Hévíz Advent 2026: A Christmas Market Beside a Lake You Can Bathe In All Winter
On this page
Most Hungarian Christmas markets give you mulled wine and a cold walk home. Hévíz adds something no big town can: a thermal lake that stays warm enough to bathe in all winter. From Saturday 28 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 the spa town runs its Advent, Ünnepi fényvarázs Hévízen, Festive Light Magic in Hévíz, with a Christmas fair, candle lighting, decorated fir trees and light projections on its buildings.
The plan almost writes itself. Spend the afternoon floating in the steaming lake, get out when bathing ends at 16:00, and walk to the lights as the sky goes dark. Do it over a weekend rather than a day: Hévíz is about two and a half hours from Budapest, and the evening is the whole point.

Why Hévíz, of All the Advent Towns
Debrecen, Eger and Győr have bigger squares and longer stall rows, and our guide to Christmas in Hungary covers them town by town. What Hévíz has that no other market town does is a natural thermal lake: you can swim in it on a December afternoon and walk to the market at dusk.
The lake is natural, fed from a spring cave, and the operator says its water does not drop below 22°C even in winter. On a cold day the whole surface steams, and floating in warm water under frosty air is the whole appeal. Our Hévíz thermal lake guide covers tickets, the float ring and the bathing rules in full.
Winter hours suit the plan. From 25 October to 14 February the lake opens at 9:00 and bathing ends at 16:00. A 3-hour adult ticket costs 4,500 HUF. Take the last stretch of the afternoon in the water, change, and you reach the town center just as the lights take over.
Holiday hours to know: the lake closes at 14:00 on 24 December and at 16:00 on 31 December, and opens at 11:00 on 1 January.
What the Advent Program Includes
The official 2026 description lists:
- a Christmas fair on the event square on Kölcsey utca, with Christmas food and drinks
- Advent events at several spots in town, with music and candle lighting
- decorated fir trees to stroll among
- light projections on the buildings
The detailed 2026 program with daily hours and performers was not out by late October. The town’s own page for the 2025 edition gives a fair idea of what to expect:
- the fair and gastronomy market ran every day from 16:00 to 20:00, with handmade crafts alongside the food stalls
- light projections, decorated trees and a Christmas sleigh photo spot filled the town center over the same hours
- the Advent candles were lit on each Advent Sunday at 17:00 on the Kölcsey utca square, followed by a concert
- Advent windows opened around town every day from 1 December until Christmas
- a New Year’s Eve party on the same square ran past midnight
Treat 2025 as a guide, not a promise. Before you book a specific evening, look for the 2026 program on the town’s site, heviz.hu.
When to Go
- Pick an Advent weekend if you want the candle lighting. The four Advent Sundays in 2026 fall on 29 November and on 6, 13 and 20 December. In 2025 each one had a candle lighting and a concert in the early evening.
- For a calmer visit, go on a weekday.
- Between Christmas and New Year the lights stay on until 3 January. On the lake’s holiday list, only 24 and 31 December and 1 January have special hours.
- Bring a bathrobe and warm layers. The walk from the changing room to the water is the cold part, and the market is outdoors.
Make It a Weekend
Hévíz is small, and one evening covers the market. The second evening has an easy answer six kilometers away: over the winter season, the park of the Festetics Palace in Keszthely runs its own light garden, the Festetics Fénypark. Our Keszthely guide has its dates, hours and prices, plus the palace itself for a morning.
Staying in Hévíz also means you can split the lake into two sessions over two days, which suits the operator’s advice to keep each day’s time in the water short.
Getting There
From Budapest by coach. Line 1188 runs from Budapest Népliget to Hévíz bus station without a change, and the daytime runs in the current timetable take two and a half hours. The national rail and coach timetable changes in mid-December (in 2025 it changed on 14 December), so check times for your date on MÁV’s line timetable page.
From Budapest by train. Direct trains run from Budapest-Déli to Keszthely; plan most of a morning for the trip. From Keszthely it is six kilometers to Hévíz by local bus or taxi.
By car. Take the M7 from Budapest toward Lake Balaton, and allow a few hours.
From Vienna. FlixBus sells a bus connection from Vienna to Hévíz bus station. Check winter departures when you book, since timetables change through the year.
From Graz. The car is the practical choice.
The Verdict
Go to Hévíz for Advent if you want a Christmas market with a reason to stay longer than one mulled wine. The market itself is a small-town affair, and that is fine, because the main event is the combination: a warm lake in the afternoon, candles and lights in the evening, and a bed close enough to walk to. For a bigger city market on the way back, see our Christmas in Budapest guide.
