April is the month Budapest changes its mind about the season, and it warms up faster than in any other month. On the Hungarian weather service’s long-term averages the mean daily maximum goes from 11.3 °C in March to 17.9 °C in April, a 6.6 °C jump in thirty days. No other monthly rise in the Budapest year is that large.
The first thing to fix before you book, though, is the calendar. There is no Easter in April 2027. Western Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, Easter Monday on the 29th, and Orthodox Easter on 2 May. If you saw last year’s Easter weekend in early April and assumed the same, the holiday has moved out of the month entirely, and so have the long weekend, the closures and the crowd.
What is left is a month with no statutory public holiday, a school break that ends on the 4th, the driest weather between April and December on the thirty-year record, and a hotel market that in 2026 charged a quarter less for a room than in May. The rest of this page is the detail.

The April 2027 Calendar, in Date Order
A short list, because the month has no holiday to hang anything on. The third column says how firm each line is.
| Dates | What | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 1 to Sun 4 Apr | Last four days of the Hungarian school spring break | Fixed by ministerial decree |
| Mon 5 Apr | Schools back. The first of four museum Mondays | Decree plus standing museum rules |
| Sat 10 Apr | Vivicittá Saturday: 3 x 2 km fun relay, 2.4 km Minicittá, 7 km Midicittá | Published 2027 date |
| Sun 11 Apr | Vivicittá Spring Half Marathon, plus the 10 km race and relays, starting and finishing on Margaret Island | Published 2027 date |
| Mon 5, 12, 19, 26 Apr | Hungarian National Museum and Museum of Ethnography closed | Standing rule |
| Fri 30 Apr | Last teaching day for final-year secondary students, and ballagás season | Fixed by ministerial decree |
| Sat 1 May | Labour Day, a statutory holiday, falling on a Saturday | Fixed by law |

Easter Is in March This Year, and That Changes the Whole Month
| Date | Day | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| 26 March 2027 | Friday | Good Friday, a statutory holiday |
| 28 March 2027 | Sunday | Easter Sunday. The clocks go forward the same morning |
| 29 March 2027 | Monday | Easter Monday, a statutory holiday |
| 2 May 2027 | Sunday | Orthodox Easter |
| 16 April 2028 | Sunday | Easter Sunday the year after, back inside April |
Those are calendar computations, and they matter more than any event on the list above. Easter in Hungary brings a four-day weekend with two statutory holidays in it, bath holiday hours, shop closures and a domestic travel rush. In 2026 all of that landed on 3 to 6 April. In 2027 it lands on 26 to 29 March, which leaves April with none of it.
That cuts both ways. If Easter was the reason for the trip, the trip is now a late March one, and our Easter in Budapest guide covers that weekend. If you simply wanted a spring city break and the holiday was in the way, April 2027 is unusually clean: thirty days with no holiday rule firing anywhere. Orthodox Easter on 2 May sits just past the end of the month and is not a public holiday in Hungary.
The Biggest Warm-Up of the Year
| Long-term normal | Mar | Apr | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean temperature | 6.6 °C | 12.4 °C | 16.9 °C |
| Mean daily maximum | 11.3 °C | 17.9 °C | 22.6 °C |
| Mean daily minimum | 2.3 °C | 7.1 °C | 11.6 °C |
| Precipitation | 32 mm | 36 mm | 67 mm |
| Global radiation | 342.0 MJ/m² | 505.9 MJ/m² | 623.1 MJ/m² |
| Mean wind speed | 2.72 m/s | 2.62 m/s | 2.51 m/s |
Two reference periods sit in that table. Temperature and precipitation are the 1991 to 2020 normals, global radiation and mean wind speed are 2001 to 2020, and all of it comes from the Hungarian weather service’s Budapest Pestszentlőrinc station. Every figure is a long-term average, not a statement about the week you booked.
The jump is the headline. The mean daily maximum rises 6.6 °C from March to April, the mean daily minimum 4.8 °C and the monthly mean 5.8 °C. Run the same subtraction for every rise from one month to the next and none is larger on the afternoon figure: February to March is 5.5 °C, April to May 4.7 °C. That is why April has a reputation for being unpredictable. A month that is moving this fast on average leaves a lot of room between its first week and its last.
Dry. April’s 36 mm is the lowest precipitation of any month from April through December. The only drier months in Budapest are January, February and March, the stretch the weather service itself names as the city’s least rainy. May then nearly doubles it to 67 mm. “April showers” is a figure of speech here, not a statistic.
Bright, but the wind has not finished. Global radiation climbs to 505.9 MJ/m², 48 percent more than March and roughly twice October’s 258.6. Mean wind speed, on the other hand, is still 2.62 m/s. March is the windiest month of the year at 2.72 and April comes second. A 17 °C afternoon with that much air moving feels cooler on a bridge or on the Danube embankment than it does in a sheltered courtyard.
The October comparison. April nights average 7.1 °C and October nights 7.2 °C, effectively the same. April takes the afternoon by 1.5 °C, is 9 mm drier and gets nearly twice the light. October is the calmer month, 2.12 m/s against 2.62. Our October guide makes the case from the other side.
What to Wear in April
The averages give you a simple rule: dress for two seasons in one day.
- A spread of almost 11 °C. The mean daily maximum is 17.9 °C and the mean daily minimum 7.1 °C. A morning start and a late dinner outdoors are different climates. Layers beat one heavy coat.
- Something windproof. Second windiest month of the year. A light shell over a sweater handles both the wind and the occasional shower.
- A small umbrella, not a raincoat. At 36 mm, April is dry by Budapest standards. The umbrella is insurance, not the plan.
- Shoes for a lot of walking. With more than thirteen hours of daylight for most of the month, you will cover more ground than on a winter trip. The cobbles of the Castle District and the long riverside walks punish thin soles.
- Swimwear and flip-flops. The outdoor thermal pools are the point in this weather, and the walk between pools in 10 °C morning air is cold, so keep a towel or robe close.
More Than an Hour and a Half of Light Comes Back
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Civil twilight ends | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thu 1 Apr | 06:23 | 19:13 | 19:44 | 12 h 49 m |
| Thu 15 Apr | 05:56 | 19:32 | 20:05 | 13 h 36 m |
| Fri 30 Apr | 05:29 | 19:53 | 20:28 | 14 h 24 m |
April is the first full month on summer time. Hungary’s clocks went forward on 28 March 2027, so every evening in April sits an hour later on the clock than it would have in early March, and on the 1st the sun is already setting after seven.
The gain across the month is more than an hour and a half, and the morning takes the larger share: sunrise moves 54 minutes earlier, sunset about 40 minutes later. By the end of the month sunrise is just before half past five. That is useful for one specific reason. Rudas opens at 06:00, and in the last week of April that first session starts in daylight, where on the 1st the sun is not up until 06:23.
At the other end, civil twilight on 30 April ends at 20:28. That is the window after sunset when it is still light enough to walk without streetlights, and it is what makes a riverside walk after an early dinner possible in late April in a way it is not at the start of the month.
Vivicittá Weekend and Margaret Island
The one large fixed event of April 2027 is the Telekom Vivicittá Spring Half Marathon on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 April. The organizer has published the dates and the format. Saturday is the short-distance day: a 3 x 2 km fun relay, the 2.4 km Minicittá and the 7 km Midicittá. Sunday carries the half marathon, the half marathon relays for two and three, and the 10 km race, with the half marathon starting first and the 10 km in the afternoon. Start and finish are on Margaret Island, and the course crosses several Danube bridges with views of the Castle and Parliament. Entries close on 1 April.
What that means for a visitor who is not running. Margaret Island is busy on both days, and Sunday is the day the race is out on the roads and bridges. If you have a Sunday morning airport run or a river cruise booked, check the race-day closures first and leave slack. For runners, Palatinus sits on the same island, which is about as convenient as a post-race soak gets.
On any other April day the island is the easiest green escape in the city. Our Margaret Island guide covers the walking loop, the Japanese Garden and the ruins.
The Baths in April
No public holiday falls in April 2027, so none of the operators’ holiday rules fires. Széchenyi and Rudas switch to weekend hours on public holidays, Lukács runs its sauna world on full hours. In April that never happens. The published weekly grid is the grid on every day of the month.
| Bath | April |
|---|---|
| Széchenyi | Open every day of the year. Bath 07:00 to 20:00 Monday to Thursday, to 22:00 on Friday, 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends. Pools and saunas close 20 minutes earlier. Outdoor thermal pool 36 to 38 °C, swimming pool 26 to 28 °C |
| Rudas | Wellness 06:00 to 20:00 Tuesday to Sunday and to 22:00 on Monday. Night bathing Friday and Saturday, 22:00 to 03:00, online tickets only. Turkish bath women only on Tuesday, men only all Wednesday and on Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings, co-ed at weekends and from 11:00 on Monday, Thursday and Friday. No entry under 14 |
| Lukács | 07:00 to 19:00, Tuesday to 22:00. Sauna world from 14:00 on weekdays, full hours at weekends |
| Palatinus | Currently daily 09:00 to 16:00. The 2027 outdoor season has not been published |
| Gellért | Closed since 1 October 2025, with reopening expected in 2028 |
| Király | Closed indefinitely |
That table is the standing rule, not an April 2027 publication. Each operator publishes its exceptions one date at a time, and none of those lists reaches April yet. A bath that schedules a maintenance closure for spring will announce it closer to the date.
Two details that change your day. Cash desks close an hour before the bath does and the pools have to be cleared twenty minutes before closing, so a 20:00 close means a 19:00 last ticket and a 19:40 last swim. And the water to air gap, stated as the average it is: April’s mean daily maximum is 17.9 °C against an outdoor thermal pool at 36 to 38 °C, a gap of around twenty degrees. Smaller than in winter, still plenty. On an April morning, with the air near 7 °C, the steam is back. The Széchenyi guide has the layout, and the Rudas night session is the one to book for a Friday or Saturday.
What Is Open on Holidays in April
Short answer: there are no holidays to plan around. The Hungarian labour code lists the statutory public holidays, and in 2027 the Easter pair, Good Friday and Easter Monday, both fall in March. April contains none, and the next one is Labour Day on Saturday 1 May.
Three things still shape the calendar.
The school spring break ends on Sunday 4 April. The ministerial decree on the 2026/2027 school year puts the last teaching day before the break on 24 March and the first one after it on Monday 5 April. The first four days of April are the tail of the break, with Hungarian families still travelling and city sights busier. From the 5th, schools are in.
Four Mondays, four museum closures. April’s Mondays are the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th, and the Hungarian National Museum and the Museum of Ethnography close on Mondays as standing policy. Széchenyi, Rudas and Lukács are all open on Mondays, and Rudas runs to 22:00 because Monday is its late night. An April Monday is a bath day, not a museum day. The museums guide has the rest of the week.
Friday 30 April is the last teaching day for final-year secondary students. Ballagás, the farewell ceremony Hungarian schools hold for their leavers, clusters around it, so expect school courtyards full of families with flowers on the last days of the month. Nothing closes for it.
The public holidays guide covers the rest of the year, where the closures are real.
April or May?
Here is the choice on the numbers.
| April | May | |
|---|---|---|
| Mean daily maximum | 17.9 °C | 22.6 °C |
| Mean daily minimum | 7.1 °C | 11.6 °C |
| Precipitation | 36 mm | 67 mm |
| Global radiation | 505.9 MJ/m² | 623.1 MJ/m² |
| Daylight on the last day | 14 h 24 m | 15 h 40 m |
| Statutory holidays in 2027 | None | Sat 1 May, Mon 17 May (Whit Monday) |
| Budapest hotel occupancy, 2026 | 71.6% | 77.1% |
| Budapest average room rate, 2026 | HUF 42,293 | HUF 57,383 |
May is warmer, and that is most of its argument. Afternoons average 4.7 °C more and nights 4.5 °C more. If the trip depends on sitting outside after dark, May is the safer bet.
April is drier, cheaper and emptier of holidays. May’s 67 mm is nearly twice April’s 36. Budapest’s average room rate in May 2026 was 36 percent higher than in April 2026, with occupancy 5.5 points higher. And May 2027 has two statutory holidays plus Orthodox Easter, where April has none.
The short version: book April for value and walking weather, May for warmth. If you can choose the week, the last week of April runs past fourteen hours of daylight at April prices. Our May guide has the May calendar in full.
The Hotel Numbers, and Why Last April Is a Tricky Guide
| Budapest hotels | Apr 2026 | May 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Room occupancy | 71.6% | 77.1% |
| Gross average room rate | HUF 42,293 | HUF 57,383 |
| Gross RevPAR | HUF 30,266 | HUF 44,220 |
These are last season’s records from the MSZÉSZ hotel trend report, and one thing about them matters for 2027. April 2026 had Easter in it, on 5 April, and Orthodox Easter on the 12th. April 2027 has neither. Even with Easter, Budapest’s April 2026 room rate was 10.6 percent lower than in April 2025 and occupancy 1.8 points lower, so April was already getting cheaper year on year before the holiday moved out.
Nationally the picture is the same at lower levels: 55.2 percent occupancy and an average rate of HUF 38,027 in April 2026, against 60.2 percent and HUF 44,227 in May. The cost guide does the rest of the arithmetic, and the month by month guide sets April against the other eleven.
Who Should Pick Another Month
- Anyone booking an Easter trip. Easter 2027 is 28 March. In April there is no Easter Monday and no holiday weekend.
- Anyone who wants warm evenings outdoors. The mean daily minimum is 7.1 °C, and you will want the jacket after sunset. May is 4.5 °C warmer at night.
- Anyone counting on the summer lidos. Palatinus currently runs on reduced hours and has not published its 2027 outdoor season.
- Anyone planning museums for a Monday. Four Mondays, four closures at the National Museum and the Museum of Ethnography.
- Anyone who hates wind. Second windiest month of the year. The bridges and the embankment feel it most.
The Month Either Side
Behind you: March is the windiest month of the year at 2.72 m/s, its mean daily maximum is 11.3 °C, and in 2027 it carries both the 15 March national holiday and the whole Easter weekend, plus the clock change on the 28th.
Ahead of you: May is warmer by 4.7 °C in the afternoon, nearly twice as wet, and on last year’s figures 36 percent dearer per hotel room. It opens with Labour Day on a Saturday and Orthodox Easter on the Sunday.
The Verdict
April 2027 is the month to come for long walks, cheap rooms by spring standards, outdoor thermal pools in mild air and more than thirteen hours of daylight, and the wrong month to come if the trip is built around Easter or warm nights.
The case is four numbers and one correction. A 6.6 °C jump in the afternoon average, the biggest monthly rise of the year. 36 mm of precipitation, lower than any month from May to December. Fourteen hours of daylight passed by the last week. A Budapest room rate in April 2026 roughly a quarter below May’s. And the correction: Easter is not in April this year.
Two decisions matter. Pick your week. The first four days are the end of the school break, the 10th and 11th are the Vivicittá weekend, and the last ten days are the longest and lightest of the month. And keep museums off Mondays.

Good to know
What is the weather like in Budapest in April?
Mild by day, cool at night, dry, and windy. Averaged over 1991 to 2020 at the Hungarian weather service's Budapest Pestszentlőrinc station, April's mean temperature is 12.4 °C, its mean daily maximum 17.9 °C, its mean daily minimum 7.1 °C and its precipitation 36 mm. Those are thirty-year averages, not a forecast for your week. The rise from March is the largest monthly rise of the year: the mean daily maximum climbs 6.6 °C in one month. Over 2001 to 2020, global radiation reaches 505.9 MJ/m², 48 percent more than March, and mean wind speed is 2.62 m/s, which makes April the second windiest month of the year after March. Pack for a gap of almost 11 °C between the afternoon and the hour before dawn, and bring a windproof layer.
Is Easter in April in 2027?
No. Western Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, with Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March, all three in March. Orthodox Easter 2027 is on 2 May. April 2027 therefore contains neither Easter. In 2026 Easter fell on 5 April and in 2028 it falls on 16 April, so the date moves from year to year. If an Easter trip is the plan, it is a late March trip in 2027, and our Easter in Budapest guide covers that weekend. The same weekend also carries the clock change: Hungary moves to summer time in the early hours of Sunday 28 March 2027.
Is it better to visit Budapest in April or May?
April if you want lower prices, drier days and an empty holiday calendar; May if you want warmth. On the 1991 to 2020 averages May's mean daily maximum is 22.6 °C against April's 17.9 °C and its mean daily minimum 11.6 °C against 7.1 °C. But May brings 67 mm of precipitation to April's 36 mm, nearly twice as much. On price, Budapest hotels averaged HUF 42,293 a room in April 2026 and HUF 57,383 in May 2026, so the May rate was 36 percent higher, at 77.1 percent occupancy against April's 71.6. May 2027 also has two statutory holidays, Labour Day on Saturday 1 May and Whit Monday on 17 May, while April 2027 has none.
Are the Budapest thermal baths open in April?
Yes, and with no public holiday in April 2027 the standing weekly hours apply on every day of the month. On the operators' current published schedules, Széchenyi is open every day of the year, 07:00 to 20:00 Monday to Thursday, to 22:00 on Friday and 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends, with its outdoor thermal pool at 36 to 38 °C. Rudas runs 06:00 to 20:00 Tuesday to Sunday and to 22:00 on Monday, with night bathing on Friday and Saturday from 22:00 to 03:00, online tickets only and no entry under 14. Lukács opens 07:00 to 19:00, with Tuesday running to 22:00. Palatinus currently opens daily 09:00 to 16:00 and has not published its 2027 outdoor season. Gellért has been closed since 1 October 2025 with reopening expected in 2028, and Király is closed indefinitely.
How much daylight does Budapest get in April?
It starts at 12 hours 49 minutes on 1 April 2027 and ends at 14 hours 24 minutes on the 30th, a gain of more than an hour and a half. Sunrise moves from 06:23 to 05:29 and sunset from 19:13 to 19:53, so the morning takes the bigger share. Civil twilight, the stretch after sunset when there is still enough light to be outdoors without streetlights, ends at 19:44 on the 1st and at 20:28 on the 30th. April is the first full month on summer time, because Hungary's clocks went forward on 28 March 2027.
Is April a good time to visit Budapest?
Yes, and on the numbers it is one of the better value months of the year. The case for it: the mean daily maximum reaches 17.9 °C, precipitation is 36 mm, lower than any month from April to December, daylight passes fourteen hours by the end of the month, and there is no public holiday or Easter crowd in it. Budapest's average hotel room rate in April 2026 was HUF 42,293, against HUF 57,383 in May. The case against it: the mean daily minimum is still 7.1 °C, April is the second windiest month of the year, and outdoor summer venues and seasonal pools are mostly still to open. The first four days fall inside the Hungarian school spring break, so the quietest stretch is from Monday 5 April.
