Christmas Markets at Lake Balaton 2026: Keszthely, Siófok and Hévíz by Date

Lake Balaton in December is a different place from the summer postcard: the beaches are shut, the ferries thin out, and the lake belongs to the people who live around it. Three towns on the shore have published their 2026 Advent dates. Siófok runs Téli Varázs from 28 November to 23 December, Hévíz lights up from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and Keszthely follows from 29 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
These are small-town markets on a main square, and each comes with something extra: a palace town, an ice rink, or a lake warm enough to swim in.

Keszthely: Advent into the New Year and a Palace Town
Why go. Keszthely is a town that stays lived-in all winter, with a real center, the Festetics Palace at the top of the main street, and an Advent season that runs past Christmas, from Sunday 29 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027.
What is there. The town’s program, called simply Advent és karácsony 2026 (Advent and Christmas 2026), puts food and craft stalls on Fő tér, the main square, under festive lighting, with a town nativity scene. Advent and Christmas events also take place at several other spots around town. The town lists it as a free event.
Hours. The town has not yet published daily hours or a detailed program for 2026.
Make an evening of it. In winter the palace park becomes the Festetics Fénypark, a light garden you walk through after dark. The Keszthely guide has its dates and prices, and the palace itself for the morning.

Siófok: Téli Varázs and an Ice Rink on the Main Square
Why go. Siófok is the closest of the three to Budapest and the easiest to reach by train, and it is the only one of the three with an ice rink in its Advent listing. If you want skates, mulled wine and a train home the same evening, this is your market.
What is there. Téli Varázs Siófokon (Winter Magic in Siófok) runs on Fő tér from Saturday 28 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026. The town describes Advent lights and a festive walk through the center. The Hungarian Tourism Agency’s listing adds the detail: a Christmas market with gifts, crafts and seasonal food, an ice rink, and Christmas concerts, theater performances and craft workshops.
Hours. Daily hours and ice rink prices for 2026 are not yet published.

Hévíz: a Christmas Fair Next to a Warm Lake
Hévíz runs Ünnepi fényvarázs Hévízen (Festive Light Magic in Hévíz) from 28 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with a Christmas fair on the event square on Kölcsey utca, music and candle lighting, decorated fir trees and light projections on the buildings. Its thermal lake stays open all winter: from 25 October 2026 to 14 February 2027 bathing runs from 9:00 to 16:00, and from 2 November 2026 the lake is entered only through the Festetics Fürdőház building. Over the holidays the lake closes at 14:00 on 24 December and at 16:00 on 31 December, and opens at 11:00 on 1 January 2027. Balatonfüred on the North Shore
On the north shore, Balatonfüred is the town to know. The Balatonfüred day trip guide covers the town, its lakeside promenade and the train from Budapest.
Which One to Pick, and How to Add a Thermal Bath
- For one evening from Budapest: Siófok. It is the shortest train ride, the market sits in the town center, and the ice rink gives you something to do besides eat. Remember it closes on 23 December.
- For a weekend with a bath: Hévíz and Keszthely together. They are six kilometers apart, both run to 3 January 2027, and they have different strengths: Hévíz has the lake, Keszthely the bigger square and the palace. Float in Hévíz in the afternoon, then pick one town for the evening market and the other for the next day. The Hévíz thermal lake guide covers tickets and the bathing rules.
- For more thermal water near Keszthely: the spa towns of Zalakaros and Kehidakustány are in the same corner of the country, west of the lake.
- In Siófok, Galerius Fürdő on the Nagystrand, a spa with a thermal pool fed with thermal water from a 1,091 m deep source in Nagyberény, about 15 km away, makes a warm counterpart to an evening on the ice. It opens daily from 9:00 to 21:00; check the holiday days on its opening hours page before you go.

Getting There in Winter
From Budapest by train. On the south shore, the Balaton InterCity runs every two hours from Budapest-Déli via Székesfehérvár, Siófok and Fonyód to Keszthely. Together with the Tópart InterCity, which ends in Nagykanizsa, there is an hourly InterCity as far as Balatonszentgyörgy, so Siófok has a train every hour. Kelenföld to Siófok takes 73 minutes. InterCity cars of IC standard need a seat reservation. For Hévíz, ride to Keszthely and take a local bus or taxi for the last six kilometers, or see the direct coach in the Hévíz guide. Look up exact times for your date in MÁV’s journey planner, since the winter timetable shifts through the season.
On the north shore, a fast train runs every two hours from Budapest through Balatonfüred to Tapolca.
From Budapest by car. The M7 motorway runs along the south shore to Siófok and continues toward the western end of the lake.
From Vienna or Graz by car. Keszthely and Hévíz are at the western end of Balaton, the end you reach first coming from Austria, which makes them the natural base for a drive-in Advent weekend. Siófok is further east along the south shore.

Advent at Lake Balaton gives you a quiet lake in winter light, a market on a small-town square, and a hot bath waiting at the end of the day. Go to Siófok for an easy evening with skates, or to Hévíz and Keszthely for a full weekend that runs past Christmas.
