May in Budapest is the month the city gets its evenings back. By the 31st the sun sets at 20:31 and it stays light enough to read a menu outside until after nine. Nothing else on this page matters quite as much as that.
Then there is the rain. The Hungarian weather service puts an average May at 67 mm, more than any month except July, and nearly double April’s 36. It is a warm month with a wet streak, and the trip goes better if you pack for both.
The calendar is short for now. Two public holidays, one of them on a Saturday, and three fixtures whose organizers have already published 2027 dates. That leaves a lot of May unclaimed, which is not the worst way to arrive in a city.

The May 2027 Calendar, in Date Order
This far ahead, the third column is the one that tells you how hard to plan.
| Dates | What | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Sat 1 May | Labour Day, public holiday. It falls on a Saturday, so no extra day off | Fixed by the labour code |
| Sun 2 May | Orthodox Easter. Not a Hungarian public holiday, and nothing closes for it | Calendar computation |
| Wed 12 to Sun 16 May | Tour de Hongrie, the 48th edition, a five-day stage race across Hungary | Dates published by the organizer; route not yet announced |
| Sun 16 May | Pentecost Sunday | Calendar computation |
| Mon 17 May | Whit Monday, public holiday. Baths on weekend hours, shops closed | Fixed by the labour code |
| Thu 20 to Sun 30 May | Szeged Wine Festival, 31st edition | Dates published by the organizer |
| Thu 27 to Sun 30 May | Gourmet Festival at Millenáris | Dates published by the organizer |
| All month | Summer time, CEST. No clock change in May | Fixed by government decree |
That is the whole published list for now. Opera and concert dates are not part of it yet: check the Hungarian State Opera and Müpa programs closer to the date, because both publish their seasons in stages. Budapest100, the open-houses weekend that ran in May in 2026, has not announced a 2027 date. Neither has anyone published a 2027 May Day program for City Park.
A Warm Month With a Wet Streak
| Long-term normal | Apr | May | Jun |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean temperature | 12.4 °C | 16.9 °C | 20.7 °C |
| Mean daily maximum | 17.9 °C | 22.6 °C | 26.2 °C |
| Mean daily minimum | 7.1 °C | 11.6 °C | 15.2 °C |
| Precipitation | 36 mm | 67 mm | 66 mm |
| Global radiation | 505.9 MJ/m² | 623.1 MJ/m² | 665.7 MJ/m² |
| Mean wind speed | 2.62 m/s | 2.51 m/s | 2.39 m/s |
Temperature and precipitation are the 1991 to 2020 normals; global radiation and wind are 2001 to 2020. All of them come from the Hungarian weather service’s Budapest Pestszentlőrinc station, and all of them are averages over decades, not a promise about the week you booked.
The warm-up is steep. The mean daily maximum climbs 4.7 °C from April to May and another 3.6 °C into June. The mean daily minimum climbs 4.5 °C from April. A trip in the first days of the month and one in the last days are different trips, with the start of May closer to late April and the end of it leaning towards June.
The rain is the surprise. 67 mm is almost double April’s 36 mm and one millimetre more than June. Across the year only July, at 75 mm, beats it. Spread over 31 days that is about 2.2 mm a day on average, so it is not a monsoon, but it is enough to plan one indoor afternoon per few days rather than hoping for none.
The light is close to its peak. Global radiation, the energy reaching the ground, goes from 505.9 MJ/m² in April to 623.1 in May, up 23 percent, and May runs at 91 percent of July’s 684.0. Long days are only part of it: the sun is high enough by now that a cloudless afternoon on the Danube embankment feels properly summery.
The wind is easing, but it is not gone. 2.51 m/s is still above Budapest’s 2.36 m/s annual mean, and only March, April and February are windier. A breezy evening on a bridge is a light jacket’s job, not a coat’s.
May and September are the same month on paper
| May | Sep | |
|---|---|---|
| Mean temperature | 16.9 °C | 16.9 °C |
| Mean daily maximum | 22.6 °C | 22.5 °C |
| Mean daily minimum | 11.6 °C | 12.2 °C |
| Precipitation | 67 mm | 52 mm |
| Global radiation | 623.1 MJ/m² | 405.7 MJ/m² |
Identical mean temperatures and a 0.1 °C gap in the afternoon. September wins the nights by 0.6 °C and is 15 mm drier. May wins on light by a wide margin, 54 percent more global radiation, and on daylight: September loses an hour of evening across the month, May gains 36 minutes of it. Our September guide makes the case for the other twin.
Fifteen and a Half Hours of Light
| Date | Civil dawn | Sunrise | Sunset | Civil twilight ends | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sat 1 May | 04:53 | 05:27 | 19:55 | 20:29 | 14 h 28 m |
| Sat 8 May | 04:41 | 05:16 | 20:04 | 20:40 | 14 h 48 m |
| Sun 16 May | 04:29 | 05:06 | 20:15 | 20:51 | 15 h 09 m |
| Mon 17 May | 04:28 | 05:04 | 20:16 | 20:53 | 15 h 12 m |
| Mon 24 May | 04:19 | 04:57 | 20:24 | 21:02 | 15 h 27 m |
| Mon 31 May | 04:12 | 04:51 | 20:31 | 21:11 | 15 h 40 m |
The month adds 1 hour 12 minutes of daylight, and it splits it down the middle: sunrise moves 36 minutes earlier and sunset 36 minutes later. The second number is the one you feel. On 1 May you can walk the Danube embankment in daylight until about eight; by the end of the month civil twilight, the stretch after sunset when the sky is still bright enough to see without street lights, lasts until 21:11.
In practice that turns dinner into an outdoor plan. A rooftop drink at sunset in the last week of May is a half past eight booking, not a seven o’clock one, and our rooftop bar guide has the terraces that face the right way. A Danube cruise at nine in the evening still catches the last of the light at the end of the month.
The early end matters too. Civil dawn is at 04:53 on 1 May and 04:12 on the 31st, so it is light before five from the start of the month. If you want Fisherman’s Bastion or the Chain Bridge without people in the frame, May is the month when getting up for it costs the least darkness.
Times computed with the NOAA solar algorithm for central Budapest, 47.4979 N 19.0402 E, on CEST. Hungary’s clocks go forward on 28 March 2027, so the whole of May runs on summer time.
Two Public Holidays, and Only One of Them Moves Anything
The Hungarian labour code lists the public holidays by date. Two of them fall in May, and in 2027 they behave very differently.
Labour Day, Saturday 1 May. A Saturday holiday takes no working day off anyone, so it creates no long weekend. Shops follow the public holiday rule rather than their normal Saturday hours. The general pattern on a Hungarian public holiday is that shops close, supermarket chains included, while restaurants, cafés and petrol-station shops may open. If you are self-catering, shop on Friday. Széchenyi runs its weekend hours, which on a Saturday are its normal hours anyway.
Pentecost weekend, Saturday 15 to Monday 17 May. Whit Monday is the holiday, and with the weekend in front of it Hungarians get three days off in a row. That is the weekend to expect more domestic visitors in the city and on the roads out of it, and the one to book first if you are coming then.
What changes on Whit Monday itself:
- Shops close under the public holiday rule. Restaurants and cafés are allowed to open.
- Széchenyi opens at 08:00 rather than 07:00, because every public holiday runs on its weekend schedule, and closes at 20:00.
- Rudas also switches to its weekend schedule. On an ordinary Monday the wellness area stays open until 22:00; on the holiday it closes at 20:00, with the Turkish bath mixed.
- Lukács opens its sauna world for its full hours, as it does at weekends and on holidays, instead of only from 14:00.
- Museums are the part to check in advance. The Hungarian National Museum is closed every Monday as standing policy and was closed on Whit Monday in 2026 too; its 2027 holiday list currently stops at 1 January.
Pentecost Sunday, 16 May, is an ordinary Sunday for opening hours. Our public holidays guide has the full pattern for the rest of the year.
The Baths in May
May is a good month for a bath visit. The air is warm enough that walking between outdoor pools is pleasant rather than brave, and the mornings are still cool enough that a 36 to 38 °C pool feels like the reason you came.
| Bath | May, standing weekly rule |
|---|---|
| Széchenyi | Monday to Thursday 07:00 to 20:00, Friday to 22:00, weekends and public holidays 08:00 to 20:00. Outdoor thermal pool 36 to 38 °C, leisure pool 32 to 34 °C, swimming pool 26 to 28 °C |
| Rudas | Wellness 06:00 to 20:00, Monday to 22:00. Night bathing Friday and Saturday 22:00 to 03:00, online tickets only. Turkish bath women only on Tuesday, men only on Wednesday and on Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings until 10:45. No entry under 14 |
| Lukács | 07:00 to 19:00, Tuesday to 22:00. Sauna world from 14:00 on weekdays, full hours at weekends and on holidays |
| Palatinus | Winter timetable at present, 09:00 to 16:00. The 2027 outdoor season date is not published |
| Gellért | Closed since 1 October 2025, the operator expects to reopen in 2028 |
| Király | Closed indefinitely |
That table is the standing rule, not a May 2027 publication. The operators publish exceptions one date at a time, and their current lists end around the turn of the year. A maintenance closure in May would be announced closer to the date, so check the bath’s own page the week before you go.
Two closing details: at Széchenyi and Rudas the cash desk closes an hour before the bath does, and the pools have to be cleared 20 minutes before closing time. A 20:00 close is a 19:40 swim and a 19:00 last ticket.
Timing beats everything else at Széchenyi. The queue is the variable, not the water. Early mornings and evenings tend to walk straight in, midday is when the wait builds, and on the Pentecost weekend that midday crowd is larger than usual. Our Széchenyi guide covers the layout, and the comparison of Széchenyi, Rudas and Lukács helps if one bath is all you have time for. A Friday or Saturday in May is also a good night for the Rudas night session, with the rooftop pool and a sky that has only just gone dark.
Lido season: not announced yet
Palatinus, the big lido on Margaret Island, is on its winter timetable and its site carries no 2027 season date. Budapest Spas, which runs Palatinus and the city’s other public lidos, has published no 2027 opening date for any of them.
So plan around what is certain. Széchenyi’s outdoor pools are open in May whatever the lido date, and at 32 to 34 °C the leisure pool is the closest thing to a warm-weather swim that does not depend on an announcement. If the lidos open during your trip, Palatinus is the one to pick, and Margaret Island around it is worth an afternoon either way: the Japanese Garden in the photo above is free and at its greenest in May.
Three Dated Fixtures, and Two of Them Are Out of Town
Tour de Hongrie, 12 to 16 May. Hungary’s national stage race reaches its 48th edition in 2027, with five days of racing. It is a UCI ProSeries event, the level just below the WorldTour. The dates are out, but the route and the teams are not yet published on tdh.hu, so whether a stage starts or finishes anywhere near Budapest is not known yet. If you ride yourself, our cycling guide has the routes that are open every day of the year.
Szeged Wine Festival, 20 to 30 May. The 31st edition runs for eleven days in Szeged, the southern city on the Tisza. It is the one fixture this month long enough to plan a trip around rather than squeeze in, and our Szeged day trip guide has the train from Budapest and what to do in the city when you are not holding a glass. Three Dóm tér performers are already announced, but the full 2027 program is not out yet.
Gourmet Festival, 27 to 30 May. The food festival returns to Millenáris, the park next to Széll Kálmán tér in Buda. The organizer has fixed the dates; the 2027 exhibitors, hours and ticket prices come later. It overlaps the Szeged festival’s final weekend, so if both appeal, do Szeged on the 22nd or 23rd and keep Budapest for the last days of the month.
Tour de Hongrie dates, edition and category read at tdh.hu, Szeged Wine Festival dates and edition at szegediborfesztival.hu, and Gourmet Festival dates and venue at gourmetfesztival.hu, on 24 October 2026.
What to Pack
- Layers, not a coat. 22.6 °C afternoons and 11.6 °C mornings on the long-term averages. A T-shirt, something with sleeves and a light jacket cover the spread.
- Something for rain. 67 mm is the second-wettest month of the year. A compact umbrella or a packable waterproof, and shoes that do not mind a wet cobble.
- Sun cream and sunglasses. May’s global radiation is 91 percent of July’s. A long afternoon on Margaret Island or a Danube terrace will show it.
- Bath kit. Swimsuit, flip-flops and a towel or a rented one, plus something warm to throw on between outdoor pools before nine in the morning or after sunset.
- A going-out layer. Evenings stretch to after nine and the temperature drops with the light, so the jacket goes with you to dinner.
Should You Come in May?
For most people, yes. It is warm but well short of the July and August heat, the days are long and the parks are at their greenest. The rain is real, so plan an indoor afternoon or two.
When another month suits you better:
- If dry weather is the priority. September has the same temperatures with 15 mm less rain, and April is drier still at 36 mm, though 4.7 °C cooler in the afternoon.
- If you want a guaranteed outdoor swim. The lido season dates are not out, so a lido-first trip fits June or the high summer better.
- If one performance is the reason for the trip. Opera and concert dates for May 2027 are not on this calendar yet, so wait for the program before booking flights.
- If you would arrive on the Pentecost weekend without a booking. 15 to 17 May is a three-day weekend for Hungarians. Book ahead or pick another weekend.
The Month Either Side
Behind you: April is the cooler, drier month, with 17.9 °C afternoons and 36 mm of rain, and Easter falls on 28 March in 2027, so the Easter weekend has passed before April begins. Our April guide has that month in full.
Ahead of you: June adds another 3.6 °C to the afternoon and holds the rain at 66 mm. Our June guide has that month in full, and the month by month guide sets May against the rest of the year.
The Verdict
May is the month to come for long light evenings, green parks and baths that are comfortable at every hour of the day. Pack for rain and you lose very little.
Two decisions matter. Choose which end of the month you want, because the first days are close to late April and the last ones lean towards June, with half an hour more evening. And book the Pentecost weekend early or avoid it, because 15 to 17 May is a long weekend for the whole country.
If it is a first visit, our three-day itinerary is the frame to hang the month on, and the metro and tram guide gets you between all of it.

Good to know
What is the weather like in Budapest in May?
Warm afternoons, cool mornings and a fair amount of rain. Averaged over 1991 to 2020 at the Hungarian weather service's Budapest Pestszentlőrinc station, May's mean temperature is 16.9 °C, its mean daily maximum 22.6 °C, its mean daily minimum 11.6 °C and its precipitation 67 mm. That is 4.7 °C warmer than April in the afternoon and 31 mm wetter across the month, and only July, at 75 mm, has more rain. Global radiation, measured over 2001 to 2020, reaches 623.1 MJ/m², which is 91 percent of the July figure. These are long-term averages, not a forecast for your week.
What should you pack for Budapest in May?
Summer clothes for the afternoon, a real layer for the morning and evening, and something for rain. The long-term mean daily maximum is 22.6 °C and the mean daily minimum is 11.6 °C, so an 11 °C gap separates breakfast from lunch on an average day. May averages 67 mm of rain, the second-highest monthly total of the year, so a compact umbrella or a light waterproof is worth the space. Comfortable shoes that cope with a wet pavement matter more than a heavy coat. For the baths, bring flip-flops and something warm to put on between pools in the morning or after sunset.
Is May a good time to visit Budapest?
Yes, and it is one of the two strongest months of the year, alongside September. The temperatures are almost identical: a mean of 16.9 °C in both, a daily maximum of 22.6 °C in May against 22.5 °C in September. May has far more light, with sunset moving from 19:55 to 20:31 across the month and 15 h 40 m of daylight on the 31st. September has the milder nights, 12.2 °C against 11.6 °C, and less rain, 52 mm against 67 mm. If long evenings outdoors are the point, come in May. If you want the drier month, come in September.
What is on in Budapest in May 2027?
The organizers who have published 2027 dates so far: the Tour de Hongrie cycling race from 12 to 16 May, with the route still to be announced; the 31st Szeged Wine Festival in southern Hungary from 20 to 30 May; and the Gourmet Festival at Millenáris in Budapest from 27 to 30 May. Labour Day is Saturday 1 May, Pentecost is Sunday 16 May and Whit Monday is a public holiday on 17 May. For opera and concert dates, check the Opera and Müpa programs closer to the date.
Are the outdoor pools and lidos open in Budapest in May?
The thermal baths are, the lidos depend on a date nobody has published yet. Széchenyi is open every day of the year and its three outdoor pools are open in May: the thermal pool at 36 to 38 °C, the leisure pool at 32 to 34 °C and the swimming pool at 26 to 28 °C. The big summer lidos are different. Palatinus on Margaret Island is on its winter timetable, 09:00 to 16:00, and neither it nor Budapest Spas has published an opening date for the 2027 outdoor season. Until they do, plan May around the thermal baths and treat a full lido day as a bonus. Gellért has been closed since 1 October 2025, with the operator pointing at 2028, and Király is closed indefinitely.
What is open on Whit Monday in Budapest?
The baths, the restaurants and most of what a visitor needs, though shops close as on any public holiday. Whit Monday, 17 May 2027, is a statutory public holiday in Hungary. Széchenyi runs its weekend hours on every public holiday, 08:00 to 20:00. Rudas also switches to its weekend schedule, so the 22:00 close it keeps on an ordinary Monday does not apply and the bath closes at 20:00. Lukács opens its sauna world for its full hours on holidays rather than from 14:00. Museums are the thing to check: the Hungarian National Museum closed on Whit Monday in 2026, and its 2027 holiday list currently stops at 1 January.
