Halloween reached Budapest late and settled into the places that sell tickets. The zoo stays open after dark, a symphony orchestra plays a concert of monsters, and the alternative bands dress up. Then, the next day, the whole country goes to the cemetery.

That second part is the one visitors miss. Hungary already had a night when the dead come home, and it is the night after Halloween.

With Kids: the Zoo After Dark

Budapest Zoo reopens its gates at 18:00 on Friday 30 October for an evening that runs until 23:00. During the day the zoo works as normal; the Halloween event is separate, and day tickets and season passes do not get you in.

Ticket Price
Adult 5,900 Ft (about $18)
Child, student, senior 4,200 Ft (about $13)
Baby 400 Ft (about $1)

Tickets are sold online at tickets.zoobudapest.com and at the zoo’s own ticket offices and machines. The ticket offices and the entry gates close at 21:00, so a family that turns up at nine thinking it has two hours left is right about the two hours and wrong about getting in. The zoo caps the crowd at 7,000 people at a time.

What you get is a zoo showing its darker side, which for a ten-year-old is the whole appeal. The talks run under the title Vérvonalak, bloodlines: why some animals drink blood, what makes a plant blood red, and what one drop of blood tells a vet. The evening animal shows put reptiles and dangerous predators close up, and there is a real snake to meet. Fire jugglers and LED performers work several spots around the grounds, there are magic games by the seal pool, and the witches in the Banyatanya hut will tell your fortune if you ask.

Two practical things the zoo spells out. Some areas are closed in the evening for safety and animal welfare reasons, and the grounds have no street lighting, only mood lights and guide lights along the visitor routes. Bring a torch for the smallest ones and expect sound and light effects. Our Budapest Zoo guide covers the layout and the daytime tickets, and the family guide has the rest of the city for kids.

Kiserdei Halloween, the Locals’ Haunted Walk

Out in Ferencváros, District IX, a patch of woodland called Kiserdő (the little wood) turns into a haunted trail on Saturday 31 October. Gates open at 17:00, and the walk lets people in by the hour in named groups: Ghost busters at 17:30, Thriller at 18:30, Zombie at 19:30, Highway To Hell at 20:30 and Paranoid at 21:30, with each slot open for an hour.

It runs on registration through kiserdeihalloween.hu, up to eight people per booking, and the wristbands have to be collected in person between 12 and 26 October, at FMK, Haller utca 27 (weekdays 14:00 to 21:00), or at the Dési Művelődési Ház, Toronyház utca 17/b (weekdays 10:00 to 19:00). The early slots fill first, so book on kiserdeihalloween.hu as soon as you know your dates.

That pickup window is why this one is built for people who live here. If you are in Budapest by mid-October anyway, it is the most neighbourhood Halloween in the city. The same night has a costume contest in three categories (amateur, cosplay and family), and on Friday 30 October a pumpkin carving contest runs from 15:00 to 17:00 at the Palentárium community garden, both with sign-up on the same site.

The Night Itself, for Grown-Ups

Müpa: Little Night of Horrors (Rémségek kicsiny éjszakája), Saturday 31 October, 21:00 to 22:30. The Budafok Dohnányi Orchestra under Gábor Hollerung has made this a Halloween fixture: monsters, witches, devils and vampires conjured up by the orchestra, the Budapest Academic Choral Society and the ARLtistic Dance Company, with choreography by Réka Lilla Albert. It plays in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall. Tickets run from 5,900 to 17,900 Ft (about $18 to $56). Parking in Müpa’s own garage is free with a ticket for that day.

Akvárium Klub: Hiperkarma Halloween, Saturday 31 October, doors 18:30, NagyHall. Hiperkarma, the alternative band led by Róbert Bérczesi for 26 years, plays its 18th Halloween costume concert, and the band comes in costume too. The lyrics are the whole point of Hiperkarma and they are in Hungarian, so this is a night to go with Hungarian friends rather than to discover the band cold. Akvárium sits under Erzsébet tér, right in the centre. The club can make the cloakroom mandatory under its house rules, at 600 Ft (about $2).

Akvárium Klub: Twilight the Vampire Party, Thursday 22 October, doors 23:30, KisHall. A week early, and built entirely around Twilight and The Vampire Diaries: hits from 2008 to 2010, soundtracks, Halloween R&B and pop. Dress code is vampire, werewolf, witch, or simply black and red.

MVM Dome: Boris Brejcha, Saturday 31 October. The masked king of what he calls high-tech minimal plays the arena at Üllői út 133 to 135, with support from his FCKNG SERIOUS label. The show starts at 18:00; door times are still to be announced.

For an ordinary Halloween night out, the ruin bars do not need an occasion; our ruin bar guide sorts the ones worth the queue.

Little Night of Horrors date, hall, performers and prices read at mupa.hu, Hiperkarma Halloween and Twilight party dates, doors, halls and cloakroom fee at akvariumklub.hu, and Boris Brejcha date, start time, venue and support at mvm-dome.hu, all on 3 October 2026. Pumpkins for a Good Cause on Heroes’ Square

Every October the Gyermekétkeztetési Alapítvány, a foundation that feeds children in need, fills Heroes’ Square with carved pumpkins at its Töklámpás Fesztivál, the pumpkin lantern festival. The deal is simple: you bring a lantern you carved yourself and some non-perishable food, and the foundation turns the food into parcels for families. Last year’s 17th edition collected 214 boxes, more than two tonnes of food, plus 270,520 Ft (about $845) in cash donations.

The foundation announces each year’s date on gyea.hu and on its Facebook page. If you are in town on the night, it costs nothing to join and leaves the city a little better than it found it.

Festival format and 2025 results read at gyea.hu on 3 October 2026. Converted at 1 USD = 320 HUF, the ECB rate on 25 September 2026.

What Hungary Does Instead: 1 and 2 November

All Saints’ Day, Mindenszentek, is the real holiday. The Hungarian Labour Code lists 1 November among the public holidays, and in 2026 it falls on a Sunday. All Souls’ Day on 2 November, halottak napja, the day of the dead, is not a public holiday at all, even though it is the day the name belongs to. In practice families go to the graves on the 1st, when everyone is off.

The tradition is a thousand years older than the pumpkins. The commemoration of all the dead the day after All Saints goes back to Abbot Odilo of Cluny, who started it in 998. Hungarian folk custom built a whole night around it: the evening of All Saints is called halottak estéje, the evening of the dead, and church bells across the country ring for an hour or two in memory of the departed. In parts of Göcsej in western Hungary, families used to set the table overnight for their dead, and in some Zala villages a plate of strudel went in the window for the souls coming home. Candles on the graves are the part that survived everywhere.

So the old Hungarian night of the dead is real. It just falls a day after Halloween, and it is quiet.

The place to see it in Budapest is the Fiumei Road National Graveyard, still called Kerepesi by most people, at Fiumei út 16 to 18. Entry is free. In November it is open every day from 07:30 to 17:00, and on 1 November the sun sets at 16:27, so the candles come into their own while the gates are still open. Tram 24 stops at the main gate. Kossuth, Deák and Batthyány lie here in their mausoleums, Ady, Arany and Jókai nearby, and on All Saints the whole 56 hectares glow.

Go as a guest at someone else’s remembrance. The graveyard rules ask visitors to avoid anything that disturbs other people’s mourning, loud talk and music included. Photos and filming need advance notice to the operator, children under 14 must be with an adult, and animals other than assistance dogs are not allowed. Leave the costume at the hotel.

Our November guide covers the rest of the holiday: what closes, what the baths do and how the trams run. The public holidays guide has the full year.

Public holiday list read on net.jogtar.hu in the Hungarian Labour Code (Act I of 2012, section 102), the history and folk customs of All Souls’ Day in the Magyar Katolikus Lexikon at lexikon.katolikus.hu, and the graveyard’s hours, free entry, size, graves, tram access and visitor rules at fiumeiutisirkert.nori.gov.hu, all on 3 October 2026. Sunset computed for Budapest, 47.4979 N 19.0402 E, CET.

The Verdict

With children, the zoo on Friday is the one to book now; it has its own ticket, a hard 21:00 entry cut-off and a crowd cap. Without them, Saturday is a choice between an orchestra, a Hungarian band in costume and an arena techno show, and all three are better than a generic pub crawl with plastic fangs.

Then do the thing most visitors never think to do. Go to Kerepesi in the late afternoon of 1 November, walk in quietly and watch a city remember its dead. It is the most Hungarian way to spend Halloween weekend, and it starts the day after.

Our October guide has the rest of the month, including the clock change that makes Halloween night dark by half past four.

Good to know

Is Halloween celebrated in Budapest?

Yes, but as an import with its own venues rather than a street custom. Budapest does Halloween at ticketed events: the zoo runs an evening programme, Müpa stages a Halloween concert, clubs put on costume nights, and there is a big neighbourhood haunted walk in Ferencváros. Doors do not open for trick-or-treaters the way they do in the US or the UK. The holiday that actually matters to Hungarians is the day after, 1 November, All Saints' Day, when families visit graves and light candles.

What can you do with kids for Halloween in Budapest in 2026?

The surest option is Budapest Zoo's Halloween evening on Friday 30 October, 18:00 to 23:00. It needs its own ticket, because day tickets and season passes are not valid for it: 5,900 Ft (about $18) for adults and 4,200 Ft (about $13) for children, students and seniors, 400 Ft (about $1) for babies. The programme has snakes and creepy crawlies up close, fire juggling and LED shows, a witches' hut and talks about why some animals drink blood. Ticket offices and entry close at 21:00, and no more than 7,000 people are let in at once.

Is 31 October a public holiday in Hungary?

No. The Hungarian Labour Code lists 1 November, All Saints' Day, as a public holiday, and 31 October is an ordinary day. In 2026 31 October is a Saturday and 1 November a Sunday, so the holiday adds no long weekend. 2 November, All Souls' Day, is a normal working day despite being the day Hungarians call the Day of the Dead.

Where are the Halloween parties in Budapest in 2026?

The biggest confirmed nights are on Saturday 31 October. Hiperkarma, one of the best known Hungarian alternative bands, plays its 18th Halloween costume concert at Akvárium Klub's NagyHall, doors 18:30. Boris Brejcha brings his masked high-tech minimal show to MVM Dome the same night. Akvárium also runs a Twilight-themed vampire party in its KisHall on Thursday 22 October, doors 23:30. For a seated alternative, Müpa's Little Night of Horrors concert starts at 21:00.

Can tourists visit Kerepesi Cemetery on All Saints' Day?

Yes. The Fiumei Road National Graveyard, which most people still call Kerepesi, is free to enter and open 07:30 to 17:00 every day in November. On 1 November it fills with families and candles, and sunset falls at 16:27, so dusk arrives while the gates are still open. Behave as you would at any funeral: keep quiet, keep music off, and note that the rules require advance notice before taking photos. Children under 14 must be with an adult. Tram 24 stops at the main gate on Fiumei út.
