A Castle at the Water’s Edge, and the Geese at Dawn

An hour from Budapest there is a lake town where a medieval castle stands right at the water’s edge, its bastion walls dropping straight into the Old Lake. Kings Sigismund and Matthias both kept a palace here. In late autumn something even better happens: tens of thousands of wild geese spend the night on the lake, and at first light they lift off together in long, noisy skeins over the rooftops.

Tata is easy to love on any day of the year. You can walk the 7 km loop around the lake, see the castle and the restored Esterházy palace, cross a boardwalk over warm springs and climb an old shot tower for the view, all in a day trip on a 41-minute train. This guide covers the sights, the geese and the Wild Goose Festival on 28 November 2026, where to eat and how to get there.

The Old Lake and the Castle

The Öreg-tó, the Old Lake, is the heart of Tata. It is one of Hungary’s oldest artificial lakes, dammed on the Által-ér stream, and its present shape was designed by the engineer Sámuel Mikoviny in 1747, when the lake was part of the Esterházy estate and turned water mills along its banks. Today it is a Ramsar wetland of international importance, and the festival organizers call it Europe’s only bird resting place almost fully surrounded by a town.

The lake loop. A promenade runs all the way around, about 7 km. The north and east sides are paved, and the south and west sides are gravel. The east shore is where the geese gather in winter. A shorter 3 km loop takes in the smaller Cseke-tó and the English Garden.

Tata Castle

Tata Castle (Tatai vár) stands on a rock at the lake’s edge. Palatine István Lackfi built the first palace here; King Sigismund acquired it in 1397 and built a royal palace that was in use by 1409. King Matthias took it back in 1472 and rebuilt it as a Renaissance palace, and his court historian Bonfini compared it to the water castles of Italy. In the Ottoman wars of the 16th century the castle got its bastions, among them the Rosenberg bastion with its lakeside wall and casemate, and the Kecske bastion of 1586 with underground casemates and a gun room. Tata Castle was also a filming location for the first season of Netflix’s The Witcher.

Today the castle houses the Kuny Domokos Museum. The permanent rooms cover the birth of the town, everyday life in the Middle Ages, medieval and Roman stone carvings, a Roman room and the Knights’ Hall, where a reconstructed green-glazed stove recalls the age of Matthias. Temporary shows include one on the ancient sea that once covered the Tata area.

The Esterházy Palace

The Esterházy-kastély on Hősök tere was fully restored between 2018 and 2020 and is open inside. On the main floor you walk through the state rooms: a neo-rococo dining room with the family’s ancestor gallery, a room on the Peace of Schönbrunn of 1809, signed here with Napoleon, the countess’s suite with two original historic bathrooms, children’s playrooms, the count’s suite with a 19th-century English billiard table, and a chapel with an altar more than 200 years old. The visit is self-guided, with a visual guide system.

The Fényes Boardwalk and the Springs

The Fényes Tanösvény is a boardwalk on piles over a marshy spring area. The karst springs here dried up by 1973 because of mining and came back in the 2000s. The water is slightly carbonated and 20 to 22 °C, so on a cold, still winter morning the springs steam. Along the way there is a raft crossing and a rope bridge, which kids love, and the operator names ferruginous ducks, egrets, gray and purple herons, otters, beavers and European pond turtles among the wildlife.

Fényes Tanösvény 2026
Opening hours Every day, all year, 9:00 to 17:00 (ticket office to 16:30)
Adult ticket 2,300 Ft (about $7.10)
Student or pensioner 1,800 Ft
Child (3 to 6) 750 Ft; under 3 free
Family (2 adults + 3 children) 5,900 Ft

Check the weather first. The boardwalk closes in extreme weather, and whenever the national weather service issues any level of wind warning. When wet, the boards are very slippery. Dogs are not allowed (assistance dogs only), strollers can go the whole way, and there are toilets on site. It is a nature reserve, so keep your voice down.

If you come in summer, the Fényes bath next door has spring-fed pools; see our Tata Fényes guide.

The Wild Geese

From late September the wild geese start arriving in the Tata area, first on other, mostly private lakes, and around 10 November, when the lake level is lowered and sandbars appear in the middle, the first big flocks move onto the Old Lake. Numbers climb steeply from there. The organizers counted 67,000 geese roosting at once in 2023. Most are greater white-fronted geese, followed by greylag geese, with rare red-breasted, lesser white-fronted and barnacle geese among them, and white-tailed eagles turn up too. The geese usually stay into February, though in hard winters they move on.

When to go. The festival organizers say to visit between 25 November and 24 December for lots of geese; the peak runs from late November to mid-December.

The dawn flight. The geese leave the lake around sunrise. Be on the shore by about 6:45 to 7:00; fog delays them, and the last birds can still be lifting off around 9:00. The evening return starts from about 15:30, and in December the main flock comes in around 16:15 to 16:45.

Where to stand. The east shore below the bird-watching tower is the best spot for both, with the morning sun on the departing birds and the sunset behind the arrivals. Watch from the promenade and do not walk out onto the lakebed; rangers patrol it. Hunting is banned on and around the lake, and the town bans New Year’s Eve fireworks for the geese.

Dress for standing still at dawn. Warm, waterproof layers, a hot drink and binoculars make all the difference.

The Wild Goose Festival, 28 November 2026

The Tatai Vadlúd Sokadalom is held every year on the last Saturday of November, in 2026 on Saturday 28 November, on the east shore of the Old Lake near Építők parkja. It is run by the Duna-Ipoly National Park and the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME), and all of its main program is free. The 2025 edition included bird ringing, talks, children’s activities, a fair and a concert, and talks are held the evening before at the Malom & Kacsa event house.

  • Food and drink. A row of stalls sells sandwiches, roasts, lángos, kalács, coffee, tea and mulled wine. Bring your own cup.
  • Rules. No drones all day, and stay off the lakebed, the water and the ice.
  • Ticketed extras (limited places, booked through the national park’s ticket office at dunaipoly.jegy.hu): guided goose-watching on the shore with spotting scopes on weekends from 21 November, at 6:15 on Saturdays and 15:00 on both days (meeting at the lakeside bird-watching tower, except at 15:00 on 21 and 22 November, when it is the Esterházy riding hall), and on festival day a 30-minute 3D dome film, Falcopolis, about a million red-footed falcons in Africa.
  • Getting there for the dawn flight. On festival day the first stopping train leaves Budapest-Kelenföld at 5:32 and reaches Tóvároskert at 6:23. Tóvároskert halt is on the east side of town, about 20 minutes on foot from the bird tower, and the organizers recommend it for rail visitors. Trains back leave Tóvároskert at :30 past the hour.

Staying over. The small guesthouses on the east shore, on Tópart sétány, Boróka utca and Fáklya utca, are the closest beds to the goose-watching shore. Rooms near the lake go first on festival weekend, so book early.

Mills, Towers and the English Garden

The English Garden (Angolpark). Laid out from 1783 for the Esterházys by the estate engineer Ferenc Bőhm, this is Hungary’s first English-style landscape garden, and the first weeping willows in the country were planted here. Look for the romantic artificial ruins built by Charles Moreau in 1801 from real Romanesque fragments of the Vértesszentkereszt abbey and Roman gravestones. The park is free and open. Part of it has been the Olympic training camp since 1948.

Malomkert. Next to the English Garden, the Malomkert is a mill-history park with water play and models of grinding, saw, fulling and ship mills, plus the restored Jenő mill, about 300 years old, with an interactive exhibition. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, for 1,500 Ft (child 1,000 Ft, family 3,500 Ft).

The Fellner shot tower (Fellner Jakab kilátó). This 37 m tower was built in 1939 as a shot foundry: molten lead was dropped from the top into water to form lead shot. The operator calls it Hungary’s only surviving shot tower open to visitors. Climb its 175 steps for views over the town, the Old Lake and the Tata basin. You enter through the Kőfaragó ház visitor center, open Wednesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, for 1,500 Ft for the house and tower together. The operator’s tip: boardwalk in the morning, tower in the late-afternoon light.

Kálvária-domb. The bare limestone hill in the southwest of town carries a Calvary sculpture group by Antal Schweiger from about 1770, restored in 2020, and a 1755 chapel by Jakab Fellner built on the apse of a 14th-century Gothic church. At its foot, ELTE University’s Geological Garden shows Stone Age flint mining in an old quarry; visits are guided only.

Combined ticket “Könnyed felfedezés” 2026
Covers Fényes boardwalk, Malomkert, Kőfaragó ház and Fellner tower
Adult 4,500 Ft (about $13.90) instead of 5,300 Ft
Student or pensioner 3,500 Ft
Family (2 adults + 3 children) 11,000 Ft
Valid Six months from purchase

Because it lasts six months, you do not have to fit all four into one day: do two now and two on your next visit.

Getting There

From Budapest by train. Start from Budapest-Kelenföld: an IC leaves every hour at :25 and reaches Tata at :06, 41 minutes for 1,950 Ft (about $6) one way in second class, including a 650 Ft seat reservation, which is compulsory on the IC. The first is at 6:25. A stopping train leaves every hour at :32 and takes 53 minutes for 1,300 Ft (about $4), with no reservation. From Budapest-Déli a direct train leaves every hour at :25 and takes an hour, for 1,490 Ft. Keleti has no direct train, so head to Kelenföld or Déli.

Coming back. The IC leaves Tata at :50 and reaches Kelenföld at :32; the last IC is the 20:50. The stopping train leaves at :27 and reaches Kelenföld at :24; the last practical one is the 22:27, arriving at 23:24.

Train times and fares from the MÁV journey planner, checked 24 October 2026 for 7 and 10 November. These are autumn 2026 times; the timetable changes in mid-December, so check for your date.

From the station. Tata station is at the north end of town, not in the center. The castle is about half an hour on foot. Local buses 1 and 2 run from the station to the Autóbusz-állomás stop, about 10 minutes’ walk from the Esterházy Palace. For the geese, use Tóvároskert halt on the east side instead, where the stopping trains call.

By car. Tata is about 72 km from central Budapest, roughly 55 minutes on the M1 motorway. The palace has on-street parking next to it and a car park at Május 1. út 33, 10 minutes’ walk away. For the festival, the organizers point drivers to the free car park at Építők parkja, reached from main road 1 at the first traffic light coming from Tatabánya; spaces are limited, so come early. Our car rental guide covers hiring one in Budapest.

Combine It

Tata sits on the main line west, so it pairs well with the rest of northwestern Hungary.

  • Győr and Pannonhalma. Győr is 30 minutes on from Tata by IC (1,770 Ft including the reservation), or 53 minutes by stopping train (1,120 Ft), hourly. Pannonhalma Archabbey is a longer hop via Győr; check for engineering works on that line before you go.
  • More castles. Tata is one of the few Hungarian castles you can reach without a car. Our castles guide covers the rest.
  • Esztergom is about 47 km away, but there is no sensible rail link, so it pairs with Tata only by car.

Győr train times from the MÁV journey planner, checked 24 October 2026 for 7 November.

The Verdict

Tata is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Budapest. Take the IC from Kelenföld, see the castle by the lake in the morning, walk on to the Esterházy Palace for the state rooms and a slice of torta, and use the combined ticket for the Fényes boardwalk and the shot tower in the afternoon light. Go any day but Monday. And if you can, come between 25 November and 24 December, catch the early train, and stand on the east shore at dawn as the geese lift off the Old Lake. On 28 November 2026 the Wild Goose Festival makes a whole free day of it.
