Budapest in February: The Carnival Is Over by the 9th and the Light Is Back by the 28th

February is the month the Budapest year stops losing and starts winning, and the number that proves it is not on the thermometer. Global radiation, the weather service’s measure of the energy arriving at the ground, goes from 107.5 MJ/m² in January to 180.7 in February, a 68 percent jump on the monthly total and roughly 86 percent per day once you account for the shorter month. The service’s own text puts the year’s radiation minimum in the November to January window at 85 to 130 MJ/m² a month. February is the first month of the Budapest year that sits outside that trough entirely.

The other thing worth fixing before anyone books: February is not the carnival month. Farsang ends at Húshagyókedd on Tuesday 9 February 2027, Ash Wednesday lands on the 10th, and the remaining nineteen days of the month are Lent. Nine days of carnival, then three weeks of the opposite. Every guide that sells February as a season of balls and doughnuts is describing its first week and calling it a month.

And there is a third thing, quieter and more useful than either. February 2027 contains no statutory public holiday and no school break. Every bath in this city has a different holiday rule, and this is the month where not one of them fires. The published weekly grid is simply the grid, which is the exact inverse of the puzzle January sets on New Year’s Day.

The Month the Light Climbs Out of the Trough

Two reference periods sit in that table and they are not the same. Temperature and precipitation are the 1991 to 2020 normals. Global radiation and mean wind speed are 2001 to 2020. Both come from the Hungarian weather service’s Budapest Pestszentlőrinc station, and every figure in the column is a thirty-year or twenty-year average rather than a statement about the week you booked.

The light is the whole story and it is a large number. 107.5 to 180.7 MJ/m² is a 68 percent rise on the monthly total, and because February is three days shorter than January the per-day rise is bigger still, 3.47 to 6.45 MJ/m² a day, about 86 percent. The weather service names the annual radiation minimum as the November to January window, 85 to 130 MJ/m² a month. February clears the top of that range by fifty. Note what this is and is not: global radiation is energy reaching the ground, not hours of sunshine, and February at 180.7 still sits at barely half of March’s 342.0. Brighter than any other month of the winter, yes. Sunny, no.

Warmer on the averages, and the frost is not finished. February’s mean daily maximum is 2.8 °C above January’s and its mean daily minimum 1.2 °C above, which moves the whole month up 2.0 °C. It also leaves the mean daily minimum at -1.3 °C, below freezing, so the packing list does not change because the average did.

Wetter per day, and this is where the internet gets February wrong. 33 mm against January’s 31 is a rounding-level gap in a thirty-year average and not worth a sentence on its own, but February is a shorter month: 1.18 mm a day against January’s 1.00, about 18 percent more. January at 31 mm, March at 32 and February at 33 all sit inside the January to March stretch the weather service itself names as Budapest’s least rainy, and on gaps of one and two millimetres none of the three gets to be called the driest month.

The still-air argument does not survive the month boundary. January’s 2.26 m/s sits below Budapest’s 2.36 m/s annual mean, which is what makes January cold rather than biting. February’s 2.52 m/s sits above it, and only March at 2.72 and April at 2.62 beat it. February is the third windiest month of the year, so the advice flips: bring the windproof shell January let you leave at home, and keep the hat for wet hair after dark.

Eighty-Six Minutes Back, and Half of Them Land in the Morning

An hour and twenty-six minutes across twenty-eight days, and the month crosses the eleven-hour line on its last one. That is roughly 43 percent more daylight than January hands back, out of a month that is three days shorter, which makes February the fastest brightening month a winter visitor is realistically going to book.

The shape of the gain flips, and that is the part worth planning around. January’s recovery is almost all evening: 40 minutes of later sunset against 20 minutes of earlier sunrise. February splits down the middle, 44 minutes to the morning and 42 to the evening. Sunrise moves from 07:11 to 06:27, which is the first time since June that the morning is doing most of the work. In practice it means a February trip stops being an afternoon-and-evening trip. On the 1st the sun is not up until after seven and it is dark by a quarter past five. On the 28th there is light before half past six in the morning and still light at six in the evening, which is a whole extra usable slot at each end of the day.

The whole month runs on CET. Hungary’s clocks move on 28 March 2027, so no change falls in February.

Carnival Gets Nine Days. Lent Gets Nineteen.

Those are calendar computations rather than a published programme, and they are the reason February behaves differently from its reputation. Farsang is a moveable season pinned to Easter, and Easter 2027 is early, so the carnival ends on the ninth day of the month. Nine days of it, then nineteen days of Lent. If the trip is being booked for balls, doughnuts and masks, it is being booked for the first week of February and nothing after it.

What is genuinely dated inside that first week: Farsangi Mulatság 2027, a folk music carnival programme at the Magyar Rádió Művészeti Együttesei on Carnival Sunday, 7 February, at 09:30 and 11:00, with tickets already on sale. Busójárás at Mohács, and Which Publisher Says So

The masked end-of-winter carnival at Mohács is the one genuinely unmissable thing on the February calendar, and its 2027 dates come with a caveat that matters.

The Mohács town council lists it as 4 to 9 February 2027. The festival organisation’s own site still carries the 2026 edition. Both are official; they are not the same publisher, and the sentence you will find repeated elsewhere as an announcement is really a listing by the town rather than a confirmation by the festival. What makes it credible anyway is that it matches the organiser’s own published rule exactly: the festival runs six days ending on Shrove Tuesday, with Carnival Sunday as the peak and the last Thursday of carnival as the children’s day. Shrove Tuesday 2027 is 9 February, so the rule gives Thursday 4 February to Tuesday 9 February on its own. Two independent derivations landing on the same six days is about as strong as a date gets five months out, and it is still not the organiser saying it.

The shape of the festival, from the way recent editions have run: Thursday belongs to the children in masks, Friday and Saturday build, Sunday is the peak with the busó groups crossing the Danube in rowboats and parading to the main square for a bonfire at dusk, Monday is quieter, and Tuesday closes it with the farsangtemetés, a coffin standing for winter burned in the square. UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009, and Hungary lists it as a Hungarikum.

One legend to drop before you go, and the organisers are the ones who debunk it. The story that the masks were invented to frighten off the occupying Ottomans has, in the organisers’ own words, almost no historical basis: Mohács was freed from Ottoman rule in 1687, and significant Sokac settlement began around ten years after that. The custom is an end-of-winter rite that acquired a patriotic backstory later.

Mohács is roughly 200 to 210 kilometres south of Budapest, about two hours by car, and there is no direct train. The organisers’ own standing advice is not to drive into the town during the festival, because parking is close to impossible, and to leave the car on the Újmohács bank and take the ferry across instead. No Holiday, No School Break, So the Published Grid Is the Grid

The Hungarian labour code lists the statutory public holidays by date, and February appears nowhere in that list. The ministerial decree fixing the 2026/2027 school year gives a winter break ending 4 January 2027 and a spring break starting in late March, with nothing in between. The first semester ends on 22 January 2027, so February is the opening month of the second one and Hungarian schools are in session all of it.

That produces the cleanest planning statement of the whole winter. Every Budapest bath has a holiday rule and no two are alike: Széchenyi and Rudas swap to weekend hours on public holidays, Lukács runs its sauna world on full holiday hours, and Veli Bej closes on public and church holidays by default and then publishes exceptions one date at a time. In February 2027 not one of those rules ever fires. It also means the month has no domestic demand spike at all, which every other winter month has.

One thing to be clear about: that table is the standing weekly rule, not a February 2027 publication. Every operator in it publishes its exceptions one date at a time, and every one of those lists stops on 1 January 2027. Same at the museums. Nothing above is a promise about a specific February date, and a bath that decides in December to close for maintenance in February will say so in December.

Two details that cost people a session either way. Cash desks close an hour before the bath does and the pools have to be cleared twenty minutes before that, so a 20:00 close is a 19:40 swim and a 19:00 last entry. And the water to air argument, stated as the average it is: February’s mean daily maximum is 5.8 °C against thermal pools at 36 to 38 °C, a gap of around thirty degrees on the long-term averages. Two Traps: A Sunday Valentine’s and Four Dark Mondays

Valentine’s Day 2027 falls on a Sunday, and Sunday is the wrong night for a late bath. Rudas keeps its night bathing to Friday and Saturday. Lukács’s long night is Tuesday. Széchenyi’s is Friday. Put those three standing rules together and on Sunday 14 February 2027 no bath in this city stays open past 20:00. The romantic late-night thermal soak that every Valentine’s listicle promises is, on the operators’ published schedules, available on Saturday the 13th and not on the 14th. What is published for the day itself is at the Opera: Spartacus at 11:00 at the Opera House, Figaro³ at 11:00 at the Eiffel Art Studios, and a Wagner and Strauss concert at 19:00, which is the only dated evening event of the three.

February’s Mondays are the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd, and on every one of them the culture half of the city is shut. The Museum of Fine Arts, the Hungarian National Museum and the Museum of Ethnography all close on Mondays as standing policy, and the Opera’s published February 2027 programme has zero performances on any of the four. What stays open: Széchenyi 07:00 to 20:00, Rudas until 22:00 because Monday is its late night, Lukács 07:00 to 19:00 and Palatinus 09:00 to 19:00. Veli Bej is the half case, mornings closed and the afternoon session running 15:00 to 21:00.

The rule that falls out of it is short. A February Monday is a bath day, not a museum day, and an itinerary that puts the museums on the 15th because it is a quiet weekday has already lost that day. Our public holidays guide covers the rest of the year, where the closures are the other way round.

Forty-Two Performances, and a Carnival Opera After the Carnival

The Hungarian State Opera has published its February 2027 programme in full: 42 performances across 24 days, 31 at the Opera House and 11 at the Eiffel Art Studios. The month’s premiere is Richard Strauss’s Salome on 20 February at 19:00, and two more Strauss threads run alongside it, a Wagner and Strauss concert on the 14th and a Strauss Lieder recital on the 21st.

The row worth stopping on is the sixth one. Farsangi lakodalom translates literally as “Carnival Wedding”. It is Ede Poldini’s comic opera, premiered at this same Opera House on 16 February 1924, performed over a hundred times before the war, then gone from the repertoire until a 2022 revival at the Eiffel Art Studios. It is programmed three times in February 2027, on the 13th, 20th and 27th, and every one of those dates falls after Farsang has actually ended. A carnival opera staged entirely in Lent is a very Budapest piece of scheduling, and it is the closest thing the month has to a secret that is not one.

Note the naming trap before you go looking for tickets: the Opera’s English pages call it Love Adrift, Hungarian ticketing calls it Farsangi lakodalom, and searching one name will not find the other. Note the times as well. The 20 February performance is at 11:00 on a Saturday morning, the other two at 19:00.

Low Season, and the Data Says Cheaper Rather Than Emptier

The February money argument is real and it is the opposite of the one people expect.

February 2026 ran seven points fuller than January and 15.8 percent cheaper on the average room rate. It was also 18.6 percent cheaper than April. The two effects roughly cancel out in revenue per available room, which is the tell: February was not an emptier month than January, it was a cheaper one, and that is a better thing to book into. Anyone selling February as the emptiest month of the Budapest year is contradicted by the occupancy figure.

The volume side says the same thing from the other direction. Budapest took 41.5 percent of every hotel guest night registered in Hungary in February 2026, 643,000 of them. The city’s domestic guests were up 16 percent on the February before and its foreign guests up 6.3 percent, against national guest numbers up 4.6 percent. Low season, growing inside itself, at the lowest average rate of the three months anyone can compare it to. Who Should Not Come in February

• Anyone booking a carnival trip for the second half of the month. Farsang is over on the 9th. From the 10th the city is in Lent and the masks are packed away for a year.
• Anyone who wants a late bath on Valentine’s Day. The 14th is a Sunday in 2027 and every bath here shuts by 20:00 on a Sunday. Move it to the Saturday.
• Anyone planning a Monday around museums. Three of the big ones are closed and the Opera is dark, four times over, on the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd.
• Anyone who read that January is the still month and packed accordingly. February’s mean wind is 2.52 m/s, above the annual figure and third highest of the year. The shell matters more here than it did last month.
• Anyone expecting the frost to be behind them. The mean daily minimum is still -1.3 °C, and warmer than the coldest month is not the same as warm.

The Month Either Side

Behind you: January is 2.0 °C colder on the mean, gives back 60 minutes of daylight against February’s 86, and carries only 107.5 MJ/m² of light. What it has that February does not is New Year’s Day, a statutory holiday that splits the city in two, and the widest water-to-air gap of the year. December is the floor: 84.4 MJ/m², the whole festive apparatus, and the crowds and rates that come with it.

Ahead of you: March is the step change rather than the climb. Mean daily maximum 11.3 °C, nearly double February’s, global radiation 342.0 MJ/m², nearly double again, and the year’s strongest wind at 2.72 m/s. The clocks go forward on 28 March 2027, Easter Sunday falls on the same day, and the school spring break runs from late March into April, which puts the crowds and the rates back. February is the last month before all of that arrives.

The Verdict

February is the month to come for cheap rooms, fast-returning daylight and a dense published Opera calendar, and the wrong month to come if the point of the trip is carnival.

The case is four numbers and one correction. 86 minutes of daylight back, split near evenly between the two ends of the day. Global radiation up 68 percent on January and out of the year’s dark window for the first time. HUF 30,959 as the national average room rate in February 2026, the lowest of any month anyone can compare it against. Zero public holidays, which is why the bath schedules read exactly as published. And the correction: carnival gets nine days of this month, not twenty-eight.

Two decisions matter. Pick your week. The first one carries Farsang, Carnival Sunday and the Busójárás at Mohács; the last one carries an extra half hour of evening and a city with nothing staged in it at all. And avoid the two Mondays trap and the Sunday trap, which between them account for most of the wasted days a February itinerary produces: museums are dark on Mondays, and every bath closes early on Sundays, Valentine’s included.
