The thermometer is not what changes in November. The light is. The Hungarian weather service’s measure of energy reaching the ground falls from 258.6 MJ/m² in October to 128.7 in November, a clean halving, while rain moves 3 mm. Whatever reputation this month carries, the measurements say it is dark, not wet.
And it is two months wearing one name. Until the middle, the emptiest city of the autumn: school resumes on 2 November, the domestic crowds vanish, and nothing major is on until the 16th. Then the Christmas markets open, on a mid-November Friday in each of the last three seasons, and every weekend after that belongs to the Advent crowd.

The opera and concert season runs at full strength all month, so the evening problem November creates, and it creates a large one below, has a standing solution in the concert halls.
The Middle of the Month Is Where Everything Flips
November has no collision weekend the way October does. It has an interval instead, and the curtain between the two acts is the market opening.

The opening date is the one fact the year has not supplied yet. The two flagship markets, Advent Bazilika at the Basilica and the Vörösmarty Classic Xmas, run under one organizer and have opened together on a mid-November Friday three seasons running: Friday 17 November 2023, Friday 15 November 2024, Friday 14 November 2025. No 2026 date has been published. A pattern is not a promise, so a trip built around the markets belongs in the last week of the month, where every recent season has had them running, rather than balanced on a mid-month guess.
School is the other lever, and it is a decree rather than a feeling. The ministerial order fixing the 2026/2027 school year puts the first teaching day after the autumn break on Monday 2 November. It is the mechanism that empties Budapest on 1 September running one more time: the Hungarian families who filled the city through the ten-day break go home, and the first full week of November is the strongest candidate for the quietest, cheapest week of the whole autumn.
What 1 November Actually Does to Your Day
Less than a national holiday usually does, and more than nothing.
It is a Sunday in 2026, which mutes it. All Saints’ Day is a public holiday, but falling on a Sunday it brings no long weekend and no schedule surprises at the baths: the operators run weekend hours on public holidays, and this one already is a weekend day. The holiday-schedule trap that catches October visitors at Rudas cannot fire in November.
Shops close, including the ones a normal Sunday keeps open. The big supermarkets that trade on an ordinary Sunday shut for the holiday. Pharmacies keep their duty rota, restaurants and cafés run. Our public holidays guide carries the pattern for the whole year.
The thing to actually do is the one the holiday exists for. Fiumei Road National Graveyard, the Kerepesi cemetery, is free to enter and open 07:30 to 17:00 in November: 56 hectares holding Kossuth, Ady, Arany, Jókai, Erkel and József Attila, plus the 1848 and 1956 sections. On the evening of All Saints the candle-lighting turns it into something no museum matches, and in recent years the gates have stayed open into the evening for it. Sunset is 16:27, so the candles start early and the whole evening works.
Every Evening Is a Night
October did the violent part: the clocks went back on the 25th, and November inherits the result. There is no clock event this month, and the change is a slide rather than a step.

Sunset moves only 32 minutes across the month. Daylight loses 1 hour 14 minutes anyway, because sunrise retreats 42 minutes at the other end: 10 hours 0 minutes of daylight on the 1st becomes 8 hours 46 minutes on the 30th, with civil twilight over at 16:59 at the start of the month and 16:30 at the end. From roughly mid-month, the sun is down before 16:10 and it is fully dark before 16:45.
Plan with that rather than against it. The Danube sightseeing boats hold their winter band all month, four daytime departures at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30 plus the 19:00 dinner cruise, and from mid-month the 15:30 boat is a sunset cruise in everything but name. Museums, concert halls, baths and, once they open, the markets are all evening shapes. November punishes itineraries written for daylight and rewards the ones that treat 17:00 as mid-evening.

The step into November is the steepest in the Budapest year: 7.0 °C off the daily maximum from October, with another 5.9 °C waiting in December. And one comparison worth sitting with before booking either neighbour: December’s average afternoon, 3.5 °C, is barely warmer than November’s average night, 3.1 °C.
The number that is missing is the rain. 48 mm is 3 mm more than October and 8 mm more than December. Whatever November’s reputation says, it is not a wet month by this city’s own measurements. The number that does the damage is the light. Global radiation halves from October, after already falling 36 percent from September to October, which leaves November at 32 percent of September. Only December is darker.
The consolation is the air. 2.25 m/s of wind is mid-table, calmer than every month from February to May, and near-still 5 °C air is a different animal from moving 5 °C air. It is also, precisely, the bath argument below.
November and March are the same thermometer

The means are twins, and November’s nights are actually the milder ones. Then the resemblance ends. March carries 2.7 times the light and the strongest wind of the year, 2.72 m/s against November’s 2.25. On weather alone, March wins on light and loses on the wind, and we are not going to pretend the light is a small thing. What November holds that March never will is the calendar: candle-lit cemeteries, a documentary festival, and the opening week of the Christmas markets. The Baths Are the Point Now
The November bath answer is short: everything that is open at all is open every day of the month.

Then the argument for going, which is the weather itself. A 38 °C outdoor pool needs cold air to make sense, and November is the first month where 3.1 °C nights and 9.4 °C afternoons deliver it all day, in air too calm, at 2.25 m/s, to make the walk between pools miserable. Who Should Not Come in November
- Anyone whose trip is built on daylight. 128.7 MJ/m² is a third of September’s light, and it is fully dark before 16:45 from mid-month. Only December offers less.
- Anyone booking the first half of the month for the Christmas markets. The last three seasons opened on the 17th, the 15th and the 14th. A trip in the first week meets empty squares where the stalls will be.
- Anyone who wants the outdoor city. Terraces, riverbank evenings and park afternoons are October’s business. 9.4 °C afternoons and early dark end them.
- Anyone chasing the cheapest trip on a late-November weekend. Once the markets are running, those weekends crowd and price like December. The empty first half is the cheap half.
- Anyone with an outdoor swim as the point, other than thermal water. The lido season is long over; the hot pools carry the month alone.
The Month Either Side
Behind you: October’s afternoons run 7.0 °C warmer with twice the light, and its calendar carries Liszt Ünnep, the marathon, an art fair and a book festival. Ahead of you: December’s afternoons, 3.5 °C, roughly equal November’s nights, and December’s nights freeze at -1.4 °C. It is drier, 40 mm, and darker still, 84.4 MJ/m², the floor of the year; its sunsets bottom out at 15:53 in the second week of the month, two minutes earlier than 30 November. The markets themselves are identical in late November and mid-December. The crowds and prices are not, and that is the value case in one sentence: the last week of November delivers the full Advent set at shoulder-season rates. The Verdict
November is the month to come for thermal water in cold air and the opening week of Advent, and the wrong month to come for daylight in any form.
The case is a handful of numbers. Rain barely moves from October, 48 mm against 45, while the light halves and only December records less. The air is calmer than any spring month, which is what makes 9 °C walkable and a 38 °C outdoor pool the reason for the trip. And the calendar splits the month in two at the market opening.
One decision matters more than the rest: pick your half. The first two weeks are the emptiest, cheapest stretch of the autumn, with school back on 2 November and nothing major until Verzió on the 16th. The last week is early December with smaller crowds and better rates. Book the middle and you risk getting neither. If the markets are the point, take the final week, where every recent season has had them running, and book the weekend before the weekend books itself.

Cold, calm and much darker than October, but not especially wet. The long-term averages from the Hungarian national weather service, measured at Budapest Pestszentlőrinc over 1991 to 2020, are a mean of 5.9 °C, a mean daily maximum of 9.4 °C, a mean daily minimum of 3.1 °C and 48 mm of rain. That 48 mm is only 3 mm more than October, and December is drier still, so the wet-month reputation is not supported by the measurements. What collapses is the light: global radiation halves from October to November, 258.6 to 128.7 MJ/m², and only December records less. November feels like winter because of what the sky does, not the thermometer.

Interiors run warm, baths, cafés and museums alike, so layers beat one heavy piece. The 48 mm of rain wants a light waterproof layer and shoes that handle wet pavement in the dark. Wind is the one thing you can ignore: at 2.25 m/s November is calmer than any spring month, so warmth matters more than windproofing. If the markets are open when you visit, dress for standing still outdoors with mulled wine after sunset, which is the coldest thing most visitors do all trip.
Are the Budapest thermal baths open in November?
Yes. The baths run their normal schedules through November, and the cold air is the argument for going. Széchenyi runs 07:00 to 19:40 Monday to Thursday, to 21:40 on Friday, and 08:00 to 19:40 at weekends. Rudas opens daily 06:00 to 20:00 and keeps its Friday and Saturday night bathing from 22:00 to 03:00.
