Pentecost in Budapest (Whit Monday): The 2027 Long Weekend
On this page
Pentecost is the quiet one among Hungary’s long weekends. There is no state ceremony and no fireworks, only a public holiday on the Monday and folk customs that live on in open-air museums and festivals. In 2027, Pentecost Sunday falls on 16 May and Whit Monday on 17 May.
For a visitor the weekend comes down to three things: the shops shut for two days, the baths and the city keep going, and the best-known Pentecost program is just north of Budapest, at the Skanzen in Szentendre.
For the rest of the Hungarian year, from carnival to Christmas, see our calendar of Hungarian holidays and traditions.

What Pünkösd Is
Pünkösd, Pentecost, is the Christian feast 50 days after Easter that marks the Holy Spirit coming down on the apostles. Because it follows Easter, the date moves every year: in 2027 Easter is 28 March, so Pentecost Sunday is 16 May. Hungary follows the Western church calendar, so Orthodox Pentecost usually falls on a different date.
In Hungary the Monday after, pünkösdhétfő, is a public holiday, so the weekend is a long one for everybody who works a normal week.

The Traditions: Kings, Queens and a Pilgrimage
The Hungarian Heritage House notes that several Hungarian customs belong to Pentecost and that some of their elements go back to before Christianity. Three are worth knowing.
The Pentecost king (pünkösdi király). In the villages the young men chose a king for Pentecost through contests of skill: horse racing, sheep herding, pole pulling or rooster shooting. The winner led the young men of the village for a year and was invited to every wedding and gathering.
Pünkösdölés and the Pentecost queen. Pünkösdölés was a singing and dancing custom of collecting gifts. A related one, the pünkösdi királynéválasztás, was a singing, dancing play performed by young girls with a Pentecost greeting, and it chose a Pentecost queen, who had a wreath of roses placed on her head. Green branches are the main symbol of the feast; around Szeged people decorated fences and windows with elderflower.
Csíksomlyó. The largest Hungarian pilgrimage of the year happens on the Saturday before Pentecost at Csíksomlyó (Șumuleu Ciuc), a Franciscan shrine in the Székely Land of Transylvania, now in Romania. The local Székelys made it a votive feast after a battle on Pentecost Saturday, 17 May 1567, in which they defended their Catholic faith. The main mass is said in the open air at the Hármashalom altar, in the saddle between the Kis-Somlyó and Nagy-Somlyó hills. In 2020 Hungary’s Hungarikum Committee added the pilgrimage and shrine to its list of Hungarikums. In 2027 Pentecost Saturday is 15 May. It is a long trip from Budapest, so for most visitors it is something to understand rather than to join.

What Happened Last Year, Pentecost 2026
These are the 2026 programs, held on the 24 and 25 May weekend. They show what the weekend usually looks like; the 2027 dates are not announced yet, and this page will be updated when the organizers publish them.
Skanzen, Szentendre: the Whitsun Heritage Festival. The open-air museum’s yearly program put its Whitsun Heritage Festival (Pünkösdi Örökség Ünnep) on 24 and 25 May 2026. The museum describes it as a meeting of the communities that keep Hungary’s intangible cultural heritage alive, with the aim of presenting folk culture to the public. In earlier years the festival has staged the customs themselves: in 2015 its program included a Pentecost king election and a queen’s procession with about a hundred young dancers. On festival days a full-price ticket costs 5,000 Ft and a half-price one 2,500 Ft, against 4,000 Ft and 2,000 Ft on normal days. The museum is closed on Mondays in the main season, but in 2026 it made an exception for Whit Monday and opened 09:00 to 17:00. Getting there and the rest of the town are in our Szentendre guide.
Margaret Island: the Jazz & Wine Festival. The third Jazz & Wine Festival ran from Friday 22 to Whit Monday 25 May 2026 in the cloister of the Margaret Island Theatre, the courtyard by the Water Tower. It opened 17:00 to 23:00 on the Friday, 10:00 to 23:00 on Saturday and Sunday, and 10:00 to 18:00 on the Monday, with wineries from all six Hungarian wine regions. Entry was 3,600 Ft, free for under-18s with an adult, and the tastings were paid separately. The organizers were the Hungarian Jazz Federation and the Margaret Island Theatre.

Open or Closed on Whit Monday
Big shops close, on the Sunday as well as the Monday. The Labor Code does not let retailers roster staff on a public holiday, so the chains shut on Whit Monday. In 2026 they shut on Pentecost Sunday too: Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Spar, Penny and Auchan closed on 24 and 25 May, and most CBA and Coop shops did as well, although franchise owners could open small shops themselves. What stayed open:
- petrol-station shops and nonstop shops
- small shops run by their owners or family members
- restaurants, cafés and bars, which the closure does not cover
- on-duty pharmacies only
Most markets and market halls were closed. Saturday was a normal shopping day, and the busiest of the weekend. If you are self-catering, shop by Saturday afternoon.
Banks and government offices close on every public holiday. Our public holidays guide has the same pattern for the rest of the year.

Getting Around: the BKK Holiday Pattern
BKK runs its public holiday timetable on Whit Monday. On most lines it looks much like a Sunday: the metro, trams and buses run all day, but less often than on a working day. Pentecost Saturday runs to the Saturday timetable and Pentecost Sunday to the Sunday one.
BKK publishes its notice for the long weekend shortly before it, with any extra services and engineering works. Check bkk.hu in the week before, or use the BudapestGO app, which shows the holiday departures.
Sources, read on 29 October 2026: the day types in BKK’s 2026 timetable calendar (bkk.hu), which puts public holidays on the same schedule as Sundays.
The Baths on Whit Monday
The thermal baths stay open. Both Széchenyi and Rudas state that every public holiday runs on weekend hours.
- Széchenyi: 08:00 to 20:00 on Whit Monday, with the pools to be left by 19:40 and the cash desk closing an hour before the bath.
- Rudas: the weekend rota, with the Turkish bath mixed from 06:00 to 20:00 and the sauna world 08:00 to 20:00. Night bathing runs on Friday and Saturday nights, 22:00 to 03:00, so Pentecost Saturday has a night session and Sunday does not.
- Lukács: 07:00 to 19:00 on a Monday, and on holidays its sauna world opens for the whole day instead of from 14:00.
- Gellért: closed since 1 October 2025, with reopening expected in 2028.
With Hungarians off work and German families on holiday at the same time, an early start is the safer plan.

Why German Visitors Come at Pfingsten
Pentecost is a long weekend in Germany too. Pfingstmontag is a statutory holiday, Bavaria’s holiday law included, and in southern Germany the school Pfingstferien follow straight after it. In 2027 they run from Tuesday 18 to Friday 28 May in Bavaria and from 18 to 29 May in Baden-Württemberg. With the weekend in front, families there are free from Saturday 15 May, the same day the Hungarian long weekend begins.
For you this means two crowds on the same weekend: Hungarians off work and Germans on holiday. Book accommodation and any timed tickets early, and expect the most popular sights and the baths to be at their busiest on 15 to 17 May. The rest of the month is covered in our Budapest in May guide.
Sources, read on 29 October 2026: Pfingstmontag in Art. 1 of the Bavarian holiday law (gesetze-bayern.de); the Pfingstferien 2027 dates from the Bavarian Ministry of Education (km.bayern.de) and the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education (km.baden-wuerttemberg.de).

- Booking: reserve accommodation early, because the weekend is full of Hungarian and German holidaymakers.
Good to know
When is Pentecost 2027 in Hungary?
Pentecost Sunday (pünkösdvasárnap) is 16 May 2027 and Whit Monday (pünkösdhétfő) is 17 May 2027. The date moves every year with Easter, which in 2027 is 28 March. Whit Monday is the public holiday, so the long weekend runs from Saturday 15 to Monday 17 May.
Is Whit Monday a public holiday in Hungary?
Yes. Pünkösdhétfő is one of the public holidays listed in the Hungarian Labor Code. Banks and government offices close, and the big shops close too, because the Labor Code does not let retailers roster staff on a public holiday.
Are shops open in Budapest at Pentecost?
Not the big ones on Sunday and Monday. In 2026 Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Spar, Penny and Auchan closed on both Pentecost Sunday and Whit Monday, and most CBA and Coop shops did too, though franchise owners could open small shops themselves. Petrol-station shops, nonstop shops and restaurants stayed open, only on-duty pharmacies opened, and most markets were shut. Saturday was a normal shopping day, and a crowded one.
Does public transport run on Whit Monday in Budapest?
Yes. BKK runs its public holiday timetable, which on most lines looks much like a Sunday: fewer trains and buses than on a working day, but a full day of service. Pentecost Saturday runs to the Saturday timetable and Pentecost Sunday to the Sunday one. BKK publishes any changes for the weekend shortly before it.
Are the thermal baths open on Whit Monday?
Yes. Széchenyi and Rudas both run on their weekend hours on every public holiday. At Széchenyi that means 08:00 to 20:00, with the pools to be left by 19:40. At Rudas the Turkish bath is mixed from 06:00 to 20:00. Lukács is open 07:00 to 19:00, and on holidays its sauna world opens for the whole day. Gellért has been closed since 1 October 2025.
What is the Pentecost king in Hungary?
A village custom. The young men chose a Pentecost king (pünkösdi király) through contests such as horse racing, sheep herding or rooster shooting, and the winner led the young men for a year and was invited to every wedding and gathering. The girls had their own version, a singing and dancing game that chose a Pentecost queen, who was crowned with a wreath of roses.
Why are there so many German visitors in Budapest at Pentecost?
Because Pfingstmontag is a public holiday in Germany as well, and in 2027 the school Pfingstferien in Bavaria (18 to 28 May) and Baden-Württemberg (18 to 29 May) begin the day after it. With the weekend in front, that gives southern German families more than a week off from 15 May, which overlaps the Hungarian long weekend.
