Budapest in July: The Hottest Month Is Also the Wettest. Plan the Day Around Both.
On this page

July is Budapest’s hottest month and its wettest. Afternoons average 28.1 °C and the month brings 75 mm of rain, more than any other, mostly in short, heavy showers.
That combination tells you how to spend a July day here: outside early, under cover or in the water in the afternoon, and back out in the long, warm evening.

July and August are almost the same month for heat. The gap is 0.1 °C by day and 0.1 °C by night. If you are choosing between them, temperature is not the deciding factor. Rain, events and the school calendar are.
Summer is the wet season. May to August together bring 269 mm, almost half of the city’s 586 mm year, and July alone brings 75 mm. Most of it falls as afternoon showers rather than gray days, which is why the morning is the safe slot for anything outdoors.
How to Spend a July Day
The heat shapes the day more than the sightseeing list does.
- Before ten: walk. The Castle District, the Danube promenade and the bridges are cool, empty and in good light. This is when you climb Gellért Hill, not at two in the afternoon.
- Midday: go inside or into the water. A museum, a thermal bath or a lido. The museums worth your time are the obvious place to spend the hottest hours.
- After six: everything outside. Terraces, rooftops, a Danube cruise and the river banks fill up as the air cools.
During a heat wave the rules tighten. Our heat wave survival guide covers water, shade and which transport has air conditioning.
The Evenings Shorten, Slowly
July loses light, but you will barely notice until the last week.
| 1 July | 15 July | 31 July | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunrise | 04:50 | 05:01 | 05:20 |
| Sunset | 20:45 | 20:38 | 20:20 |
| Civil twilight ends | 21:25 | 21:17 | 20:56 |
| Daylight | 15 h 54 m | 15 h 37 m | 15 h 00 m |

Sunset is still after eight all month. For the classic view of the Parliament lighting up across the river, the sunset spots on the Buda side work from about half past eight in early July and about eight at the end of the month.
The Lidos Run at Full Capacity
July is lido month, and Budapest has some of the best city pools in Europe.
Palatinus on Margaret Island is the classic: wave pool, slides, lawns and shade. Dagály, in District XIII at the Pest end of Árpád Bridge, is the big one for lap swimming. If you have kids, our family baths guide has the age rules, slides and family tickets. For open water, the natural swimming lakes near Budapest are a short trip from the city.
Go in the morning or after five. On a hot weekend the busiest hours are noon to four, when every lawn is full. Pack flip-flops: the paving between pools gets hot enough to hurt.
Gellért is closed, with the operator expecting to reopen in 2028. Our guide to the baths covers the ones that are open.

What Is Already Confirmed for July 2027
Summer programs publish in spring, so this list is short for now. These are the dates the operators have put on sale.
| Date | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Wed 14 July | Slash featuring Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators | Budapest Park |
| Fri 30 July to Sun 1 August | Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix, race on Sunday | Hungaroring, Mogyoród |

The Grand Prix weekend is the one to book first. It is one of the busiest weekends of the Budapest summer. The Hungaroring is outside the city in Mogyoród, so the stay question is about the trip out each morning and back each evening as much as the room.
There is no public holiday in July 2027, so shops, offices and museums keep their normal hours all month.
Who Should Not Come in July
- Anyone who struggles in heat. 28.1 °C is the average, not the ceiling. In a heat wave the city gets much hotter.
- Anyone booking the Grand Prix weekend late. Rooms tighten and prices rise for 30 July to 1 August.
- Anyone who needs every afternoon dry. July gets more rain than any other month. It is usually brief, but it comes.
- Anyone after the cheapest trip. July is high season. Our cost guide has the numbers.
The Month Either Side
Behind you: June is 1.9 °C cooler in the afternoon, a little drier, and has the longest evenings of the year.
Ahead of you: August has the same heat and less rain, plus Sziget from 10 to 14 August and the 20 August national holiday, which falls on a Friday in 2027.
The Verdict
July works if you let the heat set the timetable. Walk early, swim or go inside in the afternoon, and spend the evenings outdoors, which is what everyone in the city does anyway. Book the Grand Prix weekend early if your dates touch 30 July to 1 August. And keep the afternoons loose: July rain is short, but it is the most rain the city gets all year.
For a first visit, our three-day itinerary is the frame, and the neighborhood guide is worth a read before you pick a room for a hot month.

Good to know
How hot is Budapest in July?
Warm to hot, and the hottest month on average. The long-term figures from the Hungarian national weather service, measured at Budapest Pestszentlőrinc over 1991 to 2020, are a mean of 22.5 °C, a mean daily maximum of 28.1 °C and a mean daily minimum of 16.7 °C. Those are averages, so individual days run well above them during a heat wave. The practical answer is that a July afternoon in the city is too hot for long walks in the sun, while mornings before ten and evenings after six are comfortable.
Does it rain a lot in Budapest in July?
More than in any other month, though it rarely rains all day. July averages 75 mm, the highest monthly total of the year, against 66 mm in June and 61 mm in August. Summer rain in Budapest mostly comes as short, heavy afternoon showers that clear within an hour or two. Keep the afternoon flexible and have an indoor option nearby, and the rain rarely costs you more than a coffee break.
Is July a good time to visit Budapest?
Yes, if you plan the day around the heat. July has long evenings, open-air concerts, the lidos at full capacity and the Grand Prix on its last weekend. The difficult part is the middle of the day, when the sun is strong and the stone city holds the heat. Do the sightseeing early, spend the afternoon in a pool, a museum or a shaded café, and come back out after six. If you cannot stand heat at all, May, June or September are kinder.
When is the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2027?
Race day is Sunday 1 August 2027, at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród, northeast of Budapest. The race weekend opens on Friday 30 July, so most of the event falls in July. Book a room for that weekend early, because the Grand Prix is one of the busiest weekends of the Budapest summer.
What should you pack for Budapest in July?
Light, breathable clothes, a hat, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and a light rain layer. Comfortable sandals or breathable shoes matter more than usual because you will walk on hot stone. Bring a swimsuit and flip-flops for the lidos and baths. A thin layer for the evening is enough: nights average 16.7 °C.
