weekend hours, which close at 20:00. Two of March’s three holidays are Mondays, so on 15 and 29 March the late Monday session is not one to count on.

Lukács works the other way. Its sauna world normally opens at 14:00 on weekdays, but runs full hours on holidays, so a holiday Monday or Good Friday gets the whole day.

For a night soak over Easter, Rudas runs night bathing every Friday and Saturday on its standing rule. Nothing specific is published for Good Friday, so Saturday 27 March is the night no holiday rule can touch. The clocks jump from 02:00 to 03:00 during that session, so it lasts four hours instead of five.

Two details that cost people a session in any month: at Rudas and Széchenyi the cash desks close an hour before the bath does, and pools clear 20 minutes before closing, so a 20:00 close means a 19:00 last ticket. The Rudas night session and the Lukács guide have the detail.

The Opera Builds Up to Easter

The Hungarian State Opera has published its March 2027 program: 36 listed performances across 23 days, not counting school matinees and building tours. Three threads stand out.

A Passion story told backward. Passion, an opera-oratorio by Máté Bella with a libretto by András Almási-Tóth, premieres at the Opera House on Sunday 21 March at 19:00, with further performances on the 25th at 19:00 and Saturday the 27th at 11:00. The Opera describes it as based on the four Gospels and told in reverse, from the death of Jesus back to the Last Supper, scored for a small ensemble of strings, harp and piano. It is the first time the Opera House has staged a work by this composer.

Parsifal for Easter. Wagner’s Parsifal runs as a concert performance on Good Friday at 17:00 and Easter Sunday at 11:00. The Opera notes that it is played with the safety curtain lowered for the acoustics. It runs 285 minutes, so the Good Friday performance is your evening and the Sunday one is your day, on the morning the clocks have just gone forward.

A Hungarian evening on the national holiday. Ybl 213, a recital of Hungarian opera arias held in memory of Miklós Ybl, the architect of the Opera House, is on Monday 15 March at 19:00.

Production Published March 2027 dates

The Opera is dark on Mondays 1, 8, 22 and 29 March and on 2, 3, 23 and 24 March. Our Opera House guide covers the building and the tours.

Low Season Is Ending, and the Data Shows It

Hungarian hotels, national Feb 2026 Mar 2026 Apr 2026
Room occupancy 51.2% 51.6% 55.2%
Gross average room rate HUF 30,959 HUF 32,146 HUF 38,027
Gross RevPAR HUF 15,856 HUF 16,572 HUF 21,010

March 2026 looked like February with a little more on top: occupancy up 0.4 points, the average room rate up 3.8 percent. April was the jump, 18.3 percent dearer than March. Budapest took 44 percent of the month’s hotel guest nights in Hungary, 745,000 of them, and the largest foreign markets nationally were Germany, the United Kingdom, Czechia, Italy and Austria.

Read those numbers with one caveat. Easter 2026 fell on 5 April, so the 2026 figures describe a March without Easter and an April with it. In 2027 Easter, the clock change and the start of the school break all land in March. The first three weeks of March 2027 match the 2026 pattern; the last week is the one that behaves like April. The cost guide has the rest of the arithmetic.

Who Should Not Come in March

  • Anyone who hates wind. March is the windiest month of the year here, 2.72 m/s on the long-term average. Pack a shell, not just a coat.
  • Anyone planning museums for 15 or 29 March. Both holidays are Mondays, and Monday is closing day at the National Museum. The Opera is dark on the 29th and has a single recital on the 15th.
  • Anyone wanting a quiet, cheap Easter week. From 25 March schools are out, then come Good Friday, Easter and Easter Monday. Expect it to be the busiest stretch of the month.
  • Anyone with an early flight on 28 March. The clocks go forward at 02:00 that morning. Check the time your phone shows against your booking.
  • Anyone counting on Rudas’s late Monday. On 15 and 29 March the holiday rule puts it on weekend hours, closing at 20:00.

The Month Either Side

Behind you: February is 5.5 °C colder in the afternoon on the averages, its nights still drop below freezing, and it gets 180.7 MJ/m² of light against March’s 342.0. It has no public holiday at all, so every bath grid reads exactly as published, and the national room rate in February 2026 was HUF 30,959, close to March’s. If the point of the trip is the warm water against cold air, February is the better month for it.

Ahead of you: April is another step up. On the long-term averages the mean daily maximum is 17.9 °C, the mean daily minimum 7.1 °C, rain 36 mm and global radiation 505.9 MJ/m², about half again on March. The wind drops a little, to 2.62 m/s. The school break runs into the first week, to 4 April 2027, and the national average room rate in April 2026 was HUF 38,027. Our month by month guide sets the whole year side by side.

The Verdict

March is the month to come for the turn of the season, on the condition that you pick your half.

The first three weeks give you nights above freezing on the averages, the light nearly doubled on February, a day that passes twelve hours on the 18th, hotel rates in 2026 close to February’s, and an Opera calendar running László Hunyadi, a Liszt and Debussy premiere and a contemporary ballet bill. The one holiday in that stretch, Monday 15 March, makes a three-day weekend, lands on a museum Monday and moves Rudas to weekend hours.

The last week is a different trip: schools out from the 25th, Good Friday, Parsifal, the clock change on Easter Sunday morning, Easter Monday. Come for it on purpose, book early, and plan around the Monday closures.

Either way, pack for wind. That is the part of March the thermometer does not show.

Good to know

What is the weather like in Budapest in March?

Cool, brightening fast, and windy. Averaged over 1991 to 2020 at the Hungarian weather service's Budapest Pestszentlőrinc station, March's mean temperature is 6.6 °C, its mean daily maximum 11.3 °C, its mean daily minimum 2.3 °C and its precipitation 32 mm. Those are thirty-year averages, not a forecast for your week. Over 2001 to 2020, global radiation reaches 342.0 MJ/m², close to double February's 180.7, and mean wind speed is 2.72 m/s, the highest of the twelve months. March is the first month since November whose average night stays above freezing, and the wind is the reason it still feels colder than the thermometer says.

Is 15 March a holiday in Budapest, and what closes?

Yes. 15 March, the anniversary of the 1848 revolution, is a statutory public holiday under the Hungarian labor code, and in 2027 it falls on a Monday, which turns 13 to 15 March into a three-day weekend. State commemorations are part of the day; the 2027 program has not been published yet. Mondays already close a lot of the culture side of the city: the Hungarian National Museum's standing rule is closed on Mondays and it has published no holiday hours for 2027, and the Opera has only one event that day, a Hungarian aria recital at 19:00. The baths stay open, and Széchenyi and Rudas switch to weekend hours on public holidays.

When is Easter in Budapest in 2027?

Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027. Good Friday, 26 March, and Easter Monday, 29 March, are both public holidays in Hungary, so the city has a four-day weekend from Friday to Monday. The same Sunday is the start of summer time: clocks go from 02:00 to 03:00, so Easter Sunday morning is an hour shorter. The Opera marks the weekend with Wagner's Parsifal in a concert version on Good Friday at 17:00 and Easter Sunday at 11:00, and a new opera-oratorio, Passion, runs on 21, 25 and 27 March.

How much daylight does Budapest get in March?

From 11 hours 3 minutes on 1 March 2027 to 12 hours 47 minutes on the 31st, a gain of 1 hour 44 minutes. Sunrise moves from 06:25 to 05:33 on Saturday 27 March, then the clock change sends it back to 06:31 on Sunday the 28th. Sunset moves from 17:28 on the 1st to 18:06 on the 27th and 19:07 on the 28th. The first day longer than twelve hours is Thursday 18 March.

Is March a good time to visit Budapest?

The first half is, if you pack for wind. Days average 11.3 °C, nights stay above freezing on average, the light nearly doubles on February, and the national average hotel room rate in March 2026 was HUF 32,146, close to February's HUF 30,959 and well under April's HUF 38,027. The last week is a different trip: Good Friday, Easter, Easter Monday, the clock change and the school spring break all fall between 24 and 31 March 2027. Book that week early or avoid it.
