Easter comes early in 2027. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March, which puts the whole holiday in the last week of March, eight days earlier than 2026’s 5 April. Good Friday and Easter Monday are both public holidays in Hungary, so Budapest gets a four-day weekend, and it behaves like one: shops shut, families eat ham, boys go out with cologne on Monday morning, and the thermal baths quietly carry on.

Two other things happen on the same weekend. The clocks go forward on Easter Sunday itself, so you lose an hour of sleep and gain an hour of evening. And the Hungarian school spring break runs from 25 March to 4 April, so the long weekend sits inside a week and a half when local families are off too.

The Easter 2027 Dates

Western Easter moves every year, and 2027 is an early one. Here is the week, with what each day means in practice:

Date Day What it is Public holiday?
Sun 21 March Palm Sunday Virágvasárnap, Holy Week begins No (a Sunday)
Thu 25 March Maundy Thursday Nagycsütörtök, first day of the school break No
Fri 26 March Good Friday Nagypéntek Yes
Sat 27 March Holy Saturday Nagyszombat, Easter Vigil services in the evening No, ordinary Saturday
Sun 28 March Easter Sunday Húsvétvasárnap, clocks go forward at 02:00 A Sunday
Mon 29 March Easter Monday Húsvéthétfő, the sprinkling day Yes

Good Friday has only been a public holiday since 2017, when Parliament added it to the Labour Code’s list, so if you were here at Easter a decade ago and remember a working Friday, that is why. With the two holidays falling on a Friday and a Monday, Easter needs no bridge day: the four days line up on their own.

Two dates either side matter too. 15 March 2027, the national holiday, falls on a Monday two weeks earlier, and our March guide has the weather you can expect in late March. Whit Monday, the next holiday tied to Easter, falls on 17 May 2027.

What Is Open and Closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday

Treat Friday, Sunday and Monday as closed days for anything that sells you groceries, stamps or bank services, and Saturday as the one normal shopping day in the middle.

Supermarkets and chain shops. In 2026 the big chains, Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Spar, Interspar, Tesco, Auchan and COOP, closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, and CBA was typically closed too, though small family-run CBA and COOP shops could differ. On Holy Saturday the chains kept their normal Saturday hours, though smaller shops could close earlier in the afternoon. The chains publish their 2027 Easter hours in the weeks before Easter, so treat the 2026 pattern as the plan and their own pages as the confirmation.

Where you can still buy things. Petrol station shops, nonstop convenience stores, small owner-run shops and shops at the airport and railway stations were the places still selling in 2026. Some Spar partner shops and the petrol-station Spar Express outlets stayed open too. If you are self-catering, shop on Thursday 25 March or on Saturday morning, and do not leave the bread for Sunday.

Post offices and banks. Post offices closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday in 2026, and parcel delivery stopped with them. Banks and government offices close on every public holiday.

Market halls. In 2026 Budapest’s market halls worked on Holy Saturday and reopened on the Tuesday after Easter. If the Great Market Hall is on your list, Saturday is the day.

Museums. Easter Monday is a Monday, and Monday is the standard closing day at several big museums: the Hungarian National Museum, for one, opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and publishes its holiday hours on a separate page. Check the museum you want before building a Monday around it.

Restaurants and cafés. These set their own hours, and each one decides for itself whether to open on the holidays. Easter is a family holiday in Hungary, so if you have a particular table in mind for Sunday or Monday, book it.

Transport on the Easter Holidays

BKK, Budapest’s transport company, runs separate timetables for holidays, Saturdays and school breaks, and Easter uses all three. Its 2027 Easter notice is not out yet. In 2026 it ran this pattern, and the calendar logic carries over:

  • Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday: public holiday timetable, which on most lines looks much like a Sunday.
  • Holy Saturday: Saturday timetable.
  • Weekdays of the school break: school break timetable.
  • Late metro: the M2, M3 and M4 ran with extended hours on the Friday and Saturday nights and on Easter Sunday night too, the night before the Monday holiday.
  • Processions: church processions brought short traffic restrictions at several points in the city on Saturday evening and Sunday morning, and BKK warned that buses on those routes could wait a few minutes.

For lines, tickets and the airport bus, the Budapest metro guide has the details. Our public holidays page explains how the holiday timetable compares with an ordinary weekday.

Hungarian Easter Traditions

Easter is a bigger family holiday in Hungary than many visitors expect, and most of it happens at home. What you will notice from the outside:

Ham, eggs, kalács and horseradish. The Easter meal centres on boiled ham, served with hard-boiled eggs, horseradish and kalács, the sweet braided bread. In many Catholic parishes people bring baskets of these foods to church to be blessed at Easter. You will see whole hams and braided loaves stacked in shops in the days before, and ham and horseradish on restaurant menus over the weekend.

Painted eggs. Decorated eggs, hímes tojás, are the symbol of the holiday. The techniques range from plain red eggs to multicoloured, plant-dyed and etched designs. The red colour traditionally stands for blood and the egg itself for life and rebirth.

Locsolkodás, the Easter Monday sprinkling. This is the one that surprises people. On Easter Monday boys and men visit girls and women and sprinkle them. In the old village version it was a bucket of cold water; today it is mostly a splash of cologne, delivered with a short rhyme asking permission. The reward is a painted egg, and often a drink or something to eat. The custom rests on an old belief in water’s cleansing, fertility-giving power, and the rhyme and the cologne came later than the water. In Hollókő, the sprinkling is one of the village’s best-known customs, which makes it a popular Easter day trip; Hollókő’s own site has no 2027 programme yet.

If someone offers to sprinkle you on Easter Monday, it is meant kindly. A smile and a painted egg, if you have one, is the right answer.

Easter Markets and Events

Here is the frustrating part for an early planner: most Easter events in and around Budapest publish their dates only a few weeks ahead, and none of the regular ones below has a published 2027 date yet. What they did in 2026 tells you what to look for:

  • Budapest Zoo. In 2026 the zoo ran an Easter programme from Good Friday to Easter Monday, included in a standard entry ticket: an egg hunt across the grounds with a clue card from the Information Pavilion, a recycled-materials play area and a beeswax workshop in the Cave Hall, and photos with a costumed bunny.
  • City Park. Liget Budapest held a free Easter orienteering event in the park on Easter Monday 2026, with registration through its Liget+ account.
  • Skanzen, the open-air museum in Szentendre. Its yearly programme for 2026 put the Easter festival on Easter Sunday and Monday, 5 and 6 April. The 2027 yearly programme is not published yet.

Easter markets are a smaller affair than the Christmas ones, and no Budapest Easter market has published a 2027 edition. If one is announced, it will be on the organiser’s own page a few weeks before Easter, and this page gets it the day it is.

Churches and Services

Holy Week is the busiest week of the church year, and Budapest’s big churches fill for it. The Easter Vigil on Saturday evening and the Sunday morning masses are the high points, and the processions that come with them are the reason BKK warned in 2026 of short bus delays on Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

St. Stephen’s Basilica is the obvious choice for a visitor. Its standing schedule for Sundays and holy days lists masses at 8:30, 10:00 (the high mass), 12:00, 16:00 in English, and 18:00. Tourist visits to the church run Monday to Saturday 09:00 to 18:00 and on Sunday only from 13:00, so on Easter Sunday the morning belongs to the services; the panorama terrace and treasury open daily from 09:00 to 19:00. The Basilica’s Holy Week 2027 schedule is not published yet, and Easter services can differ from the standing Sunday pattern, so check its page in March. Matthias Church on Castle Hill is the other big Catholic venue in the city.

Orthodox Easter falls on 2 May 2027, five weeks after Western Easter. Budapest has Orthodox parishes, among them the Serbian church on Szerb utca in the inner city. It is not a public holiday in Hungary and nothing closes for it. It does land the day after Labour Day, 1 May, which is a Saturday in 2027.

Thermal Baths on the Holidays

The baths are the best news of the weekend, because they do not close. The two big operators write the same rule on their own pages: every public holiday runs on weekend hours. What that changes depends on the bath.

Széchenyi. The weekly grid is 07:00 to 20:00 Monday to Thursday, 07:00 to 22:00 on Friday and 08:00 to 20:00 at weekends. Under the holiday rule, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday all run 08:00 to 20:00. Good Friday is the one that catches people out: no Friday late evening, and the pools empty at 19:40. The ticket office closes an hour before the bath does. Prices are in our Széchenyi guide.

Rudas. Open every day, and the holiday rule changes the rota rather than the hours. On an ordinary Friday or Monday the Turkish bath is men only until 10:45. On weekend hours it is mixed from 06:00 to 20:00, so on Good Friday and Easter Monday women can use it from the morning. The flip side: on an ordinary Monday the wellness area stays open until 22:00, and on Easter Monday it closes at 20:00. Night bathing runs on Friday and Saturday from 22:00 to 03:00. If you book the Saturday night session on 27 March, remember that the clocks jump from 02:00 to 03:00 during it, so the session is four hours long rather than five. Details in our Rudas guide.

Lukács. Open 07:00 to 19:00 every day except Tuesday, when it stays open until 22:00. On weekdays its sauna world opens only at 14:00, but on weekends and holidays it runs for the full opening hours, so on Good Friday and Easter Monday you get the saunas from the morning. More in our Lukács guide.

Gellért has been closed since 1 October 2025, and the operator expects to reopen in 2028.

A practical point: the four holidays fall inside the school spring break, so local families have time for the baths too. Buy online and go early in the day.

Should You Come for Easter?

Yes, if you want a city break with the baths, the churches and a bit of tradition, and you do not need the shops. Here is how the weekend weighs up.

What works in its favour. The baths keep full weekend hours on every holiday. The churches hold their biggest services of the year. Easter Sunday is also the day the clocks go forward, so from the 28th the evenings run an hour later, and the late-March light starts to feel like spring. If you want to see the sprinkling or eat ham with horseradish, this is the only weekend of the year to do it.

What works against it. Shops, post offices and banks close for three of the four days, so a shopping weekend is the wrong plan. Easter Monday is also a Monday, which is the closing day at several museums. The long weekend sits inside the school spring break, so family attractions such as the zoo and City Park share the days with Hungarian families on holiday. And most of the 2027 Easter programme has no published date yet, so if a particular event is the reason for the trip, wait for its date before you book.

Who it suits. Couples and friends on a bath-and-food weekend, anyone interested in church music and services, and families who want the zoo or the Szentendre open-air museum with an Easter programme on. Who should pick another week: anyone who wants to shop, anyone whose plans depend on Monday museums, and anyone hoping for a quiet city, since Hungarian schoolchildren are off all week and most workers have the four days.

For the weather, see Budapest in March, and for the week after Easter, when the city is back to normal and properly green, see Budapest in April. If you are still choosing the month, our best time to visit Budapest guide lays the year out side by side.

Good to know

When is Easter 2027 in Budapest?

Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027. Palm Sunday is 21 March, Maundy Thursday 25 March, Good Friday 26 March, Holy Saturday 27 March and Easter Monday 29 March. Good Friday and Easter Monday are statutory public holidays in Hungary, and Easter Sunday is a Sunday, so the four days from Friday to Monday make a long weekend with no bridge day needed. Orthodox Easter is on 2 May 2027 and Whit Monday, the next holiday tied to Easter, on 17 May.

Is Good Friday a public holiday in Hungary?

Yes. Parliament added Good Friday to the Labour Code's list of public holidays in 2017, the first one being 14 April that year, and it has stood alongside Easter Monday ever since. For a visitor that means banks, government offices and post offices close, and in 2026 the big supermarket chains closed on Good Friday as well as on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

Are shops open in Budapest over Easter?

Mostly not on the three holidays. In 2026 Aldi, Lidl, Penny, Spar, Interspar, Tesco, Auchan and COOP closed on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, as CBA typically did on those three days (small family-run CBA and COOP shops could differ), and kept normal hours on Holy Saturday. Petrol station shops, nonstop convenience stores, some small owner-run shops and shops at airports and railway stations were the places still selling. The chains publish their 2027 Easter hours in the weeks before, so do any self-catering shopping on Thursday 25 March or Saturday 27 March.

Are the Budapest thermal baths open at Easter?

Yes. Széchenyi and Rudas both state that every public holiday runs on weekend hours. At Széchenyi that means 08:00 to 20:00 on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. At Rudas it means the weekend rota, with the Turkish bath mixed from 06:00 to 20:00, so women can use it on the Good Friday and Easter Monday mornings that are men only on an ordinary Friday or Monday. Lukács opens 07:00 to 19:00 every day except Tuesday, which runs to 22:00, and its sauna world keeps full hours on holidays. Gellért has been closed since 1 October 2025, with reopening expected in 2028.

How does public transport run at Easter in Budapest?

In 2026 BKK ran its public holiday timetable on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday and its Saturday timetable on Holy Saturday, and the 2027 calendar lines up the same way. It also ran the M2, M3 and M4 later than usual on the Friday, Saturday and Easter Sunday nights and warned of short waits on bus routes near church processions on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The 2027 notice is not out yet; BKK publishes it shortly before the weekend.

Is Easter a good time to visit Budapest?

Yes, if you plan around closed shops. The baths keep full weekend hours, the churches hold their biggest services of the year, the clocks go forward on Easter Sunday so the evenings suddenly run an hour later, and Easter Monday brings the sprinkling tradition. The trade-off is that shops and post offices close for three of the four days, the long weekend sits inside the school spring break from 25 March to 4 April, and most of the city's Easter programme for 2027 has no published date yet.
