Eating at Gundel in Budapest: Menu Prices, Dress Code and When to Go
On this page
Gundel, the restaurant that carried Hungarian cooking onto the world stage, sits in a 19th-century villa at Gundel Károly út 4, beside the Zoo on the edge of City Park, and opens every day from 11:30 to 22:00. For a first visit, come by day: the 11:30 to 18:00 menu serves the house classics without the dinner dress code, and a goulash soup with a somlói galuska comes to 7,000 HUF (about $21) before service.
The evening is for an occasion, with set menus from 15,700 HUF (about $48). Below: which half of the day suits you, what to order, what a meal costs once the service charge lands, and how to get there.

Lunch or dinner: which Gundel to book

The day menu, 11:30 to 18:00, is the Gundel most visitors should book. It carries the house classics at single-dish prices, and before 18:00 street clothes are fine. It suits a long lunch after the Zoo or Heroes’ Square, and it lets you build a meal from exactly the two dishes you came for.
Dinner, 18:00 to 22:00, is a different evening. The card is built around set menus that open with a welcome drink, an amuse-bouche and sourdough bread with körözött, the paprika cheese spread, and close with a pre-dessert. Pick it for a birthday, an anniversary or the last night of a trip, when the occasion is the point.
Give this meal some breathing room in your itinerary. If you have a show or train to catch, tell the team when you book so they know your plans.
Live music is part of the appeal. If catching up over dinner matters more to you, ask about a table farther from the musicians when booking.

| Dinner set menu | Price | Wine pairing |
|---|---|---|
| 2 courses: a main plus a starter, soup or dessert | 15,700 HUF (about $48) | + 7,000 HUF (about $21) |
| 3 courses: starter or soup, main, dessert | 20,650 HUF (about $63) | + 10,500 HUF (about $32) |
| 4 courses: starter, soup, main, dessert | 24,500 HUF (about $75) | + 14,000 HUF (about $43) |
Some dishes carry a supplement inside the set menu: the Bakonyi beef tenderloin adds 4,900 HUF (about $15).
Sundays add a third option, a family lunch menu from 11:30 to 16:00, priced for the table at 31,500 HUF (about $97) for two and 59,500 HUF (about $183) for four.

What to order at Gundel
The best plates here are the ones this kitchen made famous, and the day menu prices them like any other dish.

- Goulash soup with csipetke, 3,675 HUF (about $11). Károly Gundel wrote the restaurant version of gulyás, built on a paprika pörkölt base, and the kitchen today makes it with beef cheek cooked for three hours.
- Chicken paprikash with nokedli and sour-cream cucumber salad, 6,650 HUF (about $20). The house traces the sauce recipe to its own kitchen.
- Újházi chicken soup with house noodles, 3,675 HUF (about $11), the golden broth that tastes of Sunday lunch to most Hungarians.
- Mangalica Wiener schnitzel with parsley potatoes, 8,400 HUF (about $26), made from the native curly-coated pig.

The two desserts born in this house

Leave room. Somlói galuska, 3,325 HUF (about $10), was the idea of Gundel’s head waiter Károly Gollerits, worked out by pastry chef József Béla Szőcs in the late 1950s, and it won its fame at the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair: three sponges, vanilla cream, walnuts, rum-soaked raisins, chocolate sauce and whipped cream.
The Gundel pancake, also 3,325 HUF (about $10), is a thin pancake filled with walnuts toasted in syrup and orange zest, under a sauce of real chocolate. Ask for it flamed, for 1,400 HUF (about $4) more, if you want the theater with it.
Can’t choose? The dessert selection puts three of Dobos torte, Eszterházy, mini Rákóczi túrós, somlói and a mini chocolate cake on one plate for 3,500 HUF (about $11).
Save room for the pancake. With the two-course dinner, you can choose a main and dessert; the grand dining room doesn’t oblige you to order a starter.

Wine
The wine list leans Hungarian, region by region from Tokaj and Villány to the Balaton uplands and Somló, and the sommelier helps with pairings. The house sparkling, Gundel Garamvári Prestige Brut, is 2,975 HUF (about $9) a glass or 14,875 HUF (about $46) a bottle.

- Running late? The table is held for 15 minutes. If your plans change, tell the restaurant ahead by email or phone.
- Dress code: smart casual inside after 18:00. Before 18:00, and on the terrace in summer, street clothes are fine.
- Splitting the bill: say so when you book or when you arrive. A table of more than six can split the bill two ways only.
- Bring nothing: outside drinks and outside cakes are not served. For a birthday, order a Gundel cake when you book.
- Dogs are welcome in the garden in summer, not indoors.
- Parking: the restaurant has no car park of its own, so you park on the street. Staff will call a taxi when you leave.
Insider tip: the kitchen closes at 21:00, an hour before the doors. For a late dinner, order dessert with your main course rather than waiting.

Getting there: City Park and the Zoo
Gundel stands beside the Zoo, a short walk from Heroes’ Square, so it pairs naturally with a City Park day. Take the M1 yellow metro to Széchenyi fürdő, trolleybus 75 or 79 or buses 20E, 30, 30A or 105 to Hősök tere, or trolleybus 72 to Állatkert, the Zoo stop.
Build the day around it: the statues of Heroes’ Square, the Budapest Zoo next door, Vajdahunyad Castle across the park, and a soak at the Széchenyi Baths after lunch.

A short history of Gundel
A restaurant has stood on this spot beside the Zoo since 1866. The present building opened in 1894 as the Wampetics restaurant, designed by Ervin Bauer, and in 1910 Károly Gundel leased it from the city and renamed it after himself. He never cooked, by the house’s own telling, but he tasted everything, and he married Hungarian ingredients to French technique until the restaurant became the country’s culinary calling card. In 1939 Gundel ran the restaurant of the Hungarian pavilion at the New York World’s Fair.
The restaurant was nationalized in 1949. In 1991 the New York restaurateur George Lang, backed by Ronald Lauder, bought it and reopened it in 1992, and in 2014 Gundel’s culinary heritage entered the Hungarikum collection. Today the Eventrend Group runs it, and the kitchen still cooks from more than 140 original Gundel recipes.

Is Gundel worth it?
Yes, for one meal, if you pick the right one. Gundel is for travelers who want the Hungarian classics in the house where several of them were created, served with ceremony. The trade-off is the price: a somlói here costs a restaurant course rather than a pastry-shop slice, and 15% service lands on top. Book a day-menu lunch for goulash and dessert, or a dinner set menu for an occasion.
For more of the city’s cakes, the Hungarian desserts guide covers the pastry shops, and the goulash guide compares bowls across town. More places to eat are in the food and restaurants hub.
