The Castle Where the Crown Was Kept
In 1440 a lady-in-waiting named Helene Kottanner slipped into the castle above Visegrád and carried Hungary’s Holy Crown away for her queen, Elizabeth. The crown was kept on this hilltop until 1529, and a century before the theft, in 1335, King Charles I hosted the kings of Bohemia and Poland at Visegrád, a summit of three kings.
Today the castle on the hill is the Citadel, and from its walls you look straight down on the tightest curve of the Danube. Down in town, the palace where King Matthias later built in Italian Renaissance style has been dug out of the hillside and partly rebuilt. Add a forest ridge with a year-round bobsled, and you have the most rewarding castle day trip from Budapest, one bus ride away. Doing the whole region? Our Danube Bend day trip guide compares Visegrád with Szentendre, Esztergom and Vác. This page goes deeper on Visegrád alone, including what is actually open in winter.

What Is Open in Winter
Visegrád changes a lot between November and March, and the opening days differ sight by sight. Here they are in one table.
| Sight | November | December | January to February | March onwards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Royal Palace | Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00 | Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00 | Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00 (to 28 February) | Regular season hours on the museum's site |
| Citadel | Daily, 9:00 to 16:00 (to 30 November) | No opening listed (1 December to 11 January) | Friday to Sunday, 9:00 to 16:00 (from 12 January) | Daily, 9:00 to 17:00 in March; 9:00 to 18:00 from April to September |
| Salamon Tower | Closed | Closed | Closed | Expected to reopen in spring 2027 |
| Bobsled | Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 16:00 | Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 16:00; daily from 28 to 31 December | Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 16:00 | March: weekdays 11:00 to 16:00, weekends 10:00 to 17:00 |
| Boats from Budapest | None | None | None | Summer only; the 2026 timetable ran Thursday to Sunday |
The short version: any Tuesday to Sunday until 30 November gives you everything except the Salamon Tower. From 1 December to 11 January you get the palace, the bobsled and the walks, but not the Citadel. From 12 January to 28 February, go on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday to get the palace, the Citadel and the bobsled on the same day.
Hours from visegradmuzeum.hu (palace winter hours notice, regular hours page and Salamon Tower notice), the Citadel operator’s ticket page on ticketbase.eu, visegrad.bobozas.hu and mahartpassnave.hu, all read on 28 October 2026.
The Royal Palace
Why go. This is where Hungary’s medieval kings actually lived. The Anjou kings and Sigismund built a palace on the slope above the river, and King Matthias rebuilt it in the early Italian Renaissance style. What you visit today has been excavated and partly rebuilt.
What you see. The ceremonial courtyard with its arcaded loggia and the Hercules fountain, a room from Sigismund’s time, the royal kitchen and the exhibitions of the south-west palace wing. Stand on the upper walkway of the courtyard for the photo everyone takes: slim columns, round arches and the wooded hillside rising behind.
What else nearby. The Renaissance restaurant is a few minutes’ walk down Fő utca, and the Palotaház crafts courtyard sits by the big car park. The Visegrád International Palace Games are held every year on the second weekend of July.

Good to know. The 8:00 winter opening is the earliest of the sights, so the palace is the natural first stop off an early bus.

The Citadel
Why go. For the view, and for the crown. After the Mongol invasion, King Béla IV and Queen Maria Laskaris built a double castle system here around 1250 to 1260: the Citadel on the summit and the Lower Castle by the river. Charles I enlarged it, and the Citadel became the keeping place of the Holy Crown until 1529, apart from Helene Kottanner’s night raid in 1440. The Ottomans took it in 1544, and it fell into ruin. From the walls the Danube swings hard around the hills below you, the panorama that gives the whole Danube Bend its name.
What you see. Walls, two towers and the ruins of the castle palace, plus a set of exhibitions: one on the Holy Crown, one on the castle’s history, a waxworks scene of the 1335 royal summit, medieval weapons and medieval hunting. A reconstructed scale model shows how the whole fortress system once fitted together. If Hungarian castles are your thing, our castles of Hungary guide puts Visegrád alongside the rest.

Getting Up to the Citadel Without a Car
The Citadel sits high on the hill above town, and this is the part that trips up most visitors. You have two real options.
On foot. Allow 30 to 40 minutes up, and it is steep the whole way. The route to take is the Kálvária path, which starts behind the parish church. Wear shoes with real grip, and remember that the way down is harder on the knees than the way up. Paths can be icy in winter.
By minibus taxi. City-Bus Visegrád runs a single 8-seat minibus up to the Citadel, the bobsled, Hotel Silvanus and Nagy-Villám. The price is per vehicle, not per person:
| City-Bus Visegrád | 2026 |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 people | 5,000 Ft per minibus |
| 5 to 8 people | 7,500 Ft per minibus |
| Children | Up to three children aged 14 or under are not counted |
| Phone | +36 30 727 6565 |
| Order hours | Daily 9:00 to 16:30 from 1 November to the end of February; 9:00 to 18:00 from 1 March to 31 October |
With only one vehicle, phone ahead rather than turning up at the bus stop and hoping. A good plan is to ride up and walk down.
The hill bus. The seasonal Volánbusz 883 line serves the Fellegvár and bobsled stops, but no run is timetabled in early November. Outside the summer season, count on walking or the minibus.
Minibus prices from city-bus.hu and order hours from visegrad.hu (local transport page), read on 28 October 2026; hill bus from the MÁV journey planner, checked on 28 October 2026 for 1, 4 and 7 November 2026.
Salamon Tower and the Lower Castle
Why go. The Salamon Tower is the 13th-century hexagonal keep of the Lower Castle, the riverside half of Béla IV’s castle system. A wall closing off the valley once ran from the castle on the hill down to the river and the Water Bastion.
What you see now. The tower is closed from 1 September 2026, with reopening expected in spring 2027. You can still see the tower and the walls from outside, and the view of the tower from the Citadel above is one of the best in town.

Closure from visegradmuzeum.hu (Salamon Tower notice), read on 28 October 2026.
Nagy-Villám: the Bobsled and the Lookout
Why go. Up on the ridge above the Citadel, Nagy-Villám is where Visegrád gets playful. The Visegrádi Bobpálya is a toboggan run that keeps going in winter: you ride a lift up and take your own sled down a 700 m track with a 35 m drop. For kids it is often the highlight of the day.
| Visegrád bobsled | 2026/27 |
|---|---|
| 1 November to 27 December | Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 16:00, closed Monday |
| 28 to 31 December | Daily 11:00 to 16:00 |
| 1 January to 28 February | Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 16:00, closed Monday |
| March | Weekdays 11:00 to 16:00, weekends 10:00 to 17:00 |
| Adult | 1,100 Ft one ride, 5,500 Ft for 6, 9,000 Ft for 10 |
| Child (3 to 14) | 700 Ft one ride, 3,500 Ft for 6, 5,600 Ft for 10 |
| Age rules | No children under 3; under-8s ride only with an adult or a child over 10 |
| Track | 700 m run, 250 m lift, 35 m drop |
| Parking | 2,000 Ft a day (2,200 Ft on holidays and long weekends), 700 Ft after 16:00 |
Good to know. The operator says hours can change in extreme weather or for technical reasons, so on a stormy or icy day, check the website before you go up. Without a car, the City-Bus minibus goes to the bobsled.
The Zsitvay lookout. On top of Nagy-Villám (378 m) stands the Zsitvay-kilátó, a lookout tower built in 1933 and a listed monument since 2005. On a clear day the view reaches the Mátra and the Pilis hills. By car you drive up Panoráma út to the car park below and walk about 10 minutes; on foot from Visegrád it is about an hour on the blue and blue-cross trails.
Bobsled hours, prices and track figures from visegrad.bobozas.hu (homepage, hours and prices pages); parking from visegrad.hu (local transport page); lookout from visegrad.hu (Zsitvay lookout page). All read on 28 October 2026.
Walks in the Visegrád Hills
The castles are only half of Visegrád. Behind the town, the forested Visegrád Mountains begin, and the walks start almost from the bus stop.
- The Apátkút valley. From the north end of town a forest path follows a stream up the Apátkúti-völgy to the Ördögmalom waterfall, a walk away from the road. The Ördögmalom forest restaurant is on the way.
- Mogyoró-hegy. The forest park on the hill above town has buildings designed by the architect Imre Makovecz and a yurt camp area.
- Panoráma út. The forest road from Visegrád up to the Citadel and Nagy-Villám is for cars; walkers take the marked trails instead.
- The Áprily Lajos memorial hike. On Saturday 7 November 2026, from 7:00 to 19:00, the town’s memorial hike in the Visegrád Mountains starts from the Visegrádi Sportcentrum.
For more forest walks with a castle at the end, see our castle ruin hikes near Budapest. Days are short in winter, so start early and carry a headlamp just in case.

Getting There
By bus (the easy way). Take the M3 metro to Újpest-Városkapu and catch the 880 bus to the Visegrád, Királyi Palota stop, right by the palace. It leaves every hour at :35, from 6:35 to 18:35, plus a 19:55, and takes 74 minutes (8:35 arrives 9:49). A single costs 745 Ft. On weekends (Saturday and Sunday) an 889 adds departures at 9:15 and 10:15; there are none on weekdays. Don’t go to Árpád híd bus station: it has no direct Visegrád service.
Coming back. Buses leave Királyi Palota for Újpest-Városkapu at 15:26, 16:26, 17:26 and 18:26, and the last direct bus is the 20:01, arriving 21:10. After that you change at Szentendre: the 20:57 gets you to Újpest-Városkapu at 22:20 and the 21:51 at 23:35.
By train and ferry. From Budapest-Nyugati, trains to Nagymaros-Visegrád leave every hour at :08 and take 39 minutes for 1,120 Ft. In addition, an InterCity leaves every two hours at :30, from 5:30 to 17:30, and takes 40 minutes. Coming back, trains leave Nagymaros-Visegrád hourly at :11 (43 minutes), with faster trains at :48 every other hour; the last ones are 21:14, 21:48, 22:14 and 23:14. Nagymaros is on the far bank, so you cross by the small ferry (rév), run by Atlantis Visegrád Club Kft. Phone +36 26 398 344 or +36 70 930 5754 to confirm the crossing before you build a day around it. The 880 bus needs no ferry at all.
Bus and train times and fares from the MÁV/Volánbusz journey planner, checked on 28 October 2026 for Wednesday 4 and Saturday 7 November 2026; times can differ on your day, and the MÁV app shows your day’s times. Ferry operator from visegrad.hu (getting there page), read on 28 October 2026.
By boat. MAHART’s Danube Bend boats are a summer outing: the 2026 Budapest to Visegrád timetable ran from 22 June to 30 August, Thursday to Sunday, and low water on the Danube suspended the Szentendre, Visegrád and Esztergom services from 13 July to 31 October 2026. No winter sailings are published.
Boat services from mahartpassnave.hu (Danube Bend timetable page), read on 28 October 2026.
By car. Visegrád is about 40 km from Budapest. Parking at the palace is free, the Citadel car park costs 1,700 Ft for two hours and the bobsled car park 2,000 Ft a day; Panoráma út climbs from town to both.
A Winter Day, Hour by Hour
This plan works Tuesday to Sunday. On a Monday the palace and the bobsled are closed. For the Citadel, use it until 30 November, or on a Friday to Sunday from 12 January; between 1 December and 11 January, swap the Citadel for the Apátkút valley walk.
| Time | What | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 7:35 | 880 bus from Újpest-Városkapu | 745 Ft, arrives 8:49 |
| 9:00 | Royal Palace | 2,200 Ft, about an hour and a half; opens 8:00 in winter |
| 10:30 | Walk up the Kálvária path, or call the City-Bus minibus | 30 to 40 minutes on foot; minibus 5,000 Ft for up to four |
| 11:15 | Citadel | 2,800 Ft; closes 16:00 in winter |
| 13:00 | Down to town, lunch at Kovács-Kert | Open every day from 12:00 |
| 14:30 | Bobsled by minibus, or a soak at Lepence | Bobsled to 16:00; Lepence's pool desk for day guests to 19:30 |
| 18:00 | Dinner at the Renaissance restaurant | Open to 22:00, or 23:00 on Friday and Saturday |
| 20:01 | Last direct 880 bus back | Arrives Újpest-Városkapu 21:10 |
The Lepence option. After a cold walk on the hill, the Lepence spa just south of town is the warm finish. The bath is open 8:00 to 21:00 and the pool desk for outside guests 8:00 to 19:30, but ticket sales pause from 11:30 to 12:00 and from 16:30 to 16:40. Phone +36 26 801 963 to check how busy it is before you arrive.
Lepence hours from thv.hu (visitor information page), read on 28 October 2026; other times and prices as in the sections above.
The Verdict
Visegrád is the best castle day from Budapest: one bus, a royal palace, a hilltop fortress that held the Holy Crown, and the finest view of the Danube Bend. Go Tuesday to Sunday. Take an early 880, see the palace when it opens, then walk up the Kálvária path or ride the minibus to the Citadel and stand on the walls above the bend. In winter, aim for any day until 30 November or a Friday to Sunday from 12 January, because the Citadel lists no opening from 1 December to 11 January. Finish with the bobsled, a soak at Lepence or a feast at the Renaissance, and catch the 20:01 home.

How do you get from Budapest to Visegrád?
The easiest way is the 880 bus from Újpest-Városkapu (M3 metro) to the Visegrád, Királyi Palota stop. It leaves every hour at :35 from 6:35 to 18:35, plus a 19:55, takes 74 minutes and costs 745 Ft. The last direct bus back leaves Visegrád at 20:01. The other way is the train from Nyugati to Nagymaros-Visegrád (39 minutes, 1,120 Ft, hourly at :08) and then the small ferry across the river; phone the ferry operator before you rely on it. Boats from Budapest run in summer only, and the 2026 season was cut short by low water.
Is Visegrád Castle open in winter?
Partly. The Royal Palace in town is open Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 to 16:00, from 1 November 2026 to 28 February 2027. The hilltop Citadel is open daily 9:00 to 16:00 until 30 November and Friday to Sunday 9:00 to 16:00 from 12 January to 28 February. Its operator lists no opening from 1 December to 11 January, so plan the Citadel outside those dates. The Salamon Tower is closed, with reopening expected in spring 2027.
How do you get up to Visegrád Citadel without a car?
Walk or take a minibus taxi. On foot it is a steep 30 to 40 minutes. The usual route is the Kálvária path from behind the parish church. The City-Bus Visegrád minibus taxi (+36 30 727 6565) goes up to the Citadel, the bobsled and Nagy-Villám for 5,000 Ft per minibus for one to four people, or 7,500 Ft for five to eight. No hill bus (Volánbusz 883) is timetabled in early November.
How long do you need in Visegrád?
A full day. Give the Royal Palace about an hour and a half, the walk up and the Citadel two to three hours, and add the bobsled, a forest walk or a soak at Lepence in the afternoon. The last direct 880 back to Budapest leaves at 20:01.
Is Visegrád worth visiting?
Yes, if you like castles and views. You get a royal palace where Matthias built in Renaissance style, a hilltop Citadel that once held the Holy Crown, and the best view of the Danube Bend, all on one bus from Budapest. Pick a Tuesday to Sunday, and in winter avoid 1 December to 11 January if the Citadel matters to you.
Is the Visegrád bobsled open in winter?
Yes. From 1 November to 27 December and from 1 January to 28 February it runs Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 16:00, and it is closed on Mondays. From 28 to 31 December it runs every day, 11:00 to 16:00. An adult ride costs 1,100 Ft and a child's (3 to 14) 700 Ft. The operator says hours can change in extreme weather or for technical reasons.
Can you visit Visegrád on a Monday?
Only partly. The Royal Palace and the bobsled are closed on Mondays. Until 30 November the Citadel is open every day, so a November Monday still works for the Citadel, the view and a forest walk. From 12 January to 28 February the Citadel opens Friday to Sunday only, so a winter Monday gives you little beyond walks and a meal.
