- The verdict
At Széchenyi, the sauna ritual is free on a weekday: a sauna master pours water scented with Belgian essential oils onto the stones of the 80-90°C Főnix sauna, then spends 12 to 15 minutes driving the heat around the room with a towel. Budapest calls it felöntés, szaunaszeánsz or szaunaprogram (the German word is Aufguss), and Széchenyi, Lukács, Dagály, Csillaghegy and Aquaworld all run one, from free to 1,200 HUF a round.
That puts a proper sauna ceremony within reach of any bath day: a weekday afternoon in Széchenyi’s courtyard with the ritual thrown in, a 700 HUF infusion at Dagály on the Danube, honey and salt scrubs on Csillaghegy’s benches, or a booked evening at Aquaworld where the rounds get stronger as the night goes on. All five are within the city limits. The catch is the timetable: Csillaghegy and Lukács publish their ritual times online and Aquaworld takes bookings, but Széchenyi posts the day’s times only at the sauna door and Dagály publishes none.

Where to catch an aufguss
Széchenyi: the free one, in the Főnix sauna
What it is: Széchenyi’s sauna masters run their rituals in the Főnix sauna (S10), one of the bath’s two hottest saunas at 80-90°C, with music, essential oils from the Belgian brand Loylymasters and a fanning towel. Some rounds bring natural extras such as honey or salt to scrub or moisturize your skin. Each ritual lasts 12 to 15 minutes.
Why it’s worth it: on a weekday it costs nothing beyond your bath ticket, which makes it the easiest first aufguss in the city, and the rest of Széchenyi’s pools come with the same ticket. The weakness is planning: the times are not online. They are posted at the Főnix sauna entrance, so check the board as soon as you are changed and build your soak around it. The weekend terms are not published, so ask at the same door.
The facts: during a program, the Főnix sauna and its showers are swimsuit-free and you must use a sheet or towel; the rest of the sauna area stays swimwear. Saunas and pools close at 19:40, or 21:40 on Fridays (the bath itself is open 7:00-20:00 Monday to Thursday, 7:00-22:00 Friday, 8:00-20:00 at weekends). Entry with a locker is 13,200 HUF Monday to Thursday and 14,800 HUF Friday to Sunday, or 10,500 HUF Monday to Thursday with the Good Morning ticket before 9:00. The rest of the bath is in our Széchenyi guide, and the Saturday night version of this courtyard, with DJs instead of sauna masters, is Sparty.

Lukács: published times, a swimsuit-free Sauna World
What it is: a separate Sauna World inside Lukács Bath, reached with a 1,300 HUF add-on, with a Finnish sauna, a naturist sauna, a salt crystal sauna, an aroma steam room, an infrared sauna and a tepidarium. The bath publishes exact ceremony times: Tuesdays at 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00, Saturdays and Sundays at 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00, held only occasionally, so ask by email or at the ticket office, at 1,000 HUF a program.
Why it’s worth it: the whole Sauna World is swimsuit-free, so it runs the way a German or Austrian sauna would, at a fraction of the price, in a bath with a local crowd. The weakness right now is real: the bath lists the Finnish sauna among its facilities closed for renovation, and that is the sauna the ceremony slots are tied to (during a ritual it is open only to guests with a ritual ticket). Email the bath or ask at the ticket office before you build a visit around a ceremony.
The facts: Sauna World opens Monday to Friday from 14:00 to closing and all day at weekends and on holidays; the bath is open 7:00-19:00, and until 22:00 on Tuesdays. Adult entry is 7,000 HUF Monday to Thursday and 8,000 HUF Friday to Sunday. More on the pools in our Lukács guide.

Dagály: the 700 HUF infusion
What it is: Dagály’s wellness area, on the ground floor of building B, has a Finnish sauna, an infrared sauna, a steam room, a salt room and a tepidarium, plus a cold plunge pool at 14-18°C and an ice machine. Its price list includes a sauna infusion ticket at 700 HUF.
Why it’s worth it: it is the cheapest paid aufguss in this guide, in a bath where the whole afternoon, ticket and wellness add-on included, comes to 5,750 HUF on a weekday. The weakness is information: Dagály publishes the price of an infusion but not its schedule or its dress rule, so ask at the wellness area when you arrive.
The facts: adult entry is 4,500 HUF on weekdays and 4,900 HUF at weekends, the wellness add-on 1,250 HUF, and the wellness area is for ages 14 and up. The pools and the rest of the bath are in our Dagály guide.

Csillaghegy: five days a week, in Óbuda
What it is: a neighborhood bath in District III with a sauna world for over-14s: the Panorama sauna (80-90°C) behind a huge window, the 18-seat Ördög (“Devil”) sauna at 80-100°C, an aroma sauna, an infrared sauna, a steam room and plunge pools at 26-29°C and 40°C. Programs run on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with Loylymasters oils, fruit, salt scrubs and Hungarian honey, a peeling in the steam room on Sundays, and an icy finale.
Why it’s worth it: five ritual days a week at 1,200 HUF a program, and the crowd is local. It also stages themed sauna marathon weekends and publishes the full timetable for each on its offers page. The weakness is the trip: it is the farthest of the five from the center.
The facts: the program sauna or steam room and the showers go swimsuit-free during a program (sheet or towel required); the rest of the sauna world does not. Arrive at least half an hour before a program starts: the bath gives no compensation or refund if you are late. The sauna world add-on is 1,600-1,700 HUF, or 4,300 HUF on weekdays and 4,700 HUF at weekends for sauna-only entry. The sauna world is open 10:00-20:00, until 22:00 on Wednesdays, and the programs start at 16:40, 17:30, 18:20 and 19:10 on Mondays and Fridays, every 50 minutes from 17:30 to 20:50 on Wednesdays, and every 50 minutes from 14:20 to 17:40 at weekends.

Aquaworld: the booked evening
What it is: one of the largest sauna areas in Budapest, split in two: a swimsuit section and a swimsuit-free section for over-18s with its own Finnish sauna, aroma sauna, ice chamber at 5-10°C and plunge pool. SaunaSeances run Wednesday to Sunday. The sauna master stays inside with you, heats the room gradually with aromatic infusions, waves the hot air around each guest with a flag and towel, and, unusually for a sauna, keeps up the chat and the jokes. Each round is at most 12 to 15 minutes, and the rounds get stronger as the evening goes on.
Why it’s worth it: it is the most complete ceremony program in the city, and adults with any Aquaworld day ticket already have Sauna World included. The weakness is admin: for a sauna-only combo you register on szauna-szeansz.hu first, then show the confirmation at the Aquaworld till; day-ticket guests can also buy an e-token at the sauna desk if places are left, and during a session only registered guests may stay in that sauna.
The facts: 1,200 HUF a session. If you only want the saunas, the sauna-only combos start at 16:00 on session days: 5,000 HUF for 2 hours with one session, 7,600 HUF for 3 hours with two, 10,500 HUF for 5 hours with four (about $15, $23 and $32). A sauna sheet for the sessions rents at 500 HUF. Aquaworld is open daily 7:00-21:00, and the adult day ticket is 10,000 HUF on weekdays and 11,900 HUF at weekends. The slides and pools are in our Aquaworld guide.

Good saunas, no ceremony
These baths publish no sauna programs, but their saunas come with the ticket and are worth the sweat on their own:
- Rudas has Finnish saunas in all three of its sections, including one at 90-100°C, plus an aroma sauna, steam rooms and a salt chamber. Its night bathing and the Ottoman dome are in our Rudas guide.
- Paskál has a panorama Finnish sauna for 30 people at 90°C and a smaller Finnish sauna with two plunge pools next to it. Its geothermal sauna has closed for good and a salt inhalation room is being built in its place. More in our Paskál guide.
- Palatinus on Margaret Island keeps a Finnish sauna at 90-100°C, an aroma sauna and a steam cabin; from 19 October 2026 the bath is open until 16:00. See our Palatinus guide.
- Gellért closed on 1 October 2025 and is expected to reopen in 2028, so its saunas are off the list; the Gellért page explains where to soak instead.

If you are staying at a hotel with its own spa, ask at the spa desk whether it runs infusions for guests; hotel spas rarely publish a public timetable.
How an aufguss works
The sauna master closes the door, ladles water mixed with essential oils onto the hot stones, and the steam rises. Then comes the fanning: a towel or a flag swung in circles and figures that pushes the heat down from the ceiling and onto each guest in turn. A round lasts 12 to 15 minutes, and the next round is usually hotter than the last. Some programs add a scrub (salt, honey, fruit) between rounds, and Csillaghegy ends its sequence with ice.
After each round: cool down (a cold shower, the plunge pool, the ice chamber where there is one), then rest. Drink water before you start rather than during. Aquaworld’s own advice is to stick to four sauna sessions a day, five at most for seasoned sauna-goers.

Sauna etiquette in Budapest
The general bath rules (shower first, keep your voice down) are in our bath etiquette guide. The sauna adds a few of its own, and the baths spell them out:
- Swimsuit off for the ritual, towel on the bench. In a ceremony sauna you sit or lie on a towel or sauna sheet, with no bare skin on the wood and no swimsuit. Aquaworld forbids swimwear in its swimsuit-free saunas and asks guests to sit so that their sweat does not drip on anyone else.
- Textile-free does not mean everyone strips. At Aquaworld nobody can be made to undress if they prefer a sauna skirt or sheet of natural fabric, and nobody can be made to cover up either; a decent posture is expected.
- Shower and dry off before you go in. You enter with a dry body: you sweat more easily, and the plunge pool needs a shower before and after to keep chlorinated water out of it.
- Flip-flops stay outside the cabin.
- No phones, no cameras. Aquaworld bans them from its swimsuit-free area entirely.
- Hands off the stones. Only staff pour anything on the stove.
- Be on time. You cannot walk into a session that has started, and Csillaghegy asks you to arrive half an hour early.
- Leave whenever you need to. Anyone who has had enough can step out mid-round; just slip out quietly.
- Skip the politics. Aquaworld’s etiquette rules out politics and religion as sauna conversation, which is good advice in any language.
- Under 14s wait outside. Dagály, Csillaghegy and Aquaworld set 14 as the minimum age for their sauna areas, and Aquaworld’s swimsuit-free area is 18+.

Private saunas you can book
Csillaghegy private bathing is the one real private sauna in the city baths: for 20,000 HUF per person (about $61) you arrive around 18:30, use the wellness and sauna world from 19:00 to 20:00, then have the panorama pool and one Finnish sauna to yourselves from 20:00 to 21:00. Towel, bathrobe, Törley sparkling wine and chocolates are included. Groups of up to 12 ask the Budapest Spas sales team for a quote at least five working days ahead.
Széchenyi Private Spa is a private room, not a private sauna: four hours in a rest room of your own, with the bath’s pools, saunas and steam rooms shared with everyone else, a robe, slippers, sparkling wine and access to the Dayspalm area. The plain Private Spa retreat in a Superior room costs 30,000 HUF per person on weekdays and 35,000 HUF at weekends (about $91 / $106); packages with a couple’s massage start at 40,800 HUF. At weekends the package adds a separate pool area with two pools for that day’s Private Spa guests only.
Rudas Sky Terrace & Spa rents its rooftop for private bathing for couples, bookable online for 20:00-21:00 from Tuesday to Saturday. It is a pool, not a sauna; booking runs through the bath’s offer page.

When to go
Winter is sauna season, and the contrast is the point: a round in the Főnix sauna followed by the outdoor pool in the cold is the best thing Széchenyi does between November and March. Our winter baths guide lists which outdoor pools stay open. For the quietest hours across the baths, see when Budapest’s baths are crowded, and for the full picture of the big three, our Budapest thermal baths guide.
The verdict
Start where the ritual is free: a weekday at Széchenyi, with the Főnix sauna board read before you get in the water. If that round hooks you, book an evening of SaunaSeances at Aquaworld, or head up to Csillaghegy and do it with the locals for 1,200 HUF.
Good to know
Which Budapest bath has the best sauna ceremonies?
For a first try, Széchenyi: the rituals are free on weekdays, last 12 to 15 minutes and use Belgian essential oils. For a full evening built around ceremonies, Aquaworld, where you book SaunaSeances from Wednesday to Sunday. For the local version at a low price, Csillaghegy runs programs five days a week at 1,200 HUF.
Do you have to be naked in a Budapest sauna ceremony?
Not naked, but no swimsuit. At Széchenyi and Csillaghegy the program sauna and its showers are swimsuit-free during a ritual and you wear a towel or sauna sheet; the rest of the sauna area stays swimwear. Lukács's Sauna World is swimsuit-free throughout. Aquaworld has a swimsuit sauna area and a separate swimsuit-free one for over-18s, where nobody can be made to strip if they prefer a sheet or sauna skirt.
How much does an aufguss cost in Budapest?
Nothing extra at Széchenyi on weekdays. Dagály charges 700 HUF per infusion, Lukács 1,000 HUF per program (while its Finnish sauna is under renovation, ask first), and Csillaghegy and Aquaworld 1,200 HUF per session. Most of them also need a sauna-area add-on on top of the bath ticket.
Can I leave a sauna ritual before it ends?
Yes. Aquaworld says outright that anyone who has had enough may leave the sauna at any point. What you cannot do is walk in once a session has started, so arrive before the door closes.
Can I book a private sauna in Budapest?
Csillaghegy Bath rents its panorama pool and one Finnish sauna privately from 20:00 to 21:00, with an hour in the wellness and sauna area before it, for 20,000 HUF per person. Groups of up to 12 ask the Budapest Spas sales team for a quote. Széchenyi's Private Spa gives you a private room, but the saunas there are shared.
