Etyek is a wine village on Budapest’s doorstep, about 28 km southwest of the city, and you can reach it without a car: a direct bus from Kelenföld railway station gets there in 44 minutes. For two people, the tasting that works out of the box is Rókusfalvy’s English guided tasting on Saturday at 14:00, 7,500 HUF per person, and the last direct bus home leaves at 21:53.

Everything else here needs a bit of arranging, which is the real shape of Etyek. It is a working wine village with a hill of press houses, not a strip of tasting bars. Book one tasting, eat well, take a walk through the vines, and catch the bus back. That is a very good Saturday.

Why Etyek, of all the wine regions

Because it is the one you can do between a late breakfast and dinner. Most of Hungary’s famous wine country sits two to three hours away. The Etyek-Buda district is close enough that people call it the capital’s vineyard, and it shows in the style: fresh, cool-climate whites and sparkling wine made for the city’s tables.

The district in its current form dates from 1990 and took its present name in 1997, when it was enlarged. It belongs to the Felső-Pannon wine region and has three parts, the Etyek and Buda areas on limestone and the Velence Hills on granite and andesite. It has nothing to do with the old Buda wine district, which sat where Budapest’s own streets are now.

Mostly white grapes grow here. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling lead, with Pinot Noir gaining ground, and Olaszrizling, Grüner Veltliner (zöld veltelini), Pinot Gris and Müller-Thurgau fill in. The local signature is bubbles. Since 2020, Etyeki Pezsgő has been a protected sparkling wine with strict rules: grapes from Etyek only, the traditional method only, at least 24 months of bottle aging, brut only, and only Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

The hill to know is Öreg-hegy, Etyek’s emblematic vineyard slope, where most of the well-known cellars sit in rows of press houses.

Getting there without a car

The bus is the whole plan, and it is a good one. Take metro M4 to its end at Kelenföld vasútállomás and walk to the bus stop at the railway station. Direct buses run to Etyek községháza, the village hall stop in the center.

Going out, for example on a Saturday: the 11:40 reaches Etyek at 12:24, a 44-minute ride, and buses keep leaving hourly at :40 after that (12:40, 13:40, 14:40).

Plan around the 14:00 tasting. From the village hall to Rókusfalvy on Újhegy is about 1.6 km, roughly 22 minutes on foot via Boti utca, or about 23 minutes via Alcsúti út and Újhegy. Off the 11:40 bus you are at the estate around 12:46, with well over an hour for lunch and a look around. The 12:40 (in Etyek at 13:24) still works, but it puts you at the gate around 13:46, a quarter of an hour before the start. The 13:40 is simply too late.

Coming back: the last direct bus from Etyek községháza to Kelenföld leaves at 21:53 and arrives at 22:35 on a Saturday. The next option leaves after 2 a.m. with a change. Book a tasting that ends in time for the 21:53 bus, or arrange another ride back.

Tickets and fares: Etyek is outside Budapest, so this is an intercity coach, line 760, run under the MÁV group. A full-price adult ticket is 600 HUF (about $2) per person each way. The MÁV journey planner shows the fare and ticket options for your exact trip, and the official line timetable is published as a PDF. Times change by date and season, so check the planner before you go rather than relying on any single list.

By car it is about 28 km and 30 minutes from the city center. Hungary has zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel, so a car only works if one of you is not tasting. Haraszthy names a partner driver service on its pages if you would rather be driven.

Rókusfalvy Birtok: the one you can just buy

This is the answer for a couple who wants a fixed time, a guide speaking English and nothing to negotiate. The estate runs an English guided tasting on Saturdays at 14:00 for 7,500 HUF (about $23) per person, sold as individual tickets in its webshop. There is also an English slot at 18:00 on Saturdays; confirm that one with the estate before you plan around it.

The tasting runs one to one and a half hours in the press house with freshly baked pogácsa, and it takes in a short walk through the vines plus the barrel and sparkling cellars. The wines all come from the estate’s own vineyards: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Noir as rosé and red, a traditional-method Brut and Fresküvé. A ham and cheese platter is available on request.

What makes it work is the guiding: friendly, funny, generous with the explanation, and the setting is relaxed enough that an hour and a half passes fast. Two rules to know. A time the estate confirms in writing counts as an ordered service. And if you are running late, they hold the slot for up to 30 minutes; anything beyond half an hour comes off your tasting, one more reason to take the earlier bus.

The estate also runs Hungarian guided tastings on Wednesdays at 18:00 and Saturdays at 16:00, and private tastings for groups of more than eight. The winery is open Monday to Friday 10:00-16:00 and at weekends 10:00-18:00.

Haraszthy Pincészet: the long, generous version

Haraszthy is the big-table option. Each package is a cellar tour from the processing hall through the Knights’ Hall down to the cellar, with house cold cuts, fresh bread and mineral water, and the tasting runs in Hungarian and English.

Package Wines Length Price per person
Etyek 5 about 1.5 h 21,500 HUF (about $66)
Etyek+ 6 about 2 h 31,500 HUF (about $97)
Öreghegy 7 about 2.5 h 42,500 HUF (about $130)

On top comes a service charge: 15% on the listed prices, as the estate’s Matador drink list states beside the same three packages. Budget for it and recheck it when you book.

The packages are pitched at groups of four to twelve, which is a comfort range rather than a stated minimum, so as a couple, check availability when you book. You pay online, and staff email within 48 hours to fix the date and head count. Changes and cancellations are free up to 48 hours before. Tastings run on weekdays, and at weekends by arrangement; confirm the exact hour when staff email you.

The cellar tasting is the part that wins people over: good wine, good food and warm hosting.

Anonym Pince: small, family-run, sparkling-minded

A family cellar where the winemaker usually leads the tasting, which is the whole appeal. The vineyards have been farmed with biological vine protection since 2014. Three programmes:

  • Basic tasting: five wines, about 60-75 minutes.
  • Wine and sparkling: five wines plus two sparkling, about 90 minutes.
  • Sparkling workshop: an introduction to traditional-method sparkling with a tasting, about 2 hours.

Tastings need an advance booking. Online-booked programmes take at most 12 people. They are offered in Hungarian, English, German, Italian and French. Per the winery’s webshop contact page, tastings are arranged for groups from two people at a pre-agreed time; ask for the programme and price at info@anonympince.hu. For a specific slot in its online booking, confirm the per-person price and that the slot takes two guests before you book. Expect a personal, knowledgeable walk through the wines, a good view and wines worth carrying home.

Optimus Winery: the terrace on the food promenade

Optimus sits right at the start of the Gasztrosétány, Etyek’s food-and-wine promenade on Újhegyi út, and its tastings happen on the terrace. You pick four wines, six wines, or a pét-nat and sparkling flight, and the line-up is adjusted to what you like. Add a snack plate, an Etyek cheese platter, a cold platter or a goulash if you want it to stretch into a meal.

It works by quote: send the date, arrival time and head count through the form on the tasting page or call +36 70 490 3403, and ask about the language and the price when you do. The hosting is personal and well informed, and the terrace view does the rest.

If you have a driver

Nyakas Pince is in Tök, outside Etyek. It runs a cellar walk and tasting for groups of up to 12, booked by phone on +36 70 322 3423, and its wine shop is open Monday to Saturday 9:00-17:00. Arrange the tour in advance: shop hours are not tour times. Arrange a separate transfer if you want to include Nyakas; it is outside the Etyek walking route.

Food on site

The estate’s restaurant, the Rókusfalvy Fogadó at Alcsúti út 4, is open Wednesday to Saturday 12:00-22:00 and Sunday 12:00-18:00, and closed Monday and Tuesday. On a Saturday it covers both the lunch before a 14:00 tasting and the dinner before the last bus. Haraszthy’s restaurant, Matador, opens at weekends from April to October, 12:00-21:00 with the kitchen closing at 18:30.

A Saturday that works

11:40: the bus from Kelenföld, at the end of metro M4. In Etyek at 12:24. (The 12:40 is the tight fallback.)

12:30: lunch in the village; the Fogadó on Alcsúti út opens at noon.

13:30: walk up to Rókusfalvy on Újhegy, about 22 minutes.

14:00: the English guided tasting, one to one and a half hours.

Late afternoon: a terrace glass at Optimus if you booked it, or a slow walk through the vines on Újhegy.

Evening: dinner at the Fogadó, then the 21:53 from Etyek községháza, at Kelenföld at 22:35.

The Etyek calendar

The village throws its big parties as the Etyeki Piknik, food-and-wine weekends spread along the Gasztrosétány. The autumn 2026 edition ran on 10-11 October; the next dates appear on etyekipiknik.hu.

Rókusfalvy has a dated event of its own: a guided goose-season tasting for St Martin’s Day on Saturday 7 November 2026 at 13:00, 6,900 HUF (about $21) per person in the webshop. Ask about the language when you book.

Etyek or Budafok

If you only have an afternoon and want cellars rather than countryside, Budafok’s wine cellars are inside the city, a tram ride from the center, with limestone tunnels and sparkling-wine houses. Etyek is the version with vines in view and a bus ride out. Neither one replaces the other, and back in town Budapest’s best wine bars are where to keep tasting on the days you stay put.

When not to go

  • On a weekday without a group. Rókusfalvy’s fixed English slot is a Saturday thing, and most other cellars work by appointment.
  • If you want to drop in. Tastings need a booking, so arrange the visit before you set out.
  • If the 21:53 feels too early. Then this is a lunch-and-tasting trip, not a dinner one.

Before you go

Book the tasting before the bus. The Rókusfalvy ticket, the Haraszthy package and the Anonym slot all have to be in place first.

Check the bus for your exact date in the MÁV planner, including the last direct bus back.

Wear walking shoes. The best cellars are up on the hill sides, and the walk from the village hall is part of the day.

Good to know

How do I get from Budapest to Etyek without a car?

By direct bus from the stop at Kelenföld railway station, at the end of metro M4, to Etyek községháza in the village center. On a Saturday, for example, the 11:40 arrives at 12:24, a 44-minute ride, and departures run hourly at :40 through the afternoon. Timetables change by date, so look up your day in the MÁV journey planner, which also shows the current fare.

Can two people book a wine tasting in Etyek?

Yes. The straightforward one is Rókusfalvy's English guided tasting on Saturdays at 14:00, sold per ticket at 7,500 HUF per person in the estate's webshop. Anonym arranges tastings from two people at a pre-agreed time (ask for the programme and price; for an online slot, confirm it takes two guests), Optimus quotes for a date and head count, and Haraszthy's packages are pitched at four to twelve people, so a couple checks availability when booking.

When is the last bus back from Etyek to Budapest?

On a Saturday the last direct bus leaves Etyek községháza at 21:53 and arrives at Kelenföld at 22:35. The next connection leaves after 2 a.m. with a change, so book a tasting that ends in time for the 21:53 bus, or arrange another ride back. Check your exact date in the MÁV planner, since timetables vary.

How much does a wine tasting in Etyek cost?

Rókusfalvy's English guided tasting is 7,500 HUF per person, about $23, for one to one and a half hours with pogácsa. Haraszthy's cellar tours with cold cuts and bread are 21,500, 31,500 or 42,500 HUF per person depending on the package, plus a 15% service charge. Anonym takes tastings from two people by arrangement, so ask for the programme and price (for an online slot, confirm it takes two); Optimus quotes on request.

What wine is Etyek known for?

Mostly whites, with Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling leading and Pinot Noir growing, plus sparkling wine. Etyeki Pezsgő is a protected sparkling wine since 2020: grapes from Etyek only, traditional method only, at least 24 months of bottle aging and brut only.

Is Etyek or Budafok better for a wine afternoon from Budapest?

They answer different wishes. Budafok is inside the city, a tram ride away, and it is all limestone cellars and sparkling-wine houses. Etyek is the countryside version: vineyards, press houses on the hillsides and a bus ride out. If you want vines in view, go to Etyek; if you want the shortest trip, Budafok.
