A Hilltop Abbey and a Baroque River Town

On a wooded hill at Pannonhalma, about two hours from Budapest, Benedictine monks still live and work in an abbey whose basilica was consecrated in 1224 and whose library holds close to 400,000 volumes. Its great hall reopened in January 2026, and it is the room you will remember from this trip.

The archabbey is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of the day. Half an hour away by bus, Győr sits where the Rába meets the Mosoni-Duna, the Danube’s quieter arm: a cathedral full of Maulbertsch frescoes, baroque squares with closed corner oriel windows, a bishop’s tower to climb and riverbanks made for an evening walk. Neither place is crowded off-season, and together they fill one full, unhurried day. Come Tuesday to Saturday: in autumn and winter the abbey is shut on Mondays.

Pannonhalma Archabbey

About 400 people live and work in the abbey, and that shapes the visit: only part of the monastery is open, and you follow a marked route. A single ticket gives you one entry to four places.

  • The basilica. An early Gothic, three-aisled church consecrated in 1224, its interior last renovated in 2012. The midday prayer at 13:00 is open to visitors, and it is worth timing your arrival for it.
  • The crypt. The oldest intact part of the abbey, from the early 13th century. After 2011 the urn holding the heart of Otto von Habsburg was placed here.
  • The cloister. Completed in its late Gothic form in 1486, entered through the carved Porta Speciosa.
  • The library. The reason most people come, and it is open again: it reopened on 20 January 2026 after an eight-month closure to rid it of a bread-beetle infestation. The main hall, with its interior by Joseph Klieber, belongs to a collection of close to 400,000 volumes. Build the visit around it.

A ticket is 3,200 Ft (about $10), 2,300 Ft for students and pensioners, and 6,900 Ft for a family of two adults and their children under 18; children under school age go free. On days when a liturgical event changes the route, tickets are half price. Online tickets are valid for three months, but they do not skip any queue; you show them at the visitors’ entrance.

Take the audioguide. The scheduled guided tours, Tuesday to Sunday at 11:00 and 14:00 until 31 October (4,300 Ft, about $13.50, with entry), are in Hungarian. The audioguide costs 900 Ft (about $3) and speaks English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Slovak, Polish, Japanese, Dutch, Chinese and Spanish. A guide or an audioguide turns the rooms from handsome to meaningful. The interiors themselves take about an hour; the rest of the hill fills the afternoon.

The view is half the reward, so if you can pick your day, pick a clear one. Off-season the abbey is quiet and rarely crowded. The contemporary exhibition Iskola a láthatáron runs in the main monastery exhibition space until 11 November 2026.

The arboretum and the hill

The 22-hectare arboretum below the abbey is free all year, no ticket needed, with several hundred species of trees and shrubs, and dogs on a lead are welcome. A footpath leads from the abbey to the Boldog Mór lookout tower and a fish-shaped canopy walkway in the treetops. The Millennium Monument of 1896 is seen from outside only.

The famous lavender garden and the scent museum are another matter: from October to May they take only pre-booked groups of at least ten, so as an individual visitor, save them for a summer trip.

Wine at the abbey

The Pannonhalma Abbey Winery, Winery of the Year in Hungary in 2023, runs guided cellar visits all year, starting from the monastery’s main entrance, each with home-made pogácsa:

  • 3 wines: 5,000 Ft (about $15.50)
  • 5 wines: 6,000 Ft (about $18.50)
  • 7 wines: 7,500 Ft (about $23)
  • Driver’s visit without tasting: 2,300 Ft

Start times are not posted, so book ahead on +36 96 570 225 or at winetasting@osb.hu, and fit the bus around the slot you get. The wine shop is open every day, Monday to Friday 8:00 to 16:30 and weekends 10:00 to 16:30, if you would rather take a bottle home.

Food on the hill

Out of season, food on the hill is thin. The Tricollis café is closed from 1 October to 30 April, and the PAUSA pastry shop is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, with liqueur tastings. On a Tuesday, eat in Győr before the bus.

Győr: Káptalandomb

Káptalandomb, Chapter Hill, is the old core of Győr above the rivers, with the cathedral, the Bishop’s Castle and the chapter houses grouped together. The Szent László visitor center runs all of it, and tickets are sold at the reception under the tower, Káptalandomb 1.

The cathedral. The Basilica of the Assumption goes back to the diocese St Stephen founded, probably in 1001. Inside it is baroque, with frescoes and altarpieces by Franz Anton Maulbertsch and his workshop from 1772 to 1774 and 1781, and a fully restored interior since works began in 2017, with a new organ and six new bells added in 2022. Look for the Gothic Héderváry Chapel, built under Bishop János Héderváry (1386 to 1415), where the sarcophagus of Blessed Vilmos Apor lies. Entry is free; it is open Monday to Saturday, 8:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, and Sunday 15:00 to 17:00. The Jaurinum treasury inside the basilica is 1,500 Ft (about $4.50).

The Bishop’s Castle tower. The castle is the only bishop’s residence of medieval origin in Hungary, and it is still the seat of the Bishop of Győr. Its tower is close to 40 meters high, open every day from 10:00 to 18:00 (last tickets half an hour before), and costs 2,000 Ft (about $6), 1,500 Ft for students and pensioners. Exhibitions on the landings break up the climb: the building history of the castle, portraits and coats of arms of the bishops, and bronze models of the old fortress. It is a lot of stairs, so skip it with limited mobility, but the 360° view at the top takes in the whole town and the rivers.

Legenda Aurea. In the Chapter House at Káptalandomb 11, this relics exhibition tells the story of the herm of St Ladislaus, a reliquary more than 600 years old that holds a fragment of the king’s skull and ranks as Hungary’s third great national treasure after the Holy Crown and the Holy Right, along with the icon of the Weeping Madonna. It is open every day, 10:00 to 18:00, and ends with a film.

Combined tickets make sense if you want more than one: two sites 3,000 Ft, three sites 4,000 Ft (about $12.50), five sites 5,500 Ft. Payment is in forints only.

Győr: The Old Town and the Rivers

From Káptalandomb the old town is a short walk, and it is compact: an hour or two on foot covers the main squares, more with a museum. It is clean, easy and rarely crowded, and easy to underestimate, so give it more time than you think.

Széchenyi tér is the main square, lined with cafés and restaurants, and the place for lunch outside when the weather allows. On it stands the Jesuit-built St Ignatius Church, the earliest baroque church in today’s Hungary, Benedictine since the early 19th century.

The Esterházy Palace, on the corner of Széchenyi tér and Király utca at Király utca 17, is the main site of the Rómer Flóris museum, with Győr’s typical closed corner oriel window. Until 8 November 2026 it shows Halhatatlan harcosok, more than 40 terracotta warriors of the first Chinese emperor, and until 20 December 2026 a show of Picasso prints from the Emmerling collection. A ticket is 5,000 Ft (about $15.50); a combined ticket for the palace and three more museum sites is 9,000 Ft (about $28) and is valid for three days. Phone photos without flash are free. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00.

Bécsi kapu tér has the oval Carmelite church from the early 18th century and, next to it, the Loreto chapel with its Black Madonna. The Roman stone collection in the castle casemates below the square closes for the winter from 19 October.

Then go down to the water. A good loop starts at Dunakapu tér, home of the Vaskakas, the iron rooster of the town’s legend, follows the castle wall around Káptalandomb to Bécsi kapu tér, and crosses the bridge to Radó-sziget, the island between two arms of the Rába. In front of the Kreszta House, look for the Jedlik fountain, a 365 kg turquoise glass soda siphon honoring Ányos Jedlik, the inventor of soda water.

On 23 October Győr marks the national holiday with a long-weekend program from 10:00, and Advent in Győr begins on 27 November 2026 at 16:00.

A water park for the family

The RQ water park and thermal bath is a family outing first, built around slides and fun pools, and its thermal pools are for ages 14 and over. From Monday to Thursday it opens only at 14:00 (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday until 19:00, Wednesday until 21:00), on Fridays 10:00 to 21:00 and on weekends 10:00 to 19:00. An adult ticket is 4,900 Ft (about $15) Monday to Thursday and 6,900 Ft (about $21.50) Friday to Sunday. Inside, you pay only by card or with the pre-loaded wristband, so top it up for food at the start. During the autumn school break, 23 October to 1 November, it opens daily from 10:00. If you would rather soak than slide, our Lipót thermal bath guide is the better read.

Getting There

The train to Győr

Board the InterCity at Budapest-Kelenföld. Until 12 December 2026 the development of the Southern Circular Railway is reshaping the timetable between Kelenföld and Keleti, so the Győr InterCity trains (SAVARIA, SCARBANTIA, MURA and DRÁVA) start at Kelenföld, on the M4 metro, every hour at 25 past, from 6:25 to 20:25. They take 1 hour 12 minutes for the 127 km.

You have two other ways in. The railjet xpress and EuroCity trains toward Vienna leave Budapest-Keleti at 30 past the hour and stop at Kelenföld about 25 minutes later, reaching Győr in 1 hour 30 from Keleti. The slow trains leave Budapest-Déli at 25 past and take 1 hour 54, via Tatabánya. The fastest train of the day is the EC 146 at 14:55 from Kelenföld, 1 hour 5.

A second-class ticket is 2,520 Ft (about $8) on every route. The InterCity, the railjet xpress and most EuroCity trains need a seat reservation, 650 Ft if you buy it by the day before or 990 Ft on the day, so the advance version comes to 3,170 Ft (about $10) and the on-the-day one to 3,510 Ft (about $11). The slow trains from Déli, the local trains from Kelenföld and the EC 346 DACIA at 6:54 from Kelenföld, which reaches Győr at 8:05, need none. MÁV also sells the whole trip to the abbey gate on one booking, train plus bus: 3,070 Ft (about $9.50) via the DACIA, or 3,720 Ft (about $11.50) on a train with a reservation. Our guide to traveling Hungary by train explains how reservations work.

Two dates to watch. Friday 23 October is a national holiday and the trains run to a Saturday timetable, with no extra afternoon locals and fewer early returns. From 27 to 29 October maintenance moves the InterCity departures from Kelenföld to 20 past, with a 1 hour 15 journey, and trains back arrive 5 to 14 minutes later than usual.

The way back

InterCity trains leave Győr for Kelenföld every hour at 21 past, the last at 20:21 (21:21 on Sundays), and later railjets run to Keleti until 22:56.

From Győr to the abbey

Take the bus, not the train. Volánbusz line 7030 leaves Győr bus station, about five minutes on foot from the railway station, and ends at the abbey’s main gate, the stop called Pannonhalma, vár főkapu. The ride takes 35 minutes and costs 550 Ft (about $1.50).

  • From Győr, every day: 8:10, 10:10, 12:10, 14:10, 16:10 and 18:10, plus 15:10 on weekdays.
  • Back from the abbey gate: 9:05, 11:05, 13:05, 15:05 and 17:05, the last one, plus 16:05 on weekdays. The trip back takes 40 minutes.

On 23 October the holiday timetable drops the weekday extras. If you miss the 17:05, walk down to the town center, about 15 minutes downhill, where more buses to Győr leave from the Pannonhalma, takarékszövetkezet stop; the last direct one goes at 21:46 on weekdays and 20:37 on Saturdays. On a Sunday, plan on the 17:05 from the abbey gate.

One thing the bus stop does not tell you: the main gate is the monks’ entrance. The visitors’ entrance, the “Turista bejárat”, is 300 meters away along the Várköri sétány, the promenade around the hill.

Pannonhalma also has a railway station, 24 minutes and 550 Ft from Győr, but it lies below the town, at least a 30 to 40 minutes’ walk from the abbey. Keen cyclists can ride instead: an 18.4 km cycle path runs from Győr via Nyúl and Écs to the foot of the abbey hill.

The Calendar Problem

  • Pannonhalma Archabbey: until 31 October, Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 16:00. From 1 November to 30 December, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 15:30. Closed on Mondays in autumn and winter, and on 24, 25, 26 and 31 December and 1 January. Buy your ticket at least an hour before closing, because the desk shuts then: by 15:00 in October, by 14:30 from November.
  • The late-October weekends are cut short. On Saturday 24 and Saturday 31 October the basilica, crypt and cloister close from 11:40 to 13:20 for the liturgy, and on Sunday 25 October they open only from 13:20. The library building stays open.
  • Győr cathedral: Monday to Saturday, 8:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00; Sunday 15:00 to 17:00. No tourist visits during services.
  • Bishop’s Castle tower: every day, 10:00 to 18:00.
  • Rómer museum sites, including the Esterházy Palace: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00. Closed on Mondays.

So the clean version is Tuesday to Saturday, and Tuesday to Friday is best of all: on the late-October Saturdays the abbey’s church areas close over the middle of the day.

A Day in Győr and Pannonhalma, Hour by Hour

A Tuesday to Friday plan, built on the 7:25 InterCity from Kelenföld:

TimeWhatWhy then
8:37Arrive in Győr, walk up to KáptalandombThe cathedral opens at 8:00 on weekdays and Saturdays
8:50The cathedral and the Héderváry ChapelFree, and it closes from 12:00 to 14:00
10:00Bishop's Castle towerOpens at 10:00; the view explains the town
10:45Széchenyi tér, early lunchThe abbey hill has little food off-season
12:10Bus 7030 from Győr bus stationReaches the abbey gate at 12:45
13:00Midday prayer in the basilica, then the abbey with the audioguideThe ticket desk closes at 15:00 (14:30 from November)
14:15Wine tasting, booked ahead, or the arboretumThe arboretum is free and open all year
15:05Bus back to GyőrArrives 15:45; the last bus from the gate is 17:05
16:00Esterházy Palace and the terracotta warriorsOpen until 18:00; the show runs until 8 November
18:00Dinner, then the riverside to Radó-szigetThe old town is small enough for one last loop
20:21InterCity back to KelenföldThe last InterCity, arriving 21:32 (on Sundays, one more at 21:21)

If the abbey is the priority, flip the day: the 8:25 InterCity reaches Győr at 9:37, the 10:10 bus has you at the gate at 10:45, the 13:05 brings you back for an afternoon on Káptalandomb, when the cathedral and the treasury reopen at 14:00.

On a Saturday the plan works too, with one change on 24 and 31 October: the basilica, crypt and cloister close from 11:40 to 13:20, so see the library and the exhibitions first and the church after 13:20.

Staying the Night

Győr is easy as a day trip, and it repays a night. With an evening in town you can see the abbey without watching the bus clock, walk the rivers after dark, and keep the next morning for a museum or the train on to Sopron.

Staying over? Compare hotels in Győr on Booking.com.

The Verdict

Győr and Pannonhalma make one of the best-paired days out of Budapest: a baroque river town with a free cathedral and a bishop’s tower, and a hilltop abbey with a library of close to 400,000 volumes, 35 minutes apart by bus. Take the InterCity from Kelenföld on any day from Tuesday to Saturday, ride bus 7030 to the gate rather than the train to the station below, take the audioguide, book the tasting, and keep an eye on the 17:05, the last bus down.

If you want more of western Hungary, Sopron is the next stop down the same line. For a big city in the south or east, Pécs and Debrecen are both direct-train trips.
